School Board meeting
Superintendent Linda
Underwood presented
members statistics broken down by school and
grade. These numbers
showed that class size
increased county-wide
in all grades except kindergarten.
At Goochland Middle
School 7 th and 8 th grade
class sizes jumped from
14.5 students to 20.7
per class, approaching
the 21 to 1 ratio set by
Virginia’s Standards of
Quality.
At Goochland High
School class sizes averaged 20.2 pupils in 2010,
up from 17.41 one year
ago. The SOQ maximum
T H E
for high school is also
21 to 1.
“So we’re coming
close to the standards
in the high school and
middle school?” asked
District 3 Board Member
Ivan O. Mattox.
“Unfortunately with
budget cuts come bigger
class sizes,” said District
1 Member James L.
Haskell.
Under wood
noted
that statistics for GMS
reflected the recent
addition
of
three
English and two math
sections, added after the
county received money
from Federal Education
Job Fund Resources for
additional positions.
District 2 Member
Raymond A. Miller
was curious about the
consequences
should
class sizes continue to
increase.
“What is the penalty
for exceeding SOQ standards?” he asked.

tion, but added that the system
would ask for a waiver if that
should occur.
In other business, the board
approved asking the Goochland
County Board of Supervisors for
a supplemental appropriation of
$495,747 of unexpended federal
grant funds to be added to the FY
2011 fiscal year budget.
“We cannot spend more money
than the supervisors appropriate,
even though it is federal grant
money,” said Underwood. “They
must appropriate them so we can
access them.”
The largest fiscal amounts
involved come from SFSF Basic
State Aid ($154,543 from federal
funds used to ease the shortfall of
state aid) and Federal Education
Job Funds ($260,514).
Underwood said that the
Federal Education Job Funds can
be stretched for two years, but
added that she was unclear if the
SFSF funds, all of which is used for
salaries, must be completely spent
this year.
“We’re still getting clarification
on that,” she said Monday.
Underwood said the system
would “hoard” some of the money
since a number of positions that are
funded by stimulus funds would
otherwise be gone by next year.
In other action, Goochland
Middle School Assistant Principal
Christin Ciminelli gave board
members a report on the bullying
prevention program at the middle
school.
“We are focusing on changing
the climate so bullying is negated,”
said Ciminelli. “The next step is to
get the parents involved.”
Board members and the superintendent also briefly discussed the
day-long retreat held November 8.
“It was a very exciting day,” said
School Board Chairman Maxwell
Cisne.
Underwood called the retreat
“productive,” saying the board
identified 10 sub-committees, for
which community members would
be sought, to address aspects of the
system. Recommendations might
then be incorporated in a comprehensive strategic plan for the
school system.

Farm to School program brings
local food to Goochland students
By Ken Odor
[email protected]
It was a Virginia grown menu
Friday at Goochland Elementary
School, as students ate tacos made
with beef from Goochland’s
own Brookview Farm, broccoli
from Surry County, apples from
Winchester and squash from
Carroll County.
“It tastes like sweet potatoes,”
said third grader Nick Powell after
he took a few bites of butternut
squash served up by Supervisor of
School Nutrition Lisa BorthwickLandrum and Extension Agent
Jocelyn Dailey, Goochland Unit
Coordinator for the Virginia
Cooperative Extension.
Regional
Commodity
Manager Rebecca McGeorge
from the Virginia Department of
Agriculture dropped by to help
out too.
“The kids usually like the vegetables after they taste them,” said
McGeorge.
Last week was part of Virginia’s
second Farm to School Week,
celebrated throughout the state
at schools from kindergartens
through universities.
“Buying local has proven
to not only be a healthy, tastier
option,” said Landrum, “but cost

effective as well. Landrum said
that through the USDA commodity food purchasing, schools
can get Virginia grown produce at
reduced cost.
At least one Virginia grown
vegetable was on the menu at
every Goochland school each day
last week, said Landrum.
Dailey worked with Landrum
to help plan the menus and the
Extension Service provided educational materials for the students
to take home.
On Tuesday, Byrd Elementary
School first graders harvested
spinach they grew in their own
school garden, said Landrum.
They brought it into the kitchen
where the cafeteria ladies cooked
it up and added it to the lunch
menu.
Then on Thursday, fourth and
fifth graders at Byrd E.S. harvested lettuce, cabbage, radishes and
green onions for lunch.
Not only does using locally
grown food help reduce food costs
for the schools but it also generates
income for Virginia farmers.

Goochland artist shows his work
The Nutcracker
By Ken Odor

“A Holiday Fairy Tale that will entertain the whole family”
GOOCHLAND
High School Auditorium
3250-A River Road West
Goochland, VA 23063
On a bright, clear Saturday afternoon,
Goochland artist Andre Lucero invited
guests to his second annual open studio
show.
Lucero, 43, is a happy man, doing
what he loves. He’s been painting since he
graduated from VCU, where he majored
in illustration.
And he’s never had a job. At least not
a full-time permanent one.
He’s always free-lanced, even during
the days when he worked as an illustrator
for nationally known clients.
Taking a break from talking with his
guests, Lucero recalled a part-time job
working for Best Products one summer.
His task was to draw the plan-o-grams
used to set up the merchandise in new
stores.
“I was like a caged animal,” he recalls.
“I knew then I didn’t want a job,” he
explained.
After 10 years of doing free-lance
illustration, Lucero returned to painting
full-time and has never looked back, even
in hard times like the last two years.
“The market has changed,” said
Lucero. “It’s much tighter. You have to
work harder to make the same money.”
But Lucero isn’t complaining, he’s
doing what he wants to do and making
a living.
“It’s a labor of love,” he said of his
work in oils in what he calls “painterly
realism.”
A labor that has taken him many places in the past couple years, like Ireland
and Italy, Maine and Massachusetts.
In Italy Lucero and his wife Erin,
a fundraiser for MCV, spent a week
in Tuscany not far from Pisa, the city

Lucero said he likes to have fun
when he paints, working in a style called
“impasto,” using quick thick strokes
heavy with pigment.
No scraping paint away with the palette knife for him.
“I’m as interested in the process as the
result,” he said, explaining that he paints
very fast when working outdoors.

the subject of media coverage last year due to his dispute with the Sussex Square
neighborhood association
over his unauthorized flagpole.
It took the intervention
of the American Legion,
senators and congressmen,
not to mention thousands of
supporters, before the neighborhood association finally
relented and allowed Barfoot
to fly Old Glory every day.
But last week that was all
in the past.
What was new last
Thursday was the tribute students and others paid to the
Colonel and all the nation’s
veterans.
Barfoot received the
Medal of Honor for his
actions on May 23, 1944,
near Carano, Italy, when he
took on three German tanks
(after putting three German
machine gun positions out
of action, killing numerous
enemy soldiers and taking 17
prisoners).
And although Barfoot was
the Guest of Honor, the ceremony honored every U.S.
veteran.
“The reason there is freedom around the world today
is because of the valor of U.S.
veterans,” said Joe Wadle,
First Vice Commander of
American Legion Post 215.
Post Commander Matt
Kalan read from the journal
of a Marine.
Called “Principles my
Father Taught Me,” the journal entry read in part:
“Live with integrity…
Believe in something bigger than yourself…Conquer
your fears…Be valorous on
the field of battle…Take
responsibility for your
actions always.”
Kalan then revealed that
the author, Major Douglas
Zemiec, died while attacking
the enemy March 11, 2007.
He was serving his fourth
tour of duty in Iraq.
At least one young student was touched by the program.
“I actually cried a little,”
said 14-year-old Jesse Short,
who plays flute in the GHS
Band.
“They’ve done so much
for us,” said Short of the
contributions of the nation’s
veterans.
Barfoot’s remarks were
brief. A native of Mississippi,
he praised the hospitality of
Virginians and encouraged
young people to consider
joining the military.
“If you have the strength
and ability to serve your
country, nothing is more
important,” said Barfoot.
The program also featured
the hymns of each branch of
the armed services and veterans were asked to stand
when theirs was played.
As always, members of
the post auxiliary placed a
memorial wreath for fallen
veterans at the front of the
auditorium.
After the familiar strains
of Taps sounded to end the
program, Col. Barfoot spent
at least 15 minutes shaking
hands, posing for photographs and receiving thanks
from the crowd, particularly
from GHS students.

Fighting for respect
So what’s happened to respect
these days?
I believe that our county’s, and our
country’s, celebration of Veteran’s Day
last week was a timely reminder that
people serve each other best when
they do so as members of a shared
mission.
My father tells me that the respect
that you learn in the service is not
really for the politicians, it’s not for
the president or for members of congress. And, he added, it’s not really for
the generals or the admirals.
The respect that resonates is the
respect for the man or woman who
stands next to you, who works at
your side sorting boxes in the mail
room, tending to the wounded at a
support hospital, tuning up engines
in a garage.
And, he told me, no one person is
more important than another; from
the supply sergeant who makes sure a
soldier has the boots he needs to the
colonel mapping out strategies, each
person is adding their efforts to the
common good.
My dad is a retired Marine Corps
colonel, who was the son of a Navy
captain, and my mother’s father was
also a Marine Corps colonel-- I come
from a long line of men who soldiered
up and women who supported them.
I believe in the core values these
people passed on to me: I believe
in honor, and integrity, and in preserving our rights as people and as
Americans.
I also happen to be a Christian,
and my faith has taught me to be tolerant, and empathetic, and caring.
But during our last elections, and
during the nightly news on nearly
any of our increasingly divisive news
networks, I don’t see many of those
values coming into play; what I see is
people attacking certain individuals
for not being Christian enough or
patriotic enough, often at the expense
of a discussion of issues that affect
us all.
I do not believe that Christianity
and patriotism are partisan.
I also do not believe that people
have to agree with my religious, political or philosophical views.
There seem to be too many people
who believe that all Democrats have
been brainwashed by the liberal elite,
and that all conservatives have been
reeducated by a Republican conspiracy.
Such thinking discounts the opportunity for us all to form our own
opinions, and it is disrespectful of our
ability to achieve rational and well-reasoned conclusions.
If we cannot discuss poverty, unemployment and inadequate healthcare
without turning those pragmatic issues
into religious or philosophical debates,
without tossing out our ability to truly
listen to all sides so that we can make
an informed decision, then I don’t see
how we will ever achieve solutions.
And that kind of ineffective communication discounts a lesson learned
by those who have fought for our
freedom: A company or platoon that
cannot find a way to work together is
embarking on a doomed mission.

America’s freedom of
choice
Kudos to Amy Condra for her
editorial regarding bullying.
It is very important to be aware
that often the most prevalent cause
of bullying is being different, whether or not that difference is by choice.
We forget, perhaps, that the very
concept of freedom is about choice:
To be able to exercise the option of
“doing” or “not doing” any particular
thing.
Obviously, in order to have some
semblance of order in society, we
need to have some laws that some-
times limit that sense of choice,
i.e., the “choice” to murder or steal
(actions that infringe on the rights
of others).
However, when laws are put forth
that are based solely on imposing the
choices of a perceived majority, freedom is diminished for everyone.
In school we were all taught about
the early immigrants who came to
this country seeking religious freedom. Have we forgotten that once
they acquired it, they denied it to
others? Good examples of those victimized by Puritan bigotry are Roger
Williams and Anne Hutchinson.
And don’t forget the Native
Americans and the “witches,” to add
some more.
Historically, Christians have
been some of the biggest bullies the
world has ever known, not only
against “non-believers,” but also
against theological dissenters within
Christianity itself.
The citizens of this country are
of many faiths. (Actually, that has
always been true, just not recognized
or publicized.) For the beliefs and
practices of one faith to take precedence over that of another is an
affront to the equality promised in
our Constitution and Declaration of
Independence.

The National Kidney
Foundation
Last Monday was a special
birthday. The National Kidney
Foundation (NKF) was founded
on November 15, 1950 by the
parents of a toddler stricken with
what was then called nephrosis.
It was incurable. In 1950 if your
kidneys failed, you died. NKF
was there in the early days to support patients and their families.
Over the past sixty years,
there has been a revolution in
treatment and detection. Kidney
failure became treatable with
the advent of the first successful
kidney transplant in 1954. This
was followed by the invention
of the Teflon shunt in 1964 that
made access to a patient’s blood
possible and dialysis that performs the kidney’s job of cleaning the blood became routine.
Today, 565,000 Americans with
kidney failure live, work, and
enjoy life because of these lifesaving treatments.
Scientists have learned that
kidney disease is progressive so
detection and medical intervention can start early, well before
kidneys fail. 26 million people,
many with diabetes or high blood

Celebrating the
holidays
As a Goochland County resident, taxpayer and voter, I visit
our county’s website often.
Last week, in doing so for
budget research, I noticed a very
visible, perhaps due to using
the color red, information link
titled, “Community Holiday Tree
Lighting.”
Knowing how our Goochland
County government prides itself
as being on the “bleeding edge”
edge of the cultural cleaver the
red, blood-like, type was quite
appropriate.
In following the link to learn
more about this newfangled
“Holiday Tree,” I learned the event
was being held at the our local
YMCA (does the “C” stand for
Civic?), there would be Caroling
(Holiday Caroling?) and Santa
Claus would make an appearance…sure sounds like an oldfashioned Christmas Tree to me!
Only in Goochland could we, for
reasons yet publicly unknown,
rename one of America’s best
known icons. I say that having
researched a much higher authority, and I mean governmental, not
religious.
As much as I disagree with
our current president’s policies,
I can agree with at least one
thing he has done. I checked,
and Americans will have a 2010
White House Christmas Tree
at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Our governor, Bob McDonnell,
is displaying a Nativity scene in
www.goochlandgazette.com
the Executive Mansion this year.
Virginia’s Attorney General, Ken
“(Bob) Cratchit” Cuccinelli, said
in August, “a locality can erect
holiday Christmas displays on
public property, as long as the
displays are balanced to represent
other faiths and secular beliefs.”
Goochland has a Christmas
Mother. Our Amelia County
neighbors even have a Christmas
Father. If we need a Menorah,
Eid Tree and Seven Principles
display to share room with our
Goochland County Christmas
Tree, then so be it. I’ll even
provide Glenn Beck’s Merry
RamaHanuKwanzMas lyrics.
We can find Centerville,
Rockville,Oilville,andHadensville
on a current county map.
In 2011, we’ll add another
“ville,” with my apologies to Dr.
Seuss -

Saints serve up state championship
Fourth time the charm
for St. Catherine’s
BY CHARLIE LEFFLER
[email protected]
For the fourth year in a
row, the St. Catherine’s girls
tennis team advanced to the
VIS Division I state championship match. And for the second
consecutive season it was local
rival Collegiate that awaited
them. In every previous trip,
the Saints came away emptyhanded, but on Saturday, the
fourth time was the charm as
St. Catherine’s defeated the
Cougars 5-4 to claim their first
state championship trophy.
The two teams split regular
season meetings and Collegiate
edged St. Catherine’s in the LIS
championship. Therefore, the
fourth meeting between the
two teams was not expected to
go easily for either.
The nearly five hour match
played at St. Christopher’s
was almost a mirror image of
last year’s title contest where
Collegiate entered the tournament ranked number one and
St. Catherine’s number two.
The Cougars pulled out the
2009 championship in a match
decided in a doubles tiebreak.
This year the rankings were
reversed and once again the
contest came down to a doubles tiebreak but it was the
Saints who came out on top.
The two teams split the
singles matches with St.
Catherine’s Callie Whitlock,
Charlotte Bemiss and Caroline
Jones taking wins at one, two
and five. Collegiate’s Erin
Anderson, Frankie O’Neill and
Sarah Johnson picked up wins
at three, four and six to send
both squads into doubles competition tied 3-3. It was not a
position that St. Catherine head
coach Richard Peyton favored.
“Our record against Collegiate
hasn’t been great in doubles,”
he said. “I was concerned about
our number two doubles.”
Ironically, it was at number
two doubles where Collegiate
head coach Karin Whitt felt
most confident. “The one spot
we’ve always won is number
two doubles,” she said.
Therefore it only seemed
appropriate that the state
championship came down to
the number two court.
At number one doubles,
the Saint’s Callie Whitlock and
Annie Peyton Leitch made
quick work of the Cougar’s
Connor Brewer and Erin
Anderson 10-6.
Collegiate’s Hannah Carl
and Sarah Johnson re-knotted
the championship with a 104 win over Kristine Scherger
and Terrell Williams at number
three.
Then all eyes towards the
number two court where Saints’
freshmen Bemiss and Jones battled Ellie Whitlock and O’Neill.
The Cougars took an early
match lead only to see Bemiss
and Jones fight back to hold
a 9-7 advantage. But with a
state championship going to the
winner, Whitlock and O’Neill
refused to yield, gritting their
way back to grasp a 10-9 edge
and they appeared to be on
the verge of taking the trophy;
which gave Peyton a feeling of
déjà-vu. “I thought we were just
doomed to never beat them,”
he said.
But backed in a corner, the
Saints freshmen played with a
maturity beyond their age to

Collegiate’s No. 2 doubles team of Ellie Whitlock, left and Frankie O’Neil found themselves in
a battle that would decide the state championship. The pair took an early lead, fell far behind,
came back to even the match and eventually lost in a tie-break to St. Catherine’s 11-10.
knot the match at 10-10 then
win the tiebreak 7-3.
Peyton was beside himself
with pride. “For them to pull
out this win and do it in a dramatic way with the tiebreaker,
it’s pretty impressive for two
freshmen,” he said.
But the coach was also
happy for Callie Whitlock, his
senior star who has not lost an
LIS match in three years. “Really
I’m thrilled for her because she
deserves it,” he said. “Being the
anchor to this team for three
years, she deserves a state championship.”
Even though Collegiate did
not claim a tournament trophy, after a season of adversity,
the Cougars completed a great
accomplishment just reaching
the title match.

girls, all they’ve gone through

Collegiate’s Timmy Albright, right, attempts a header to score his third goal of the VISAA state
championship but Paul VI came out on top 4-2 to cliam their first title.
It was only fitting for the
Collegiate Cougars to face the
Paul VI Panthers in the finals
of the Virginia Independent
Schools Athletic Association
state soccer championship.
Coming into the frigid Friday
night matchup, both teams
had played several games over
the course of a few days. The
Panthers were making their
first appearance in the finals
while their feline named brethren were old pros, making their
second straight championship
appearance. In the end the
Paul VI used their pressure and
athleticism to defeat Collegiate
4-2 for their first state championship.
Ironically, the Cougars, who
were used to applying pressure,
had that philosophy applied
to them to combine with the
loss of senior midfielder Burke
Modisett early in the game.
“That’s a very athletic team,”
said Collegiate head coach
Charlie Blair. “It made for a
long night. Their midfield was
so strong. Burke went down
in the first half. When he went
down it took an option away
from us. They did a better job
in keeping the ball. That just
really gave us fits.”
Early on the two teams went
back and forth in goals scored.
Paul VI freshman midfielder
Oscar Gonzalez scored on a
25-yard shot that appeared to
be an easy stop but bounced
through the hands of Collegiate
goalie Richard Byrd.
Collegiate answered one
minute later at the 30 minute
mark. Senior forward Timmy
Albright (2 goals in the game,
6 goals in two games) received
an assist from sophomore
defender Josh Raine to tie the
game 1-1.

Last minutes heroics fall short for Bulldogs
Monticello captures
20-17 playoff win
BY JIM RIDOLPHI
Special Correspondent
Goochland left it all in the
field in Charlottesville last
Friday night, but came up on
the short end of a 20-17 decision against Monticello in the
opening round of the Group
AA Region II playoffs.
The Mustangs advance in
the playoffs to face Handy this
week in Winchester.
After Goochland jumped
out to a 17-7 first half lead, the
Mustangs played catch-up, but
it was the Bulldogs who almost
came up with the last minute
heroics.
Mustang
quarterback
Jahlil Mosley connected with
Deno Robinson for a 40yard touchdown pass that
drew Monticello within three
points and took the lead when

from May on,” Whitt said.
“(We’re) just fortunate that
they were here today and could
compete to win.
“Some you win, some you
lose,” Whitt said. “You’ve just
got to hold your head up high.
Our motto is; no excuses, no
regrets and hopefully they
didn’t have any.”

Robinson ran a reverse for 39
yards. The conversion failed
and the Mustangs held a three
point lead early in the fourth.
The
ensuing
kickoff bounced around until
Goochland running back
Dustin Plummer picked up on
his own two-yard line.
After converting a key fourth
and less-than-one on their own
10-yard line, Goochland put
together a text book drive that
consumed most of the fourth
quarter, covering 95 yards on
18-plays. But the Bulldogs
came up short when running
back David McKenna lost the
ball at the three-yard line.
McKenna rushed for nearly
1,300 yards this season, and
Goochland coach Joe Fowler
said the fumble was the result
of an extraordinary effort by
his senior. “It was just a case
of him trying to give that extra
effort and giving it 100 percent
trying to make a play,” Fowler
said.
The Mustangs couldn’t run
out the clock and Goochland
got its final chance with a little
over a minute remaining and
the ball on the Monticello 25yard line.
Colby Cooke attempted a 45-yard field goal that
would have tied the game but
Monticello’s Denzel Terry got a
piece of the ball and ended the
Bulldog threat and season.
Mustang coach Brud
Bicknell displayed a sense of
happy relief seasoned with a
healthy dose of respect for the
efforts of his players. “They’ve
proved week in and week out
that they are battlers and warriors, and I’m very proud of
them and it’s a great win for
us,” he said.
Bicknell said he had his
concerns entering the Region
II quarterfinal, especially
after the last minute victory
at Goochland earlier in the
season. “I thought they would
have the psychological edge,”
Bicknell said. “They are a really
good football team that executes well, but we had a plan
and we were able to execute it
to get us over the hump.”
Goochland quarterback

tonight. He’s always dangerous and makes things happen.”
It would be the last goal the
Cougars would score however.
Paul VI added two more
scores on goals by midfielder Alex Gosnell and forward
David Skipper to seal the victory. Before the last goal by
Skipper however, Collegiate
had a chance to tie the game.
But the Cougars’ shot attempt
bounced helplessly off the
crossbar. Skipper scored several minutes later and the
Panthers claimed their first
championship.
“Last year we lost to them
in the state quarterfinals on
their field,” said Paul VI head
coach Matt Leiva. “They have
a great side over there. We just
really tried to work on keeping
the ball moving. I thought
we were just a little sharper

Paul VI kept the pressure
on. Kennedy O’Shea rifled
a shot from long range that
sailed inches over the outstretched arms of a leaping
Byrd to put his team up 2-1.
“It’s nothing you can do
about that unless you are 6-2,”
Blair said. “And he is not [62]. He would like to have the
other one back. But you can’t
fault the keeper on that.”
The back and forth theme
continued. Like clockwork
Albright tied the game 2-2 off
a ricochet goal attempt keeping his team’s championship
hopes alive.
“He’s been special,” Blair
said of his star forward. “The
guys always believe he can get
us a goal. And he got us two

Goochland’s Dustin Plummer, center, made a determined first half run as the Bulldogs jumped
out to a 17-7 lead on host Monticello in the Region II quarterfinal matchup.
Ryan Crouch found Cody
Davis with a 13-yard scoring
strike in the first half. That drive
followed a score by Mckenna
on a one-yard run to open
the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Cooke added a 31-yard field
goal to give Goochland a 17-7
halftime lead.
“We did some things well
today.”
Collegiate made it to the
finals last year as a young team.
They felt this was an ample
opportunity to bring home
the trophy. According to Blair,
they fell short on the scoreboard but not in their intentions and heart.
“These kids came out here
to win,” Blair said. “They didn’t
just come out here to participate. It’s not a lot you can
say to them right now. Last
year we lost, we were young
and inexperienced. This year
we really believed we belonged
here. We wanted to win.”
in the first half, and had some
things go wrong in the second half, but these kids gave it
everything they had tonight,”
Fowler said.
It was obvious this group
had left an indelible mark on
the head coach as he hugged
his players. “It’s a sweet, sweet
group of young men who will
go out and accomplish a whole
lot more than just winning
football games.”

immediately following The

This special holiday
exhibit will showcase about
16 Christmas trees of various heights and colors
all with different themes.
Each tree is decorated with
lights and/or ornaments
specific to the theme. This
exhibit is designed for the
entire family through its
highly visual and colorful displays. This holiday
experience includes traditional and non-traditional Christmas trees while
providing an insightful
view of the true meaning
of Christmas. In addition
the event will have informative displays about the
celebration of Chanukah
and Kwanzaa. These displays will include various
traditional pieces used for
their celebration with color
accents and a brief description of their meaning.
There will be a variety
of themes surrounding
the trees on display. The
“Hope” Tree designed for
Breast Cancer Awareness
will be the first tree visitor see when entering
The Center. Three uplifting poems of hope will be
posted for visitors to read.
With a $5 donation, a
pink ribbon with the
individual’s name will be
added to the Breast Cancer
Tree. All monies donated for this tree will go
to Cancer Foundation for
Breast Cancer Research.
The “Nostalgia” Tree is an
original 1960’s aluminum
tree with a rotating, fourcolor floor light. Memories
of the decades 1940’s,
1950’s and 1960’s will be
brought to life through
authentic
memorabilia
including music, sports,
politics, clothing and toys.
The “Goodwill” Tree
states it all with the name.
The tree, the lights and all
the ornaments were purchased at thrift stores. This
tree will be auctioned off in
a silent auction to the high-
est bidder and all proceeds
go to benefit the Cancer
Foundation for Breast
Cancer Research. Other
trees in the exhibit include
“ To the Tree and Beyond,”
“Two by Two”, “Nightmare

family will be given a pen
and questionnaire with 10
questions relating to the
trees and holiday displays.
The family with the most
correct answer will receive
a prize.
