Camp Quilt-A-Lot - Quilt Wyoming Call for Help
April-May 2016 Volume 18 - No. 2 Camp Quilt-A-Lot - Quilt Wyoming Call for Help - Ricky Tims Greetings Camp Quilt-A-Lot campers! You will soon be receiving your brochure with all of the camp information and class descriptions. There are terrific classes with fabulous teachers eager to teach us new techniques and projects. We in the NW region are so excited about the upcoming Quilt Wyoming at Northwest College in Powell July 14-17 and hope you will gather your quilting friends and come join us. We are doing a few things in a very different manner. First, there are three national teachers so there will be campfire talks/trunk shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We hope you will plan your trip to Powell accordingly and be ready for dinner and a talk on Thursday. The Thursday night dinner is included in the meal package. Our other changes are based on facility issues. There will be no vendor mall so take advantage of the Shop Hop to shop your way to Powell; and we will have a “walking quilt show” before each of the evening programs. Bring one or two of your awesome quilts for an informal walk across the stage quilt show! As in past years, registrations should be postmarked April 15 or later. For color photos of the classes please check out the website www.wsqg.org. We look forward to seeing lots of you in Powell in July! 1 1 2 2 3 Camp Quilt-A-Lot Call for Help - Ricky Tims President’s Message - A. Pendleton Officers & Appointees WSQG Election 2016 4 4 5-11 8 9 I have just concluded an emotional phone call with David Taylor. Here are more details about the explosion and fire at his home on February 17, 2016. The explosion is under investigation, but it appears that ice/snow slid from the roof onto the gas meter causing it to breech the line and cause the explosion. David was not home at the time. He was teaching in Chicago. What was lost: ● His very first quilt is gone. It was made from his Grandmother’s pattern from calico prints. In David’s words, “It’s just gone, it’s nothing but charred ruins." ● His first pictorial quilt, Woodland Spirits, is gone. ● The quilt he has worked on as a personal project since 2003 (which was nearing completion and was on his Handy Quilter), is gone. ● His BERNINA sewing machines and his Handy Quilter Sweet 16 is gone. ● All of his threads are gone. What was not lost: ● His extensive Harry Potter collection is untouched pristine, untouched. ● His bedroom, untouched. ● His new Hogwarts model that he created after Christmas was in his kitchen. Most everything in the kitchen is gone, but the Hogwarts model is untouched. ● His fabrics are covered in soot, but appear to be salvageable and members of his guild in Steamboat Springs will assist in caring for them. His most beloved quilt, “Did you Wash your Beak?” is on exhibit at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum so it was not in his home at the time. …Call for Help Continued Page 4 Membership - L. How are you doing with your New Year’s Resolutions??? I have been working on guild challenges! So my resolution to finish UFO’s is on hold for a little while, but not for long! I really want to get started on my UFO’s because I still like them. From time to time we should all drag out those UFO’s and see what is hiding in the back of our stash. If you no longer like your UFO’s they make great silent auction items at your quilt show and/or you could do a UFO’s exchange night with your local guild ladies. As we all know the most common reason a project becomes a UFO is that we have lost interest in the pattern or the fabric. So dust off those UFO’s and give them new life if not in your world, someone else’s. It is time to start planning to attend Quilt WY 2016. The Ladies are working hard on Camp-Quilt-A-Lot so we should have a great time in July. Please start thinking about running for an office. Happy Spring 2041 E. The insurance will replace everything that is replaceable. Obviously they cannot replace his one-of-a-kind treasured quilts. Lee Carruthers Membership Director Phone: (307) 632-0878 Email:[email protected] David’s insurance will also provide him lodging until he can return home. At this time it is not sure if the structure will be restored, torn down and rebuilt, or whether or not he will have to relocate. David expects several months of being displaced. David plans to continue with his teaching commitments. David has a very strong support group so he will not be abandoned in his time of need. Region Show your support: For those who wish to do something as a way of supporting David and letting him know you care, I am creating a thread drive to replace his threads. David only uses cotton threads. He uses solid and variegated threads by Superior, Sulky, YLI, and Aurifil. If you would like to help replenish David’s thread collection as a way to say you care, please send a spool or two (doesn’t have to be new), to: Total: Threads for David c/o Ricky Tims PO Box 392 La Veta, CO 81055 Central Northeast Northwest Southeast Southwest Out-of-State Members February 29, 2016 65 87 36 59 24 12 283 Welcome New and Returning Members! REGIONAL DIRECTORS donated a sample quilt, The Meandering Moose, which was CENTRAL pieced by Judy F. and quilted by Carla A. to The Children’s Deb Zelanak Advocacy Program. The Children’s Advocacy Project Night Can you believe that spring is officially here already? I can’t. or at least not by the number of UFOs I have stacked up and wanted to get finished before the weather turned warm. Guess I’ll be taking a few of them to the Spring Quick Retreat in April. I can’t wait!! Do you enjoy quilting with others or do you prefer working by yourself? I know I get more done by myself but love the camaraderie and fun at the quilt retreats, not to mention being able to pick up new tricks and techniques. If the retreats are too distant, or length is too long, or not frequent enough for you, check out what’s offered through your local quilt club or shop. Lots of the shops and clubs have a sew-in day or offer one-day classes. Others have block exchanges, are participating in the National Row by Row and are part of the State Shop Hop. There sure is a lot to do. First up is the Wyoming Star Quilt Guild that had a successful Quilt Fest the end of January. Winners of the People’s Choice Awards are: Best of Show: Judy Powell Quilts: 1st Place Judy Powell, 2nd Nancy Wright, 3rd Nita Virden; Wall Hangings 1st Barb David, 2nd Daria Wood, 3rd Daria Wood; Other, 1st Delores Warfield, 2nd Barb David, 3rd Muriel Kraus. When you’re planning your spring travels and you’re going through Douglas, stop at Prairie Stitcher. They’ll be participating in the Wyoming Shop Hop and Row by Row. They also have several classes planned for spring that include Accent on Angles, Washtub Club’s Road to Chicago. Butterfly Garden and Ethel May’s album Block Quilt. The Sagebrush Sisters meet at the Prairie Stitcher the 2nd Wednesday at 7:00pm each month. Activities this year include a color crayon challenge, Quilts of Valor, Christmas Challenge and much more. Stop by and see us and enjoy an evening of fun. If you have questions on any of the shop’s classes or Sagebrush Sisters activities, give Tammi a call at 358-5571. Sandie, Kalico Kat, and I want to thank everyone, especially Renee D, who helped complete the 32 quilts donated to the Red Cross for distribution to the families of the Cole Creek fire. If you’re looking for ways to use your quilting skill, Kalico Kat has several opportunities. Work continues on the quilts for homeless vets and for the High School Graduating students. The 25 quilts needed for the graduating students must be finished by May. Help is still needed with piecing these quilts, quilting and binding. Also, Kalico Kat has of Giving will be May 20th at the Wolcott Galleria starting at 5:30. There is an open bar and catering by Qdoba and Famous Dave’s. Silent and live auctions. Tickets are $40 and available at the door. The meandering Moose is a flannel quilt and would make a great present for that special guy and help raise money for a great program. Along with these worthwhile opportunities, Kalico Kat is also participating in the National Row by Row this year. If you like to socialize while you quilt, stop in for their Wednesday and Friday Sew-ins from 10:30am to 4:30pm. They have ironing stations and cutting tables set up so you don’t have to worry about those. Bring your own supplies and projects and see how much you can get done. Cost is $5. Give Sandie a call at (307) 237-8458 for more info. Sheep Camp Quilt Supply (between Riverton and Shoshoni) also had a number of activities, including a One-Block Wonder, From the Ground Up wool appliqué and miniature double Irish Chain classes. A Little House on the Prairie Trunk Show took place in February as well as a Quilts of Valor sew-in. Starting in April the Block Swappers Club will be turning in their first set of blocks. It’s not too late to sign up. Butter-Fly Away is the theme for this six-month session. Participants will make 12 butterfly blocks each month, bring them in by the 1st Saturday beginning in April and then pick up the swapped blocks on the 2nd Saturday. You will need to purchase a total of four green backgrounds, 1/3 yard each, and then add fabrics from your stash for the butterflies and you are set! Just imagine all the great varieties of butterflies you’ll receive for your next quilt!! The monthly Quilts of Valor Group meeting is help on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 10am to 3pm. Bring a potluck dish to share for lunch. The UFO Nite Owls meet the 1st Wednesday of each month. Bring your UFOs, “Problem –Child”projects and such and you will able to get assistance as needed. This fun evening lasts from 6:00-9:00pm. Bring a snack to share! What FUN! A Camden Bag Class will be taught by Dot on Saturday, April 16 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. This fun project will use your Jelly Rolls (2 ½”x WOF fabrics). A sample is in the store. Fee: $35. Bring your lunch!! Blakeman Vac & Sew will be in the store Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2. If your best friend, the sewing machine, is feeling a little under the weather or just needs a little TLC, call the store and get your name on the list. Special pricing for the clinic will apply if we have at least 20 machines for them to work on! Central Continued on Page 6… REGIONAL DIRECTORS …Central Continued from page 4 Tea Leaf Class on the 2nd, or we may work on projects of our choice. (Of course the food will be fabulous!) Sheep Camp’s 2015 BOM is complete. There will be a showand-tell evening on Friday, April 22 form 6:30 to 8:30pm. Finger foods and drinks will be provided. Bring your completed project and prepare to see a few hints about a new Block-of-the-Month program to start in June – a mystery quilt! Plans are well underway for our August 12-13-14 quilt show, Cabin Fever. Vendors have been signed, entries for the Cowboy Auction have been volunteered, more grab bags and other specialties are planned for the boutique. It sounds like a great time! The Never Sweat Needlers Quilt Guild here in Dubois has been busy as usual. This year’s raffle quilt Wind River Cabin is already on display and they are selling tickets. It’s gorgeous! If that doesn’t sound like enough to keep busy, each guild meeting they’re sharing their versions of this year’s Block of the Month project, Pioneer Sampler. You should see the variety of color and fabric choices! Awesome! Stitches N Time Quilt Guild in Douglas has been busy with smaller projects so far this year. They meet once a month from 9:00 to noon. The projects, if not completed on that day, take very little time at home to complete. Sonia Cottrell and other instructors have been leading to help make project choices. On January 9th, Betty James instructed how to make a very sophisticated zipper “quilt as you go” bag. 2016 project ideas were reviewed. The February project was one that was voted on by the group. Scrappy blocks were made from a pattern called “Fond Memories” from a Fons & Porter magazine. Each quilter brought the scraps for the petals and Sonia furnished the background fabric from her stash. The quilt, when completed, will be given away locally as a charity quilt. In March the group made Tote Bags that are attached to a wheelchair or a walker with Velcro. The bags have pockets that hold glasses, magazines, remote controls or any other item one needs to keep nearby. The bags will be donated to the local Care Center or Senior Center. Wind River Cabin Quilt - Never Sweat Needlers Members are also busily stitching up more Quilts of Valor for this year’s recipients (more Viet Nam vets). One of our member’s daughter is retiring from the service after 22 years and is getting a very special quilt made especially for her by mom. Their community sew day on a QOV is April 9th. This year’s President’s Challenge is quite challenging and is due at the June meeting. Members must include as many of the 36 scavenger list items on the quilt project as possible (everything from an article of clothing to a spade to a dragonfly to a sewing notion—you get the idea!). Results will be displayed at our show in August. The Guild’s “slumber party”is planned for April 1 and 2nd at the Headwaters. Stephanie from Sheep Camp will teach the At each meeting the quilting ladies not only show their skill in their quilting projects, they also demonstrate their skills in baking goodies for the group. You never know what someone will bring and it is always very good. Tote Bag for Wheelchair or Walker If you’re interested in helping plan Quilt Wyoming 2018, Central is hosting and would love to have your help. Next planning meeting is scheduled for 30 April and will be at 10:00am at Sheep Camp Quilt Supply. See you then or sooner. Deadline: May 1, 2016 The Laramie Art Quilters are pleased to present: Abstracting the West: An exhibition of art quilts Juried by Patty Hawkins July 1 – September 30, 2016 Hosted by the Wyoming Territorial Prison Historic Site 975 Snowy Range Road Laramie, WY Entry forms & exhibit information available at: www.wyomingterritorialprison.com or by contacting [email protected] www.visitlaramie.org REGIONAL DIRECTORS SOUTHEAST Daenette More In January I reported to you that my New Year’s resolution was to organize my quilting room. Well… progress is slow but I have not added any more chaos to the room and in fact have built three new quilt tops out of the contents. Of course these were not UFO’s BUT they were all made out of stash fabrics!. Hurrah for me! I also took a surprise trip to Puerto Rio for 10 days. Sadly, I report that “quilting is NOT a national pastime in Puerto Rico…” So I had to settle with helping my husband Mike with his Photography hobby. It is truly beautiful there and not too hot and humid in March. Variety Artisans Fabric & Gifts, in Chugwater, is having an inventory reduction sale the whole month of April! Store is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10-4 Location: 307 3rd St. Chugwater, 307-422-3214. They need to make room for new inventory. 30% off all bolted fabric (1 yard min. cuts), 25% off all books, Aurifil thread 1422 yd spools normally $13.75 on special for $10.00 each, and lots more. It might be worth a trip !! A shop hop! Yeah! Getting on to the rest of the region. The Southeast Region Spring UFO Retreat is about to take place, April 1-3 at LCCC in Cheyenne. If you haven’t signed up yet, you may still participate by e-mailing me at [email protected] . This activity is now open to anyone who would like to join us. Whooo is coming to quilt? Cheyenne Heritage Quilters in Cheyenne has been going strong. Since they meet twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Monday nights they have lots of opportunities to spread the art of quilting. On March 7, a Round Robin Demo was held, consisting of four demonstrations: (1) Disappearing Hourglass Block by Carol Gardner, (2) magical 2 ½” strip block by Sue Frerich, and (3) Snap bags that use metal measuring tape in the closure Cathy James by Cathy James (picture shown). Donna Dolan showed cute sleeping mats for kids. Plus they had a jelly roll exchange with 2 ½” strips. It was a fun night! Coming up on March 21 Carolyn McCormick, author and inventor of “Add-a-quarter” ruler, which has permanently changed the rules for paper piecing will be presenting a program. Then on April 4th, Marci Baker from Colorado will be presenting. She is an author of many books including Not Your Grandmother’s Flower Garden. Plus in April and May, CHQ is having special guest trunk show presenters that are CHQ members: Mary Ellen Little, Carol Gardner, Bea Dersham and Sandy Farrell. Good times! NEW!!! There will be a Quilt Show in conjunction with the 31st Chili Cook-off, June 18, 2016 at the Community Center in Chugwater, Wyoming. Our regional quilt stands will be holding the quilts. Another reason to attend the Chili Cook Off besides an amazing good time. The Goeshen County Quilters in Torrington always have a full docket of fun things to learn and do. In January a class was given by guild member Beth Eaton, on the Double Wedding Ring Quilt. Thank you for sharing. They are always doing something exciting. Springtime in the Rockies, a one-stop Shop Hop will be held April 8-9 at the Ranch (Larimer County Fairgrounds) outside of Loveland Colorado. There are 17 shops signed up to have booths, plus demos and other fun activities. There are three Wyoming shops participating this year. Let’s support them! GOLDEN THIMBLE AWARD The Golden Thimble Award is presented annually at Quilt Wyoming and recognizes those individuals, organizations, clubs or guilds who have contributed notably to our mission of educating and preserving the quilting art. The deadline for submittal is July 1, 2016. Download the form at http://wsqg.org/goldenthimble-award/. Send your nominations by email to [email protected] or by postal mail to Mary Lee Dixon, 503 Princeton Lane, Cheyenne, WY 82009. REGIONAL DIRECTORS NORTHWEST Marylou Doyle Greetings from the road. I knew I was going to be out of town for two weeks and the Patchwords deadline was going to come while I was gone. I have tried using my mini iPad and kindle fire, but, oh my, the letters on there are so small--or my fingers are so big! I had not paid proper attention to the trip details so I thought I was going to be at the Timeshare before now and have access to a proper computer. So goes life. We had a wonderful time in Wickenburg, AZ visiting a grandson who has been there for the winter so he could team rope. He did make it to the big finals this weekend. Now we are at the Mountain West Basketball tournament in Vegas. It has not been near as much fun as last year when they won. This year both teams were one and done. As soon as that gets over, several grandkids get into town to do Spring Break. They count on their Grandfather to get them a place to stay. I will be ready to quilt when I get home!! My husband watches a sports show called "Around the Horn". I feel like this is "Around the Northwest District", so here goes. TAGY's (Textile Artists of the Greater Yellowstone) quilt exhibit, that I reported to you last time and is being held at the Heart Mountain Internment Center between Cody and Powell, has been extended for the summer. If you did not think you were going to be able to make it during March or April, you now have and extended time to get there. Visiting the Center is a treat in itself. Having a related quilt show will be special. One of the quilts that will be exhibited is made by a lady who lived at the Internment Center during its existence. I recently read a book about the camp. It was very informative. Hyattville is having its annual quilt show, in conjunction with Cowboy Carnival, on Saturday afternoon and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. The purpose of this day is to help fund the newly renovated Community Center. There are many fun things going on, which could entertain your husband while you are at the Quilt Show. We are looking for quilts to hang as well as viewers to attend. Contact me at [email protected] for more information. Loose Threads (the Quilt Guild in the South Big Horn Basin) celebrated National Quilt Day with a Retreat that was held at the Greybull Senior Citizen Center. It is always well attended with lots of fun to be had. The next Quick's Quilt Retreat will be April 13-17 in Cody at the Holiday Inn. This non-directed UFO retreat is open to all quilters of all levels and interests. Come join us for fun and fabric! Contact Michelle for more information ([email protected]). A little birdie tells me that Michelle Quick's "Little White" has been juried into the AQS show in Paducah, April 19-23. As can be expected, she is a little excited. Vicki, from Friends and Company in Cody, has an exciting twoday embroidery weekend coming up on September 9th and 10th (Friday and Saturday). It is an Anita Gooddesign Embroidery Party, with Anita herself teaching it. It will be at the Holiday Inn in Cody. It is fun, organized, and very educational. Embroidery machines will be provided for all. See ad on Page 3 of this newsletter. Contact Vicki if you can't wait to hear more. will not be holding the quilt show – – this year (September 2016). We are going to try the “every other year” format so the next show will be in September 2017. Thank you, , Chairperson REGIONAL DIRECTORS SOUTHWEST Debbie Wolfe After a long winter, springtime brings renewed energy and inspiration to make more beautiful quilts and perhaps to try new techniques using that special ruler or thread bought at a quilt show. I am always looking for tips that will help me start and finish a project faster, especially UFOs that are begging to see daylight and to be used and loved. One tip that I often use eliminates the need to bury loose threads by hand. In summary, when starting to appliqué or quilt, bring the bobbin thread to the top of the quilt, take some tiny stitches in the first ¼”, cut off the tails, then continue stitching. End your stitching the same way. This technique secures the thread and eliminates the need to bury loose threads using those wonderful side threading needles. If you have a programmable domestic sewing machine, program in the tiny stitches and stitch away! I love using this method when sewing on my BabyLock. Upcoming quilting events in the SW Region: Quilting on the Green in Green River is June 3 and 4 in Green River. The 2nd Annual Quilting in the Winds in Pinedale will be October 20-23. See their facebook page for upcoming details. Becky Drnas is organizing the 5th Annual Hunters Widow Retreat in Rock Springs in October (dtbd). Quilt Guilds: Reminder: The WSQG SW Regional Director Position will open July 2016. If you are interested in holding this position, please contact Debbie Wolfe or April Pendleton. This position will be filled in July at the annual meeting in Powell at the end of Quilt Wyoming 2016. Inspirational quote from Inspired Creativity Cards: Go Crazy. Prepare to become addicted to fabric. It wouldn’t hurt to find a second source of income. Nancy Elliott McDonald Frontier Piecemakers Quilt Guild sponsored by the Kemmerer Frontier Arts Council is having their Annual Frontier Craft and Quilt Conference, sponsored by Frontier Arts Council on April 29th and 30th at the Events Center in Kemmerer, WY. For more information, contact Lois at 307-235-3185 or 307-877-5786 or see their facebook page. Sweetwater Piecemakers in Rock Springs: Members continue to work on their UFOs. Jeanne Allen completed a quilt in memory of a relative born in 1840. Nena James will be entering her Hanging Gardens quilt in the Home Machine Quilting Show in May. The Deadline to submit articles or advertisements for the June-July Patchwords is May 10, 2016 REGIONAL DIRECTORS NORTHEAST Valeria Finley Sherryl Buck It may be barely spring, but the itch to garden is beginning to appear, and I am not really much of a gardener! The Ucross Retreat did happen in January and the weather was great for quilting with a snow cover and very little sunshine. It did snow on Sunday and many of the quilters decided to head for home earlier than usual. Di did her usual great job of organizing with the STASH theme. The photos show Ellen Sparks concentrating on her work in her special Di-embroidered apron and Sherry Buck and Sarah Pugh clowning with the fun stash props. Sheridan’s mystery quilt day was another success even though our teacher Linda Hall wasn’t feeling well and went home early. The pattern was a real mystery, but turned out to be a complicated pinwheel. Mine is pieced and ready to quilt. Saturday, April 2 from 9 am to 4 pm at the American Legion at 200 Rockpile Blvd in Gillette. As I settle in to my responsibilities as one of the Northeast Regional Directors, I find that I want to visit other groups as often as possible. I want to meet as many of the Northeast region quilters as I can and make friends. If any of the groups out there would be open to a visit from me, please let me know through my e-mail [email protected]. Quilters come in as many patterns and designs as there are quilts and fabrics and I have only scratched the surface of this wonderful fellowship. Last month I mentioned that I found a quilt that my mother had started. Well, I got it out to decide just what was needed to finish it. My mother did not teach me to quilt, thank goodness. She never made a quarter inch seem, her corners and points rarely match. I fanaticized about picking the whole thing apart and resewing it lying awake one night. The next morning I realized that this project was not mine, but my mother’s and that I should honor her vision in what the quilt should be. While my mother’s techniques are very different from mine, I recognize her wonderful way of combining colors and her love of the sewing. So I have it put together and layered on a piece of fleece and am big-stitch hand quilting it. It will be a few months in process and then I hope to give it to one of my nieces, her younger granddaughter. My mother’s gift to me is the privilege of finishing her project and the desire to do so. I got my love of needlework from her and that keeps her alive in my heart. Last month I also mentioned that I have more baby quilts to make. The employee’s twin daughters were born and are 2+ months early. I have one top pieced (the mystery quilt pinwheel) and the other planned. I also have a plan for the quilt for the grandson (yes this one is a boy). I also have a quilt pieced for his soon to be six-year-old big brother. This will keep me going for awhile and I may get into the garden by May. And, no, I didn’t get any pink or red heart quilts pieced during February. I am getting antsy for QW16 in Powell . I’m looking forward to seeing many of you there. I was pleased to attend the Buffalo Quilting Gals February meeting on February 13. I learned a lot about this very dynamic group. This year is the group’s 20th anniversary! They are a very welcoming group and had yummy refreshments. Because the Johnson County Library is under construction, the group is not having their annual March quilt show. Instead, there will be an open house at the Senior Center on March 19 with some of the Gals bringing their pink ribbon quilts to work on during the day. A kid’s quilt camp is planned for two half days, June 22 and 23 for ages 9 to 14 or 15. The attendance is limited to 10 youngsters. The NEW (North East Wyoming) Quilt Show committee is busy planning and preparing our 34th annual quilt show scheduled the first weekend in October at the Camplex Energy Hall in Gillette, Wyoming. Last year’s show was a success with over 300 quilts, the addition of Relay for Life Cafe, and happy vendors. The Gals are also working on a western-themed quilt to be raffled on July 10 during Longmire Days. The proceeds will go to fund their Quilts of Valor. The program at the February 13 meeting was learning to construct a flying geese block using an Eleanor Burns method called a winged arrow. There were precut fabrics available for the members to piece for a Quilt of Valor while learning the technique. I loved my visit, seeing friends from other events and meeting new people. I received a fat quarter from their basket just because it was my birthday month. I hope to get back to another meeting in the next few months. Our raffle quilt, featuring the bear paw block in pink and green flannel, is almost ready for display and tickets are ready to sell. Sheridan’s Sisters of the Cloth are holding a National Quilting Day “Sew In” with the theme of “It Takes A Village” on March 19. It promises to be a great day to sew as well. Watch our Facebook page for an upcoming class on the Royal Cross block being planned for a Saturday in May. Gillette is hosting Open Sew Fun Days as fundraisers for the October quilt show. There was one on February 25 and the next one is We are also in the process of purchasing more quilt racks and have an All Day Fun Sewing event planned for Saturday, April 2 from 9 to 4 at the American Legion (hwy 14/16) to help support the purchase of these racks. The larger it is, the heavier it is and the more carefully it must be treated to make sure the weight doesn’t break quilting stitches. However, a heavily machine-quilted quilt is probably stronger than one with widely-spaced or hand-quilted lines of stitching. It’s best to air dry quilts flat. I lay a clean sheet over polyester or nylon carpet and then spread the quilt, squaring it up, blocking it. Here in Wyoming, even quilts with cotton batting are dry in a few hours. If necessary, set up a fan. reason we avoid using the dryer is to lessen wear and tear on the quilt. I think a stain from a bleeding fabric is worse. Line drying is very hard on a quilt, especially if it’s large and clothes-pinned. Stitching may break. However, a hard-used crib quilt will be just fine on a line. For other utility quilts, if you have multiple parallel clotheslines, you could spread a quilt out over all of them. Be sure to wash the lines or cover them with a sheet first. You may want to put a sheet over the quilt to protect it from passing birds. The first 10 parts of this series are available at www.GorgesQuiltLabels.com. It’s best to dry quilts flat on carpet protected by a sheet. But if I use the “max extract” Photo by Barb Gorges. option on my washing machine, the quilt is so compressed by the end that I opt to toss it in the dryer on very low heat or just air for 10 minutes to loosen it up and make it easier to spread. Some quilters will pop it in the dryer to fluff it before the quilt on the floor is completely dry. If any of the fabrics might bleed (you didn’t make the quilt or you didn’t take steps in Part 4 to check fabric washability), forget air drying—put the quilt in the dryer immediately, before the dyes have a chance to migrate.
