Mission Statement:
Department Hours
To enhance the quality of life of all Goochland citizens by providing, developing and
advocating for quality parks and recreational resources and leisure services.
It is hard to believe that Winter is over and Spring is almost through. Summer is just
around the corner! Goochland County Parks, Recreation & Facilities is working hard to
ensure that you have plenty of opportunities to play and relax in the summer sun.
Nothing says summer more than spending time outside, so spend some time outside at
one of Goochland’s parks! Experience a walk along the James River at Tucker Park, ride
or hike the multiuse trails at Leakes Mill Park, take in a baseball game at Hidden Rock
Park, hit around some tennis balls at the Reynolds Recreation Complex, or play on the
new playground at the soon to be open Matthews Park. A full description of our facilities
are available in “Fun Place and Open Spaces” or they can be viewed on the county web at
www.goochlandva.us.
Be sure to check out the Summer Camps for 2016. Recreation team members have
been working hard to ensure that cost effective, affordable, and quality summer camp
programs are offered to kids of all ages, skills, and abilities. Everything from ballet to
baseball is being offered throughout the summer!
Lastly, don’t forget to bring your family and friends to the annual July 4th fireworks
display! And remember, Goochland County is an amazing place to live, learn, and play!

EVOLUTION AT SECOND UNION ROSENWALD
SCHOOL MUSEUM CONTINUES!
As Second Union (Rosenwald) School (SURS) Living Museum
prepares for 2016, we are excited as new ideas evolve to present
and offer to our members and to the public. Of course, one of our
main focus remain with the youth, encouraging tours, educational
presentations, and bringing our school outreach programs in
line with the Standards of Learning (SOLs). We welcome the
support of school administrators, teachers and most importantly
the community. Current displays about Slavery, Civil War,
Reconstruction, Rosenwald Schools, Julius Rosenwald, Booker
T. Washington, Goochland History, Goochland Schools and
Integration have been provided by retired teachers, graduates and
proficient display organizers. Rosenwald alumni are providing
valuable information for future displays. In the future there will be
additional information about the 1920’s through the 1950’s that will be displayed by board members.
We will continue with events from past years such as the Rassawek Spring Jubilee, Black History Presentations, tours of the museum with the
general public and other events of interest for everyone. Notifications will be placed on SURS’s website, in flyers and the Goochland Gazette.
We look forward to increasing the membership. We want you to become a member and/or volunteer to be part of the evolution. Come and
see what this school has to offer and learn something new about American and local history. In 2016, a newsletter was published providing
information about SURS activities. We remain passionately committed to our mission “Embracing the challenges derived from the struggles
of African Americans, the Second Union (Rosenwald) School museum will preserve, promote, and inspire life-long leaning opportunities for
future generations in our community and beyond.”

Goochland Anti-Litter
& Recycling Council
GARC is a community organization made up of local residents interested in promoting and developing anti-litter and recycling programs throughout the county. Our members are
involved in educational activities and contests, road and river clean ups, and special recycling events. We have quarterly meetings each season. If you would like to become a
member, volunteer at one of below clean ups or recycling events, or just want to share an idea concerning litter or recycling, please let us know.
Special Recycling Events
The Goochland Anti-Litter and Recycling Council (GARC) holds special recycling events throughout the year, including:
•
Tire Amnesty Day
•
Community Shred Events
•E-cycling
•
Household Hazardous Waste
These special events are typically held on a Saturday. Notice of such events will be in the Goochland Gazette and on the Community Calendar.
Adopt-a-Spot
Similar to Adopt-a-Highway, GARC is looking for community volunteer groups or businesses that would like to adopt a public spot. Each group will be responsible for cleaning up
your adopted spot four times a year and submitting a brief report about the clean up. In return, your group’s name will be put on a sign displayed prominently at the park. In concert
with this project, GARC is also developing a new logo to be used on the sign! The following spots are available for adoption:
•
Goochland Sports Complex
•
Central Recreation Complex
James River Regional Clean up
Mark your calendars for September 10, 2016! There are many volunteer opportunities for different ages and abilities- from paddling the river to roadway cleanups to assisting
participants with registration. This is a great volunteer activity for families, civic organizations, businesses, youth groups, or anyone who is interested in cleaning up Goochland’s
riverfront and roadways. GARC provides volunteer staff for this event at Tucker Park, located on Rt. 522.
Event Recycling
GARC loans out temporary recycling bins to be used for local special events, festivals, or any large events that may generate a lot of recyclables. These bins will be available to the
community organizations free of charge. Event coordinators will be responsible for changing out the bags when full and taking the recyclables to a local convenience center.
Roadside Litter Pick up
Many roadways in Goochland are in need of cleanup. The best and safest way to get involved is to adopt the roadway that affects your property. Volunteers agree to pick up litter four
times a year for two years. In return, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides trash bags, vests, important safety information, and highway signs that recognize
your group. To get involved, call Debbie Montgomery, VDOT Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator, at (804) 752-5521 to find out what roads are available for adoption. If you are not
interested in committing to the VDOT program, but would still like to engage in litter pickups at the local level, please call Leigh Dunn at 556-5850 to obtain litter bags, grabbers,
and vests.

Solid Waste & Recycling
Curbside Recycling
Goochland County works with subdivisions and other individual areas in eastern and central portions of the County to provide curbside
recycling. This service is provided at an annual cost of $25 per year, per household. As of July 1, 2015, 33 subdivisions are participating in this
program, totaling 1,300 households. If your subdivision is interested in the curbside recycling service, please call (804) 556-5850.
Drop-Off Recycling
The green drop-off bins are individually labeled for mixed paper and mixed food/beverage containers and have a divider in the center to keep
the items separate. Residents collecting paper items at home for drop-off recycling can combine mixed paper items such as junk mail,
cardboard, computer and office paper, phone books, and cereal/dry food boxes.
Aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles and jars should be contained separately from the mixed paper items. All recyclable
containers should be rinsed, but labels do not need to be removed. Please do not place plastic bags (garbage or grocery) filled with recyclables
into the drop-off containers.
Appliances/White Goods
The Freon recovery program enables participating jurisdictions to comply with state and federal regulations which ban the atmospheric
release of Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) and Hydrochloroflourocarbons (HCFCs). Many used and discarded appliances such as refrigerators,
freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain these ozone-depleting gases. By recycling these items, the Freon gases are extracted and
the empty appliances will also be recycled.
Household Wastes
Goochland County also accepts motor oil, oil filters, anti-freeze, paint and other materials.
Acceptable paint materials include: latex and oil-based paints, varnish/shellac, stain and tints, paint and lacquer thinners, polyurethane,
primer, turpentine, oil additives, leaded/unleaded gasoline, and gasoline additives. The County also accepts used propane tanks, and
rechargeable and lead acid batteries.
Brush/Yard Waste
Recycling is also available for brush (no stumps or grass clippings). Tree debris is recycled into mulch and is made available for sale to the
public, when available.

clean and dry grocery, bread, newspaper, or packaging film, or dry cleaning bags.
Electronics Recycling
Equipment collected in this program will be disassembled and recycled under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. Computer
hard drives will be processed to Department of Defense/National Security Administration standards. Documentation of data destruction
is also available upon request for a $5.00 fee. Consumer electronic items will not be accepted through this program. These items include,
but are not limited to small appliances (toasters, blenders, hair dryers, vacuums, etc.), handheld power tools, fans, de-humidifiers, or lamps.
However, some of these household items may be accepted for scrap metal recycling. If you are unsure, make sure you ask an attendant before
disposing. See the County website for a list of acceptable items.
