Candide is the lovable play of this time of age,
I feel a shivering sense of tension to be able to perform.
The musical "C andide" which is originally produced by Leonard Bernstein, modified and directed by Amon
Miyamoto, will raise its curtains on the 26th of April. For Akinori Nakagawa, this will be his third leading part for
musical after "Mozart!" and "P URE LOVE".
Akinori is a 21 years old star with slender body and quiet voice, which is energetic enthusiastic inside. We asked
his enthusiasms and feelings towards this coming musical "C andide".

The musical "Candide" which is originally produced by Leonard Bernstein, modified and
directed by Amon Miyamoto, will raise its curtains on the 26th of April. For Akinori Nakagawa,
this will be his third leading part for musical after "Mozart!" and "PURE LOVE".
Akinori is a 21 years old star with slender body and quiet voice, which is energetic
enthusiastic inside. We asked his enthusiasms and feelings towards this coming musical
"Candide".

I was very much attracted to this entertainment
with both common and artistic touches.
"When I had this offer of performing in Candide, I listened
to Bernstein's CD and felt that this was going to be very
difficult. Every score of Bernstein had its turn and
conclusions. It has both common touches and artistic
touches. I was a little anxious of performing this difficult
play. But I felt that there is a lot to learn by pushing
myself to my capacity. I decided to spring forward this
anxious feeling and accepted this role. There for,
Candide is going to be a great challenge for me.
I am a musician as well as a stage actor. There for I have
two faces. Candide is a challenge to go ahead and become an independent entertainer. I
am looking forward to see various characters of the director Amon Miyamoto and other
talented people from classic fields, to combine and create one masterpiece.
As an entertainer, I wish to hunt for more presence on the stage.
"By performing the leading part in both "Mozart!" and "PURE LOVE", I realized that musicals
work out by an ensemble of both music and acting. The neither should outstand the other.
The harmony of both is the essence of a good performance and enjoyment. I had a struggle
before I was aware with that fact. It is difficult but that balance itself is the brilliance of
musical. By learning the joy of musical, I was able to find my next goal as an entertainer.
"Candide requires more entertainment and presence on the stage than my two previous
musicals. My main issue was to add my own essence in the story to make it even more
dramatic. A beloved son Candide loses his lover in sudden disappearance and gets involved
in various situations. He then realizes that love is something you gain with your strong will
through your life, and not something you just give. The bane, disappointment and suffer of
Candide has many in common with myself. By playing Candide, my fifth part has changed
toward a new possibility. By performing my part in satisfaction, I would like to give myself a
harder job and broaden my possibility.
The time of age 2004 should love this
play. I feel a shivering sense of tension
to be able to perform.
"My most favorite in this play is the song
"Make Our Garden Grow". When I first heard
this song, I couldn't sleep. It will be one of
the songs that will remain in my heart
forever since I believe it is the song that
expresses Bernstein's feeling the most.
The hidden theme inside entertainment of
common and artistic touch is very deep and
difficult. But to create and pass on the
message is a life-long calling for a creator. If
you neglect that, you can't go further. So I try to be strict to myself as possible. I feel a
shivering sense of tension and I also feel the passion of the staffs every time we practice.
We all the same goal, that is to make this play a success. I believe that Candide has
meaning to be played in this time age 2004, and is the lovable play of this time of age."
Akinori Nakagawa ● Born 5th November 1982 in Sendai. Shows great talent as a singer, lyricist,
composer, pianist, and orchestrator. In 2001 he made his debut as a singer with " I WILL GET
YOUR KISS". The song was used as the theme song in "MARIA" a TV drama of TBS, and sold
over 200000 copies. Akinori won rookie award in drama section of the National Arts Festival, best
male actor and Haruko Sugimura award in Yomiuri Drama Awards, by performing in the musical
"Mozart!" in 2002. He performed his second musical "P URE LOVE" in 2003, which also ended in
a great success. Released his 4th single "Matador" in January 2004. His second album "himself"
released on 17th March is also in the charts.

"Candide" is a musical work that Leonard Bernstein, one of the great composer of the 20th
century, known as the composer of "West Side Story" had dwelled on. This musical is based on
a novel of squib optimism by one of the best French philosopher of the 18th century Voltair,
and was remodeled as a high quality entertainment musical by Bernstein. It has been
performed many times.
For this time, there are some refurnishes of being even more musical and entertaining.
Directions are by Amon Miyamoto who is now active around the world, and music direction will
be by David Charles Abble. The leading part Candide will be by the most prospective musical
star Akinori Nakagawa.

Maria Pages will come back to Japan since 2 years with her dance troupe. Maria Pages is the
creator of the flamenco part in "Riverdance" and she has also performed in Broadway and in
Japan with over 15000000 audiences in total.
She has won numerous honorable prizes as a choreographer and a dancer with her flamenco
dance that has changed its definition.
This time will be her new dance called "Songs For a Before War" which was inspired by the
documentary film "Songs For After a War" made in under the censorship of Franco Government
era. This will be an experimental show for her coming spectacular which is expected to start in
this 2years. She has stopped her "Company" performance for this, even though it had made a
great success worldwide.
"Flamenco Republic" which received standing ovation and replay request in 2002 when she
came to Japan will be performed again. Please look forward for this gorgeous double feature

Ennio Morricone, the master of movie soundtracks who has worked on over 450 titles, will
make his first visit to Japan.
Ennio Morricone has made with Sergio Leone; the master of Macaroni Western, many
masterpieces like "Fistful of Dollars" "For a Few Dollars More" "Western" and "Once Upon a
Time in America". He then widened his appeal to suspense, comedy, and love songs and was
nominated by the Oscar with "Days of Heaven" "Mission" "Untouchable" and "Bugsy". Many
young movie fans were addicted to his aesthetic and lyrical melodies of "New Cinema Paradise"
"The Legend of 1900" and "Malena".
He has recently worked on "Musashi" a samurai drama by NHK, and still is keeping the heat on
composing even though he is 75.
This time he will be conducting in front of the orchestra, soloists, and choirs of over 200
people. You're sure to be moved by the melodies of which you have listen to somewhere.

The show shop exhibition by the theme "Taisho Roman" will be held with over 5000 items of
kimonos that are new imaged but have old familiar scents.
The traditional Japanese "Wa" style has been revalued recently in many fields. In the kimono
market today there are many retro designs from the Taisho era. People revalue the designs
of that era and characterize them with there own way of wearing them. The Taisho era is a
time when women were able to wear their clothes freely. Yamato which was founded in 1917,
will perform the Kimono fashion of the "Taisho Roman" with two categories "Taisho Roman"
and "Taisho Modern".

Diabetes is said to be the "folk disease of the 21st century" and its harm to health is well
recognized. The diabetes survey by the ministry of health, labor and welfare shows that there
are approx 7400000 that are "suspected to be diabetic", and 8800000 that "can't deny the
possibility of diabetes". That is 500000 and 2000000 increase in each compared to five years
ago.
The Annual Meeting of Japan Diabetes Society is an important opportunity to share the
evolution of diabetic researches where all members gather. The theme for this time is
"Opening the door of radical sure of Diabetes" There will be special lectures by Graeme Bell
from Chicago University, John Todd from Cambridge University and Makoto Asajima from
Department of Advanced Social and International Studies University of Tokyo. And also other
programs like panel discussions, symposiums, workshops and educational lectures. This
annual meeting is sure to be a big step for diabetes to become a disease that can be cured
and preventable. Civilians open lecture will also be held on the afternoon of the 15th(free of
charge).

The "IBM Software World 2003" which was held for the first time at the Tokyo International
Forum was an event that showed products and technologies for the realization of e-business

minutes" may determine the life of the patient. First Aid by people near by is needed to fill
that blank 6 minutes.
The Tokyo Emergency First Aid Association, which was established for prevalence of First Aid,
has entered its tenth year. There will be a lecture by Michiko Imai, a doctor and also an expert
climber, and a First Aid course. The three hours course includes cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation (mouth to mouth breathing and cardiac compression) and blood stanching by
expert instructors. You will receive an approval certificate after attending the course. In case
of an emergency, why not participate to be able to help your family or friends?

"JINTAI PLASTOMIC"

We have had more than 800000 visitors which is more than we
expected during the exhibition from Sat 6th September ‾Sun 1st
February. Even though we extended our opening hours and tried
as much as possible to let the visitor tour in a relaxing
environment, there was a 5hour lay over on the last day. But we were very happy that so
many came despite that fact.
60% of the visitors were women. Not only are they curios of human specimens, but also are
they more conscious about knowing their own body than men. There were many women
that visited the question and answer corner. There were also many aspirants to a career in
medicine like medical students with anatomy books and nurses.
The reason we were able to introduce this anatomy world, which was up to now considered
to be a specialized field, was because of the new process of specimen-creation that can be
stored semi permanently without any smell and touch proof. Also the wide spread informed
consent made people more conscious of the importance on knowing their own body.
To proof that this event was not just an idea and to let people know more about their
bodies, we were able to appeal and ensure this event as a meaningful one with
cooperation by the people of the Japan Red Cross, JMA and other institutes.
For our company, it was a great event to utilize our experiences and achievements of the
medical field through our events and publishing. As it was a challenging event considering
the privacy of body donations, the success of this event was really thankful.
The convenient access of the Tokyo International Forum was also one key to this success.
"JINTAI PLASTOMIC" will be held at Sapporo from Sat. 24th April and also at Hamamatsu from
this summer. In overseas this event has already been held in Hong Kong and we are
planning now to hold some where in Oceania. All details will be noticed on our website so
please come and check it out.

"Oedo Antique Fair"
People from different ages, genders, nationalities,,,,
The "Oedo Antique Fair" has become one of the events that
took root here with Japanese ceramics, western tableware,
Obi and Kimonos, jewelry, toys, old general tools and pieces
of machineries.
I decided to take the antique guide tour with the special
guide. "This is called the Tsuishu which is carved after many
layers of lacquer." "This is a brazier from the early Showa
era. People use it as a flower pot or a wine cooler." I was
able to receive hints and stories by the guide, which
explains about the life of old ages and how it is used today.
Erbe Dubois who is studying antique, has lived in Japan for
18 years and fluent in Japanese. "Hold this glasses for me"
a voice from a young man. An old man is hunting for a
handle for his cane.
" Its so great to be able to work in such a great place!" says
Erbe. "Unlike the antique fairs in France, anyone can enjoy
in this antique fair. It has a opened atmosphere and I have customers that teach me too"
Gardery Sayeed who is a Kurdish showed us a 255years old carpet
that costs 25000000 yen! It is something that could be in a Gallery.
There are many hidden items like these.
"I have this ready because there are so many diverse base. This is
the interesting part of this event. I really think it is a good idea"
For some people it might be junk. For others it might be treasure. It
is quite simply a wonderland. I bought myself a dead stock cup and
saucer made in the early Showa era.
By the brief lecture by the guide and being able to find my treasure, I
had a great time. Why don't you come and experience this yourself?

Mr. Erbe who was there when we visited, showed us his
recommend an oil paint painted by an English painter in 1880 that
costs 70000yen, and a C hinese incense burner made in the Edo
era. " I don't much care if it sells. That's the fun of antiques."

"Heaven Artist"
Lunch time at the plaza where people drift by. Did you know that
there are some performances held here? The artists are called
"Heaven Artists". They are selected by the metropolitan government
and have license to perform at the Tokyo International Forum and
other public places. This is by the notion of having art close to the
people. Hiro who plays South American folkrole music is one of them.
By playing with the Samponya, which is a South American recorder, charango, cajon and
quena he performs Japanese hit songs, cartoon songs and pop musics like "Itu Nandodemo"
"Haruyo koi" "Ookina furudokei" "Chijou no hoshi". The melodies combined by folkrole
touches your heart.

The Tokyo International Forum has aimed for a more friendly facility
since its privatization in last July, and made effort in changing the
signboards and arranging art works.
The information counter in the basement floor of the Glass hall has
provided information and guidance of the facility. But now, to show
even more courtesy, we have people making rounds around the
lobby. "Of cause people mainly ask about the facilities and events,
but also quite a few people ask the way to Ginza or the way to get to
other places. We hope to be able to answer all of these questions in our most appropriate
way." (Information counter staff)
The staffs do their best to gather information by buying the magazines that have Ginza
features, and collect booklets from stations and restaurants.

The art work that gather at the "Boat of multiplicity" part 2

I really am satisfied when I hear voices that there are people who wait and eat while they sit
on the circled stones placed in the plaza.
When we were setting these stones, Long came around with a pencil which had a string
attached on the end. He held the end of string that was the center of the circle and
another drew a circle with the pencil. He then placed the stones on that line.
It was the first time that an artwork was placed here permanently in the Tokyo International
Forum. The forum is divided in two wings, so there was an impression of two different
facilities. Longs circle connected these wings as a whole facility.
This artwork is the shortest. When you try to look at it your eyes go to the ground. There are
lines like grids. On the setting of the stones the stone dealer helped us out. We placed the
stones on the circle line by using ice. In this way the stone is easy to place, melts away and
doesn't carve up the ground.
You will notice if you try, but there is a great difference to be inside the circle from being
out. Longs artwork has the inspiration of the stone civilizations and stone circles of
Bretagne and England in its Pre-Christian time.
What was unexpected was that Longs circle had a very Japanese way of providing the
relaxation spot like "Kosansui" a Japanese scroll picture. Maybe it was the Japanese stone
that he selected. When we were setting the stones, I was back in my memories when I first
visited Longs house outside London. His house stood in a nice street in the countryside. He
wasn't there.
I visited him at lunchtime. He boiled some potatoes and cut them into halves. He explained
about his plan by placing the potatoes on a round plate. The stones in the Forum are
placed just like these potatoes.
He was an outdoor person by nature. He used to draw lines with his work shoes that
became representatives of land art.
I can't forget the shoes in Longs house. Those shoes walked through heaths, fields and
cities. Longs stone circle which is placed in the middle of the city, has the rest of the fields
and the dryness of the heaths.
