Fresh from playing the lead in Fat Tony & Co, Robert Mammone will play a homeless man
who is confronted by a malevolent presence on a late-night commuter train in Bunny.
The supernatural thriller is due to start shooting in Sydney in May, the feature directing
debut of US screenwriter Peter Schink, who wrote and was associate producer on the 2010
pic Legion, which starred Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid.
Mammone, who came back last week after playing a Greek general in Russell Crowe’s The
Water Diviner, will also serve as an executive producer on Bunny.
The plot revolves around a group of strangers on the train who find the body of a young
junkie. The original idea came from Sydney-based, US producer Jeff Wannberg, who
regularly commutes to and from Sydney late at night.
“Jeff pitched it to me as The Conjuring on a train,” Schink told IF on the line from the US.
He co-wrote the screenplay with Kade Robinson.
Aussie Troy Planet is producing with Wannberg. Schink said Mammone got involved via his
friend Planet and all four had been developing the project for the past two and a half years.
The other cast is yet to be an announced but all will be Australian. Among the other
characters are a Greek Australian, an Indian Australian and a Torres Strait Islander.
Mammone told IF that his work off-camera on Bunny has given him a new appreciation of
the role of the producer. "It's no easy street," he said. Originally he intended to take the
larger part of another character but decided to play Bosco "as a more controlled role which
also gives me more scope as an actor."
He added, "With Peter Schink at the helm, a talented young ensemble cast and a kick ass
script, we can't wait to begin filming.”
The DoP is Joseph Pickering (Fat Tony & Co, Janet King, Serangoon Road) and Peta
Einberg is responsible for casting. Mammone and Brigham Glaser are the EPs. It will be a
four-week shoot on the set of a train at disused railyards.
The actor had a great time in Australia and Turkey shooting The Water Diviner with Crowe,
a mate since they made The Crossing in 1989 and Heaven's Burning in the mid-1990s.
His character is among a group of Greek soldiers who went on a rape-and-pillage spree
through Turkey to try to reclaim land which they claimed was stolen by the Turks from
Greece 450 years earlier.
Observing Crowe first-hand as a director, Mammone said, "He's really impressive, clear,
concise and calm. He gets the best out of everyone." Mammone has ambitions to direct
but has not yet settled on a project.

Joel Silverman will adapt Susan

Envision Media Arts has secured the rights to Keith Ray Putnam’s action-horror spec script “Red

“Red Ice” follows a trucker hauling emergency supplies across the frozen waterways of arctic
Canada who must survive an onslaught of mysterious, man-eating creatures.
“The ice roads have always been an intriguing, dangerous setting,” said EMA president David
Buelow. “Keith’s script puts a very visceral, smart spin on the genre.”

‘Boondock Saints’ Troy Duffy Resurfaces With Series
And Film Deals
By MIKE FLEMING JR Tuesday December 10, 2013 @ 10:39am PST
EXCLUSIVE: Writer/director Troy Duffy, most
famous for making a big Boondock Saints spec
deal with Harvey Weinstein that was supposed to
include purchase of the LA bar where Duffy
poured drinks, is back in the mix with deals for
both film and TV projects. On the small screen, Duffy has
teamed with producers Jimmy Miller and Sam Hansen and set
up Kingdom Come with Sony Television. The proposed series
focuses on Capt. Jean Lafitte, the early 19th Century pirate who
built the largest smuggling operation on U.S. soil and controlled
New Orleans and all the goods that traveled the Mississippi
River. He went from outlaw to patriot when he and his crew
defended New Orleans against the British in the War of 1812, for which he and his pirate
cohorts received full pardons for past misdeeds, but were whitewashed from history by
Andrew Jackson.
Duffy also made a deal with Voltage Pictures to write and direct The Blood Spoon Council,
a thriller about a vigilante group led by an eccentric mastermind prolifer that hunts, captures
and disposes of serial killers. This will be the first film that Duffy has directed since the
Boondock Saints sequel in 2009. Even though the bar deal with Weinstein fell apart over
creative disagreements, the first movie–which starred Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus and
Sean Patrick Flanery as Irish vigilantes–got financed by Elie Samaha. The ultra-violent
shoot em up then had the bad fortune to reach theaters right after the Columbine High
School massacre, and grossed just $30,471.

12/10/13 12:30 PM
Now, this is just one of the difficult spots in what has
been a long journey for Duffy to get to the point where
he’s got two solid projects with major companies. He
tells me that despite the paltry performance in theaters,
Boondock Saints eventually made staggering sums on
home video, though laying hands on it was another
story. “Hollywood backed off anything with youthful
violence after Columbine, and we were informed by a buyer that our film was blacklisted
from U.S. theater screens,” Duffy said. “After doing all that work, we were torpedoed and
everyone slipped into a depression. Then kids found the movie within six months, when it
became a Blockbuster exclusive selection and went on to become the number one straight
to video highest grossing rental of 2001. Unfortunately, we had made the movie with
Franchise’s Elie Samaha, and the whole company went bust.”
Duffy might have wanted to have passed the bar instead of pouring drinks from one, for all
the lawyer fees he and Brinker paid out. “We sued Comerica Bank, which financed the film,
and another outfit, Spartan Home Entertainment, which released it. It became a massive
lawsuit.” What saved Duffy and Brinker was they, almost by accident, held onto
merchandising rights which became a gold mine. “The only reason we had them was,
nobody saw any value in them,” he said. “We began selling t-shirts, scripts, posters on a
website, and we made big money we shoveled right back into the lawsuit which took six
years to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum.” While he cannot reveal that number,
his description of the film’s vid business is staggering. “Boondock did well over $100 million
globally, and it still does 1 million units a year in the U.S. It’s one of those things that works
as a stocking stuffer, on St. Patrick’s Day. I really can’t explain it. It’s like the Rocky Horror
Picture Show or The Big Lebowski, movies that built this weird fanaticism around them.”The
lawsuit also allowed them to make a Boondock sequel, which he said didn’t get a lot of love
from Sony; the film never got past the platform stage, but grossed $11 million though it
never got past 600 screens.

12/10/13 12:30 PM
As he and Brinker were getting ready to turn the page,
the latter died at age 42 from an aortic aneurysm on
the last day of shooting his directing debut Bad
Country. This happened last February. Despite all the
adversity, Duffy said he is excited by the opportunities
provided by the new projects. He’s working on the film
with Voltage’s Nicolas Chartier, Zev Foreman and
Dominic Rustam, with Chartier calling the serial killer pic “an ideal film to follow up
Boondock Saints…we believe Troy will turn it into a film that can be a defining
psychological thriller for this generation in the vein of Silence Of The Lambs and Se7en. On
the series project he’s writing, Duffy told me: “Lafitte saved the U.S. and was whitewashed
from history,” he said. “Pound for pound the biggest gangster, clearing one million dollars a
month smuggling contraband into the U.S. Then the British invade, wanting to take back
what they’d lost in the Revolutionary War, and if they took New Orleans they had us. Lafitte
teams with Andrew Jackson, helps the Army win that battle that sends the British home.
Jackson then runs for president on the ‘I saved the U.S. platform, and could not lay the
victory on the doorstep of an infamous pirate. It’s our Braveheart, in a way.”
As for his bid to own a bar, Duffy said he still wants one. He staked some ex-cop buddies
when they opened a watering hole in New Orleans, and now he’s ready to look for a place
of his own in Los Angeles. He’s repped by Jordan Bayer of Original Artists and attorney
Stephen Clark.

‘Ink And Bone’ Tops 2013 Blood List – The Black List
For Genre Scripts
By JEN YAMATO Thursday October 31, 2013 @ 10:30am PDT
EXCLUSIVE: Franklin Leonard’s Black List has become a buzzy
barometer for promising screenplays, but here’s a genre-centric
version of the script service suited for the spooky season. The
Blood List names the 13 best unproduced horror, thriller, and scifi scripts of the October-to-October calendar year as voted on by
more than 100 film execs. This year’s #1 pick: Ink and Bone, Zak
Olkewicz’s horror spec about a writer held hostage by his own
creations that Dimension snapped up earlier this year.
Independent manager/producer Kailey Marsh runs the annual
Blood List, which has no affiliation with the more mainstreamleaning Black List but in its fifth year is turning out more and more high-profile alums. 2012
Blood List topper The Disciple Program landed at Universal with Mark Wahlberg attached
to star for Morten Tyldum, while Barbara Curry’s 2011 selection The Boy Next Door is in
production under the Blumhouse banner with Jennifer Lopez starring.
The 2013 edition was voted on by 108 feature execs, each of whom chose their top three
favorite genre screenplays. Seventy-seven of them earned votes, with screenplays
requiring a minimum of four votes in order to make the final cut. The 2013 class is
announced, as it has been for four years, on Halloween:

Fox Buys Conspiracy Thriller From Drew Chapman,
Drama From Michael Horowitz
By NELLIE ANDREEVA Tuesday October 29, 2013 @ 4:26pm PDT
TV and film writer Drew (formerly Andrew) Chapman
is set to adapt his upcoming first novel, The
Ascendant, as a drama series for Fox through 20th
Century Fox TV. In the vein of Three Days of the
Condor, The Ascendant is described as a modern,
subversive take on the white-knuckle thriller. It centers on Garrett
Reilly, a 26-year-old NYC bond trader and financial wunderkind
who recognizes a huge U.S. Treasury bond
selloff and an opportunity to become incredibly
rich but stumbles upon something much larger
— and scarier: the first attack in a covert war of unthinkable
proportions. The novel – which will be published by Simon & Schuster
in January with a big initial print run of 75,000 — is envisioned as a
franchise, with Chapman already writing the second book. In TV, Chapman, repped by

penned the ABC pilot A House Divided.

Cannibals, Hallucinogens Help
Chilean Pics Gain Traction in
English
SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 | 12:00PM PT
Horrormeister Eli Roth partners on Chilewood
venture
Anna Marie de la Fuente (http://variety.com/author/annamarie-de-la-fuente/)
In Chile (http://variety.com/t/chile/), as in much of the world, English is
becoming the lingua franca among a growing number of filmmakers, as
arthouse and genre helmers alike make it the primary language in films
targeted to play beyond the country’s tiny film market.

SEE MORE: From the September 24, 2013 issue of Variety
(http://variety.com/print-issues/321-7-september-24-2013/)
The trend comes at a time when Chilean pics have been gaining
recognition on the fest circuit: This year, Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria” played
in competition at Berlin and picked up three awards; it reps Chile in the
foreign-language Oscar race. (Last year, Pablo Larrain’s “No” grabbed a
foreign-language Oscar nom.)
And at this year’s Sundance, Sebastian Silva took home the directing
award for his hallucinogenic drug-fueled romp “Crystal Fairy,” following his
Grand Jury Prize for “The Maid” in 2009.
Jirafa Films’ founder Bruno Bettati notes that the move to English is
especially strong “among directors who have made more than three films
and have already gained some international recognition.”
Silva, now a Brooklyn resident, is prepping his next project, “Nasty Baby,”
starring Kristen Wiig. “Crystal Fairy” is mainly in English, while his other
Sundance 2013 entry, “Magic, Magic” (pictured) is in both English and
Spanish. Both star Michael Cera.
Nicolas Lopez, who has established a partnership he has dubbed
Chilewood (http://variety.com/t/chilewood/) with Eli Roth
(http://variety.com/t/eli-roth/), helmed earthquake thriller “Aftershock” — set
in Chile and in English and Spanish — and is tipped to direct the sequel to
Roth’s cannibal horror pic “The Green Inferno.” Both pics were lensed
mostly in Chile at a fraction of what they would have cost if they had been
made in the U.S.
“We shot ‘Aftershock’ for $2 million, but it looked like a $10 million movie,”
Lopez maintains. Chilewood aims to produce local pics with budgets of no
less than $500,000 and international mainstream pics for no less than $10

million, he adds.
Even Chile’s pioneering horrormeister Jorge Olguin has made the
country’s first 3D pic, “Whispers of the Forest,” mainly in English. Now in
post, the fantasy pic cost a paltry $500,000 despite the use of 3D cameras.
While English-lingo horror sells well in the international marketplace,
arthouse helmers also are adopting the tongue. Cristian Jimenez
(“Bonsai,” which preemed at Cannes 2011), and Gonzalo Justiniano (“BHappy” and “Have You Seen Lupita?”) are prepping pics in English. Even
wildly popular mimic/standup comedian Stefan Kramer, whose broad
comedy “Stefan vs. Kramer” was Chile’s biggest blockbuster, is mulling a
fish-out-of-water story set in Miami after Fox releases his next comedy, “El
Ciudadano Kramer,” in December.
Indeed, with the growing push to grab international sales, worldwide
mainstream audiences and festival accolades, a new generation of Chilean
filmmakers has its eyes on the global prize. And it’s an easy concept to
translate.

A Seven-Hour Documentary About a Horror Franchise? The Director Explains - NYTimes.com

A Seven-Hour Documentary About a Horror Franchise? The Director Explains
By ERIK PIEPENBURG
It takes almost 10 hours to watch the landmark Holocaust documentary “Shoah.” If you have 24
hours to spare you can spend it with Christian Marclay’s movie-clip art film “The Clock.” Now
horror fans have their own chance for marathon movie-watching with the release of “Crystal
Lake Memories,” a seven-hour documentary about the highly successful “Friday the 13th”
franchise.
Named after the idyllic camp where randy teenagers met bloody fates, the documentary features
interviews with some 150 cast and crew members from the dozen “Friday the 13th” films and the
syndicated television series that ran from 1987 to 1990. (The documentary was released this
month, of course, on Friday the 13th.) The original “Friday the 13th,” directed by Sean
Cunningham for about $550,000, was a surprise hit when it opened in 1980, grossing more
than $39.7 million. The films collectively have become one of the most profitable movie
franchises thanks in large part to its central villain, Jason Voorhees. Like the lead character’s
disguise in the Broadway musical “The Phantom of the Opera,” Jason’s hockey mask has entered
the top tier of pop-culture iconography.
“Jason is this iconic symbol of evil that has gone from generation to generation,” said Daniel
Farrands, who wrote and directed “Crystal Lake Memories.”
And the killing might not be over. Corey Feldman, who narrates “Crystal Lake Memories” (and
who as a child appeared in “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” in 1984), has expressed interest
in developing and starring in a 13th film. Mr. Farrands is developing a TV series called “Crystal
Lake Chronicles.”
But a seven-hour documentary? Mr. Farrands, 44, recently spoke with ArtsBeat about why he
devoted so much time to the franchise, why Jason should never have gone to space, and how
Hugh Jackman fits into it all. Following are excerpts from the conversation.
Q.
There are long movies, and then there’s a seven-hour documentary about “Friday the 13th.”
How did you get the idea for a long-form film?

A Seven-Hour Documentary About a Horror Franchise? The Director Explains - NYTimes.com
9/25/13 6:18 PM
A.
I worked on another “Friday the 13th” film called “His Name Was Jason,” but I was limited to
90 minutes. The fans hated us because it was so short. After that, Thommy Hutson, my
producing partner, and I made “Never Sleep Again,” a four-hour documentary about the
“Nightmare on Elm Street” films. It turned out to be a fan favorite. Then I was one of the
financiers and editor of a coffee table book about “Friday the 13th” that came out in 2005 called
“Crystal Lake Memories.” There’s just this loyal fan base for the “Friday the 13th” movies. They
don’t want the truncated bonus features you might get on a DVD.
The film is like 12 mini movies in one, with each chapter devoted to a different film. Each one
tells its own story. You can watch it in a marathon, or piece by piece. Even if you’re not a
“Friday” fan, what we tried to do was tell the story of what it’s like to make low-budget movies in
the trenches. It’s like a film school, wrapped up in an documentary.
Q.
Why do you think the original “Friday the 13th” became so popular in the first place?
A.
You can’t define the moment when something becomes a pop-culture phenomenon. But Sean
Cunningham took what was becoming popular, because of “Halloween,” and upped the ante. He
took the suspense, and the mysterious killer who can’t be stopped, to the next level by putting
the graphic kills in your face. That hadn’t been done in a mainstream way. He convinced
Paramount, a major studio, to release it in a big way.
Q.
Even people who don’t like horror movies know who Jason is. Why do you think his image has
become so well known?
A.
Although he’s a boogeyman, Jason was a nerd who was abused and left behind. He suffered this
horrible tragedy, and when he came back to life he couldn’t stopped. There’s a wish fulfillment
there for a lot of kids. By killing off the cool kids, he speaks to people who feel alienated. Not
that you wish people dead, but it’s a way for some people to live out their strangest fantasies.
He’s an antihero. I think he’s transcended horror movies. He made his way into comics. He won
an MTV lifetime achievement award. He was on Arsenio Hall’s show and “The Simpsons.” Hugh
Jackman said he wanted to play Jason, and that’s why he became an actor.

Q.
When the first film came out, it was controversial because of its graphic depiction of violence,
especially against women. But that outrage barely registers today.
A.
In the early days the filmmakers were accused of being misogynist. But I think the movies
actually empower women. The films have a lot of female fans. The actresses who have played the
surviving characters, who use their intelligence to beat Jason, have an amazing female fan base.
They are the ones that are outsiders who don’t fit in, but they are the one who have to survive. I
think that’s a metaphor for so many struggles facing adolescents, including women.
Q.
There are several famous people who appeared in “Friday the 13th” films before they made it
big: Kevin Bacon, Crispin Glover, Kelly Rowland. But they’re not in your film. Did you have a
hard time getting celebrities who were in the films to agree to participate?
A.
Everybody who was a part of the movies was contacted. Kevin Bacon is a huge star. Whether or
not he chooses to speak about it is up to him. The answer was no, not because he didn’t want to
talk about it, but because he was working. There are people who might not want to relive it, or
they have just moved on.
Q.
Do you have a favorite “Friday the 13th” film?
A.
The first four really spoke to me when I was growing up. As it went on, it got campier, more
ridiculous, with Jason in space and going to hell.
Q.
Which one do you like the least?
A.
That would have to be “Jason X,” where he goes to space. It’s the final frontier, where franchises
go to die.

CBS is pushing into single dad territory.
The network has made a script deal for a comedy called Raised by Wolves. The half-hour effort will revolve around a 20something guy who suddenly becomes a full-time dad to his 7-year-old daughter. As the title suggests, his buddies will band
together to help him raise her.
The project is being produced by CBS TV Studios, where Wolves' executive producer Fred Savage signed an overall deal when
he launched his production company in late 2011. Matt Dearborn (Even Stevens) and Racelle Rosett (Blossom) will co-write
and executive produce.
STORY: Fred Savage's Never Ending Wonder Years as TV's Hot Comedy Director [3]
The news comes mere days after Disney XD announced it had greenlighted a pilot, Neckpee Island, from Dearborn and his
Even Stevens and Zeke and Luther writer-producer Tom Burkhard. It'll center on OB, a 14-year-old troublemaker who is sent
by his dad to the small remote island of Neckpee where he joins the Neckpee High Flag Corps.
For Savage's part, the former Wonder Years star has managed to successfully transition behind the camera, where his work as
a TV director has earned him the most attention. Among his small-screen credits: Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls and NBC's
short-lived Best Friends Forever, for which he was an executive producer as well. Earlier in his helming days, Savage directed a
few episodes of Dearborn's Stevens. In March, Savage was tapped [2] to direct the Charlize Theron comedy film Ladies Night.

to pen the pilot script.
The single-camera half-hour is being shepherded by Stiller’s Red Hour
Films and Double Feature Films for Universal TV.
Red Hour’s Stuart Cornfeld and Red Hour TV head Debbie Liebling are
also exec producing along with Double Feature’s Stacey Sher and Michael
Shamberg. Sher and Shamberg were formerly principals in Jersey Films,
which produced the 1994 pic that was distribbed by Universal.
The small screen rendition will be closely based on the movie and revolve
around recent college grad Lelaina Pierce as she struggles to make her
way romantically and professionally in the recession-plagued, pre-Internet
early 1990s in Houston, where she shares an apartment with slacker
friends.

Ben Stiller & Helen Childress To Revive ‘Reality Bites’
As Comedy Series For NBC
By NELLIE ANDREEVA Thursday August 22, 2013 @ 4:15pm PDT
Reality Bites, the cult 1994 romantic comedy
that examined the angst of Generation X college
graduates, is heading to primetime. The film’s
director Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress
have teamed for a TV series version of the
movie that starred Winona Ryder, Stiller and Ethan Hawke.
Childress will write the single-camera comedy project, which is
set up at NBC. It centers on recent college graduate Lelaina
Pierce, the character played in the movie by Ryder, as she
struggles to make her way — romantically and professionally
— in the recession-plagued, pre-Internet early 1990s. Set in
Houston, the show, and Lelaina herself with her video camera,
chronicles the lives of her “slacker” friends with whom she shares an apartment. The series
is produced by Universal Television, sibling to the film’s producer Universal Pictures. Coproducing with Uni TV are Stiller’s Red Hour Television and Double Feature Films, the
company run by Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher, who were producers on the 1994
film. Red Hours’ Stiller, Debbie Liebling, and Stuart Cornfeld executive produce with
Childress, Shamberg and Sher. WME-repped Red Hour has a pilot, Big Time In Hollywood,
FL, and stand-up comedy series, The Meltdown With Jonah And Kumail, at Comedy
Central and sketch comedy series The Birthday Boys at IFC. Childress, repped by Original
Artists, has feature horror project The Mountain at Fox and Red Hour with Stiller attached
to direct, she is penning a feature adaptation of kids book The Snowy Day, also for Fox and
Red Hour, and recently re-wrote The Drowning for Fox.

“See No Evil” was the first film that WWE produced through its film
division, and went on to earn $19 million worldwide when it was released in
2006 — its biggest hit until this year’s Halle Berry thriller “The Call,” which
generated $52 million to date.
Production on “See No Evil 2″ will start in the fall, with identical twin
helmers the Soska Sisters (http://variety.com/t/the-soska-sisters/) Jen and
Sylvia (“American Mary”) set to direct. They are also among the directors
that will contribute to the anthology series “ABCs of Death 2.” The duo
captured the attention of the film biz with their low-budget indie “Dead
Hooker in a Trunk” in 2009.
Kane will return as the reclusive madman Jacob Goodnight, who rises
from the dead in the city morgue after his killing spree at the Blackwell hotel
and goes after a group of medical students who fight to survive. Nathan
Brookes and Bobby Lee Darby are co-writing the script.
Kane, portrayed by Glen Jacobs (http://variety.com/t/glen-jacobs/), has a
high-profile match at WWE’s “SummerSlam
(http://variety.com/t/summerslam/)”on Aug. 18, at Los Angeles’ Staples
Center. The annual event is WWE’s second most popular pay-per-view
behind “WrestleMania.”
In Gregory Dark’s first film, Kane’s seven-foot tall, 400-pound character
has a rusty steel plate screwed into his skull and razor-sharp fingernails as
he stalks a group of juvenile delinquents tasked with cleaning up an
abandoned hotel.

The Cold War is proving to be very in vogue at the moment (almost as in vogue as miniseries): first FX
gave us The Americans and now ABC has greenlit the Cold War set limited series The Assets for 2014.
According to Deadline, The Assets is based on former CIA officers Sandra Grimes and Jeanne
Vertefeuille’s book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed.
Grimes and Vertefeuille are famous for weeding out a mole within the CIA who was feeding information to
the Soviets that led to the deaths of ten Soviet agents who spied for the United States. The series will take
viewers inside the complex world of the CIA at the end of the Cold War.

ABC Orders Cold War Miniseries 'The Assets'
7/24/13 9:13 PM
The Cold War is coming to ABC in 2014.
ABC has ordered 'The Assets,' a limited series project based on the best-selling book 'Circle of Treason: A
CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed.' Written by Sandra Grimes and Jeanne
Vertefeuille, 'Circle of Treason' is written by people who were directly involved in outing
Counterintelligence Officer Aldrich Ames as a spy for the Soviet Union. Grimes was a Counterintelligence
Analyst for the CIA who in 1992 offered the evidence that later lead to
Ames' capture and arrest.
Ames acted as a mole, feeding information to the Soviet Union and the
KGB, which directly contributed to the executions of at least ten Soviet
Intelligence Officers spying for the United States.
'The Assets' will delve into these true, personal stories about the end of the
Cold War and the lives affected by this spying operation. The series
intends to lift the curtain on one of America's most secretive agencies: the
CIA. Following FX's hit drama 'The Americans,' the Cold War is once
again a hot drama topic and ABC seems to have found a cherry of a book
to adapt.
According to 'Circle of Treason,' Ames was far from the ideal CIA
operative. Although he held some important assignments in the CIA, Ames
was considered a low-level officer and largely flew below the radar of most operatives. He was unkempt in
his personal appearance, he drank a bit more than was considered the norm, and his performance in various
postings was uneven. Superiors chided him often about tardiness with his reports; if a particular assignment

did not interest him, he tended to give it little attention.
By 1990, the CIA was certain they had a mole in the agency... but it would take the work of Grimes and
other officers to finally point the finger at the man responsible. 'The Assets' will follow that plotline of
suspicion and intrigue, which should make for some quality television.
Executive producers are Morgan Hertzan, Rudy Bednar and Andrew Chapman who will run the series. What
do you think of the concept behind 'The Assets?' Who would you like to see cast as the intrepid Sandra
Grimes?

ABC is making good on its promise for more limited series.
The Disney-owned broadcast network has secured the small-screen rights to the book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account
of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed, by retired CIA officers Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille, The
Hollywood Reporter [5]has confirmed. The effort, titled The Assets, is expected to air in 2014.

The series will explore CIA members' personal stories about the conclusion of the Cold War. The order comes on the
heels of the breakout success of spy drama The Americans, which delves into a similar subject matter for FX. BBC, too,
is prepping a Cold War telepic entitled Legacy. [7]
ABC Entertainment Group boss Paul Lee spoke of his desire to make a strategic push into the increasingly trendy

limited series space during a conference call [8]with reporters in May. At that time, he described a desire to break up 24episode seasons of certain serialized shows into two uninterrupted batches of 12 and fill in the gap with limited series. At
that time, he pointed to unscripted adventure series The Quest [9]as an example.
The Assets will be produced by Lincoln Square Productions, with Morgan Hertzan, Rudy Bednar and Andrew
Chapman attached as executive producers. Last year, Lincoln Square produced ABC's Final Witness, another lowerbudget, multipart true-crime series that combined re-creations and documentary elements.

ABC Orders Limited Series 'The Assets'
Project to explore end of Cold War; to air in 2014
By Andrea Morabito -- Broadcasting & Cable, July 23, 2013
ABC has ordered a limited series about the Cold War titled The Assets, to air in 2014.
Based on the book Circle of Treason: A C.I.A. Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Man He Betrayed by veteran CIA officers Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille, the series will
look at the true, personal stories of the conclusion of the Cold War as told by the CIA.
The Assets will be produced by Lincoln Square Productions and executive produced by Morgan Hertzan, Rudy Bednar and Andrew Chapman.
At its upfront in May, ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee laid out a strategy to use limited series to replace repeats of some of its serialized dramas on the schedule. It had
previously ordered two limited series, Betrayal and Resurrection.
TV Newser first reported the story.

ABC Orders Cold War Limited Series ‘The Assets’ For
2014
By NELLIE ANDREEVA Tuesday July 23, 2013 @ 9:30am PDT
ABC will be revisiting the Cold War with The Assets, a
limited series slated to air in 2014. It will be based on the
book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich
Ames and the Men He Betrayed by veteran CIA officers
Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille who hunted
down CIA officer Aldrich Ames, a mole who fed information to the
Soviet Union that contributed to the deaths of at least ten Soviet
intelligence officers who had spied for the United States. The Assets
will look inside the true, personal stories of the conclusion of the Cold
War as told by the keepers of the nation’s secrets: the CIA. The series will be produced by
ABC News’ Lincoln Square Prods. Executive producers are Morgan Hertzan, Rudy Bednar
and Andrew Chapman who will run the series. There has been renewed interest in the Cold
War on the small screen, with FX’s new drama The Americans among projects that explore
the high stakes spying games between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk Teams With Michael De
Luca On Alessandro Camon Script ‘No Quarter’
By MIKE FLEMING JR Friday June 28, 2013 @ 2:56pm PDT
EXCLUSIVE: Thunder Road has
acquired No Quarter, a spec script by
The Messenger scribe Alessandro
Camon and Michael Wilson that will be
produced by Thunder Road’s Basil
Iwanyk and Michael De Luca. No Quarter is a
contemporary crime story that touches on the themes
of the military and the difficulty of reintegrating back into society after serving as a soldier in
Iraq and Afghanistan. Those were themes in The Messenger. Set in Los Angeles in 2007,
two friends who were combat Marines and side by side survived some of the toughest
fighting in the Iraq War, find themselves on opposite sides of the law. One becomes a star
cop in an elite undercover unit while the other gets into a heist crew involved with a drug
cartel. These men, who once depended on each other for survival, see their friendship and
loyalties put to the test.
Both Iwanyk and De Luca got the material and sparked to it. They’d been looking for an
excuse to collaborate, and found this a good one. Camon, who co-wrote The Messenger
with Oren Moverman, was nominated for an Oscar for that script. He recently wrote The
Brand for Kimberly Peirce to direct, and is working on Benghazi, a miniseries for Spike TV
and Pilgrim Studios. Wilson has a background in military and intelligence operations and
was a consulting producer on Burn Notice, the USA Network show about a former
intelligence operator. Camon and Wilson previously collaborated on the TV pilot Cartel for
Working Title TV. Original Artists brokered the deal.

Lotus Entertainment Lands Thriller Spec ‘Revelation’
By MIKE FLEMING JR Monday June 17, 2013 @ 6:16pm PDT
EXCLUSIVE: It has begun to feel like that pre-holiday slumber time, but here
is a spec script that just sold in a competitive situation. Lotus Entertainment
has landed the rights to Hernany Perla’s spec, Revelation, for a low to mid
six figures. Circle Of Confusion’s David Alpert and Stephen Emery will
produce with Anil Kurian. Lotus Co-Chairmen Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson
will executive produce. D.J. Guggenheim brought in the spec and will oversee the project
for Lotus.
It’s a high concept thriller with time travel and murder, I’m told. Hernany previously sold the
feature spec Day One at MGM and his producing credits include Ghost Team One and the
upcoming feature Eden. He was an exec at Lionsgate before the writing took off. Hernany
is repped by Original Artists and Madhouse Entertainment.
Lotus has been getting aggressive. At Cannes, the label sold out international on the Anne
Hathaway-starrer Song One, and arranged financing with Silver Reel on Joshua Marston’s
Double Hour with Joel Edgerton and Michelle Williams (with CAA and UTA selling
domestic; and Craig Zobel’s Z For Zachariah with Chris Pine, Amanda Seyfried and
Chiwetel Ejiofer, and CAA and WME repping domestic. Lotus recently came on board the
re-make of Park Chan Wook’s Sympathy For Vengeance, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and
CJ Entertainment producing.

Millennium Entertainment Acquires Shia La Beouf Film
‘The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman;’ Film
Preemed In Sundance
By MIKE FLEMING JR Monday June 10, 2013 @ 11:50am PDT
EXCLUSIVE: Five months after it premiered at
Sundance, The Necessary Death Of Charlie
Countryman has sold for U.S. rights and a
theatrical release. Millennium Entertainment
has paid low seven-figures to release one of
the highest profile films in that festival. The film stars Shia
LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen and Til
Schweiger, and marks the English language feature debut of Swedish commercials director
Fredrik Bond. While Charlie Countryman polarized critics at Sundance because of its
atmospheric mix of dark humor, violence and love, it has made Bond a director to watch; he
was right there in the mix as Disney searched to find a director for Pirates Of The
Caribbean 5. LaBeouf plays a young man who goes to Bucharest, meets a mysterious
woman on the plane, and falls in love. For his romantic pursuit, he is pummeled
mercilessly, again and again, by the vicious gangster who has claimed the young musician.
Millennium has been chasing the film since it played Sundance, but it took awhile for the
deal to work for Nicolas Chartier, the Voltage Pictures financier who scored the largest
Sundance deal with the Joseph Gordon-Levitt-directed comedy Don Jon. This shapes up to
be a healthy deal by Sundance standards, and Millennium will start with a platform
theatrical release and go from there.
“In his theatrical debut, Fredrik Bond has created a stylish, action-packed ride that hooks
you from the first moments and never lets go,” Millennium CEO Bill Lee said. “This is a
perfect addition to our slate and we expect the film to draw audiences in all windows of

release.” CAA and Chartier repped the film and the filmmakers, and Millennium exec
Tristen Tuckfield repped the label. The film’s produced by Bona Fide partners Albert Berger
and Ron Yerxa, Voltage’s Craig J. Flores, and Wonderful Films’ William Horberg. Chartier
and Patrick Newall are the exec producers.

Chile readies first 3D film
23 May, 2013 | By Jeremy Kay
EXCLUSIVE: Kiné recently came on board Jorge Olguin’s horror story Whispers of the Forest, Chile’s first 3D feature.
Santiago-based producer Florencia Larrea of Kiné will continue discussions started in Cannes with sales agents on Chile’s
first 3D feature, Whispers of the Forest.
Kiné recently came on board Jorge Olguin’s horror story, now in post, which centres on an expeditionary team that awakens
an ancient supernatural force.
Chile’s Fondo De Fomento Audiovisual backed the production, which took place in 2012 in southern parts of the country.
“It’s a longer process,” said Larrea of the 3D post-production undertaking. “The 3D format is very sensory and sound is so
important as you build the effects around the visuals.”
Larrea is also lining up the Chile-Uruguay-Brazil zombie film The Summer Hit from director. Uruguayan funding is in place
and the producers have earmarked a 2014 start.
“There is a lot of cinema now in Chile,” said Larrea, “but we have to work more with private investors or brands [for
funding] because now is the moment in Chilean cinema and our filmmakers are telling great stories People have more
choice.”

VH1's Laker Girls-like cheerleader soap approaches sobad-it's-good territory

@blowryontv (http://twitter.com/@blowryontv)
Although the obvious comparison is to CW’s short-lived cheerleader
drama “Hellcats,” “Hit the Floor” — a terrible title for VH1’s soap
about, to cut to the chase, the Laker Girls — bears a closer
resemblance to Lifetime’s “The Client List,” in that it’s so trashy and

terrible, it’s kind of good. Graduating to a professional squad in Los
Angeles (the appropriately tempting Devil Girls) the show provides all
the requisite ingredients — sex, money, sports and an excuse for the
camera to pan leeringly over glistening bodies. VH1 hasn’t taken
many shots in the scripted genre, but this one should score.
Drawing from just about every cliche imaginable, the series begins with
newbie Ahsha (Taylour Paige) at tryouts, eager to follow in the footsteps of
her single mom (Kimberly Elise). Fresh-faced and naive, Ahsha quickly
befriends squad member Raquel — a single mom (Valery Ortiz) with a
deadbeat ex — but runs afoul of the imperious team leader Jelena (Logan
Browning), who sees her as a threat.
The cheerleaders answer to manager Olivia (Charlotte Ross), and the
basketball team is coached by Pete (Dean Cain), whose players seem
helpfully oblivious to his admonitions not to mess with the cheerleaders.
Then again, since one of those trying out, Kyle (Katherine Bailess), is a
stripper trying to maximize her tips, well, let’s just say rules were made to
be broken.
Created by James LaRosa, “Hit the Floor” (originally dubbed “Bounce,”
which isn’t much better) has plenty of moments where the dialogue
approaches wince-inducing levels — like the player who hits on Ahsha by
saying, “I see my chance to score and I attack” — and talks about the Devil
Girls as if they were some sort of sacred religious order.
Yet even that oddly works to the show’s advantage, if only for sheer kitsch
factor. Moreover, the setting not only provides “Dallas”-like glamour but an
additional roster of temptations thanks to its Los Angeles setting. Similarly,
the backdrop creates a built-in excuse for incorporating elements, including
choreographed dance numbers and music, from a number of other popular
shows.

It’s all highly calculated, obviously, but still kind of hard to resist — and as
lighter summer fare overlapping with the NBA playoffs, it’s pretty well
timed. Like VH1’s earlier “Single Ladies,” the multiethnic cast should also
attract a variety of audiences, even if the gals are far more convincing as
cheerleaders than most of the guys are as pro basketball stars.
“I may not be the best dancer here, but I know how the world works,” Kyle
tells Ahsha — a bit of stripper wisdom that, for better or worse, applies to
the TV world, too. Now get limbered up, Devil Girls, and go strut your stuff.

Michael Chiklis heads the robbery of a diner that turns into a stand-off with police in the crime drama. (Anchor Bay Films)
"Pawn" has some good moves.
Most of them come courtesy of former Detroiter Jay Anthony White's sharpturning, back-and-forth script, which keeps the viewer engaged at the same
time questions are floating everywhere. It also doesn't hurt that the film has
Michael Chiklis — sporting an inexplicable British accent — as its chunky
heart of darkness.
The initial set-up is simple enough. Derrick (Chiklis) leads two accomplices
into a diner late at night for a stick-up. It's revealed early on that Derrick is
actually on assignment to steal a hard drive from a safe in the back of the
place; anything else he gets is gravy.
That gravy turns out to be too tempting. So Derrick, who's supposed to wait

Indiepelago Films Finances Dance Pic ‘Scandalous!’
By MIKE FLEMING JR Wednesday May 15, 2013 @ 4:12pm PDT
EXCLUSIVE: Former Blues Clues
co-creator and exec producer Todd
Kessler will direct Scandalous!, a
musical being financed and
produced by Indiepelago Films
partners Ancil McKain and Claire Ince. The film
will star Caribbean music star Machel Montano and Bollywood’s Priya Anand and the
backdrop is the Trini version of Carnival. Anand plays a woman who got engaged to a
wealthy London suitor to help her father’s business. Then she meets a rugged local
musician (Montano), whose charisma threatens those plans. Shooting takes place in
Trinidad and Tobago in October. Montano, who has recorded with artists including Pitbull
and Wyclef Jean, will produce the soundtrack. Kessler, who ended his Blues Clues so he
could direct movies, most recently helmed the teen thriller Keith. He is repped by Original
Artists.

Chances For Filmmakers
Foot traffic on Main Street is building, and the deals are starting to go
down. In the second part of my 2013 Sundance
Film Festival opener, here are the films that have
been mentioned most often by the buyers who’ll
determine whether or not this will be a good festival for the
filmmakers. There are some good-sounding films with strong casts, the
kind that ring up decent numbers.
DON JON’S ADDICTION: Writer-director: Joseph
Gordon-Levitt. Cast: Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett
Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne
Headly. Gordon-Levitt plays a porn addict who
becomes torn between two women. This one premieres tonight, 6:30
PM at Eccles, and it will likely be the fest’s first real auction.
AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS: Writer-director:
David Lowery. Cast: Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck,
Ben Foster, Nate Parker, Keith Carradine. The tale
of an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets
out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife

was Little Miss Sunshine. 1st Screening – Monday, January 21st,
3:30pm – Eccles
BREATHE IN: Writer-director: Drake Doremus.
Cast: Guy Pearce, Amy Ryan, Felicity Jones,
Mackenzie Davis. A teacher falls for one of his

These are absolutely horrible titles for movies. One thing that movie
goers/the audience looks for is the title to determine what movies they
see + who’s starring in the movie. I believe that’s why Silver Linings is
having a hard time with revenue — what does the doggone title mean?

Kimberly Peirce To Helm ‘The Brand,’ Alessandro
Camon-Scripted Drama On Aryan Brotherhood’s
Violent Prison Reign
By MIKE FLEMING JR Tuesday April 2, 2013 @ 4:22pm PDT
EXCLUSIVE: Kimberly Peirce, who helmed Boys
Don’t Cry and most recently the Sony/MGM remake
Carrie with Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore, is
about as gutsy a female director as you’ll find this
side of Kathryn Bigelow. She has signed on to
tackle The Brand, a hard edged drama scripted by Alessandro
Camon (The Messenger), based on a 2004 New Yorker article by
David Grann. The film is about the notorious Aryan Brotherhood
prison gang. Despite seeing leaders consigned to solitary
confinement in the most secure prisons, the gang still managed to
control drug dealing, prostitution and other crimes in maximum
security prisons, setting policy and ordering killings through secret communication modes
that were akin to morse code.
The article focused on the pursuit of the gang by U.S.
Attorney Gregory Jessner, who tried 40 of the gang’s
top leaders. They were already looking at long prison
stretches for violent crimes, and the prosecutor tried to
get them the death penalty for all of the violence they
ordered or carried out. Though small in size, “The
Brand,” as they were called, had achieved dominance in prison through a highly
sophisticated operation, based on rigid hierarchy, ruthless violence, and secret
communication codes. The gang started small in San Quentin, but the effort to split up the

leaders by moving them to “supermax” prisons in the 1970s and 1980s spread the influence
of the gang all over the place. Among the characters that will figure in the movie is a
brawny gang member who was so disgusted by the practice of threatening prisoners with
violence to loved ones that he bailed on the gang and then tried to stay alive knowing he
might be killed at any moment. The rise of the Aryan Brotherhood will be chronicled through
the eyes of a young recruit who rises through the ranks and eventually defects.
Ric Roman Waugh did the first draft of the script, but Camon did the rewrite and the project
is in the process of gathering production financing. Film 360 is producing with Identity Films’
Anthony Mastromauro and Entendre Films’ Danielle Pelland. Entendre has been financing
development.
Peirce is repped by CAA and attorney Alan Wertheimer, Camon by Matt Leipzig of Original
Artists.

With "A Haunted House"opening this weekend, and "Scary Movie 5" arriving in the spring, the horror comedy
genre isn't going away...but surely we can do better? Next week, the Slamdance Film Festival will get underway
and directors Scott Rutheford and Ben Peyser will be bringing "Ghost Team One," which will hopefully be a
refreshing antidote to tired parody movies currently hitting the multiplex.
Starring Carlos Santos, J.R. Villarreal, Fernanda Romero and Tony Cavalero, the premise is familiar, with
two roommates who endeavor to make a documentary about a murder that took place in their house years ago.
Boasting a bit of a 'Harold and Kumar' vibe, this exclusive trailer for the movie reveals that while it's riffing on

found footage films like "Paranormal Activity," the movie has it's own unique brand of humor that doesn't rely on
celebrity cameos to get a chuckle, and isn't above poking fun at itself.
The Slamdance Film Festival kicks off on January 18th and "Ghost Team One" will have its first screening on Sunday,
January 20th. Watch below.

In order to impress a girl, two roommates set out to make a documentary about a murder that
took place in their house decades ago. The girl thinks that the victim's ghost still resides there,
and the two guys think that making a movie with her will get them laid. But after setting
cameras up around the house, the legitimately supernatural occurrences that follow make it
apparent that the ghost is not only real, but that she's a vengeful Vietnamese madame from the
1930's that's become smitten with our guys.
I can understand the appeal. For a while I wanted to be on shows like Destination Truth and Fact or
Fiction. Not because they were any good. But because of Jael De Pardo. Or Amy and Kriss from
Ghost Hunters as well.

ABC's 'Body Of Proof' Looking To Break The Retool Curse - Deadline.com

ABC’s ‘Body Of Proof’ Looking To Break The Retool Curse
By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Tuesday February 19, 2013 @ 11:54am PST
Tags: ABC, Body of Proof, Dana Delany
This month marks the return after extensive retooling of three drama
series fronted by bona fide TV stars — Fox’s Touch starring Kiefer
Sutherland, NBC’s Smash starring Debra Messing and ABC‘s Body
Of Proof toplined by Dana Delany — just as the proposed retooling
of another young broadcast series with top-notch cast, NBC comedy
Up All Night, is going up in flames. Touch opened its second season with an
underwhelming 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 and this past Friday plunged to a 0.7
rating in its second airing, effectively sealing its fate. (For now, Fox is not talking
about pulling the show the way CBS did with The Job after its 0.7 showing last Friday but that seems a matter of time.)
Smash‘s second season premiere also crashed with a 1.1 demo rating.
Going against the second episode of Smash tonight, ABC’s tweaked Body Of Proof will be making its third-season debut as
the crime procedural is looking to avoid the plight of many of its predecessors which didn’t survive a retool. Ironically, the
biggest new addition to the cast of Body Of Proof as part of the overhaul, Mark Valley, was the star of another series, Fox’s
Human Target, that was unsuccessfully revamped after its freshman season and didn’t last past Season 2. “This has been a
unique experience in that… I’ve been actually retooled myself,” he quipped at the Body Of Proof TCA session last month.
Other recent series that didn’t last after a revamp include NBC’s Law & Order: LA, retooled midway through a first season
that became the series’ last, as well as NBC’s Harry’s Law and USA’s Fairly Legal, both rebooted after Season 1 and
cancelled after Season 2. (In another coincidence, Valley was one of the new additions in Harry’s Law‘s revamp.) In most
cases, the networks like the overall premise and love the show’s star (Sutherland, Delany, Up All Night‘s Christina Applegate,
Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph; Human Target‘s Valley, Harry’s Law‘s Kathy Bates and Fairly Legal‘s Sarah Shahi) and/or the
series’ auspices (Harry’s Law‘s David E. Kelley, L&O: LA‘s Dick Wolf) but are looking to shake up soft ratings. Unfortunately,
a reboot almost never provides the desired ratings jolt and often has the opposite effect as fickle viewers are rarely willing to
give a show a second look, and cast changes sometime alienate core fans. (Body Of Proof axed three regulars in the reboot:
John Carroll Lynch, Nicholas Bishop and Sonja Sohn).
Working in Body of Proof‘s favor is the fact that the show is more established, having been on the air for two seasons, while
most retools are being done during or after a series’ first season. Additionally, the procedural is returning to its old Tuesday
10 PM slot where it has been a steady performer, and it has been a moneymaker for producing studio ABC Studios with solid
international sales. What’s more, the series won the California tax credit lottery, making it even more appealing for DisneyABC. But in the end, Body’s Of Proof‘s future will be determined by performance, and it should at least stay on par with last
season when it averaged a 2.1/6 in 18-49 and 9.9 million viewers in Live+7. Touch did even better, with a 2.7/7 and 9.2
million.

‘Body Of Proof’ Producers On Season 3 Changes: TCA
By THE DEADLINE TEAM Thursday January 10, 2013 @ 5:20pm PST
Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
The production team from the third-year ABC drama Body Of Proof was grilled at TCA this
afternoon to explain the show’s significant
retooling between seasons. The changes
found three regulars (Nicholas Bishop, John
Carroll Lynch and Sonja Sohn) being shown
the door while two new actors joined with the
casting of Elyes Gabel and Mark Valley as
detectives — and Evan Katz jumping onboard
as an executive
producer. “We’re always
thinking of ways to amp
up the show and make it more exciting,” explained exec producer
Christopher Murphey. “We didn’t want to take too much away from
our A story, while still servicing separate B stories related to
character.” So the production team began brainstorming ways to
bring the personal life of star Dana Delany’s character into her investigative work. That
meant adding a character with whom she had once had a relationship. And that led to the
cast changes. Fellow executive producer Matthew Gross thought the show needed to
ratchet up the excitement/thriller factor “so it wasn’t just about solving a murder but also
stopping something else from happening. We wanted to inject more octane into the show. It
leaned us toward bringing up more of the law enforcement aspect (of things).”
Katz, an alum of Fox’s 24, was brought in with marching orders to inject “more energy and
more dynamism” into Body Of Proof along with a “parallel of romantic tension.” He added,

“It’s interesting to combine a thriller with a procedural, since it’s not that commonly done,”
he said. “We’re looking for other kinds of conflict that also haven’t been done a lot before.”
Why the necessity to change things up? To grow the ratings, of course, Katz confirmed.
“We also wanted to give the network something to promote. Unfortunately, there’s no
torture. That’s disappointing to me personally. (Beat) That’s a joke.”
