Where there is no vision, the people perish Proverbs 29:18 I began coaching Jr. High softball this past month. As we began our first games I ask the girls what are our goals. What vision do we have for the season? What do we want our outcome to be? They looked at me with blank stares. They had no clue. For some it seemed as if they didn’t care because, what difference would it make? As we talked we discovered the value in setting goals and having a visualization. Our goals and vision help create a focus. They help us seek direction, and they move us forward with hopefully great results. When we see the mental picture, and set the goals to accomplish them we join together as a team, working as one and in the end see the reward. If I were to ask you “What is the vision of this church in the coming year or over the next 5 years?” what would you tell me? Do you know? Do we really have a focus? Some might say it is to Glorify, Grow and Go. This is a good answer, but what does it mean? Do we need something more specific and tangible? Do we just simply want to continue to exist or do we as First Reformed really want to impact our world? Do we desire to serve God and do God’s kingdom work in a way that truly is making a difference? I’m not saying that good things haven’t happened but what if it could be better. What if we discovered that making a major impact for Christ was even more refreshing and fulfilling. This month we will be introducing something new to First Reformed Church. Since our consistory retreat we have begun to talk about a vision for First Reformed for the next 5 to 10 years. This vision will be challenging and yet attainable. This vision will require some goals to be set but very makeable. This new vision will stretch us, challenge us, and push us to think differently. The consistory and myself are excited about this possible new vision. But we want to make sure our vision is what God’s vision for this church is to be. Ultimately, it is about seeking God’s plan for First Reformed and not our plan. We want to be lead and guided by the Holy Spirit. We want to be confident that if this is God’s call for us, then knowing God is with us will enable us to accomplish the vision set forth. We need you as a congregation to be active and supportive of this vision. It will mean change for all of us. Continued Next Page So what is the vision? As of now I am not telling you. After discussion with the consistory we are planning a meeting for June 21 in which we will lay everything out. Part of this new vision is that we are walking along side what God wants. Thus, on June 21 we are going to share more details to this vision but also spend the next 40 days in prayer and discernment. We will want you to be involved. Beginning on June 21 we will have a specific outline for the next 40 days in which you can pray for specific things. During that 40 days, we will have a least one 24 hour prayer vigil here at the church. During the 40 days we will have at least one day of fasting for anyone capable. The ministry teams will be involved and each Sunday we will take some time during our worship to lift up our prayers for discernment. I ask that you already begin to open your mind and heart to what God might do with this church. We have amazing potential. We have the ability to grow ourselves in Jesus, grow people within our community and grow people throughout the world. It begins with a vision. God’s vision, laid out for us as a church moving forward. My goal, and I would hope yours, is that this church flourish and grow knowing the vision and direction God lays out. Looking forward! News from Sayuri and Abraham Dear Friends and Supporters, This past April was a very eventful month in our ministry. It began with us worshipping at a house church in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam at which members take surreptitious routes to worship to keep the police from closing down their congregation. The experience gave us a deep appreciation of the various battles faced by others in our mutual endeavor to bring the Gospel to Asia. Easter, which often falls in April, is a season of New Life. In Japan the month of April itself is a time of new beginnings – it is the beginning of the school year and the beginning of the fiscal year for many businesses and corporations. This month we have undertaken beginning a new ministry at Kugahara Church in Tokyo. It is an evening worship service that utilizes the youth of the congregation for the enrichment of the whole congregation and outreach to the neighborhood. The exciting thing we have already seen is the involvement of young seekers who felt unable to join in morning worship now engaged in this new service that features contemporary music. They join us in making a joyful noise together. One unexpected opportunity for evangelism also came about when Asahi Television approached Abraham to be one of six Christian clergy to be a part of discussion with Buddhist priests about our two faiths which will be broadcast nationally on prime time television. Given that less than one percent of Japanese are Christian, this broadcast is certainly a wonderful opportunity for viewers to get a better understanding of the faith that we have in Jesus Christ. At this point, we have no idea how the final edited version of the production will be. We do ask for your prayers that the millions of viewers who will watch will be led by the spirit to have their interest aroused in getting to know more about our faith. We pray that God is blessing your congregations in their ministry and ask that you pray that God will continue to bring new life to the ministries of the congregations in Japan to which we have been sent. Yours in Christ, Abraham and Sayuri Sayuri's ministry Sayuri Kist-Okazaki is an ordained RCA pastor who works in evangelistic training for congregations of the United Church of Christ in Japan. She specializes in teaching churches how to incorporate contemporary music and "seeker-friendly" elements into their worship so churches can more effectively reach non-Christians, who make up 99 percent of Japan's population. Sportsmen's Devotional Bible Study Verses Matthew 16:2-3 He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. (NIV) Thoughts At some time in your life, you may have heard a wise sailor recite this very old saying, "Red sky at morning, sailor take warning; red sky at night, sailor's delight." Well, you now know where it came from? I used to think those very wise sailors learned it from years on the high seas. I'm sure many of them have. If you had to guess how long that saying has been around, you would have to go back before the time of Jesus. When Jesus was confronted by the Jewish leaders wanting a sign from Him, He used it to confront their hypocritical way of life. He simply showed them that they could look at the sky and know how the weather was going to unfold that morning or evening. But, they could not understand the significant events that were unfolding right before their eyes. Action Point I think today it is so easy for people to get caught up in what the media and others believe and think about what is happening in our world, and yet, fail to evaluate for themselves what is really taking place. Jesus wanted people to stop and examine the circumstances in which they found themselves and see the truth - that He was truly the Messiah and the fulfillment of scripture. Our world is not on a road leading in the right direction. Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it, (NIV). The narrow road with the small gate is Jesus. It is only through Him that one can be saved from his sins and receive eternal life. Sportsmen's Tip of the Day It is always important to check area and national weather reports before starting out on any trip. If you have an idea as to how the weather might unfold, you will know how to better prepare. Then, prepare for the unexpected. Last. but not least, read the sky. I cannot tell you how truly accurate that old saying is.
