BOA R D O F D I RECTO RS : FA L L / W I N TE R U P DATE
As we get ready for the snow to start falling, the excitement is in the air for our
brand new Community Swimming Pool! With the help of so many in this amazing Truckee
community, our dream of an indoor pool facility is now a reality. The scheduled opening day is
Sept. 5, so keep your swim trunks on this Fall/Winter to join us in the pool.
We are committed to continue to improve all aspects of the Recreation and Park
District, and we now have a new logo and website. The logo can be seen on the cover page of
the guide, as the three circles represent community, parks & facilities, and programs. With a
simplified and unique look, we hope you will now be able to identify a TDRPD run facility and
program from near and far.
The new website launched in May is continuously being updated and improved with
more info, pictures, videos, and design. We hope you can now use our site to easily find out all
the necessary information about TDRPD, and enjoy browsing our pages.
We are back for another year (34th) of the Truckee Ski Swap on Nov. 5th. Get your
old gear from out of the garage to sell, or join us at the Community Recreation Center on
Saturday to find yourself quality gear at unbeatable prices. Our other annual events this year
include the Halloween Parade, Big Truck Day, and the Art Show in the Community Recreation
Center.
Here at TDRPD, we are going to continue to serve you and our community to provide
quality facilities with a variety of programs for your healthy mountain lifestyle. We hope to
see you this Fall/Winter for a swim, ski, art, sport, lessons and much more here at TruckeeDonner Recreation & Park District.
Cheers,
Kevin C. Murphy

TRUCKEE COMMUNITY THEATER
Bridge To TerabithiaAges 9-17
A play based on the Newberry Award winning novel
Produced by TCT JR
This is not a musical. Rather, it is a dramatic play developed from Katherine
Paterson’s beloved story of two misfit kids who become best friends and create a
rich fantasy kingdom in the woods beyond their homes. The first act is very funny and entertaining, with a great script and fully developed characters that local
young actors will love to play. The second act takes a disturbing turn with the
death of one of the two main characters, but ends in a moving, uplifting manner that is very beautiful. Lots of amazing roles for good actors to tackle in this
memorable play. For information on particular roles available, a synopsis of the
plot, and other details, visit the Truckee Community Theater website at
www.truckeecommunitytheater.com.

The Odd CoupleAges 20+
Divorced sportswriter Oscar Madison has a group of pals over for poker one evening. His uptight and
meticulous friend, Felix Unger, bursts hysterically upon the scene, devastated because his wife has
thrown him out. Oscar, a confirmed slob, graciously offers to let Felix take a room in his apartment,
and the stage is set for hilarious interplay as the two old buddies strain their friendship unconsciously repeating the same mistakes they made in their marriages. This show, Neil Simon’s most popular
comedy, took Broadway by storm when it opened and won many awards.

Monty Python Spamalot Jr.Ages 11-18
Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, “Spamalot” retells

and greet” autograph session with the cast, photos on the set onstage after the show, and a “talk back” where the
audience may ask the kids questions about their roles, rehearsals, etc. For descriptions of roles available, audition
lines and tips, and a synopsis of the show, visit the TCT website at www.truckeecommunitytheater.com

9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Truckee Community Arts Center
Ages 9 through 12
Kate Ruttenburg, a TCT actress and director with a degree in drama,
is looking forward to working with young actors this fall to help prepare them for auditioning and acting in
TCT’s fall and spring “Jr” shows. In the morning, kids will experience lots of fun improvs and acting exercises,
stage movement, vocal work, learn basic stage directions, and have fun working on a character in a play. After
lunch, they will get to rehearse some short scenes with others, and learn about how to audition for a TCT
play or musical. Participants will leave with a sample CD of audition songs for kids and a set of monologues
appropriate for their age group. This class will be excellent preparation for younger actors interested in trying
out for “The Lion King Experience” this fall and “Bridge to Teribithia” in the winter of 2017.

September 24th, “Tech Theater Workshop”
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Truckee Community Arts Center
Ages 12 through adult
Led by TCT’s resident lighting designer Danny Sturtevant, this exciting workshop will be extremely valuable for all
teens and adults interested in designing and/or running lights or sound for a TCT production. Light board, spot
light, and sound board operators earn a stipend for working on a show, and this class will prepare participants to
do a terrific job. Morning topics are centered on stage lighting, including light design, special effects, gobos, and
lighting a cyclorama to enhance a production. You will create a simple lighting design and learn how to operate
the light board and follow spot. After lunch, the focus is sound. You will learn how to create a playlist in iTunes
and find sound effects, have an introduction to types of microphones commonly used, and receive instruction in
running TCT’s sound board.

TCT Theater Seminars (cont.)
October 1st, “Teen and Adult Acting Workshop”
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Truckee Community Arts Center
Ages 12 through adult
This will be a wonderful class for both beginners and experienced actors. TCT director Michele Jones, who has a
B.A. in theater arts with an emphasis in directing, will lead participants in the morning through introductory acting
exercises and improvisations, instruction in how to analyze and build a character for the stage, how to block a scene
using levels, props, and appropriate stage dynamics, vocal projection, and teamwork with other actors. After lunch,
class members will work on a scene, and present it to others at the end of the class.

October 8th, “Stage Combat”
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Truckee Community Arts Center
Ages 15 through adult
TCT is proud to offer a chance to experience the thrill of staging and performing in theatrical
combat scenes. Instructor Michele Jones has a special college degree in this field, and brings years
of experience to the workshop to share with our lucky participants. The morning will be devoted to an
introduction to stage combat, including safety and partner work. Participants will then experience
hand to hand combat, seen in shows like “West Side Story”, and quarter staff combat (fighting with a
long pole) seen in shows like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. After lunch, class members will be given
instruction on staging a swordfight, as in “Romeo and Juliet”, and fighting with a rapier, dagger, and
broadsword. They will stage a short fight with a partner and perform it at the end of class. Don’t miss
this amazing workshop!

Production Fee to TCT: $10 paid at class
October 29th, “Stage Makeup”
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Truckee Community Arts Center
Ages 12 through adult
Just in time for Halloween! Theatrical makeup expert Janis Lokke of Theater Works of Northern
Nevada will teach you how to enhance or completely change your appearance to fit the demands of a
role. Morning session will include basic “corrective” makeup, which is commonly used in most plays and
musicals to make an actor or actress look attractive and natural under stage lights, and instruction in
old age makeup, used to create the illusion of age in a younger actor. Following lunch, participants will
enjoy creating fantasy makeup used frequently in stage shows like “Cats”, “The Lion King”, and many of
Shakespeare’s plays. Class members may bring their own makeup. (We suggest a Kyrolan “Aquacolor
Palette” for fantasy makeup, and a Ben Nye “Personal Makeup Kit”, both available online). Or, if preferred,
you may use the TCT makeup supplies available at the workshop.
