Well , Greater Boston has moved to a new show site that the exhibitors loved
and I hope we will stay at this site for many years to come. The Middlesex 4H Fairgrounds in Westford MA. We had to share the grounds on Wednesday
with the Corgi club who were doing Agility. They finished up a little later
than expected but the Rau Mother and Daughter team worked right into the
schedule and had everything ready to set up. The Fairgrounds has many
buildings and the decision was made earlier in the year to give one covered
Pavilion to Rally and one to Obedience. The 4-H people were to have raked
out and cleaned up those pavilions before our arrival, but as it turned out
they had not raked and that had to be done by us early on Thursday. With
the exception of a couple Obedience people, this arrangement worked out

very well and exhibitors were happy.
they ran the rings very efficiently.
Let me mention here Sue Willumsen who is the
Queen of Decor. Sue brought in a full size van
loaded to the roof with decorations and flowers,
some people just have the knack. Sue turned our
show site into what can only be called a festive look.
Flowers were everywhere, Sue’s hanging and
spinning whirlygigs were so neat. I have gone to a
million shows but none that looked so much like a
fun party. Thank You Sue. Sue donated all of the
decorations and flowers to the Friday Raffle and the
winners were just thrilled to be able to take home
these lush colorful plants.
I must say that Brian and Elly Hawkins as Chief
Stewards were just awesome. They had a big
chart all done up and were soooo organized it
makes me blush to remember when I was Chief
Steward and had to rely on pulling notes from my
pockets. Brian and Elly, you are the just the best.
Good stewards make the judges job so much easier
and help get us done in a timely manner.
I want to thank Jeanne Charest who chaired the
obedience and ran it like a tight ship. She had good
efficient judges and on Friday when the brutal heat
kicked in I am sure they were glad to have that
Pavilion under the trees.
Jeanne is organized and efficient, a must have
quality.
This was our first year for Rally, we were lucky to
get judges at all but we got great judges. All of the
judges and workers and exhibitors loved the site, my
undying gratitude to Ann Lofgren (LRCPV) who found
the judges for me and the ball was then literally
tossed to Gayle Abrams who ran her rally ring
smoothly and efficiently. On Friday we were short a
couple of rally helpers and a few of the kids jumped
in and now know what Rally is and want to start
training- HOORAY education is a bonus. I did not get
all the names of the helpers for Rally and Obedience
but my Thanks to you all.
We set up all of the club tables and the Raffle and
the vendors and the show secretary tables under the
huge pavilion near the breed rings, this year we
were all cool and dry. We had pop ups and tents for
the breed rings but in future we should move more
of the bigger tents into the breed rings for shade.
Our breed judges Barbara Gilchrist and Lisa WeissNolechek made all the exhibitors feel welcome and
Our Sweeps judges Andrew MacArthur and Connie
Grenier did a wonderful job and again made the
exhibitors feel welcome and put everyone at ease.
It is so important to have Sweeps judges who are
quiet and patient with the puppies, often this is
their first time in the ring and they are goofy and
just a bit frightened. Thanks Andrew and Connie
for making this a good experience for them.
Thursday night was our Lobster Dinner with chefs
Scott Shaw and Dick Kennedy standing in for
Emeril and Ming. Even though the reservations got
off to a slow start due to my pricing error and the
economy, when it came to the day we had some 40
reservations. The “chowda” was fabulous, the
steamers fresh and juicy, and thanks to
collaboration between Marion Lyons and Scott, the
“lobstas” were just off the boat and cooked to
perfection, there was chicken for the non-lobster
crowd, and the best part - we got to go for
seconds on the chowder and steamers. WOW great
job guys.
Then came the time I had been dreading - THE
CLEANUP. I announced a few times that
volunteers were needed to help put the chairs and
tables away and organize the trash. My fears were
growing as I saw people headed back to their cars
and leaving but then my angels started arriving. I
want to say a big HUGE Thank You to Cheryl Swift
who was ready and able to do any and all chores
all day and was a huge help in the clean up. I did
not get all of the names but Thanks to the
wonderful gentleman who opened up his mini van
PAGE 4
OTTER
and loaded all the tables and chairs back to the
storage shed, to everyone who gathered up the
trash and dragged it to the dumpster, to the
wonderful Mom with two kids who live down the
road and stayed to clean up with us, and she does
not even belong to our club!
Special thanks to Scott Shaw who is always there to
set up and to break down, Pam Nolin-Shaw for
making sure our judges were welcomed and taken
care of. Robin Magee for preparing and running the
2 days of Raffles which brought in a lot of extra
cash for the club.
Thanks to Hartley Scribner from Cocker Spaniel
Rescue of New England for coming in to do the
breakfast and lunches, the food was great and the
prices reasonable. Hartley does this on his own and
mostly by himself, I think he was caught a little off
guard by the number of customers he had, service
got a little slow at lunch time but again thanks to
Scott Shaw and Bob Gilchrist (yes, the husband of
our judge) for stepping in to give Hartley a hand.
I was very proud to be a part of this show, I heard
many rave reviews from exhibitors and the judges,
many agreeing that GB puts on a heck of a show.
Everyone was pleased that the whole site is tree
covered so parking was close to the rings and no
one had to park in the sun.
My apologies to the Obedience folks, I should have
remembered to present the Obedience awards in
the main breed ring just before Breed.
I am sure I forgot to mention someone who worked
hard but you have my gratitude and be sure to give
your name to Karen Kennedy so that you can get
work credit.
Special thanks go out to Barb Burri and Gerrie
Owren who gathered and organized all the trophies

ISSUE 15 SEPTEMBER 2006
The Potomac, 2006
By Robin Anderson
What a fabulous time everyone had all week at this
year's Potomac show! Every day was promising in
terms of weather, and the look on all the faces of
the participants was glowing. Only one morning
threatened to be dismal weather-wise, but by
lunchtime the sun pushed its way out of the cloud
cover and the raingear vanished back into the hotel
rooms.
As usual, the show was more busy than any Ringling
Brothers Three Ring Circus with so many beautiful
dogs and decked out handlers every place you
looked. Every woman looked beautiful in their new
spring clothes. All the gents looked like they were
ready for a garden party. After the long cold winter
everyone was ready to look spiffy and have some
fun. All the dogs were excited to be showing
outdoors in large rings with all their canine buddies.
Socializing with old friends and making new ones
completed the party atmosphere.
The Veterans Ring on Wednesday night was both
joyful and tearful: Joyful to see all our favorite
dogs that are in many of our youngsters' pedigrees,
and tearful because there are some old timers who
still want to prance and do their best to please us.
All the seasoned dogs entering the ring received the
applause they love and they virtually danced their
way around the ring. The room was packed to the
ceiling with buzzing spectators. The Labrador
Retriever Club of the Potomac did a beautiful job
arranging desserts and drinks ringside for the
gallery.
Our personal adventure really got off to a bang on
Wednesday afternoon when the Superintendent
announced a 'found' dog at his table. We were
watching one of the classes and never thought it
could be one of our dogs, since we had just come
from the van and knew all our dogs were safely
OTTER
ISSUE 15 SEPTEMBER 2006
TALES
PAGE 5
tucked away. As the Superintendent kept up the description of the found dog, we decided we had better
check, 'just in case' it was one of ours. Imagine our horror and relief when we saw it was one of our own
young pups! Dazzle had somehow escaped from the crate in the van and wandered to say 'hello' to the
people in the van next to ours. After that incident, the puppy was locked securely in her crate in case she
got the hankering to visit the neighbors again. Thank goodness Labradors are friendly. Several others
escaped from crates and pens during the week and were safely caught and returned to their owners.
Shopping at the Potomac is always fun. Picking up the new issue of Julie Brown, buying little gifts for the
dogs left behind, trying on new clothes and getting new leads for the spring show season are fun ways to
spend a lunch break. It's wise to save some cash after the holidays for the vendors' booths at this show.
Friday's Best of Breed Competition was incredible, with our own
Marianne Rousseau and Dickens (CH Saltmeadow Dickens at
Cedarbay) making it almost to the very end of the competition.
Marianne and Dickens were dressed alike in a combination of
blacks and reds, and they both worked very hard for that last
look from the judge. Congratulations to both Marianne and
Dickens for a job well done. And congratulations to all our club
members who placed and made the cut in all their classes.
No trip to the Potomac is complete without a stop at Cabela's.
Our van made the side trip before heading the rest of the way
back home to New England, and it was worth the delay. With
more money spent, we got back on the road and arrived home well after dark and long after our bedtimes.
Unpacking had to wait until morning while we dreamed of traveling to the Potomac in 2007.
