The Municipal Trails Committee was created by Council, in 2008, to ensure and assist with the development and maintenance of comprehensive trail systems within the Municipality of Kings. Having accomplished this, the Committee is now setting out to implement one of its goals, which is to provide Leadership by:’ providing a forum to improve communication and cooperation among trails interest groups, agencies and other levels of Government involved in trails planning and development.” existence, the Trails Committee has assisted with and funded the development and maintenance of over 80kms of various-use trails within the Municipality. It is a 7.18-acre site located at the northwest corner of Rocknotch and Harmony Roads. The site has a long history of use by local residents and visitors to the area for active and passive recreation. The park property is a narrow site following the Fales River, approximately 2 kilometres upstream from the Village of Greenwood. At the site there is a gorge carved by the river, and the artefact remains of an 18th century water-powered mill. The operation closed at this location 60 years ago, and nature has grown up and over the remains. Today, trail walkers and runners, nature photographers, and climbers use the site. The gorge itself is known to the climbing community as Old Mill’s Crag, but it is also known as Rocknotch Gorge to locals, natural photographers and trail guides. In the past, it has been used for a rappel off a 60-foot 20 | King’s County Recreation Guide - Fall 2012 cliff face and in the 14 Wing Adventure Challenge. On January 18 2011, Kings County Council approved a concept plan for the development of the McMaster Mill Historic Park. The park plan includes parking and pedestrian trails, an outdoor interpretive area, a catwalk down into the gorge, interpretive panels, planting and other landscaping; and an expansion of the trail across the river and to the Canaan Road Trail system in a future stage. Construction of the Park has begun with the trails being completed and work beginning on the boardwalk and viewing platforms in August. Development has been made possible with funding from Kings County Council, NS Department of Health & Wellness-Physical Activity, Sport and Recreation, Villages of Kingston and Greenwood, as well as a strong “in-kind” commitment from the 14 Wing CFSME core engineers. This Phase I is expected to be completed in 2012-13 and will truly be an asset to our parks heritage here in Kings County. For more information about Annapolis Valley in motion visit our website: www.valleyinmotion.ca or like us on Facebook: Valley in motion and follow us on Twitter @Valleyinmotion The rise in childhood obesity and preventable chronic disease is a global issue. In Nova Scotia, one in three children and youth is overweight or obese, and rates of unhealthy eating, sedentary behaviour, and inactivity are much higher. Our rates of chronic disease are among the highest in the country. The causes are complex and deeply rooted in society. They range from socioeconomic factors— such as how much money we make, our level of education and where we live—to our busy, rushed lifestyles, and modern conveniences. Most of us have heard that we need to “eat less and move more” to be healthy. Yet over the last few decades, our social and physical environments have changed in ways that promote the opposite behaviour. The choices we make as individuals are shaped by the choices we have and today, less healthy options outweigh the healthy ones. But we can shift that balance. In 2010, government committed to develop a childhood obesity prevention strategy. Thrive! A plan for a healthier Nova Scotia focuses on healthy eating and physical activity. The plan shifts the emphasis from weight to health and outlines priority actions to create environments that make it easier for Nova Scotians to eat well and be active. These two factors, in addition to helping prevent childhood obesity, are among the most important ways to help all Nova Scotians be happier and healthier today and to reduce the impacts of chronic disease in the future. There are no simple solutions to prevent childhood obesity and chronic disease. It will take all of us—individuals, organizations, governments, and all sectors of society—working together over the long term to create the cultural shift that is needed to improve our collective health. Thrive! lays the foundation to do that. The directions and actions in this plan are based on scientific evidence and expert and public input. They provide a framework for future action that builds on existing success, while setting out realistic and achievable next steps. Annapolis Valley in motion is a movement aimed at increasing physical activity for health, social, economic and environmental benefits. To keep it simple, our purpose is to help people move more! Our vision is that the people of the Annapolis Valley will be the healthiest, most physically active in Canada.
