CHAMBER CHATTER December 2015 | Vol. 13, No. 12 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NEWS December 2015 In early October of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln faced a nation torn with the strife of war. A union of the states was in peril, and a young nation struggled with its preservation. Yet in the midst of all that was tearing a country apart, Lincoln wrote a proclamation that would set aside a national day of Thanksgiving; the last Thursday of November. Lincoln wrote: “with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.” As in Lincoln’s time, both our nation and nations around the globe face threats that tear at the fabric of our souls. These threats have many faces and many fathers. They seek to divide us. Being an American citizen is a blessing; a blessing of citizenship that is granted to many of us at birth and to others that come here seeking a better life. Many come here seeking freedom to worship, to flee political persecution, or to escape poverty and hunger. American Written by Steve Gilbert, Executive Director citizenship is not easy, nor should it be easily obtained. It carries the weight of freedom; a weight that bears the responsibility to understand that we all have rights. It is the freedom to shout what we believe as loud as the guy next to us is shouting out in opposition. Think about that the next time you disagree with someone’s beliefs or politics. We live in a world where it is easy to be offended by things we hear, read, and see in the media. It is easy to get caught up in the trappings of fiery rhetoric from the press or those seeking to further a personal cause. Just remember, before speaking, that we live where that right is protected and many have sacrificed to see that it is preserved for all to enjoy. For these things and many others too numerous to list, I am thankful this holiday season. I hope you will take a moment to reflect on those things that are meaningful in your life. Remember, not everyone shares your views and beliefs, or respects the symbols that represent them. The spirit of this season is not in symbols or in books of law; it is freely given from a thankful and humble heart. CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWS Mayor’s Message... Celebrating our Diverse Community through this Holiday Season While it may seem insignificant to many, composing this mayor’s message each month is extremely difficult for me. I deliberate for literally days trying to come up with a message that will resonate with the majority, inspire those who are open-minded, try not to offend those who may see the world differently than me and speak not as an individual, but as an elected community leader. This month is no exception. Although this message will be disseminated in December, I’m composing it in November, just days after the horrific attack in Paris which is now equated in French history with the 9/11 attacks in the US. The solidarity that the US has shown with France in the aftermath has been uplifting and not a bit surprising. As Americans, we rush to the aid of those who are in crisis, embracing our neighbors around the world. It’s what we do because we recognize the American fabric is an interwoven conglomeration. We are a country of immigrants, underscoring the importance of supporting both France and citizens of countries in crisis, such as Syria. Our brothers and sisters are Christians, Muslims, Jews, Agnostics, Atheists, black, white, lovely shades of brown, straight, gay, transgender, educated and uneducated. This statement is founded at the federal level through the newly defined marriage laws and our ongoing commitment to accept refugees escaping unimaginable situations. In Montevallo, our little unconventional oasis, I’m extremely proud of the inclusiveness I witness daily. Last month, an individual with a significant physical disability approached me with a proposal to host a refugee family locally; emphasizing how much support he had gotten over the years from our community, HIS community, and desiring to return the favor. A colleague and friend of mine who was a refugee himself is now a prominent professor, educating students at a level commensurate with an Ivy League education. We have support groups for a host of populations whom I’ve recognized in previous messages, many led by our faith-based community. So, in this season of peace, love and charity, please take time to pause and reflect upon your own heritage and blessings. Commit to add fuel to our community flame of inclusion, acceptance and grace and douse the fires of fear, hatred and isolationism. Peace and love, Hollie C. Cost, Mayor 845 Valley Street • Montevallo, Alabama 35115 • [email protected] • www.montevallocc.com • 205-665-1519 WELCOME TO MONTEVALLO! Students came from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and as far away as Montana to learn from Amos. Richard Amos was born in England in 1963 and began karate at age 10. Occasionally teaching from as young as 15 he was invited onto the KUGB Junior Karate Team at 18. By the age of 23 he had competed in England and Europe gaining many Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in numerous championships. Amos went to Japan to train at the headquarters of the Japan Karate Association and stayed 10 years. During that time he completed the 3-year instructor’s program of the JKA (only the 2nd Westerner ever to do so in its 50-year history), and opened his own school in the heart of Tokyo. In 2000 he moved to New York, as an established professional karate instructor with an international reputation. He is currently the chief instructor of the World Traditional Karate Organization heading its instructor program. According to Sensei David Pope, “He was great with the youth group and very informative and inspiring for our teenagers and adults of all levels of experience.” Saturday evening there was a gathering for dinner at Fox and Pheasant Inn, where the students had a great time getting to know and visit with Amos. Hirano Ha Karate is located at 604 Main Street in Montevallo. For more information: 665-1992. Pictured (L-R) Alex Green, Ronald Shin, Richard Amos, David Pope; front Thomas Frost and Eva Frost. St. Andrew’s Clothing Give-Away Montevallo FFA NEWS Submitted By Madeline Griffin During this past month, Montevallo FFA has been involved in many activities including the annual fruit sale, Joint Leadership Development Conference, National Convention and visiting the Corvette museum. The fruit sale was a success and is expected to arrive on December 9. Students go out into the community and sell fruit to businesses around Montevallo, which helps gain support for FFA. When the fruit arrives, active members are expected to help unload fruit from the truck. In October, officers went to the BJCC for the Joint Leadership Development Conference. We heard many amazing speakers who gave us tips on how to become a great leader, what qualities they have, and how they got where they are. There were many organizations involved: FFA, FCCLA, the ROTC program and a few others. A career fair had been set up in one of the exhibit halls. Also in October, officers went to National Convention. The convention was in Louisville, KY; the theme was “Amplify FFA”. There were two speakers: Dr. Rick Rigsby,, and Dr. Steve A. Brown. Dr. Rigsby told us how he got where he was and how he grew up. Dr. Brown made references to baseball to describe leadership. He is also the National FFA Advisor. Before leaving Kentucky, students went to the Corvette museum in Bowling Green. Happy Holidays! Next the women’s lacrosse team came and helped us with our National Fitness Challenge while teaching us a bit about that “really cool” sport. There will be lots of arts and crafts, great movies hopefully visits from our Club elf and rumor has it that Saint Nick himself will visit sometime. The MOST EXCITING news from here is that, beginning in January, we will be able to serve middle and high school students at the Boy Scout Hut, building on the start made by the city with their Montevallo Arts and Recreation (MARC) program. Details are still being worked out, but under the leadership of a full-time Teen Coordinator and a part-time Teen Counselor we will be open each school day. There will be a meeting on Thurs., December 10 at 6 pm at the Parnell Library to talk about what this community would like to see in a Teen Center.
