(Janesville, WI) – The Diversity Action Team (DAT) of Rock County will host the annual Martin
Luther King Jr. Commemoration, January 16, 2016, at Blackhawk Technical College from
3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event honors Dr. King and features student performances, awards and
cultural sharing.
Nominations for the YWCA Racial Justice Award are being accepted at the YWCA, 1735 S.
Washington Street, Janesville, or through its website, www.ywcarockcountry.com. Individuals,
area clubs, and groups with noteworthy efforts in promoting civil rights and peace are eligible for
the award. Nominations are open through December 18, 2015.

in Pella, Iowa. Richard graduated from Central College in Iowa in 1966
with a degree in sociology and a teaching credential. He then signed a
teaching contract with the School District of Beloit. He eventually
earned a Master’s degree in Education from Southern Oregon
University in Portland, Oregon, in 1974. Richard served as a teacher
and principal with the Beloit Public Schools from 1966 until his retirement in 2002.
?Richard McGregory was united in marriage with Helen Brinker in
1968; out of this union came sons, Richard Jr, and Gerald (Jay). He subsequently remarried in 1980 to Judy Jewell. This union produced his
beloved daughter Nicole. McGregory accepted Christ at an early age
and was a proud member of Wesley C.M.E. Church, serving as a member and chairperson of the Board of Stewards as well as the lay leader
for the Milwaukee District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal church.
Richard utilized his expertise to be of service to the larger community.
He believed that people who were blessed to be in positions of power
had a responsibility to uplift others. He took particular pride in the fact

Services for ‘McCraley’ Sharp
Beloit, WI - Our Heavenly Father called Barbara Jean McCraley
Sharp age 72, home to be with the
Lord on Friday, January 21, 2011 in
BeloitMemorialHospital after a
long illness. Barbara McCraley
Sharp was born December 18, 1938
in Beloit, Wisconsin to the late
George and Lizzie (Owens)
McCraley. She received her formal
education through the BeloitSchool
District, and attended the University
of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Barbara
married the late Frank Sharp
December 13,1969 in Beloit
Wisconsin.
Barbara had a passion of working Barbara Jean McCraley Sharp
with children. She was a teacher for the Head Start Program for many
years, worked for Girl Scouts of American, and started the Double
Dutch program. In 1991, she continued her passion of working with
children and fulfilling the needs of students working for the School
District of Beloit, retiring in 2002. After retirement Barbara worked for
the Beloit Downtown Association until becoming ill.
Barbara was a faithful member of NewCovenantChurch, serving on
the Usher Board, Senior Choir, Sunday School Superintendant,
Historian and a member of the Executive Board. She was one of the
founding Board Members of The Beloit Area Community Health Care
Center. She Also, served as president of the Merrill Revitalization
Committee, Juneteenth Parade Chairperson, and many community
needs projects.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory two daughters; Cheryl (TC)
Tennial of Norfolk, Virginia and Carrie Webster, Beloit, Wisconsin One
son Marcus Harrell, Rockford, Illinois. Four grandson; Marques
Tennial, Joseph Tennial of Norfolk,
2017 United Way Blackhawk Region
Community Grant Eligibility Window
Open for New Programs
JANESVILLE – United Way Blackhawk Region’s 2017 Community
Grant eligibility window is now open, as of January 1, 2016, for new
programs seeking funding. Eligibility forms should be completed online
before March 1, 2016. Applications from existing Partners for calendar
year 2017 will not begin until June.
Nonprofit organizations seeking consideration of their programs for
United Way’s competitive community grant should meet the community’s health and human service needs; address specific community needs;
align with United Way’s mission and impact areas of education, income,
and health; provide program services in Rock County, Wis., and

Northern Winnebago County,
Ill.; have the ability to provide measurable outcomes; demonstrate a need for United Way funds; and be fiscally responsible and efficient in administration and operation while avoiding duplication of services.
Interested organizations seeking grant consideration for programs not
currently funded by United Way Blackhawk Region should complete
