To help us to continue to prosper as a great Jeep club we need your input, help and commitment to carry out the many tasks that need to be completed through out the coming year. We have restructured the management committee so as to help share the workload and ensure that all members continue to enjoy the many activities that the club currently offers to members. There are some new roles and jobs to be done and some other roles have changed slightly ie: we do not have a trip coordinator now. We have split this role into a designated Bookings Officer who will manage all event, training and trip bookings, and we have now created a new role of Operations Officer who will manage the planning and administration side. We encourage all of you to think about the future direction of the club and would love to see some new faces involved in managing our future. Wives and Partners are encouraged to help out as well as the younger members of the club. We have seen a very enthusiastic group of members run a fantastically successful National Jeep Jamboree and we would love to see some of those very talented members involved in running the club. So come on, get out of the Jeep and help us make your club even better! An attached summary of roles will give you more information. Much has already been said and written about our magnificent Jamboree and there are undoubtedly many more wonderful memories yet to shared around our members. We can be certain of the multitude of stories which have come out of the Jamboree will be told around camp fires for years to come and many will become permanently embedded in Club folklore. From me, just a few observations about the Jamboree and more importantly a lot of very big thank yous to many, many people are appropriate. Firstly, the sheer scale of the Jamboree, as the whole event finally began taking shape up at Camp Jeep, was for me breathtaking. Despite more than 2 years of planning and preparation when thoughts of the Jamboree were never far away, I was quite unprepared for the fantastic sight from atop the Gymkhana area of a virtual sea of vehicles, tents, trailers, caravans and people sprawling over the huge camping area. Down by the river amidst the camp fire and marquees, the constant buzz of activity created so much excitement with people and vehicles moving in all directions. As for the Show 'n Shire in Marysville, who will ever forget the extraordinary spectacle of more than 200 Jeeps sliding into position with seemingly effortless precision around the Gallipoli Park Oval. Amazingly, the largest gathering of Jeeps ever witnessed outside North America was achieved without a hitch and in far less time than we expected. Secondly, everything went incredibly well and according to plan. The Club is indebted to our Event Director - Paul Kelly for the smooth running of the Jamboree. Words cannot adequately express our thanks to Paul and his family for their magnificent efforts. Throughout the 4 days and in the time leading up to the Jamboree, Paul, his wife Heather and the rest of the Kelly clan never once lost their cheerful good humour and purpose. A huge thank you goes to the tireless efforts of our dedicated group of organizers, helpers and other volunteers from the Club membership. Special thanks to the Jamboree Executive Team of Ian Fletcher, Roy Edward and Marcus Lee who devoted hundred of hours of their personal and © Copyright 2004 Melbourne Jeep Owners Club— Page 6 business time to planning and organizing the Jamboree. Up at Camp Jeep the team of Ian Cameron, Grant Jones, Geoff Sonnichsen, Myles Anderson, Andrew Findlay, Thad Lester, Oliver Spiess, Steve Petkowski, Ben Growns, Brett Dashwood, Wayne and Julie Kerr and many others put in an extraordinary effort working long shifts and hardly stopping for food or drink!! Thirdly, one could not miss the powerful sense of goodwill and happiness which seemed to pervade every area of the Jamboree. Wherever one mingled, from morning encounters around the shower blocks and the Lions Club breakfast BBQ, to heated discussions around raised car bonnets on trips or at the Show 'n Shine, and to gatherings around the camp fire in the evenings, it was impossible to escape the wonderful spirit of cheerful participation and cooperation. Thank you again each and every one of you for your part in our very own Jamboree. Whilst many of us will miss the sense of excitement and collective commitment generated by the Jamboree, we can be assured that for the Club, even bigger, better and brighter things await us in the future. Well, as I write this, it’s 3 weeks since the big event, and have I stopped smiling yet? Almost……. What a fantastic Jamboree! Sensational weather, 270 Jeeps, almost 700 people, no bad incidents, what could have gone better? Not much. Some of my best memories of the National Jeep Jamboree Victoria 2004: After we arrived on Thursday morning, the sight of the marquee set up was awesome. And when I walked into it, it looked even bigger! Even the Administration marquee was huge! As sponsors arrived and put up signage, it started to look like it was all meant to be. Ray Eastaugh (property owner and, by the end of the Jambo, an absolute legend!) was amazed by the size of it all……. The committee members that were able to come early were busy helping set up all over the property. Special mention to Grant Jones setting up our pump and water supply to the campground. As the shower truck arrived, it was obvious that the area we wanted it to set up in was too damp, so we changed plans and attempted to set up on the high part of the property. As the semi trailer drove thru the gate, he lost traction on the damp ground and that was it…… until Ray got his tractor and hooked up a chain and towed the truck in. It took a few attempts until it started moving and ended up in place. The attendant was a great bloke who was willing to bend over backwards to help out, and even ended up cleaning the portable toilets in the marquee area for us. Next the rubbish bins arrived and were unloaded without too much trouble. We had 30 240 lt wheelie bins, but could have done with double that number. In the meantime, Ian Cameron had set up communications in the Admin tent and he was to spend many hours in there during the Jambo – thanks Ian! After most of the day setting up, dinner time arrived (and © Copyright 2004 Melbourne Jeep Owners Club— Page 8 went) and at about 7.30 Nathan and I headed to the BlackSpur Roadhouse for a few hamburgers. As usual, the owners were happy to fire up the kitchen and cook us some burgers. A few drinks around the fire (and the first sight of Ray stoking the fire with tractor bucket loads of wood) and it was time for bed in anticipation of early arrivals in the morning…….. Friday morning I woke at about 4.30am with no hope of going back to sleep, so I rose at about 5.30 and started to get organised. More fantastic weather greeted me as the sun rose – I couldn’t believe our luck!! The toilet trailer arrived bright and early, and got a bit further into the campsite, but again Ray had to tow it in the rest of the way – I was so glad we had good weather or we would have had no chance…. The generators arrived next, a 35kVa for the showers and toilets, and a 50 kVa for the marquee area. Red Desert, who were catering, started to get organised and set up in the marquee. And then they started to come. Jeeps of all ages started to arrive at the registration tent. I started to welcome each one, until I was called away to attend to something else. A huge thank you to all who helped on the registration tent across the weekend. I know some of you (John Dalton, Geoff Sonnichsen, Wayne Kerr and many others) put in some long hours, it all helped make the weekend a success. In the meantime, the shop had opened and was in full swing. Across the weekend a lot of members and partners helped out in the Jambo Shop, and long hours were put in by Rhonda Raitt, Julie Kerr, Heather Kelly, Robyn Carmichael, Robin Clarke, Mary Lorenzo along with many others – thanks to you all! Friday afternoon’s trips were lined up without too much trouble (?!) and I had fun waving them off when the nod came from Geoff S. For us on site, some quiet time (?) was spent arranging dinner with Red Desert, the two Ian’s (Cameron and Fletcher) spent hours on computer organising trips etc etc. Peter Howard and Gary Cruickshank arrived with jackets and mannequins. Apparently the sight of Peter trying to dress the mannequins was absolutely hilarious, prompting Rhonda to tell him “that is usually done from the back!” This set Peter up for his usual hilarious antics around the fire later in the night…. As the trips rolled in late afternoon, we had the Narbethong CFA lined up to wash Jeeps for Saturday’s Show ‘n’ Shine. I don’t know how many were washed, but next I heard was that the CFA truck was bogged to the axles……not what I needed to hear, especially without Ray Eastaugh on site to help out! No number of Jeeps could extricate it, even the prime mover from the showers was unable to help. Eventually a heavy haulage truck was called. Then Ray arrived home and came to the rescue (again!). As soon as it was out, the haulage truck was cancelled (to much relief) and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Werribee Chrysler Jeep had arranged a band for the night October 2004 Ray and Lorraine Eastaugh and others. Some short speeches and the show n shine class winners were announced and trophys and prizes were awarded. As Hardrive started playing, people finished meals and some headed out to the fire. I must again mention Ray Eastaugh’s fire building skills. For those who missed out, Ray’s tractor has a large earthmoving bucket on the front, and Ray dumps two bucketloads of wood at a time on the fire. As most of this is pine from the local mill, it soon becomes hotter than the sun! Watching everyone move away is very amusing, and then people gradually move in over time as the fire dies down , until Ray’s tractor fires up again for another go. I was telling the Queenslanders that that is how we make fires down here in Victoria all the time! Eventually Hardrive moved out to the fire area to do some acoustic playing and a great night was had by all. The JBITZ Light Show also occurred around the fire, and I have no idea how an illuminated sheep made it to the Jambo Saturday morning I was up at 5.30 again, and another beautiful morning greeted me. At 6.30 I dragged out my se- from interstate, not to mention Vinyl Vera etc….. Special mention to Peter Howard for his John Michael cret “alarm clock” – Reville (the bugle call) played at full Howson shirt and suit!! noise belted out across the site, stirring campers into life. I hit the sack at about 1.30am (again!) and had no problem This was followed by “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” (the falling asleep after an exhausting day. Bette Midler version) then into some decent music. Unknown to me, some people (including Ray) had only left the fire after 4am, so had little sleep – sorry about that! A lot of hard work was put into assembling 200 Jeeps into their classes prior to leaving on the convoy to Marysville via Buxton. I headed to the Buxton corner at 7.50 in anticipation of the convoy. And what a sight!! The military jeeps led the convoy, followed by all the classes of Jeeps – everyone had smiles on their faces, and were waving enthusiastically as they made the turn. This was one of the highlights of the weekend for me, and it was great that the planning went so well. I joined the end of the convoy and arrived at Gallipoli Park to the amazing sight of almost 200 Jeeps ringing the oval in brilliant sunshine. The guys did a great job of assembling everyone so quickly. We ended up counting 235 Jeeps surrounding Gallipoli Park, and probably another 20 or 30 Jeeps in the main street of Marsville. Show n Shine judging took place, with 2 people of varying Jeep experience judging each class. Fletch and I judged Best In Show, and a very difficult job it turned out to be! Some afternoon trips left from Gallipoli Park, some from Valley Farm. We headed back to Valley Farm to have lunch Sunday morning saw even MORE sunshine (unbelievable!) and activity. Morning or all day trips left Valley Farm, while and keep organising all sorts of things. Once again, the 2 Ian’s had their heads buried in computers printing trip lists those who stayed onsite played in the dam, did the blindfold event, the see saw (and Heather says she balanced for the next day. the Wrangler the quickest) or just chilled out and spoke to A special thank you to Ross Brealey (JOCV and JBITZ) who assisted us when we had a medical emergency in the sponsors and so on. Some more trips went out Sunday afcampground. Ross’s expertise and experience came to the ternoon, some trips got back fairly late after hold ups, but fore as he attended to an epileptic while we waited for the all got back more in less in one piece. No major carnage, but a bit of panel damage and some broken components Ambulance. Thanks again Ross! Saturday afternoon saw lots of activities on the go, from the did occur. Jeep Dam, to the Blindfold gymkhana and the bog ‘ole and Sunday night the see saw. Everyone had an absolute ball, and we even after dinner was spent had jumping castles for the kids! The Warn RTI ramp, around the fire brought up by Tony Whitehead (USA 4X4) was employed and about 50 modified Jeeps “did the ramp” and the top ten again, and we were organised for a “Ramp Off” on Sunday. Saturday din- presented the rest of the ner was huge, and Red Desert catered for well over 350 people. We invited the Mayor and Mayoress of the Murrind- prizes, and indi Shire, Michael and Sue Coldham (4WDVIC President), then had a and they were absolutely fantastic! The Werribee guys (and girls) had a great weekend, and also kept Heather supplied with Jeep Juice for the weekend. The cry of “why is your hand empty?” when passing their marquee led to some very funny moments. Thanks guys! The Bog ‘Ole was used Friday afternoon and people had fun – except JimmyB of ausjeepoffraod.com fame who drowned his XJ after hitting the water too quick with a disconnected snorkel and sucking in a gutful of water. A standard KJ drove it straight after him, prompting the Turkey Award to JimmyB. A briefing and welcome to everyone there followed, then dinner and a good night around the fire (after organising as much as possible for Saturday) was had by all. We urged everyone to be up and ready to leave for Marysville by 8am the next morning. © Copyright 2004 Melbourne Jeep Owners Club— Page 9 October 2004 lucky prize draw to distribute the rest of the prizes. Some people walked away with prizes worth hundreds of dollars. Heather and I left the main fire at about 1am and joined the small fire at Marcus Lee’s where Tim Button slept in his chair, and Peter Howard continued his stories until the wee small hours. our sponsors for your support. The Jamboree would not have been a success without your support. I hope MJOC members will support any Jamborees in the future as they are held around Australia in the coming years. I know what a buzz it is to have visitors coming from interstate, and I hope we can return the favour! Paul Kelly Event Director National Jeep Jamboree Victoria 2004 JEEP JAMBOREE EXPERIENCE The Jamboree Adventure – From Mary Lorenzo & Oliver Spiess The Jamboree started a long time ago for us with me helping out over the last few month in the Jambo committee. Not one of the main workers in the committee, however trying to organise some trips and lead a few interstate Jeeps on nice tracks in Marysville and Toolangi. The first thing to do so was to re-think my Jeep strategy and how to upgrade the vehicle for the Jamboree. I had a 2” OME suspension and 31” tyres with dual air lockers. It always bothered me to see other guys go through the bog holes and me getting Monday morning, when I arose, was actually wet! It rained stuck. I know most of it depends on my driving skills, but I until about 10am, then started to dry out again. This was thought some additional equipment is necessary to make a just enough to make the trail slippery and those who went difference. Just before the Jamboree I upgraded to a 4,5” on trips had an absolute ball! Those who left early really Rubicon Express with 33” tyres and disconnects for the missed out. Tuesday morning saw us packing up the shop and any little bits and pieces before I headed off at about 11am still on a high from the success of the event. Again thank you to the Jamboree Committee for 2 years hard work and planning, all the MJOC members who helped out across the weekend, and also the partners of the Jamboree Committee who put up with us out at meetings regularly over the past 2 years, and a special mention to Donna for letting us keep Marcus out so many nights as we used his office for our meetings. Monday nights will be so boring now…… And of course a huge thank you to Chrysler Jeep and all © Copyright 2004 Melbourne Jeep Owners Club— Page 10 Here is where the negative things started with respect to the cottage. It was very enjoyable to be in a warm and comfortable place at night, however I think we missed out on some of the fun at night around the campfire. Other wise the relaxing evenings around our fireplace were helpful to be up to scratch the next morning. Friday, the big day has arrived. A lot of MJOC members have worked very hard for this and it all played out. The people arrived and we made friends right from the beginning. The first interstate visitor I met was Mike from Dampier in WA. He drove all the way with his Jeep behind the October 2004 bus on a trailer. Amazing what people do to be part of it. Registration tent and Camp Jeep worked well and Jeeps from all over Australia arrived. The trip planning was having some issues related to the PC and Ian was getting a little stressed. At the end he managed well and all the changes people were asking for could be accommodated. The first trips, Geoff was trying to get the Jeeps lined up for the Friday afternoon trips and had some issues with it. I tried to help out and organise them at the other end. Everybody seemed to be very happy and looking forward to the first trip of the Jamboree. I was responsible for the old E-Grade trip, which had been upgraded to a D-Grade. Only 6 Jeeps in my convoy, but it took us at least 15-20 minutes after the departure time to get going. Here it was, the first Jeep Jamboree trip for the National Jeep Jamboree Victoria 2004. We headed of north to the entrance to the Cathedral Range State Park. After turning of the Maroondah Hwy we let the tyres down and reorganised some roof rack bag and of we went. This was an easy drive but very scenic. I prepared some information for interstate Jeepers to explain the area and forest. Unfortunately I only had Victorians in the convoy. One of the vehicles had a NT plate, but Simon has moved back to Victoria after being in Darwin for a while. The trip went perfectly with the stops planned at Mt Margaret Gap and Keppel Falls Lookout. We came back to Camp Jeep on time and I think everybody enjoyed the easy and scenic drive. Back at Camp Jeep we had to get in line for the car wash, the CFA offered a car wash with the high-pressure hose for a small donation or buying a stubby holder. This worked quite well until everybody was done and the 8t CFA truck got stuck. This took a while to get him back out and when we left for the cottage they were still working on the truck. most everything possible to be mounted to a ZJ. On the other hand Peter prepared the vehicle in Town & Country style. He only clean one half of the vehicle, he even put the road tyres on the clean side to re-enact the Disco advertisement. Well both were tied and we were asked to make a decision on the winner. We did not really wanted to make one and at the end we did. However the last and final call luckily was made to give both vehicles a price. After the Show’n Shine we needed to go back to Camp Jeep to start the afternoon trips. B-Grade – Buxton Burner, we have not been on those tracks before, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a couple of guys from our club helping. Wayne W. took the middle of the convoy and Steve P. the end. The tracks were interesting but dry, therefore not very challenging. Half way through the exercise I wanted to have the convoy catch up again and stopped. After turning the vehicle off and on again after 5 min to continue the engine overheated and the bottom seal of the radiator was gone. Well, that was just fixed a few days ago by Poly 4x4. Jim was The first day was a success both for the MJOC and us. apologetic after I returned to Camp Jeep and had him fix The next day would result in a mixed feeling. In the morning I helped to direct the Show’n Shine, which was it again after the Jamboo. What was the solution? Black Pepper, one of our vehicles had black pepper and we convenient because we stayed right across from Gallipolli Park. It was awesome to see the 235 Jeeps come refilled the radiator with water and black pepper and off we went. Unfortunately 4 convoys were going through down the main street from the Buxton side roundabout the same area and JJ stooped by my vehicle to take and turn into Gallipolli Park. Everything happened on photos. Normally it is his vehicle not mine. Anyway I detime and very well organised. Everybody in the Jeeps had a smile on the face, just fantastic. Driving my vehicle cided to go back to Camp Jeep to make sure the daminto the Park last and seeing everybody lined up around age would not be too much and Steve would finish the trip with the rest of the guys. We also took a Willys back the oval was amazing. We are not alone with the Jeep with a supposed to be broken engine mount. lifestyle. The whole day went around the gymkhana I am planning for sure to attend the next Jamboree in area, the jeep seesaw and the bog hole. All great fun and Queensland next year, however I can‘t wait for the next one organised by MJOC !!! lots of story to tell. The main events were Sam Newman trying to balance the TJ on the seesaw and a family competition. Heather Kelly balanced the TJ very well and Paul Keep Jeeping, was looking at it, were you surprised? After teasing him a Mary & Oliver little he also tried and balanced the vehicle, however not as quickly as Heather did. The dam was lots of fun and many vehicles got really dirty. Myles had fun with the blind OOP’s but all’s well race and that seemed to be one of the highlights of the day. There are plenty of walking tracks in this park as well as the mighty Murray to explore. Canoes are available for hire at the Hattah store only a few KLM's away. Tuesday 2nd Nov.. 9am departure and return home. Camping facilities .. We will camp at the Hattah Camp Ground which includes picnic tables, fire places, toilets (with paper) and lake views. Picnic shelters and free gas BBQ are also available. Water is available in limited quantity at the visitor's centre so it is recommended that you bring a 20 litre container full of Melbourne Waters finest. Hot showers (1) are also available at the Hattah Store for $2.50. The Hattah Store also has other supplies including petrol/diesel. I have a comprehensive list. This trip probably suits those among us who are fascinated by good old Mother Nature rather than low range junkies. The Hattah park complex covers some 80,000 plus hectares and possesses one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country. We have chosen mid spring for the trip to hopefully catch the wildflowers and mild weather. Hope you can join us... Trip Leader - Wayne Kerr. Razz gave a very interesting and informative presentation about servicing your Jeep and gave some great advice about maintenance. Razz was very impressed with our club meeting and how we do things, so much so as he has now kindly donated a set of Cooper Tyres to the value of $1100. The club raffled these tyres and raised a substantial amount of money for the club. Razz already services Jeeps for various club members and he owns his own Jeep. We are certainly receiving great feedback about the thoroughness and quality of his work on Jeeps.
