KAHRS Engineered Wood Flooring Magazine
GB 10 A smarter greener floor The choice is yours A true home can only be created by the people who live in it. It must be filled with personality, warmth and love in order to become a place where you really feel at home. A cosy, rosy cottage may be your dream home. Or you may prefer a style that is more cutting edge. As the saying goes “A house is made of walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams.” A great way to find inspiration is to browse through interior magazines and catalogues to find ideas and see how others have created their dream home. That is one of the reasons why we’ve put together this Kährs Magazine. Another is to show the versatility of our range of wood floors; how they contribute to the character of any interior style and add natural warmth to every home. Our hope is that it will provide you with ideas and images, so that you can create a home that is truly yours. Make your own ‘mood-board’ by cutting out the images that appeal to you. Then visit www.kahrs.com and use our interactive web tools to try out different design ideas. The KÄHRS Virtual Showroom helps you visualize how your favourite wood floors, combined with walls and furniture in different styles and shades, can transform any room. A dark wood floor with a dramatic wallpaper and baroque furniture? Or white on white? Our intention, with these tools, is to help you create a home that will be everything you have ever dreamed of – and which will last a lifetime. Wood floors make great eco sense Wood is a very environmentally-friendly material. And choosing a wood floor, from Kährs, is a smart green choice. Kährs is one of the oldest manufacturers of wood flooring. It is also one of the most innovative. Many of our innovations derive from our ambition to contribute to a better environment, like the launch of the multi-layer wood floor in 1941. Our ecological approach All man-made products affect the environment. To counteract these effects, we have adopted an ecological approach that permeates everything we do. The wood we use is almost entirely sourced from Scandinavia and Europe, where new growth exceeds that which is harvested. And, in 1984, Kährs was the first manufacturer to boast an entirely solvent-free surface treatment process. Sourcing locally More than 88% of the raw material we use grows less than 180 miles from our factory. No glue Nearly all of our floors are designed with an integral glueless Woodloc® locking joint, which ensures tight joins without the use of glue, and eliminates gapping. Our multi-layer construction allows us to take full advantage of each log, using fewer resources than in solid floor production. This, and other initiatives, earned Kährs ISO14001 environmental management certification nearly a decade ago. It’s this level of dedication that allows us to create and produce floors that are not only beautiful but also contribute to the well-being of generations to come. We call it Beauty with a Conscience. Nothing but wood Kährs only makes wood floors – and wood is the only renewable flooring material (i.e. a raw material that can be replaced within years). Solvent-free We constantly strive to find the most environmentallyfriendly stains and lacquers. And our surfaces are easy to clean and maintain without the use of strong chemicals. A better environment Today, there are Kährs floors in a wide range of wood species and styles. But regardless of looks, they each fulfil ALL of the demands you should make if you want your new floor to contribute to a better environment. Responsible production Growing forests Wood from Swedish forests has been used by ourselves, and by other manufacturers, for more than 150 years – yet the forests in Sweden have increased in size steadily over the past 100 years. Kährs floors are manufactured in an environmentally responsible way and we strive to reduce environmental impact in all areas of our production. Read more about our environmental work at www.kahrs.com 4 5 Tropical species We support sustainable forestry Countries in the tropical zone should be given the opportunity to carry out sustainable forestry of tropical wood species, in order to develop their countries and economies. So, we’ll reassess our decision if, and when, full guarantees of origin can be presented. We will also continue to pursue this issue, in co-operation with forestry and environmental organisations. Eco-friendly alternatives Sustainable and responsible forestry forms the basis of our operations. We want to be able to guarantee, with a 100% certainty, that the wood species used in our production originate from genuinely legal sources. We have stopped importing tropical wood species. During 2010, we will sell-out our present stock and, once this is depleted, will discontinue the sale of all tropical products. Should processes and documentation become available, that offers guarantees that rainforest timber is derived from controlled sources, we will reconsider this position. However, in the meantime, we have a range of stained floors that create the same visual effect as a tropical wood floor. Examples of stained floors Rainforests under threat Rainforests around the world are seriously threatened by largescale felling, some of which is illegal. It is very difficult to guarantee the origin of tropical wood and to be certain that it has been legally felled. Find out more at www.kahrs.com 6 7 Woodloc® 5S — The new super joint for faster installation and a stronger floor Kährs was the first wood floor manufacturer to introduce a mechanical glueless joint system. In 1999, we launched the ingenious Woodloc® system, which revolutionized the wood flooring market. The Woodloc® joint system allowed boards, for the first time, to be mechanically locked together, without using glue. In addition to promoting a perfect installation and eliminating gapping, it also made laying quick and simple. As the installation is glueless, boards can be lifted, at any time, and moved elsewhere. A perfect fit is also important in terms of durability. And, not least, a perfect fit – without gaps – prevents dirt and grime from becoming trapped between the boards, making maintenance a lot easier. Now, we’re introducing the next generation Woodloc® joint system – Woodloc® 5s. The new joint makes installation even faster, while producing an even stronger floor. 8 Faster, stronger, more stable Faster – the short ends of the boards are connected vertically, instead of at an angle, which makes installation faster. Stronger – Woodloc® is already the strongest mechanical joint system on the market – and Woodloc® 5s is around 25% stronger. This means that a larger single area of flooring can be installed, without mouldings. More stable – Kährs with Woodloc® 5s is just as easy to install as a glued down or floating floor. Kährs – inventor of the modern wood floor Woodloc® is just one example of the innovative spirit for which Kährs is renowned, and has been ever since the start, more than 150 years ago. With the launch of the multi-layer wood floor in 1941, Kährs introduced a floor that was not only more stable and environmentally-friendly, but which also set a new industry standard. Our other innovations include the replacement of synthetic-based stains with water-based products. Wood is a natural material and as a result is affected by humidity changes throughout the year, i.e. it swells in high humidity and shrinks in low humidity. This can create a huge amount of stress on the joints. The Woodloc® joint has proved superior to traditional joints, when it comes to withstanding this type of stress. 9 Kährs range of wood floors Flooring is one of the most important elements used in creating a specific look for the home. To cater for all tastes and lifestyles, we offer a multitude of different designs and finishes, in a wide range of species. And, as there are also different needs in different parts of the home, we offer two different ranges – Kährs Original and Kährs Linnea. Kährs linnea Kährs Original SETTING THE STANDARD IN WOOD FLOORING Our widest range – Kährs Original – is renowned for its high quality and versatility. With even more options now available, it spans light to dark species, with durable matt, silk matt and nature oil surface treatments, as well as a variety of stunning designer finishes. The range features 1, 2 and 3 strip designs and, in addition to enhancing stability, its eco-friendly construction allows the floor to be sanded at least twice during its lifetime. For details of the entire Kährs Original range, please refer to page 80. 10 THE NEW GENERATION HARDWOOD FLOOR Technical Data Kährs Original Board thickness: 15 mm Surface layer thickness: 3.6 mm Core material: Pine/spruce Resandable: 2–3 times Guarantee: 30 years Kährs Linnea, introduced in 1993, was the world’s first hardwood floor to be offered with a glueless mechanical joint system. Pleasing to the eye and to the touch, Linnea combines the aesthetic with the practical. The floor is durable, fast and simple to install and easy to maintain. Thinner than the floors in Kährs Original range, Linnea is ideal for areas where a thicker floor would be difficult to install. The range includes numerous new designs, including on-trend stained options with brushed and bevelled finishes. This is true of a Kährs floor, where the highest level of skill is used to craft every single detail, including the skirtings, mouldings and other floor accessories. The finishing touch Skirting boards add the finishing touch; not only to the floor but to the whole room. We offer a variety of skirting boards to match the floors in Kährs range. A minimal solution A narrow and flexible quadrant is the ideal choice when you have skirting boards that you can’t remove, or if full sized skirting boards are impossible to use. Quadrants offer quick and easy finishing against existing boards. Nothing beats a neat finish A staircase with a wood floor creates a very elegant look. To create the perfect finish on each step, use a stairnose. Kahrs offers two different types, depending on the floor you are laying: a Woodloc® stairnose and a tongue & groove stairnose. When carpet meets wood For a neat transition between a wood floor and a carpet there are two options. You can either use edge mouldings or level mouldings, depending on the height of the carpet. Whatever the solution, you can be certain that the result will look good. True marriage between stone and wood Natural materials, like stone and wood, work really well together. To create a perfect marriage between the two finishes, you can choose from two different details, depending on the height of the stone floor – an edge moulding or a level moulding. Big ideas for tiny spaces Sometimes even a quadrant is too big to use to cover the gap between the floor and the wall, or window. If this is the case, the best solution is to use an edge moulding for a smart finish. If you want a smooth surface, choose a floor with a silk matt finish. For a more tactile surface, choose a brushed floor. As well as feeling totally different to walk on, different surface treatments will reflect light differently. Interior design is all about feel. It’s the combination of materials, colour, furniture and accessories that, together, create an atmosphere. Flooring plays an important role in shaping the individual character. It’s where most interior design projects start. From the ground, up. Read more about surfaces and treatments on page 77. Or, visit your local stockist and feel for yourself! YOUR FLOOR IS YOUR FOUNDATION A floor is so much more than just something to walk on. It plays an essential part in creating the overall look and feel. When designing a room, you should first consider the floor. The floor is your foundation; you can repaint walls and ceilings, but the floor is more permanent. And, it’s used every day. The appearance of a wood floor, i.e. the colour, surface, texture, pattern and hardness will vary depending on the species chosen – from light, calm Maple, through Beech and Oak, to dark and vibrant Walnut and Jarrah. Find out as much as you can about different species and their characteristics (page 79). Your floor will set the mood. WHICH DIRECTION TO TAKE The direction in which a floor is installed can greatly influence the overall look. In most cases, floors tend to be installed lengthways, but the shape and dimensions of a room can have a bearing on this. If your room is large and square, with windows and natural light coming from just one direction, we recommend that you install the floor in the direction of the main light source. This will allow daylight to flow along the grain of the floor and will reduce the appearance of joints on the floor’s surface. See the different effects at our virtual showroom at www.kahrs.com A LIGHT OR DARK FLOOR? Natural light and light sources, windows and orientation are some of the factors to consider when choosing the colour of your floor. A dark floor tends to ‘swallow’ light and affects the feeling of space. But a dark floor can also create a warm and comfortable feel in a large room. A light coloured rug on a dark floor can unite a room with its pale toned walls. Meanwhile, a light wood floor reflects the light, increases the feeling of space and can also create a dramatic contrast to dark design details. Polished and shiny floors reflect sunlight and redistribute it more than matt lacquered or natural oiled surfaces. See the different effects at our virtual showroom at www.kahrs.com CHOOSE A FLOOR THAT REFLECTS YOUR STYLE The character of the wood will influence the overall impression of the floor. Graining, figuring and colour variations give a lively look, while a calm impression is achieved with an evenly toned floor. Try different styles in our virtual showroom www.kahrs.com 56 BE BOLD IN BIG ROOMS If your room is large, a 1- or 2-strip floor will work well. The surface will create an open, airy feel. You can also use the timber’s grading (City, Town or Country) to influence the look of the room, to create either a calm or lively feel. Floors also interact with a room’s overall shape – with the light, the materials on the walls and ceilings, and their appearance. The style of furniture you choose for the room will also influence the overall look and feel. Big, bold patterns also work really well in big rooms – make a big style statement! This emphasizes the natural feeling and shows the character of the wood species to full effect. The boards are made up from one to three pieces. This gives the floor a natural variation and character. The wear layer is two strips’ wide. The strips are individually selected and arranged on the plank to give each floor a unique, individual character. 3 3-strip design Patterned Ship’s deck The wear layer is three strips’ wide. The strips are individually selected and vary in length. They are randomly positioned to create a unique floor design. A classically designed floor that benefits from a modern construction. The surface layer features a repeating box pattern made up of three vertical strips, laid side by side, divided by one horizontal strip across the top. When the boards have been installed, they create a stunning ‘cable stitch’ pattern. A floor with a maritime feel, it has a decorative strip edge, and wood plugs at the end of each board, to give a real Ship’s Deck look. The strip and plugs form part of each 1-strip board and the floor is installed in exactly the same way as our other wood floors. Silk Matt Matt NATURE OIL Our silk matt lacquer complements the wood’s character by accentuating its natural structure. It also makes the floor more hardwearing and easier to clean. At the same time, the lacquer is one of the thinnest available, so it doesn’t conceal the wood’s natural lustre. Our matt lacquer creates the impression that the floor is made from untreated bare wood, or has a natural oil prefinish. The soft-to-touch natural surface is incredibly tactile and pleasing underfoot. Matt lacquer is as hardwearing and easy to maintain as silk matt lacquer. Kährs Nature oil gives your floor a wonderfully natural and beautiful feel. The oil brings out the wood’s texture and graining, and enhances its tone. Whilst easy to maintain, remember that floors treated with Nature oil need a little more care and should be treated with Kährs Oil Refresher regularly. Surface Treatment Gradings City Selection Town Selection Country Selection Classic Selection Brushed Stained Bevelled edges These floors are stylishly understated; they are created from a uniform and regular timber grade with small variations in grain and tone. They can be light or dark, depending on the wood species, but the tone and overall effect is uniform. If you like a calm, minimalistic impression, look for a floor in the City Selection. Dark or light, these floors are characterized by subtle variations in tone and pattern, without knots. They form a classic backdrop, allowing the rest of the decoration to take ‘centre stage’. If you’re looking for a floor with minimal variations, take a look at our Town Selection. If you’re looking for a more rustic floor, you’ll probably like our Country Selection. Here, you’ll find dramatic graining, gnarls and knots, with greater colour variation, for a bold and unmistakably natural look. Our Classic floors offer a little more refinement and allow you to introduce added character to your room. Classic floors have been treated and refined using unique wood processing methods, sometimes combined with a glaze or coloured stain. Brushing the surface highlights the natural structure of the grain and creates additional texture. Brushing is usually accompanied by other surface treatments, such as a bevelled finish and a coloured stain or glaze. Stains can be used to further enhance natural colour tones – from palest white and whisper greys, to rich mocha and charcoal shades. Bevelling the edges of a 1-strip floor board accentuates its plank shape. From a micro-bevel (a slight accentuation of the edge using sandpaper) to a more dramatic, stronger bevel on all edges, this design feature gives the floor a more rustic and distinct look. 76 77 Kährs performance and accessories Wood facts Unexposed Softer Kährs – Sands like a solid Kährs Original multi-layer construction uses hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing timber below. It can be refurbished in exactly the same way as a solid floor, as sanding of any wood floor is only possible down to the joint. However, Kährs construction has additional eco benefits - and its 75% more stable too! Find out more at www.kahrs.com The strongest surface that won’t discolour The surface of the floor is, visually, the most important part. As a result, all Kährs surface treatments are strong enough to withstand even the toughest daily wear and tear, yet thin enough so as not to disguise the wood’s lustre. And, unlike some finishes, Kährs surface treatments won’t yellow over time. Kährs Guarantee Kährs has been manufacturing quality multi-layered wood floors for more than 60 years. We’re proud of our products and of their environmental and performance benefits. Combined with a complete care and maintenance programme, this allows Kährs to offer a guarantee of 30 years on its Original range and 12 years on its Linnea range. Find out more at www.kahrs.com Find out more at www.kahrs.com The best climate stability Since wood is a natural material, that is affected by climatic changes, a wood floor moves with the seasons, i.e. it swells in high humidity and shrinks in low humidity. Kährs multi-layered construction minimizes this movement. It provides the correct balance between the layers – top, core and back – and ensures the floor remains stable in all conditions.
