September issue - Jersey Shore Area School District

This Month
Message from the Editor
Okay so let’s all take a deep breath and
realize that we’re one month down and just
about 7 months to go until the end of this
school year. In this one month that’s
passed there have been many different
events and new worthy stories.
New teachers have decided to call the
high school home in various departments
including English and Phys Ed. Along with
this ‘new’ theme there have also been new
rules introduced to the school. They include the banning of Halloween costumes,
a change to the food policy and a new VIP
lunch system. And of course a new school
year means new students. The life of a
freshman can be tough but in this issue you
will get to see that it’s not so bad. And

speaking of new kids a few new students
from various grades have also shared some
insight into what it’s like to be new and also
about themselves. Not only do you get a
peek inside the life as a freshman or a new
student, the senior class has also shared
about life as top dogs and their future
plans.
In sports news the Bulldog football team
has started out with, what can only be assumed, an amazing season. Outside of
school both college and professional football has kicked off with many students and
teachers excited for a successful season for
their favorite teams.
Outside of just sports there have been
other important events. Presidential
campaigns for 2016 have started with many
different candidates beginning the race for
the most powerful position in the country.
Also in entertainment news, a horror movie
icon who has scared many viewers over the
years has sadly passed away.
All this and much more are inside this
issue of The Paw Print. As this years Editor
-In-Chief I hope you enjoy reading all the
different stories that students have worked
hard to write. The Paw Print staff hopes
that everyone has a successful and memorable year full of fun.

Aries (March 21- April 19)- The fifth moon of Mordor in your Jupiter house means today is the perfect
day to take advantage of celestial radiations that will settle in the third axis of Neptune’s house of air. Understand? Good, because it’s vitally important that you get that. Lives are at stake. Also, stop pretending to
understand things that you don’t. You think when you smile and nod that nobody can tell that you don’t know
what’s going on. Everybody can tell.
Taurus (April 20- May 20) - Something you ate yesterday was bad. Get ready for a rough few days.
Gemini (May 21- June 20) - Stop being so paranoid! Conspiracies are silly and almost never true. But if
you insist on worrying, wear a tie around your head for the next seven days and avoid the number 127. I
can’t really explain – it’s stars stuff. But trust me that will protect you.
Cancer (June 21- July 22) - Today you will find yourself in a very difficult or very fantastic position involving a family member or person who has a face
Leo (July 23- August 22)- Did you know that if you spill coffee on a white shirt, the best way to remove
the stain is to smother it with red wine and then pat it down with sugar crystals? Try it the next time you’re
trying to impress somebody.
Virgo (August 23- September 22) - Our childhood dreams of being famous have finally come true. A
photo of you has become a MAJOR viral meme in a small European country. I’m not going to tell you which
one. Happy searching.
Libra (September 23- October 22) - OMG! You know that barista who you’ve been making eyes with in
the mornings? The one who always puts a little smiley face next to your name because they obviously reciprocate your feelings of love? They’re part of an Internet group that believes the earth is flat. And they can’t
decide how they feel about vaccinations. So… Just sit with that for a while, I guess.
Scorpio (October 23- November 21) - If you see someone with a tie on their head, point at them and
scream out the number “127” in horror. Then run away quickly. I don’t have time to explain. Just do it.
Sagittarius (November 22- December 21) - This week, the air house in Saturn’s lunar rotation is going
to cause a major complication for your best friend’s mother’s cousin’s boss’ boyfriend. So maybe if you can
pass on a mess – Forget it. I’m going to be honest – I’m grasping at straws here. Not a lot is happening for
you this week, Sagittarius. Catch up on TV.
Capricorn (December 22- January 19) – There’s an old fable about a goat and a blind chicken walking
down a long and winding path in the woods. They come to a fork in the path, and argue about the virtues of
a life without bathwater. Then the goat goes home to eat cold raisin toast. Keep that in mind when faced
with the biggest decision of your life this week.
Aquarius (January 20- February 18) – The stars are telling me that you WILL travel this week. There
will definitely be some kind of journey from one place to another place. So, be ready for that.
Pisces (February 19- March 20) – Remember last week, when you said that next week was going to be
better but then this week came and it wasn’t actually better? You know where I’m at. That’s Jupiter’s fault. I
don’t know what to tell you – Jupiter is being a total Wang right now. But in the immortal words of Ernest
Hemingway: “Jupiter can eat my poo.”

Synthetic Marijuana: Just Not Worth It
By Harley Daugherty
I’m cheap, readily available at convenience stores nationwide, but I’m also leaving a trail of dead and severely injured teenagers in my wake. Who am I? I’m Synthetic
Marijuana, I’m very dangerous, and I like to be called “Spice” for short. I’m more popular
among young people, mostly high school students. Studies in 2012 found that I’m more
popular among young men than women. There’s about five active chemicals found in me,
but the DEA made them illegal to sell, buy, or possess.
But you should really know my effects on the human brain. You may know
things about my friend who is actual marijuana. Well, my effects can, in some cases, be
stronger than marijuana’s. Some report psychotic effects like extreme paranoia, anxiety and hallucinations. If you start to become
addicted to me you may experience vomiting, extreme agitation and psychotic episodes
and might even cause a heart attack.
Your principals and I had a little conversation about the consequences you may
face if you get caught with me in your possession in school. Let’s just say, it isn’t pretty.
There are no exceptions for having me or using me on school grounds. You will be punished with out of school suspension and referred to drug and alcohol assessment within
the next seven days after getting caught with me. You may even have to go to a board
hearing for expulsion. Could you honestly tell me which one of you would want to go
through all that? Just be smart about your decisions and don’t make me one of them. It’s
not worth it.

Ex-Broadcaster Kills Tw0 on Air
By Abigail Velez
Ex-broadcaster Vester Lee
Flanagan II killed reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward on live
television on Aug. 26. While filming a
segment for WDBJ at Bridgewater Plaza
in Moneta, Va., they were gunned down
by a hostile Flanagan, also known under
his reporting name Bryce Williams.
Flanagan entered the plaza with one
thing in his mind, and carrying out that
one thing to get revenge on the network
by taking out his anger, and rage on two
innocent people. He tried to sue the
company he had once worked for, for
about $25,000, expressing that he had
been discriminated against and sexually
harassed for being gay.
Flanagan expressed that watermelon
was left in ‘strategic’ locations around
the office, as a mockery of his color. Also
he said that other offensive comments
were made in his presence. There were
many confrontations, and a couple arguments. He blamed the news station for
his animals’ deaths, after he confessed
to killing them.
Amber Brown, a friend of the family
who went to high school with Flanagan,
apologized for the killings on behalf of
the family, during a press conference.
She stated, “We are praying or the recovery of Vicki Gardner. Our thoughts
and prayers at this time are with the
victims’ family and the WDBJ television
station family.”
They were in the midst of interviewing Vicki Garder, who is from the local chamber of commerce. They were discussing the
upcoming 50th anniversary festivities for the Smith Mountain Lake. It is stated that Flanagan came up from behind the group, and
shot once at camera man Adam Ward, and struck him, and then once more which put him on his knees. Alison Parker, news reporter,
tried to flee but then Flanagan gunned her down. Both Ward and Parker died at the scene. Gardner was then rushed to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery.
The camera was rolling live while this event was occurring. The WDBJ station cut the live feed while it was in the middle of
being shown to the viewers. The crew back at the station stated that they were trying to figure out what the noises were in the background, saying that they believed it was a car backfiring. Ward was engaged to a
news producer at the same station, Melissa Ott, who was watching the event unfold
from the control room. Parker was in a relationship with another news anchor
from the station. Many of the crew workers at WDBJ feared that after Flanagan
was fired, that he would try to harm some of his ex-co-workers.
Flanagan carried with him a mobile phone, recording the incidents in his
perspective as they went on. He uploaded the videos onto twitter, using twitter to
explain his reasons for the attack, then he faxed a 23 page suicide note to ABC
news outlining the attack he had been planning. He then escaped the scene in a
Chevrolet Sonic, which helped him flee hundreds of miles down interstate 81.
Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle but Flanagan refused. He then only drove
about maybe two miles before swerving off the road. They found him with selfinflicted gunshot wound, and was airlifted to Fairfax Inova Hospital. He then died
round 1:30 a.m. Meanwhile, those left behind are trying to put their lives back together without their loved ones.
“He was an incredible person, a great journalist and would have been a
great father and husband,” Ott stated about Ward.
“We didn’t share this publicly, but [Alison] and I were very much in love.
We just moved in together. I am numb,” Parker’s boyfriend Chris Hurst said. Both
journalists will be deeply missed, and will leave a great legacy behind.

Halloween Costumes
By Dayna Beitz
Halloween is the only time of the year that students can
come to school and be dressed up and not get in trouble. Not anymore, Jersey Shore High School have banned students from dressing up this year.
“It’s such a shame that elementary school kids can’t dress
up and express themselves in such a fun way,” said Dayanaira
Watson (9).
Next, Bryana Tebbs (9) expressed her opinion, “I loved
being able to dress up, last year I was a cow. It’s unfair that we
can’t dress up anymore.”
Principal Mr. Reed Mellinger stated, “We didn’t want to
take away from the education of the students especially the elementary students. It was too much of an unsafe environment and
too much of a mess with face paint. Some people dressed inappropriately and it’s either we all dress up or we don’t instead of telling
certain people if they can or cannot dress up. If a club wants to
host a dance where you can dress up and come to school in the
evening that would be okay.”
The school ban of costumes may not be such a big deal as we thought, the ban is actually for
us to get more out of our education without a big distraction.
Death of a Legend
By Tiffani Burkhart
Imagine a little girl with her
head buried in a pillow in fright. That
little girl was me when I first watched
A Nightmare on Elm Street. I can still
remember vividly how terrifying the
nightmares were that plagued me night
after night. My brother went as far as
dressing up like Freddy and chasing
me around the yard at night. Never had
I been so scared and I have the late
Wes Craven to thank for that.
Wes Craven has produced,
written, and directed an enormous
amount of amazing movies. Some movies are a cult phenomenon, such movies as Scream, The Hills Have Eyes,
One of his most iconic horror movies was
and The Last House on the Left.
‘Scream’ in 1996
My personal favorite that Wes has
done was the film Scream. Scream
makes fun of the traditional horror movies. The
reason why Scream stands out to me is because
of how something like that could actually happen. Anyone could dress up in a mask and go
around and kill people.
Sadly Wes Craven passed away on Aug. 30 because of brain cancer; he was 73 years old.
I know for a fact that I am going to miss Wes Craven deeply because he truly was a legend
of horror movies.

Mr. Palumbo Joins English, History Staff
By Brandon Ranck
Mr. Jonathon Palumbo is new this year to the English and
Social Studies departments.
Mr. Palumbo completed his undergraduate studies in 2011 from
Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, and his graduate studies from
Arcadia University in 2014. Before being recently employed by the
Jersey Shore Area School District, Palumbo student taught at Towanda
High School, and worked as a teacher for four years at a middle school
outside of Philadelphia. Palumbo’s first job ever was lifeguarding, his
favorite color is red, and his favorite animal is a kangaroo.
“Teaching here is great, I came from a different school in
Philadelphia. I definitely enjoy it much more than my previous teaching job already, it’s a ‘homey’ environment. The students and staff all
get along well together, and overall, it’s a very welcoming district.”
Palumbo said.
Mr. Palumbo enjoys teaching very much. “I like that everyday
is something new, whether you’ve done it for three years or thirty
years, you don’t teach the same thing over and over, it changes
throughout time, and obviously for the students, I do it for the students, that’s why I’m here,” Palumbo said.
Mr. Palumbo chose to teach here at the perfect time. “I’m
closer to my hometown, I was always specifically looking for a world
history job, and they had one open, so I hopped on board to teach my
favorite subject.”
We here at the Paw Print hope that Mr. Palumbo enjoys
teaching here at the high school and wish him a great year.
Mr. Palumbo teaches for both the English and history
departments
Welcome Back, Mr. Miller
By Bella Cappellini
Welcoming all the new teachers can be easier
if you know more about them, like Mr. Jeffrey Miller.
He is now in Mrs. Zimmerman’s old room (she
retired last year) and teaches some of the classes that
she had. Mr. Miller has actually worked in the senior
high school previously. Many don’t know this, though
some teachers might.
He worked here from 2006-2012, then taught
at Susquehanna House and at the middle school, so
many of us have never even seen him before. Mr. Miller
enthusiastically teaches Personal Finance and Business
Math.
He says that he likes the high school very
much and enjoys it. He has already been teaching for a
whopping 11 years. He even went to high school here.
For college, he attended Penn State University, so those
looking for a teaching career, there’s an option for you.

Mrs. Sweitzer Added to Science Department
By Brandon Ranck
She has traveled all over the U.S. and now calls
Jersey Shore home. Mrs. Tricia Sweitzer is new this year
to the science department.
Mrs. Sweitzer attended Western State College in
Colorado, Seward County College in Kansas, University of
New Orleans, and Lock Haven University. She obtained a
bachelor of arts degree in biology, and a bachelor of science degree in education.
Before being employed by the Jersey Shore Area
School District, she taught at Saint Benard Perish in Louisiana for one year, teaching math and science, and a half
of a year teaching AP honors biology in Liberal, Kansas.
Her first ever job was a waitress, her favorite
color is purple, and her favorite animal is a dog.
“Teaching is new every day. I love the kids! That’s
really why I wanted to teach,” she said.
Mrs. Sweitzer found interest in working for the
Jersey Shore Area School District when she worked with
students in Mrs. Stephanie Machmer’s class.
“I student taught here with Mrs. Machmer, and I absolutely loved it!” she said.
Now that she teaches here she loves her job as a
science teacher.
Mrs. Hess Moves to Senior High
By Kyle Toner
Mr. and Mrs. Hess are excited to work
together this school year
Another new teacher that has been added here is Mrs. Patricia Hess. She replaced Mrs. Sandy Koleno as a Phys. Ed and Health teacher. This is her first year
teaching here at the high school.
Mrs. Hess got her undergraduate degree at Lock Haven University. While
attending there she did a semester abroad in Liverpool. She then got the rest of her
degree at Wilkes University. Mrs. Hess has been teaching for 19 yrs. She got her first
teaching job at McCall Middle School in Montoursville. She taught there for 7 yrs. She
has also taught at all of the elementary schools in our district. She has taught at them
for 12 yrs.
Mrs. Hess said, “I’m looking forward to teaching new topics and getting to
know new students.”
Mrs. Hess also answered the big question that most students have for her.
“I’m going to be doing the eggs this year. I’m not doing the baby,” Mrs. Hess said about
the child care project every 11th grade student has to do. Mrs. Hess is looking forward
to teaching alongside her husband this year.
“We see each other more at school then at home,” said Mrs. Hess. They both
agreed that they work really well together and can help each other out. Overall Mrs.
Hess is looking forward to a great year here at Jersey Shore Area High School.

Mrs. Bierly
By Laura Jameson
She is always in a good mood when you see her and she absolutely loves
the sciences … except chemistry. This month’s teacher of the month is Mrs. Raye
Bierly. She has been teaching here at Jersey Shore for 26 years and has loved every
moment of it. She started out substituting for her first two years and then for the
last 24 years she has been teaching full time here.
She teaches Anatomy and Physiology, Biology , and Botany. When asked
which one she likes the most she said, “I like them all; they’re fun.”
The thing that she loves most about teaching is her students. “Kids are
cool,” she simply said for her reason.
Teaching as long as Mrs. Bierly has, she has managed to be involved in
some pretty embarrassing moments and also ones that are really funny.
Her most embarrassing moment was when she realized she had broccoli
in her front teeth and no one had told her. She laughed about it not being quite as
embarrassed about it anymore.
As for her funny moment there really are too many for her to recount. “I
excel at making a fool of myself so any moment could be a funny one,” she said.
Before teaching here at Jersey Shore she was a Medical Technician. She
said it gave her a good perspective on life.
It was at Lycoming College where she got her degree in Biology to start
her pathway to being a medical technician. After getting her degree she spent 12
months as an intern at Divine Providence Hospital. After her internship she got
her certificate to become a medical technician and started her work in a lab. After
working in that field for a time, she went back to Lycoming College to earn her
teaching degree and soon found her way to Jersey Shore High School.
Mrs. Raye Bierly (above) poses for a photo.
Being a medical technician before teaching is not the only interesting
(Below) This is Mrs. Bierly’s favorite place to
thing about her. Mrs. Bierly also owns three goats which she loves very dearly.
be over the summer
Outside of school Mrs. Bierly enjoys gardening, reading, walking in the
woods around her home, baking and of course eating!
Her favorite sports are a tie between football and soccer and her favorite
book is To Kill a Mockingbird. That book opened her eyes to a lot of real world
issues with race and bigotry.
Her favorite actress is Judi Dench and her favorite color is blue.
Another favorite thing of hers is something she does at the end of every
school year. She makes
special awards for students that pertain to
them. For example one
could be Biology is Life
or the Hap-hap-Happy
Award. Each award is
very special and she even
makes them herself.
Although she
loves teaching so very
much if she could be anything else she said she would be an architect. “I like
to design floor plans and look at houses,” she said. Home design is something
that has intrigued her.
Mrs. Bierly’s advice for students is one that really works not only in
school but the world. “Get used to doing things you don’t like to do,” she said,
“because it’s not going to go away.”
Good advice from a very enthusiastic science teacher. So next time
Her goat Prudence and her dog Megan hang out you see Mrs. Bierly in the hallways ask her about her hobbies or maybe about
her three goats.

A Look Back at September...

It’s Wednesday finally! Almost done
with the week! Today during our VIP homerooms they have us jumping out of buses. Yes,
it’s that time again, bus evacuation drills! The
normal beginning of the year drills, to ensure we
know what to do if something happens. Actually
a lot has changed since the year before. We are
no longer allowed to jump out the back of a bus;
we all have to walk out of the main doors in an
organized fashion. It takes about ten minutes,
and then we are done, quite a bland thing actually, but it gets the
job done! Until next time!! Have a great day!

Thursday! One more day until Friday! Thank heavens!
Today during the VIP homeroom period we are going to have a
fire drill. I am pretty sure this is one of the students’ favorite
drills! We all get to go outside to the parking lot, and after we
check in with our teachers we get to see everyone! The whole
school is outside. It’s a great time to talk to our friends, and it lets
the faculty and staff do the procedure. Well it’s blazing hot in the
school. Nothing new, but while we all die of heat exhaustion, we
are learning. Something good about the school! Until next time!!

Welcome, Freshmen
By Jessica McClellan
Being a freshman is a big deal - a new school, new people, and new teachers. But most of all, a new you. You
change more than anything else, but you don’t need to because it’s just high school. First, the first day is exciting,
scary, nerve wracking and all the things around it. But the
most exciting thing is being in a new territory and having a
new beginning. What I’ve learned so far is that it’s not that
much different from middle school. Yes, there are new people and everything, but think, being a freshman gets you so
excited, nervous, and you just go crazy. You may think that
you need to change yourself too, but that’s not the case.
Don’t change because of the other people and a new school;
just be yourself and all will go well.
Some students said that the move to the high school has
not been bad.

tional activities (below).
Others admit to missing their middle school experience.
Caley Anderson (9) said, “Yes, I miss middle school because I miss the teachers and projects.”
Surviving freshman year is definitely possible. Upperclassmen offer advice – and they should know since they,
too, were once freshmen.
Melanie Steinbacher (10) said, “It’s not as scary as you
think. Just stay to your side of the hallway and don’t get in
the upper-classmen’s way.”
Okay, let’s get real, upper-classmen are scary, right? Well
that’s just something you have to deal with. In middle
school being an 8th grader is amazing, and you think you are
top dog. Then you come to high school and it’s all over.
Don’t worry – everyone here was once a freshman, and you
won’t be a freshman forever. After all, it’s just high school.

Big Changes for VIP Lunch
New Rule: No Outside Food
Either you love it or hate it. The
new VIP lunch change has affected a lot of
people. Most people have some very negative opinions about it. If you aren’t one of
them you have already heard the complaints from students and on occasion
teachers as well.
Alexis Hill (12) and Alexie Hurlbutt (12) both agree that the new lunch is
stupid. “The time frame and amount of
food,” is a big issue for Alexis. For Lexi she
just does not like that fact that there is not
enough time to see people.
Montana Bilbay (12) also agrees
with these two, saying that it is a “brilliant
waste of time.”
“We no longer have time to manage our studies,” she said, “Orange lunch is
bigger than black lunch so we run out of
food. We are not provided an accurate 30
minutes to eat because it takes longer to get
through the line.”
Olivia Hauser (12) was one of the
New school year, new students, teachers and rules, and this year, there is a
new rule about sharing food.
According to the official announcement on the school district website, “All food that
will be shared with or given to students must be arranged through The Nutrition
Group. The Nutrition Group is the food service provider for the district and a menu of
the items they offer can be found on our website.”
What this means is that students will no longer be able to bring snacks to share with
their friends in class. Instead, the food that will be shared must be purchased through
the cafeteria.
only students who doesn’t have a problem
with the new lunch system.
“It’s fine,” she said, “Better than it
was.” The thing that she enjoys the most
about it is that students are much more
mature about things.
Mrs. Tammy Haltenhoff likes the
new lunch system but maybe not for the
reason you would think.
“I eat orange lunch,” she said about her
reason, “snd I only have three classes af-
ter.” She does believe though that it was a
good thing to do and students have been
acting better since it started this year.
For everyone who isn’t thrilled
about this new system there is still hope. If
everyone keeps acting like adults and
proves that they can handle having an hour
lunch then it can go back to the way it had
been before, the principals said at the beginning of the year.

Fantastic Four: New and Popular
By Bella Cappellini
This year, Marvel is bringing on the POW. They are releasing many movies in a series of
phases. These phases lead up to the release of the two-part Marvel Infinity War. But for now, we
wait and watch the Marvel movies coming out now and soon. The latest one out is Fantastic
Four. This movie happens to be a reprise of the two movies several years ago starring Jessica
Alba, Chris Evans, and more.
With this reprise, they take on the antagonist in a different way. The graphics were much
better, but the storyline and box office didn’t make much of anything. The movie was anticipated, but seemed like a let-down. The fight scene in the movie only lasted about 10 minutes,
which was anti-climactic to me. This movie was a good edition overall, but it wasn’t as powerful
and box office breaking as many other Marvel movies.
Hopefully, with the release of the upcoming movies, they will make a come-back from the not
so greatly achieved movie. Don’t get me wrong, the movie wasn’t as terrible as it sounds. It was
pretty good, but it could have been better. My hopes for the newer movies are very high, and I
will continue to go watch them in theatres. Marvel movies have really packed punches before;
this time they just missed. I have high hopes they will hit it right on the mark next time.
Transgender, a New Approach to Life

The stars of these

Summer Memories
By Tyler Rae Laub
Now that school’s back in session, let’s reminisce on all the fun that you and the students here at Jersey Shore High School had this
summer.
Mikayla Kehoe (10) said, “I went to Virginia Beach with my family and learned how to snorkel. While I was there I also walked the
boardwalk and rode some rides, it was really fun.” She also went on to say, “I worked at Little League with friends, and it was hard
work.”
Virginia Beach was a popular vacation spot for students. Austin
Robinson (10) also spent time there this summer.
He said, “During mid August I went to Virginia Beach and did a
lot of swimming there and at my river lot. I also went parasailing for
the first time 1000 feet up; it was an awesome experience!”
Some of us chose to go a different route this summer and relax
inside with some air-conditioning. “The best thing I did over the
summer was lay in bed and watch Netflix” said Julia Rockwell (11).
While most of us stayed in the country, others ventured out and
explored this summer. Maddi Laubscher (10) said, “Over the summer I went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic during late
July. I relaxed on the beach, went scuba diving and shopped at some
local straw markets. It was really fun and the culture is so unique
down there!”
Mr. Harvey Barnhart said, “I went hiking up Pine Creek a lot. I
also went to a concert in Hershey and saw Jason Aldean, Cole Swindell, Tyler Farr and other artists. But I mostly just did construction
work around my house, rode my motorcycle, and relaxed.
“I went to Ocean City, Md., and went dolphin watching,” said
Emma Stevens (10). “I also just relaxed on the beach and went on a
haunted tour in Berlin, Md. I got to tour a haunted hotel and a graveyard and got to learn some of Berlin’s history.”
This summer held many good memories for students and teachers at Jersey Shore High School. Hopefully next year will be just as
exciting as this one’s!
Goodbye Summer, Hello School
By Faith Leathers
Ahhhh, summer; the time for relaxing, sleeping
in, swimming, and hanging out with friends. But, it only
lasts for 77 days at the least. Then, in a blink of an eye,
it's already time for the next school year to begin. Many
dread it, and others get excited.
Ashley Ingraham (11) said, “Summer seems to
always go by way too fast. I wish we could have a longer,
more eventful vacation from school.”
Each school year always brings new opportunities, new students/staff, and new rules to follow. Some
changes for this school year at Jersey Shore High School
include the new VIP homeroom, some new teachers, and
the one everyone has been talking about...the new lunch
schedule.
“I'm most excited for seeing friends that I didn't
get the chance to see during the summer” Katrina Kehoe
(11) said.
Even though the school year started a couple
weeks ago, it already seems to be going by more quickly
than the last two years.
“It doesn't feel like the third week of school. But
I like that it's going by fast” Blake Boyer (9) said.
Just because it may feel like the school year is
just slipping through your fingers, don't just try and get
your way through classes by not thinking they are important. Do your work, and make each day count.

Jersey Shore Boys Soccer
By Aaron Hennigan
The soccer season has just started for Jersey Shore as they look to have another
great season this year. This season will be very difficult for the boys as they try to
get a spot in districts, but they will be faced against older and more experienced
teams. This challenge will give the team the motivation to push themselves more
and prove that they deserve a shot with the big teams. The team will be led by three
captains: Connor Anderson (11), Jacob Butzler (11), and Joel Martin (11).
Last season the soccer team was the only team in Jersey Shore soccer history to
win a district game. But since the team lost 11 players because of graduation, positions have opened up to many players. Head coach Cole Black said, “This year will
be difficult, but very manageable with these young but experienced players.”
This shows the team has confidence in their players and coaching staff. Also
former player for the Jersey Shore soccer team, Carter Kauffman, will be back to be
an assistant coach for the team. This brings an old and new perspective for the
players to see.
So far in the boys’ first five game they are (2-3) having both wins in away games.
This shows that the team can have a good start to winning ways.
“We have more heart than any other team in our conference,” said Darin Thomas (11). This is seen at the games as opposing teams benches just sit and watch the
game while the Jersey Shore bench shows enthusiasm and support for the players
on the field.
We’ll have to wait and see how the season goes for the soccer team. They are
being tested by good and strong teams. But with the new coaching staff and players
helping the team move forward, this season has the promise to be a good year for
Jersey Shore soccer.

Athlete of the Month
Excelling On and Off the Field
By Calvin Lesser
Bryce Charles is September’s Athlete of the
Month. Bryce plays football, and he also wrestles.
Bryce has played football for 10 years, wrestled for
three years, and also ran track for three years.
Bryce said the reason for him playing more
than one sport is because he likes to compete. Bryce
said the hardest part about being a two-sport athlete is
balancing the school work.
Although he excels in all three sports, he has
earned top honors for his efforts on the football field.
Some accomplishments that Bryce has received are 1st
team all-state nose guard, 2nd time 1st team allconference nose guard, and most tackles for a loss by a
defensive linemen. Also, he set the freshman shotput
record as a ninth grader.
Bryce said his favorite coach is Coach Lundy.
“He’s the real OG,” he said. The person he looks up to
is Odell Beckham Jr., a wide receiver for the New York
Giants.
He was glad to share some advice for the underclassmen. “Stay low, use your hands, and don’t spin

college. Good luck, Bryce!

The athlete Taylor looks up to is Serena Williams because “she’s a beast.”
She encourages students to try tennis because
“it’s a lifelong sport and is fun to play.”
After high school she plans to attend Penn

knees and turn your shoulders,” (wise words from
Coach Sheddy).
