How Much Do You Know . . . about Mooseheart Child City & School? Supported by Moose
International, it's been located on Route 31 just south of Batavia for 100 years. Learn more
about Mooseheart from its Executive Director Gary L. Urwiler during the next New Lyceum
Lecture Series program, “Mooseheart—A Century of Giving,” Monday, December 7, at 7 p.m. Urwiler, a Mooseheart graduate (Class
of 1987) will talk about the history and future of Mooseheart and his life there as a student and administrator. Registration required.
The Sundays on Stage . . . entertainment series features two spirited programs in December. On December
6 at 2 p.m., “Bette Davis” is portrayed by actress and historian Leslie Goddard. On December 13 at 2 p.m.,
“The Essential Christmas Carol” is dramatized by author William Pack. Please register online at

Family Fun . . . Puppeteer Dave Herzog will bring his marionettes to the Library for a
family show, “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland,” Monday, December 21, at 10:30 a.m. Join Dave, Frosty, and
many other characters as they ring in the holidays. Registration is not required. Doors to the Founders Room
open at 10:15 a.m.
The Library Will Be Closed . . . Thursday, December 24; Friday, December 25; Friday, January 1. The
Library will be open Thursday, December 31, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
At Your Service . . . Patron holds are now accessible in a Self Service Holds area to the north of the Check
Out Desk. All items on hold for patrons, with some exceptions, will be located on these shelves. Holds can be
identified by the first two initials of a patron’s last name, followed by the last six digits of their library card number. Because names are
not used, this method will preserve patron privacy. Exceptions: Video games, Nooks, Interlibrary loans (items coming from outside of
the LINC consortium), and items pulled from the shelves immediately after a phone call to Adult Services or Youth Services. These
items will be held on the shelves behind the Check Out Desk. Note: Check Out Desk employees are happy to retrieve holds for
anyone who prefers the traditional method. The new Self Service Holds will allow patrons the flexibility to come in, pick up their holds,
use the Self Check Out machine or the Check Out Desk, and be on their way!
Board of Library Trustees Meeting: Tuesday, January 19, at 7 p.m., in the Library Conference Room. There is no board meeting in
December. Meetings are open to the public. The Next Meeting . . . of the Batavia Public Library Writers Workshop is Monday, December 14. Experienced and
novice writers of all genres meet to perfect their craft by offering each other constructive criticism and support. The
group meets on the second Monday of every month. Registration is not required. For more information, contact the

A Vintage Book Sale . . . hosted by the Friends will take place on Saturday, December 5,
from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Library Conference Room. Older books, classics, sets, novels, nonfiction, large
maps, and old textbooks will be for sale as well as gift­quality coffee table books and newer sets. The Friends Holiday Book Sale will take place in the Friends’ Book Corner throughout the month of December. A nice selection of

Programs for Adults
Mooseheart—A Century of Giving: Monday, December 7, 7 p.m. Gary L. Urwiler, executive director
of Mooseheart Child City & School, talks about the history and future of Mooseheart and his life there as
a student (Class of 1987) and administrator. Registration required.
Bette Davis: Sunday, December 6, 2 p.m. In such classic films as Jezebel, Dark Voyager, The Letter,
and All About Eve, Bette Davis created a new kind of heroine: strong, outspoken, luxurious, and sometimes wicked. And her personal
life was as tempestuous as her life onscreen. Meet this fascinating star from the Golden Age of Hollywood, as presented by actress
Leslie Goddard. Registration required.
The Essential Christmas Carol: Sunday, December 13, 2 p.m. To pay off some debt, Charles Dickens quickly
wrote A Christmas Carol. Little did he know it was destined to become one of the most enduring Christmas
stories of all time. His public readings of the story were dramatic, hypnotic, and hugely popular. Author William
Pack tells the story behind the story and recreates a Victorian era magic lantern show of A Christmas Carol,
while reading from the abridged version of this classic story. Registration required.
Books Between Bites: Thursday, December 17, 12 p.m. Batavian Roger Breisch
always challenges us to think more deeply. We welcome him back to discuss Charles Eisenstein’s book, The
Ascent of Humanity: Civilization and the Human Sense of Self, in which Eisenstein explores human thought
and how humanity came to this place and time. The book challenges some fundamental beliefs about many
topics—including language, time, fire, science, and mathematics—and illustrates how they impact our current
view of the world. How does our separation from the rest of the biosphere jeopardize our future, and how
might we see our current path in new ways? No registration required.
January Book Discussion: Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. Tuesday, January 12, 7:30 p.m.
Inspired by the film The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli and her three friends leave their tiny Mexican village to bring home seven men to
protect their home. As Nayeli marches north, she finds far more than she'd been looking for. No registration required.
Genealogy Research Help: Are you researching your family tree? Are you just getting started or have you hit a research wall?
Schedule an appointment with a librarian for a one­hour, one­on­one session to guide you in your genealogy research. Appointments

Computer Coaching Sessions: Basic computer training is available at the Library. Schedule an appointment with a
technology assistant for a one­hour, one­on­one coaching session based on your individual needs. Sessions are

Inclusion Movie Night: Tuesday, December 1, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Teens and young adults of all abilities—
and their families and friends—are invited to watch movies and meet new people in a relaxed setting. No
registration required.
Inclusion Game Night: Wednesday, December 9, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Teens of all abilities—and their families
and friends—are invited to the Library to meet new people and play a board game or card game in a relaxed setting. No registration
required.
Anime Club: Thursday, December 10, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Teens are invited to the Library to watch anime movies, preview new shows on
DVD, and meet other anime and manga enthusiasts. No registration required.

All About Scholarships: Sunday, January 3, 1–2 p.m. Teens can learn basic tips on how to apply for scholarships from successful
applicants. Registration required.
FAFSA Form Workshop: Tuesday, January 5, 7 p.m. Is your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
form done? Get answers to your questions from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Registration required.
Programs for Youth
For a complete listing and details of all December programs offered by the Youth Services department, please refer to the Library’s
Programs/Events page. Unless otherwise indicated, program registration begins Tuesday, December 1. Priority is given to Batavia
Public Library cardholders. Programs for Families Find Frosty the Snowman and his Frozen Friend Olaf: Find a picture of Frosty or Olaf who are hiding
in the Youth Services department between Monday, November 30, and Saturday, December 12, and
receive a treat when you bring the picture to the Youth Services Desk.
Observation Station: Drop by the Youth Services department to explore our Observation Station,
December 1–19. The station will include an in­house and/or take­home activity.
Snowman Guessing Jar: Stop by the Youth Services department and guess how many marshmallows
are in the jar for a chance to win a prize, December 7–21.
Cookie Decorating: Drop in to decorate a holiday cookie, Saturday, December 12, 1–2:30 p.m.; or
Thursday, December 17, 10–11:30 a.m. No registration required.
Drop­In Craft: Drop in and make a foam Frosty ornament, Monday, December 14, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.; Tuesday, December 15, 4–6 p.m.;
or Saturday, December 19, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. Children age 6 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

Programs for Students
Anybook Club: Students in grades 4–8 are invited to join us for snacks, games, and book­related banter, Tuesday, December 8, 4
p.m. You can talk about the books you’ve read and we’ll tell you about some you might like. You don’t have to read anything in
particular, just come to enjoy book­related activities. Registration required.
Book Worms: Stories, games, and a craft for students in kindergarten and first grade, Wednesday, December 9, 4:30 p.m.
Registration required.
Middle School Advisory Council: Join the Batavia Public Library’s Middle School Advisory council, Monday, December 14, 4 p.m.
We meet once a month to plan activities for students at the Library and work on projects to benefit the Library and community. We also

Curiosity Club: Through books, games, and experiments, students in grades K–2 will explore a variety of
science and nature topics, Wednesday, December 16, 4:30 p.m. Each participant will receive a take­home
activity. Registration required.
Game Day—Card Edition: Students ages 6–12 are invited to play Pokémon, YuGiOh, Uno, Go­Fish, and other card games, Monday,
December 21, 2–4 p.m. Bring a deck if you have one. No registration required.
Star Wars Celebration: Students in grades 2–4 are invited to come and celebrate the release of the newest
Star Wars movie with everything Star Wars—snacks, games, and surprises, Tuesday, December 22, 11
a.m. Space is limited. Registration required.
Lego® Fun: Children ages 4–11 can build with the Library’s Lego or Duplo bricks, Tuesday, December 29, 10 a.m. An adult must
accompany children ages 4–6. Space is limited. No registration required. A Batavia Public Library card is required for admission.
Game Day: Looking for something to do or want to try your new game? Students ages 7–14 can stop by for games—Wii, DDR, chess,

Present your Batavia Public Library card to receive entry tickets. Tickets will be handed out beginning
twenty minutes before the program until they are gone. Space is limited.
