Course descriptions... Thursday, February 10, 2011
“So You Want to be in EMS?” ~ Chris Goliver, MD, FACEP, FAAEM
This lecture is intended to give the participant an insight into the obstacles and rewards involved with providing emergency
medical care. The lecture will draw upon real life experiences that influence us at work, and how those experiences shape us into
the people that we are.
“Special Challenges in Patient Assessment” ~ Ken Majors, RN, EMT-P, EMS-I
This lecture will discuss the assessment findings and treatments for patients with “Unique” health care needs. We will also identify
and discuss the use of special medical devices, as they apply to the EMS provider.
“Pertussis: Resurgence of a Vaccine-preventable Disease” ~ Todd Wilson, NREMT-P
The goal of this presentation is to educate participants on the resurgence of pertussis in our area. Pertussis is a highly contagious
bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable, violent coughing, which can make it hard to breathe. A deep “whooping” sound
is often heard when the patient tries to take a breath. During this one hour lecture, we will look at the disease process, current
treatments and prevention of future outbreaks.
“Over the River & Through the Woods” ~ Dale Schulte, AS, NREMT-P
This lecture will identify the assessment needs of the geriatric population while showing the differences to that of the adult population.
“Airway Management” ~ Wes R. Cartwright, NREMT-P
This lecture will review and discuss basic airway anatomy. We will review basic and advanced techniques to maintain and improve
a patient’s airway status, plus take a look at the need for advanced airway procedures, versus basic airway procedures.
“Headaches, Nausea & Vomiting” ~ Brad Wimmer, NREMT-P, EMS-I
The goal of this presentation is to educate the pre-hospital provider on the different types of headaches their patient’s may present
with. We will also discuss treatment for nausea, vomiting and headaches in the pre-hospital environment.
“Blunt Trauma” ~ Jeff Hibbard, EMT-P, CCEMT-P
During this lecture, we will look at the mechanics of blunt force trauma, and the anatomy that could potentially be affected during
this trauma. By the end of this lecture, participants should have a clear understanding of the effects of blunt trauma to multiple
organ systems.
“Have you Lost your Mind?” ~ Jed Bowers, EMT-P
This lecture is all about the head. During this one hour lecture, we will cover head trauma signs and symptoms, mechanism of
injury and treatments.
“Blast Injuries from Iraq” ~ Bill Turton, RN, BSN, EMT-P, Major, U.S. Army National Guard - Baghdad, Iraq 2004-2005
Bill will share his experiences as a medical commander during his one year tour in Baghdad, Iraq. He will discuss everything from
preparation and deployment to care and treatment of multiple soldiers. The majority of the lesson will be focused on assessing a
victim of blast injuries, and the appropriate treatments.
“Wet ‘N Wild” ~ Kris Ruhl, NREMT-P, CCEMT-P, IC
Each year nearly one million people are injured while on the water. This lecture will look at the different injuries involved with water
sports. We will briefly discuss the anatomy and physiology of the body, and the most common types of injuries resulting from
accidents on the water. We will review the proper procedures and techniques for assessing and immobilizing patients in the water,
and also review proper extrication of the patient from the water.

Human Patient Simulation Workshops featuring METI Man will be taught in the LaSR Lab at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.
Participants will be shuttled to the LaSR Lab to perform real time based scenarios with patient assessment as their focal point.
Patient care will create interactive responses from the simulators. Adult and Pediatric METI Man simulators are high-tech training
devices designed to simulate human patients. They breathe, have pulses and can respond to patient care procedures. They get
you as close to real patient care as possible. The NOELLE (OB) child birth simulator delivers a simulation baby using a computercontrolled mechanism that slowly pushes the baby out, followed by a simulated placenta.
Course descriptions... Friday, February 11, 2011
“Spinal Trauma” ~ Matt Nofziger, NREMT-P, EMS-I
This lecture is designed to help EMS providers feel more comfortable handling spinal injuries. We will look at the patient’s signs
and symptoms, and treat the patient correctly. Treatment will not be determined by the mechanism of injury alone. We will also
discuss transport priorities and destinations.

Children have many of the same diseases and conditions as adults, yet assessments and management principals differ on some points.
We will review essential components of rapid pediatric assessments. This lecture will offer some “just-like-adult” treatments tips.

scene that has become unsafe.
“Adult Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation” ~ Rita Chambers, BBA, NREMT-P, EMS-I
1 out of every 9 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some form of abuse. Are EMS providers able to recognize this abuse,
