first quarter 2010 newsletter - International Master Bike Builders
INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
Bloomington, MN. Kennedy H.S. this year is off to a fast
pace of bike building accomplishments. Kevin Baas, IMBBA
certified motorcycle instructor and teacher at the Kennedy
H.S. facility has built, over a period of 13 years, a dynamic
shop environment that will rival most bike shops today.
Kevin and his students participate daily in the shop and class
environments learning the skills necessary to becoming a bike builder. From shop theory, to
shop practices in metal fabrication, sheet metal, welding, brazing, both Tig and Mig. The
students are even exposed to foundry equipment, not to mention, CNC machine, CNC
plasma cutter, pipe bending, and electrical skills are all defined and practiced in this well
equipped school. IMBBA visited the Kennedy HS last week to bear witness and examine the
knowledge base and witness the skills of bike building and fabrication performed and
learned by the students. IMBBA was impressed and the students were knowledgeable to the
trade. Continued…Page 2

Engineering and the Chopper Institute and will be sponsoring high schools like Kennedy from the
proceeds of IMBBA memberships. Starting with, tools, equipment and knowledge based
instructions that will lead students to certification for the motorcycle industry trade.
Kennedy H.S. participated in the Donnie Smith Bike Show held in Kennedy High
School’s own backyard this weekend drawing crowds around their builds and answering
spectator’s questions. Several other schools were in attendance to compete with Kennedy H.S.
they were: Caledonia Chopper Class-Caledonia, MN., CCCTC-Clearfield, PA., Eden Chopper ClassEden, NY., MTI- Mitchell, SD and HRHS - New Richmond, WI.
IMBBA has made a commitment to provide as much support to these schools as
possible and to encourage them to learn the trade. Each student is awarded a free membership
into the IMBBA where they must maintain academic standards in order to complete the IMBBA
certification of “Associate Technician” As long as they remain a student, IMBBA will pay for their
membership and continue to offer support to the schools in the way of providing course
instructions and help with tools and equipment.

The Bernice McNaughton H.S. “Bike
Klub” out of Moncton, BC. Canada,
Canada’s only H.S. program was
unable to attend the competition,
As a result, IMBBA has pledged to
help with expenses so that they can
make next year’s Donnie Smith’s
Bike Show and compete with fellow
students from the USA.
While
Canada’s
IMBBA
Motorcycle Instructor and teacher,
Marc Mazzerolle, at the Bernice
McNaughton H.S. is not slowing
down, they received a wonderful
help from their own countries Bike Builders when Trick Factory Customs, IMBBA members,
Tim Lejambe and Rob Mosser traveled 2900 miles to spend several days with the students
learning the art of motorcycle building.
Any members, who wish to contribute either their time or funds to help these students
and instructors, please feel free to contact IMBBA’s President, Jeff Starke.

DAYTONA 2010 ! RUN FROM THE SUN...
Daytona Beach, FL… This years Daytona Bike Week March 2010, was shrouded with
clouds, rainy weather, and cold temperature, which kept many riders from attending.
Several regular vendors reported, in their opinion, that the population was down 50% where
others basically said the last weekend we hope to recover. While optimism was at its core of
true bikers, weather was the last to drive people away. There were spots of crowds and
gatherings but evident of lesser than more.
This years Boardwalk Bike show had less than 2/3rds of the bikes they normally have. and
the Rats Hole show was down 50%. The remnants of overnight partying on main street was a
ghost town, a sight unsettling. Normally, Main street, early mornings till about 10 a.m. had
the familiar signs of recovering from hangovers and bikes still parked in the spot they were
the night before. But this year, one could walk the entire main street and not bump
shoulders in crowds. At the end of main street, many vendors were absent and Main Street a
shorter distance to cover.
While Beach Street, remained open and flourishing. Rossmeyers, on the day of the Rats
Hole Show, wasn't packed with the usual crowds and custom bikes as seen years prior.
Down on US 1 from Main Street, I made a record trip of 15 minutes to US 1 and the
Broken Spoke usually taking 40-50 minutes to arrive at the same place. The usual traffic
commonly found was missing. The evening crowds came out on Saturday and Sunday of the
last weekend. All indications that the economy is still broken. More jobs lost here than all
the rocker shaft o-rings for a shovel head sold in the 70's. But, the best of the worst was the
people and the optimism of both vendors and Bikers. Both well wishers to the return of our
culture. I have always said. "Daytona is to bikers what salmon is to the stream. we have to go
up stream each year to spawn then die." I never meant it in this fashion. Daytona is coming
back! The crowds will return, and riding and socialization and networking will prevail. We
see evidence everywhere that Daytona will re-invent itself and prosper. After all, we are
survivors.
The Sun may have run away, but the riders shined and still despite the suns late arrival, it
was fun!
As for me.... "As long as Daytona has pavement, I'll bring my loud exhaust!"- Jeff Starke,
IMBBA President.

Master Judges from Canada and the USA judging the bike show. Bike builders, this is one you
don’t want to miss! IMBBA has been inviting the winners of the “Best of the Show” bike from
IMBBA shows season to attend this Bike show held at the Broken Spoke Saloon at this year’s 70th
Anniversary of Sturgis Bike Week. The winner of this Bike show will represent USA in the World

the World Cup Competition that has Cash Prizes. In Addition, IMBBA will help sponsor the press
corps of each participating country in that competition.
Canada leads the board with the most points for winning bike shows globally, which is
why the world must come to their country to compete in 2012 and why Canada is holding the top
position on the IMBBA certification Board. The Country that beats Canada, if they can, will host
the 2014 World Cup competition. So Sturgis Bike Week at the Broken Spoke Saloon has a lot at
stake for builders and something globally to shoot for and win this competition.

In this year, IMBBA has been busy shrinking the world stage of Motorcycle Students,
Technicians, Bike Builders, Fabricators, Designers, Engineers and Master Bike Builders. IMBBA
recognizes and appreciates the cooperation, patience and efforts to overcome the language barriers,
time zones and various technology barriers. This brings us together as first as riders, then enthusiasts
and ultimately based on our shared passion for bike building. The outpouring and encouragement
from Builders worldwide in embracing IMBBA certifications standards and judging standards has
been tremendous and gratifying. IMBBA’s vision and realization holds true. “Craftsmanship comes

DONNIE SMITH BIKE SHOW - HOSTED NEW
VISIONS OF OLD SCHOOL...
RE-INVENTED!
The landscape of bike building changing as seen at the
Donnie Smith Bike Show last weekend. Bobbers, choppers
and the like transform and redefine old school popularity.
Persona and brawn mere together to form ground
pounding rides that suggest highway 66 will open again. A
new generation weathered by the impressions left by the
old school builders gone by.
IMBBA was impressed and encouraged by the Kennedy
High School Bike Club as just weeks before, their
instructor, Kevin Baas a.k.a. "Teach" had knee surgery and
was out for two weeks. The students continued to meet
the deadline and arrived at the show with several bikes to
display. Other high school bike building clubs; Caledonia

In an effort to help builders, mechanics, and general novices in assembly work of parts and
accessories and to identify the really nuts and bolts to what judges look for especially in a
close scored bike competition. Did you know that it can come
down to hardware, nuts and bolts?
Wiring and the method by which the assembler/
mechanic/ bike builder applied the known trade of SAE/Metric
hardware’s. For example, when judging a motorcycle build,
judges look for consistency in assembly. Meaning, say looking
under gas tanks on a custom build judges often find that the
locknuts, (nuts having the nylon insert) will appear with the
standard two-three threads protruding from the nut, and then looking further discover the
threads on the nut on the opposite side barely break through the nylon insert of the nut, or
worse, the threads are five to six threads sticking out. When bolting a bike together,
especially a custom bike whether you’re in or show or not, follow standard SAE/Metric
hardware nomenclature. In a tiebreaker case, between another bikes you’re competing
against, it could very well be the point that earns you second place.
Stick to a commitment of style of hardware as well. Introducing several styles of
hardware can really hurt in a competition. Especially if the one you’re competing against
maintained hardware control.
If you introduce a flat washer to the motorcycle, be sure it fits the I.D. (inner Diameter)
of the bolt it’s applied with. Too often judges find washers that move around because the
I.D. is too big and it doesn’t
center. This can cause
problems with paint and chrome
surfaces,
besides
being
obvious. And again, can mean
the difference between First
or Second place.
One other
point to consider, since the
sum of all parts that make up the
build of a motorcycle, reflect
the knowledge of the builder, and speaks volumes of the quality of the assembled finished
product.
On many stock class competitions or restorations, accessories are purchased and most
times comes with its own hardware, generally Taiwan or China hardware, using this
hardware especially when you have multiple accessories and not staying with SAE standards
leaves your bike open for point’s deductions. Due primarily because the variety between one
accessory manufacture and the other differ in selected pre-packed hardware. The judges
know this and when looking for the top class assembled bike will look in these areas for
weakness. Maintain Hardware control and your points will go up no matter who’s judging
the bike. – Jeff Starke

Over the last five years, Randy and Verne from the Canadian Biker Build off
(CBBO) Promoters have worked overtime in bringing Canada’s Bike Builders on the World
map by introducing them to tuff competition. Over the five years, Builders have been
discovered and careers launched. “IMBBA has been there and saw the growth. Canadian
builders, one of a kind, talented, diligent, and competitive as hell!” Said IMBBA Director of
Field Operations, Ken Marciniak.
The Canadian Builders have come into the US and competed over the last five
CBBO’s and have taken home the gold in prestigious shows such as The World Famous –
International Rat’s Hole Chopper Show in Daytona Beach, FL. The Board Walk Bike Show,
INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
PAGE 18
Daytona Beach, FL. Sturgis Bike Show, Sturgis, SD. Las Vegas Bike Fest, Las Vegas NV. To
name just a few.
Now with full steam ahead… Canadian Builders are manned and ready to take
on the world. IMBBA’s World Cup Competition is the Venue in 2012. The next two years,
Builders from around the world will build in complete secrecy, their bikes that will compete
in 2012 at the World Cup Competition representing their country.
Hosted by IMBBA. Its
only proper that the place some of these talents were discovered at the CBBO, return to
compete with their fellow Canadian Builders to see who is going to represent Canada in
2012. The winner (which ever country) if successful in beating Canada, will have the
bragging rights and in 2014, two years after it begins again, But, the world of bike builders
will then have to go to that winning country to compete and try to take the World Cup away
from them. GOOD LUCK at the CBBO 2010!

Presidents Message:
While 2009 looked pretty bleak around the globe, as January turned the corner of 2010
everywhere I went, in and out of the USA, I found bike shops saying business is picking up,
and some said they are busier than hell. I took some of it with a grain of salt, until February
hit and everyone was telling me how busy they are. Cinci- V Twin
was off to a good start as crowds fill the ground floor and I
noticed bike shows crowds were picking up. But, the best news
comes when other countries begin to take advantage of the
down time to start networking with the rest of the Bike building
elements of the industry.
Bike shows are one of those elements that we can’t do
without. Motorcycle events and spectators; expect to see a bike show. IMBBA is doing its
part to raise the quality of the builds by not rewarding bikes just because they have a way
cool paint job. In the last few years, IMBBA has been training, both academically, as well as,
physical hands on training and mentoring judges. The points system, we are extremely
proud of evolved into what really made good sense, by drawing a direct correlation of the
bikes points to the builders efforts in the finished product..
In the next few years, IMBBA will emerge as a standard not only in trade
competency, but, an excepted value for consumers when dealing with bike repairs,
modifications, performance and fabrication. The education will begin at the high school
levels and the aftermarket components for all makes and models globally along with foreign
and domestic styling will not be a mystery anymore. With the advent of the rest of the
industrial world becoming IMBBA certified the language barriers broken and the builder’s
world shrunk to a manageable size that everyone plays by the same rules and is recognized
globally for those contributions by IMBBA, will be a dream come true.
On behalf of IMBBA. Its staff, and country representatives sharing the goal set forth and
believing in its mission, I applaud the members for their support and look forward with
extreme pride in working hard to make this an organization we can one day look back upon
and know we left this industry better than the way we found it.

BOB MCKAY – IMBBA MASTER BIKE
BUILDER, MASTER JUDGE, & “HALL of FAME
INDUCTEE, What’s next?
Kingston Ontario, Bob McKay is now the IMBBA Representative for Canada. Bob, along
with his wife, Dianne McKay, have established a good solid foundation in Canada for the
IMBBA. Bob’s vision is to put Canada on the map for Custom Bike Builders, be a support
system for riders, and enthusiasts and bring judging fairness to the industry.
Bob has been undergoing training and personal sacrifice to take over the reins for
IMBBA’s, Liz Fritshaw, and former Director of membership relations for Canada, who has
passed the office over to Bob McKay. Liz, will continue on as one of the IMBBA’s
International Directors.
Both Bob and Dianne have established great report with Canada’s Bike Building
communities, as well as, IMBBA members and supporters.
Bob’s first office duties, was to extend membership renewals to all Canadian members
until September 2010. This gives Bob and Dianne the time to get their arms around all the
aspects that Bob feels necessary, from the member’s standpoints, as well as builders, while
introducing to Canada the IMBBA Way of judging points system and builder education and
certifications.
Ryan Robinson, IMBBA certified Bike Builder level II is working to support Bob and is
currently undergoing Associate Judge training and completing his Judges course for testing.
Bob has three certified IMBBA judges in Canada, Shawn Britten, Tim Armstrong, and Ron
Szoczei. Bob completed his Master Judge training and certification and now is able to bring
to Canada Bike shows sanctioned by the IMBBA. IMBBA’s requirement for a country to have
sanctioned IMBBA shows is a minimum of one Master Judge and one certified judge. This is
an IMBBA standard for bike shows to ensure the points and judging system remains intact
and practiced so bikes are judged by the IMBBA standard worldwide.
While Bob continues to establish the IMBBA standards for certification, education and
training, he also is busy supporting at the high school level. The Bernice McNaughton High
School motorcycle “Bike Club” (Canada’s only High School Bike club) instructed by IMBBA
certified Instructor and teacher Marc Mazzerolle. The school has been on Bob’s radar for
some time with helping them get the support they need. Bob’s influence of 35 + years in
Canada has been a big help in getting the high school support.
Bob is a pioneer and a leading advocate for helping the other countries establish their
representatives. Both Bob and IMBBA president Jeff Starke are making plans to travel to
Italy this summer to help Italy’s country representative, IMBBA certified Master Bike Builder,
Jerry Caronte establish a foot hold and receive the training necessary for Italy to grow in the
world industry of Bike shows and Bike Building. IMBBA will also visit other bike builders in
Italy including IMBBA certified Master Bike Builder Roberto Totti.
Many thanks to Bob and Dianne for accepting this huge undertaking. IMBBA is proud to
have you represent Canada.
