MAPLE LEAF SNOW SKIMMERS
NEWSLETTER 2014
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE FALL 2014
www.snowskimmers.com
The ”off season” weather conditions created substancial damage to our trail network. We have huge washouts from torrential downpours and overflowing of beaver dams continues to be a constant headache. The dedication of volunteers, spearheaded by Lionel Williams, Trail Coordinator and Herb Hammond Vice President has risen once again to the challenge.
Repairs are well underway, however the generation of the much needed revenue is a problem. As always the call goes out
to our membership to assist with these costs (and average of $10. per club member equates to $9,580)-sufficent to purchase
culverts, hire contractors etc. Our trails have the reputation of being well maintained with picturesque scenery-they are
second to none in the area. To maintain our image these donations, in the form of labour or $$, are necessary. If you can
help in any way please contact Lionel Williams @613-332-2352 or email [email protected].
As reported last season our maintenance and storage facility is a blessing for our volunteers to work on and repair our
equipment indoors out of the bitter wind and snow. We are busy with “ fund raising” events to help finish the interior–
insulation, wiring, heating, drywall etc. The kind donation of Jeff and Julie Jones and Tim Leveque were greatly appreciated by the club members.
Many of you are familiar with the “Framework for Change” (FFC) approved on the AGM floor in Markham –September
2013. While many of us were concerned about the approach to offer the sale of permits at a reduced rate ($180.00 available only on-line and purchased before November 1st) the results were overwhelming with sales reaching the 100,000
plateau (the highest in over 10 years). The real benefit for clubs was a large cheque received by mid November from these
“on-line” sales to get an early start in preparing trails for your safe riding enjoyment. Our membership grew to 958 last
season and we are hoping to reach the magic 1,000 this year. The on-line process is an easy way to purchase your permit
and your support of Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers– a club in District 6 is appreciated.
Generous Landowners continue to be a “crucial link” to all trails throughout the Province so please respect their property,
stay on the trails and say thanks when given the opportunity.
Recent surveys indicate the sport is alive and well with upward trends in growth for the enjoyment of all family members.
Going forward we will be posting our newsletter on our web site www.snowskimmers.com which not only saves mailing
costs but makes it more convenient for our membership to read at their leisure. Your e-mail address would be helpful in
keeping you informed of club activities– if you wish please provide our club Secretary, Diane [email protected] with your address.
Can we be blessed with another long winter? Sure hope so but in any event have fun and enjoy riding our trails again this
season.

TRAIL REPORT:LIONEL WILLIAMS
The snowmobiling season is coming very fast! There is a lot of trail work to be done! Trail E109 has a lot of water flooding the trail and
washouts that MUST be repaired before freeze up. Trail 178 from E109 to Mink Lake has pipes that have to be covered with soil. The
steady heavy rain this Spring and Summer washed all the soil off the pipes leaving large holes in the trail. This trail also has deep ruts
where the water has run down the trail. These ruts have to be repaired before freeze up. The beavers love all this water and are extremely
busy building their dams along our trails causing a lot of flooding and washouts. Beavers have become a major problem building dams as
fast as we can pull them.
The new building has been very advantageous for us. When equipment is apart tools can be left out until repairs are completed .All our
equipment has been serviced and is ready to go.
Every year we ask for new volunteers to work on the trails and or to train to be groomer operators. If you have any spare time and you
would like to get out and make some new friends, we would love to have you volunteer to work with us. Please call Lionel Williams
(613-332-2352) or Bram Vantol at (613-332-1079). WE NEED YOU
Just one of our trails that needs work this year
