WELCOME TO OUR CATALOGUE FOR 2016–2017
It has been an exciting time for Elwin Street. Our list is expanding; we
present further titles from our successful ‘Alkaline’ series as well as
new titles The Miracle Broth Cure, Japanese Vegetarian Cooking and
the Sugar Detox Plan amongst others. We introduce our unique artcolouring range, launching Georgie Woolridge’s stunning titles Birds
and Waterlife as well as Abi Daker’s Landmarks of the World. Pavlov’s
Dog and the ‘Great Experiments’ series are proving hugely popular
as are the beautiful ‘Obsessions’ series.
And after 10 successful years as a international co-edition
publisher, we started an additional life as a UK publisher with the
launch of our new UK imprint Modern Books. The focus of this
trade list is creativity and mindful living; so it is appropriate that this
catalogue, kindly produced for us by our friends at Ricoh, is printed
on 100% recycled paper.
We are expanding but we remain a small creative team producing
beautiful, high-quality titles ahead of the curve. We know how to
make great illustrated books and offer a personal and collaborative
approach. Thanks are due to our creative contributors and
international publishing partners for their support and, if you don’t
know us already, enjoy browsing and get in touch.

A uninhabited,
craggy speck in
the middle of
the Caribbean,
Redonda
has been the
object of fierce
rivalry since its
sovereignty in
the 1860s.
T
he tiny island of Redonda could hardly be described as the jewel of the
Caribbean. A mere one mile in length, resembling a giant rock, its sole
inhabitants are a herd of feral goats and the occasional misplaced flock of
birds. Yet Redonda claims itself as a sovereign nation, counts Francis Ford Coppola
and J. M. Coetzee amongst its aristocracy, and is at the centre of an ongoing, and
rather bitter, sovereignty dispute.
Although Christopher Columbus officially discovered Redonda in 1493, claiming
the island for the Spanish, its history as a sovereign nation began in 1865 with the
birth of a child, and a rum-fuelled celebration. Mathew Dowdy Shiell, a native of
Ireland, and inhabitant of nearby Montserrat, had, at last, after eight daughters,
fathered a son, and to celebrate declared himself King of Redonda.
This caused no major problems, mainly because rivals to the Redonda throne
were in scarce supply, which meant fifteen years later it was easy enough for
Mathew to sail to Redonda and abdicate in favour of his son, also called Mathew,
who became King Philip of Redonda after being crowned by an Antiguan priest.
King Philip was not a hands-on ruler, immediately sailing off to England, where
he spent the first part of the twentieth century writing celebrated romantic novels,
never returning to the land of his crown. He did not forget his kingdom, however,
and on his death in 1947, he bequeathed it to his friend, the poet John Gawsworth.
The Curious Atlas sails to the remotest corners
of the globe, bringing back little-known but
very real micronations.
Gawsworth’s approach to sovereignty was a little surreal. He ennobled favoured
literary and artistic figures, including Dorothy Sayers, J. B. Priestly, Dirk Bogarde
and Henry Miller. In 1958, he attempted to sell his kingdom via a small ad in The
Times newspaper, and he began to barter aristocratic titles for drinks.
The result was chaos, the effects of which still reverberate in the present
day. After Gawsworth died in 1970, multiple claims to the throne emerged, and
learned scholars of Redondan history are now quite unable to agree about where
sovereignty legitimately rests. Some favour the claims of Spanish writer, Javier
Marias, who is championed by the literary and artistic fraternity. Others opt for
Jon Wynne-Tyson, Gawsworth’s literary executive, whose reluctance to take up
the office is perhaps his greatest recommendation.
The final words on Redondan history are perhaps best left to Jon, or King Juan
II, as his official title has it. The legend of Redonda is “a pleasing and eccentric fairy
tale; a piece of literary mythology to be taken with salt, romantic sighs, appropriate

This land of more than three-and-a-half million people, roughly the size of
England and Wales, has the appearance of a fully functioning state. It has its
own police force, army and even its own currency, the Somaliland Shilling.
Yet the status of this self-proclaimed republic remains ambivalent in the eyes
of the outside world. It is recognised by the international community as an
autonomous region, but not as a sovereign state. Diplomatic efforts to achieve
this status continue.
So what lies behind Somaliland’s drive for political independence? And what
distinguishes this north-western region from other areas of Somalia? To answer
these questions, it is necessary to return to the era of European colonialism.
During the 19th century, Somaliland came under increasing British influence,
largely as a result of its strategically important position on the Gulf of Aden. In
1888, it was declared a British ‘Protectorate’. Neighbouring areas, meanwhile,
came under Italian and French control around that time.
This division lasted until the mid-20th Century, when the colonial powers
withdrew from the Horn of Africa. For less than a week, in June 1960, Somaliland
officially became an independent territory; after which it united, as planned, with
the former Italian-controlled lands to form the modern Somali Republic. The idea

of Somaliland as an independent geopolitical identity had nonetheless been briefly
established, and would resurface again in the fullness of time.
Some thirty years later, in 1991, with the collapse of the socialist government
of Siad Barre, Somaliland declared its independence. Since then, it has had
four presidents, the latest of whom, Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo, came to power
in 2010 following elections that were declared to be largely free and fair by
international observers.
Somaliland has thus stayed free of the anarchy engulfing much of Somalia,
although the region is not entirely without problems. There is a simmering dispute
with Puntland, a semi-autonomous region to its east, over the control of border
provinces including Sanaag and Sool. Occasionally, this spills over into armed
skirmishes. In 2010, a province to the far west of Somaliland, Awdal, declared its
autonomy within a federal Somalia. Consequently, the local administration no
longer recognises Somaliland’s sovereignty over its territory.

The remarkable story of
Madison Avenue’s Golden Age
‘People ignore advertising because advertising
ignores people... You don’t just make
something and hope someone wants it. You
start with what the audience wants.’
In 1959, a softly spoken adman by the name of
Bill Bernbach, with his agency DDB, launched
the iconic VW campaign and kicked off a
dizzying decade of outstanding ads produced
by people who knew they were making waves
and making history.
Inspired by the critically acclaimed television

Helen Rumbelow,

THE ROLE YOUR BRAIN PLAYS
In order to guarantee its supply of sugar, the brain is equipped with
various energy control modules. These consist of a network of neurons
that originate in the uppermost hierarchical regions of the brain, then
pass over into the brain stem and from there travel out through the
body to the liver, pancreas and finally to the muscles.
If necessary our brain cells can also simply extract glucose from the
blood. The evidence for this kind of system is based on pathological
research carried by Marie Krieger in 1921. Looking at malnutrition in
young soldiers who died during the First World War, she established
that under conditions of starvation (and therefore sugar deprivation)
the internal organs shrink by up to 40 per cent. The one exception to
this is the brain, which at most loses two per cent of its overall mass.
So, although the brain only accounts for two per cent of the
body’s weight in terms of its mass, it requires a good half of the
daily intake of carbohydrates. In normal conditions it may consume
two-thirds of blood glucose quantities. Put under stress, our grey
matter can take up to 90 per cent of these valuable energy sources.
Warning Signs of Addiction
Frequent cravings for sweet things, snacking
between meals, a longing for fruit juices or
sweet drinks, an excessive predilection for bread,
noodles and pasta or pizza as well as high fruit
consumption in the evening should be enough to
make us prick up our ears and consider whether
or not we have developed an addiction. This is
particularly the case if we feel tired and less able
to concentrate after a meal.

addiction and the health repercussions
¡¡ Contains 38 easy to follow, delicious, sugarfree recipes
ARE YOU A SUGAR JUNKIE?
Professor Achim Peters, a doctor from Lübeck, Germany, has
identified that it is the sugar status in our brains rather than our blood
sugar levels in general that determine whether we develop an appetite
for particular nutrients, especially carbohydrates.
There are several additional indicators, as follows:
• mood swings and ‘energy crises’
• pressure or a feeling of tension in the abdomen
• difficulty in sleeping
• a state of anxiety, tension after eating
• particular cravings for dairy or starch
Retraining the Brain
Reprogramming your metabolism is possible. We know that the liver
can produce glucose itself from fats and amino acids and so is not
dependent on an external supply of sugar and carbohydrates. If there
is a stark reduction in the supply of carbohydrates and sugar, the brain
can actually generate its own super fuel in the form of substances
called ketone bodies. They are only produced by the body’s liver fat
metabolism when blood sugar levels are low and they act as a quickly
obtainable energy supply for sugar dependent organs like the brain.

ECHINACEA AND
RASPBERRY LEAF TEA
Echinacea stimulates the body’s immune system to fight off
bacterial and viral attacks and is a popular remedy for ’flu and
colds. The medicinal properties are found in the leaves, purple
flowers and roots and they are made into widely available
liquids. Native to North America, echinacea was used for
medicinal purposes by Plains Indians and it was on the USA list
of official approved therapies until 1950 when it was replaced
by antibiotics. If you grow raspberries pick a few leaves to add
to this tea or buy the dried ones.
Put the raspberry leaves in a cup and pour over the hot water.
Leave to infuse for five minutes. Add the echinacea liquid and
stir in. Strain out the leaves and serve with the fresh raspberry
on top.

‘This 7-Day

and our bodies.’
Pink grapefruit is sweeter than yellow grapefruit but is just as refreshing and
is packed with vitamin C. Sweeten if you like with a little honey or a few stevia
leaves. This is a good exercise in diluting strong drinks and making them last
longer; many commercial juices are sold too thick for our digestive systems.
1 pink grapefruit
1 lemon
1 lime
1 teaspoon honey or 2 stevia
leaves, optional
125 ml water
1 spring mint
You can make this by hand using a citrus press; cut the fruits in half and handsqueeze. If using a juicer, peel the grapefruit, lemon and lime and discard any
pips. Divide into segments and place in the juicer. Add the honey or stevia
leaves, if using, to your juice, and mix well. Pour into a glass and top with the
water. Pick the mint leaves off the sprig and place in a bowl or mortar and
crush with a pestle, muddler or wooden spoon to let the oils run. Add to the
juice as a garnish.
NOTE: Naturally sweet, stevia leaves are a great alternative to sugar. Add the
leaves to juices and smoothies if you need to.

The most important thing you will need when cooking is a BIG
saucepan. Sit it on your hob and when you drain vegetables or grains,
add the liquid in to make stock. If you want to take an alkaline diet
seriously, then having both an alkaline minestrone and a vegetable tea
to hand is going to take you a long way down the road, and this stock
will be crucial for those. Likewise, a loaf of spelt bread and a spread are
always handy to keep in the kitchen.
Nearly everything in this book is based around fresh foods and
preparing them from scratch. Make space in your kitchen for the
seasonal, organic and local vegetables that will form the basis of your
diet. Try to buy loose vegetables, too, because packets tend to make you
over-buy and are a false economy – buying just the fresh ingredients
that you need, in smaller amounts, means that what you eat contains
the maximum nutrition and will not cost the earth.
You will also need a big fruit bowl to remind you that you have fresh
fruit available all the time. It is important to let fruit ripen – the easiest
way to do that is to place the less ripe foods next to the riper ones
(particularly bananas, which ripen quickly) to bring them on.
Lots of fresh herbs – either growing in pots, or bunches kept with
the stems in a glass of water – will be invaluable, too.

Portions and Leftovers
Meal recipes in this book use the amount of ingredients needed
for one person, but this is easily doubled or quadrupled as required.
Occasionally, dishes made for sharing, such as our alkaline Sunday
roast, will serve more. Soup recipes all make one litre, as these can be
stored and reheated for dinners later on in the week, and spreads make
enough to last too.
If you have vegetables left over from a recipe, store them for use
in another recipe, add them to the stockpot, make them into a soup
or simply snack on them raw. If you continue to cook with alkaline
ingredients, a natural shopping rhythm will find its way into your life,
with fresh fruit and vegetables bought and used up often, and key
spices, herbs and dried ingredients always at hand.

Choosing between green, brown or red seaweed is not just a matter of
colour on the plate. From a biological and genetic point of view, these
three types of seaweed are very different. This is also true of their
taste. The green have a strong, fresh taste; the browns have a milder
flavour, which is almost sweet; and the reds have aromas that recall
the smoky flavours of tea or fungi.

Not to be confused with nori, aonori has
long thick threads which earns it the
nickname hair of the sea.
It has a green flavour, slightly peppery, full

Where does it come from?
What do I do with it?
Fresh and raw it works well in salads and

couple of minutes you can use it to wrap
other things like fish. Blended it works
as a thickener and colourant in soups
Despite its Japanese name, aonori is
in fact quite common around the French

it in Britain at low tide in shallow bays.
What does it taste like?
Mild and green.
What do I do with it?
The aonori is sold in small pieces which
are very easy to sprinkle over a dish or to

PRACTISE YOGA
The combination of movement, breathing and meditation that
makes up yoga practice helps to exercise the body and calm the
mind. There is also evidence that it can improve cognitive function.
In 2008, Indian yoga experts looked at the effect of yoga on
cognitive abilities in women with menopausal symptoms. They
divided 120 women into two groups and asked them to take part in
a study that would occupy an hour a day, five days a week for two
months. One group practised breathing exercises, sun salutations
and cyclic meditation, while the other did a set of simple physical
exercises. At the end of the study, the women in the yoga group had
fewer hot flushes and night sweats and less sleep disturbance, as
well as noted improvements in memory and concentration.

Most people practise hatha yoga, which uses postures, breathing
techniques and meditation to promote a sense of wellbeing. Hatha
yoga rests on the notion of balance and the union of opposites (‘Ha’
means the sun and ‘tha’ signifies the moon). Varying yoga styles
emphasise different approaches, ranging from the meditative
Ananda yoga to the highly vigorous Bikram yoga, which really gives
you a workout. Ashtanga yoga is a popular choice, a physical option
that begins with a sun salutation and is made up of sequences of
postures designed to strengthen and purify the nervous system.
But there is a range of different yoga styles out there, so you can
choose one that matches your needs and preferences.

Sit or lie comfortably.
Close your eyes and begin breathing deeply. Allow your thoughts and
worries to release with each exhalation. Instead concentrate on how your
body feels in the natural surroundings. Is the air warm or cold against
your skin? Does the air feel damp or dry. As you breathe in, notice the
earthy smells around you, perhaps the sweet and damp notes of the soil
or the soft floral scents of a nearby wildflower patch. Now move your
concentration to the sounds around you. Do you hear birds, a trickling
stream, the wind rustling the leaves? Now focus on one sound and listen
carefully to it, its quality, its variations. Do not judge or label the sound,
simply notice it, and make yourself at one with it.

it would translate as a ragoût — and insisted on grouping it with soups,
which obviously take much longer to prepare:
Is it possible that they never knew, when they were children,
the cosy pleasures of Sunday night supper in wintertime, when
crackers and the biggest tureen of steaming, buttery, creamy
oyster stew stood on the table, and was plenty?
Combine the clam juice, butter, Worcestershire sauce, and celery salt
in a saucepan over high heat. When the butter melts, add the oysters
and their liquor and cook, stirring, until the edges of the oysters begin
to ruffle. Remove the oysters with a slotted spoon and keep warm. Stir
in the half-and-half (milk and single cream) and cook, stirring often,
until it is just coming to a boil. Return the oysters to the pan and turn
off the heat. Pour the stew into a warmed soup plate. Garnish with
a shake of paprika and serve immediately, with oyster crackers.
Another great oyster institution, founded just after the height
of this bonanza, was the Grand Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant in
Manhattan. Built in 1913, not under the waves but appropriately perhaps
under Grand Central Terminal, it still uses more than 283,000 oysters per
year in its famous pan roasts and stews — 600 of which are made to order
each day. Another 1.7 million oysters are served raw during the year;
more than half are Blue Points.

‘Tucked darkly in
their calciferous
shells, listening
warily for dangers,
breathing oxygen
into the water,
sifting the silt,

the oyster has

histories, all our
struggles.’
For 1,500 years or more, painters had dedicated
themselves to religious iconography. Then, all of a
sudden, in one small northern European country,
they changed direction and devoted themselves to
things secular. What was the trigger? The first half of
the 1600s was still a period of religious passions
and a formative era in Christianity. Amidst all this,
one society began to accept that there were other
things besides God that might be worth painting.
But who was brave enough to commission the first
nonreligious painting? Perhaps it was simply that
the Dutch, as the first to profit from empire, had
suddenly become rich and secular.
As women were closer to the food, some, like
Clara Peeters, began to challenge the male trades.
Her tones survive, still rich, elegant, and
domestically formal. Her meticulous visual
descriptions continue to impress. In Still Life of Fish
and Cat you can see the textures plainly: slippery
fish scales, thickly glazed clay, the cat’s fur, the
contrast between the rough shell of the open
oyster and the gleaming pewter dish on which it
rests. There are other hints to animation here too:
the small fish on which the cat has firmly planted its
front paws, the cat’s ears pointed back, alert to any
potential interloper.

Criss-cross from top to bottom
over the hole, until it is covered
with parallel rows of thread.
Then, darn across. Begin to
“weave” horizontally over and
under alternate strands of your
vertical stitching.
First, darn up and down.
Work from the wrong side,
starting and finishing a good
distance away from the hole,
on the “good” part of the fabric
– to provide reinforcement.
Start by anchoring the thread
using one or two running
stitches in the fabric at the
bottom edge of the hole.

Simple projects and pieces of advice are
gathered together in this unique and charming
book to rediscover the pleasure and sense of
fulfilment given by domestic creativity whether
crafting, cleaning or decorating a home.
Includes step-by-step guidance on indoor
activities from simple tasks such as sewing,
fabric care or making calming scented candles,
to the more elaborate etiquette of having
guests to stay or throwing a drinks party.
Darning needle
Thread (match the yarn to the
fabric as closely as possible)
Mushroom (to hold behind
the hole to create tension)
This time, only work back and
forth over the actual hole, plus
a few strands into the thinning
sections on each side. In alternate rows, pick up the strands
of yarn you passed over in the
previous row. This creates
the “weave” effect.
Carry the thread across the gap
to the top of the hole and anchor it with a small stitch there.
Finish off with a few small
running stitches through
the fabric.

MAKING A L AVENDER BAG
Fragrantly scented sachets are a wonderful way to keep your
wardrobes and drawers smelling fresh. They also make a lovely
homemade gift.
Cut a rectangle from a piece of
pretty fabric – about the size of
a postcard.
Next, sew a ¼ -inch (½ -cm)
seam along the bottom edge of
the tube, to complete the bag.
Sew a ½-inch (1-cm) hem along
one long edge of the rectangle.
This will be the top of your
lavender bag, so make sure any
pattern in the fabric is oriented
the right way.
Turn the fabric right side out,
push out the corners fully,
and press.
Thread a length of narrow
ribbon through the hem at the
top of the bag to make a drawstring. You can tie the ribbon to
a safety pin to guide it through.
Fold the rectangle in half, the
right side of the fabric facing
inward, so that the two short
edges come together.
Fill the bag with a spoonful or
two of dried lavender and pull
the drawstring to close. Tie a
double knot to keep it secure,
and a bow to make it pretty.
Starting from just beneath the
hem, sew a ¼-inch (½ -cm)
seam – to join the two short
edges of the fabric. You should
now have a fabric tube with
the hemmed edge at the top.
Replace the lavender once
every month or so.
