events. Interspersed throughout the park are a number of dead cedars that have been

This large municipal park hosts several athletic
fields for public and school use. A large
jogging and biking trail forms the perimeter
of the park, which also encircles a small pond
and habitat for local plants and wildlife.

In the interest of environmental conservation
and sustainable practices, the University of
Montevallo has preserved 80 acres of the
South’s most endangered wetland, the upland
hardwood swamp. With a boardwalk that
extends 760 feet into the swamp, visitors
are allowed the rare opportunity to observe
a number of indigenous plants and wildlife,
without disturbing the pristine nature of their
natural habitat. Also on site are 3 “recycled
art” sculptures depicting swamp animals,
crafted from salvaged metals by UM students.

Shoal Creek Canoe Trail
An excellent put-in point for canoes, kayaks,
or tubes, this one-mile river trail will carry you
through the wilds of Montevallo all the way to
Orr Park. Shoal Creek Canoe Trail is a great
way to spend a few hours on a lovely day.
James Wylie Shepherd Observatory

which turns into Co. Road 10. Turn right onto Co.

right onto Pebble Road; JWSO will be at the end
of the road, past the gate. Site is open for public

Built on the site of the former University of
Montevallo landfill, the JWSO now serves as
a model for sustainable design and superior
astronomical viewing in the state of Alabama.
Soon to be powered by eight solar panels
and a water system which converts rainwater
into purified, drinkable water, this world-class
facility is also one of only two observatories
in the entire country known to be completely
accessible to disabled persons. With
completely organic landscaping designed by
Petals from the Past farms, the JWSO site also
proudly preserves over 150 acres of pristine,
untouched Pea Ridge wilderness.

UM Organic Community Garden
The garden is located at County Road 10/Middle Street, just past the University of Montevallo
baseball field.
Designed and constructed by the UM Environmental Club, this completely organic garden is a
vital resource for our community, and provides an ample amount of plots designated for both
personal and communal use. Under the care and coordination of Master Gardener Holly Pless,
over 300 pounds of organically grown produce have been donated to needy families within
Montevallo through local nonprofit Shelby Emergency Assistance, with much more to come!
Community members can rent a plot for $10 per season, and $5 per season for students. For

For over 7 years, a number of members of the Montevallo community have devoted their
time and energy to the continued development, expansion, and maintenance of this 2.5 mile
greenway connecting 2 of our town’s most beautiful parks. Winding through the heart of
downtown and alongside scenic Shoal Creek all the way to College Lake and beyond, this trail
also preserves the natural habitat of several different species of local wildlife. Of note, at the
University Lake, the Parks Trail connects with a 2/3 mile looped exercise trail, which includes 10
separate outdoor fitness stations for users.

of SEA have provided a vital resource to
the residents of Shelby County. In addition

assistance to individuals and families in
crisis, SEA also offers educational classes on

Unbeknownst to many, the forced enslavement
of African-Americans in the South existed
well into the 20th century, and is made
most apparent in the context of the former
practices and history of Alabama’s coal
industry. In a system of “slavery by another
name,” thousands of African-Americans were
convicted of crimes as ridiculous as public
unemployment, sold to mining companies,
and worked forcibly until death. For a crash
course in this and many other forgotten
truths, come visit Alabama’s only monument
dedicated to coal miners everywhere!
