The free center provides one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, special appointment sessions, walk-up assistance, computer-assisted instruction, online tutoring, a setting for study groups to meet For more information about MCC’s Learning Enhancement Centers, and a variety of other academic support services. Located on MCC’s Southern & Dobson and Red Mountain campuses and open weekdays, weekends, please call the Southern & Dobson Campus at 480.461.7678 or the day and night, the LEC is the place to go for focused learning and assistance with any of your coursework. I feel that I can learn on a level I’m proud of.” 8 MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2015-2016 ENROLLMENT GUIDE Types of Classes MCC offers a wide variety of classes in many subjects and also provides a choice of different levels, formats and types of classes to fit your schedule, learning style and lifestyle. In addition to traditional classroom sections that meet throughout a 16-week semester, we offer classes in alternative formats including: Cooperative Education Classes Cooperative Education classes combine classroom learning with real-world experience in a student’s chosen field. Cooperative Education classes are offered under the course number 296 in many disciplines. See the college catalog or an advisor for restrictions and requirements. Developmental Classes Developmental classes are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required for college-level work in reading, English and math. You can take placement tests to determine which developmental classes may be most helpful to you. Developmental classes are those numbered below the 100 level. While they do not count toward an associate’s degree, they do promote student success and achievement. Honors Program Classes The MCC Honors Program offers a unique and challenging educational opportunity for gifted and talented students. Honors classes are offered in more than 20 subjects and are designated as honors sections in this class schedule. Hybrid Classes Hybrid classes combine classroom and online instruction. They meet face-to-face less frequently than traditional classes, but offer more personal instructor contact than fully online classes. Though the exact format of the class depends upon the particular course, most often class delivery is evenly split between classroom instruction and online instruction. MCC eLearning Classes Most Internet classes do not require you to be physically present on campus to complete the coursework. You need a working knowledge of computers to succeed in Internet classes. Open Entry (OEE) Classes Modular classes are offered weekly for the first 8 weeks of the semester and allow students to complete their course work within the same semester. Modular classes may be offered online or in a traditional classroom setting. These classes are listed throughout the schedule. Service-Learning Classes Service-Learning classes integrate community service with academic curriculum by placing the student in a volunteer position that relates to classroom learning. Video Conference Network (VCN) Classes VCN classes originate either on campus or at another site. The instructor and students interact via the VCN Studio located in the Student Support (AS) building. Winter Intersession Classes Winter Intersession is a four-week session held in December and January during which you can take regular college classes in a shortened and intense period of study. Winter Intersession is part of the Spring Semester. MCC Late-Start Classes MCC offers classes with varying start dates during the semester. Students may enroll in these classes up to the first day of class. Some classes require additional course or lab fees. See discipline for additional information concerning fees. MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2015-2016 ENROLLMENT GUIDE 19 MCC eLearning Internet and Hybrid Courses MCC eLearning represents the college’s commitment to provide a wide range of learning options that will serve a diverse student population. MCC is dedicated to enriching and expanding access to higher education by providing educational choices with hybrid, Internet and web-enhanced courses. • • • What Are Internet and Hybrid Classes? As with any class, the better prepared you are before starting, the better your chances for success. Internet (Online) Classes: online classes are conducted exclusively via the Internet but may require proctored exams. Hybrid Classes: Hybrid classes combine reduced, regularly scheduled classroom meetings with required learning activities conducted via the Internet. Students enrolling in a hybrid class acknowledge they already possess the skills described in the Minimum Computer and Technology Requirements at www. mesacc.edu/elearning/get-started. What Are the Benefits of eLearning? Classes in a variety of formats provide students with a convenient and flexible way to advance their education. Internet classes are ideal for students who can’t or don’t want to come to campus. Access to a computer and reliable Internet connection will be required. Internet classes cover the same objectives and have the same transfer value as traditional classes. Hybrid classes are ideal for students who enjoy the benefits of face-to-face instruction but want to reduce class time and venture into web-based learning. What to Consider: • • • • Greater flexibility - reduces how frequently you have to be on campus. Increases the ways course materials are presented. Online methods of interaction can allow more time for reflection. Hybrid format encourages student independence while providing the support of regular face-to-face meetings with faculty. Are eLearning Courses Easier? eLearning courses are NOT easier and require the same hard work and commitment as a traditional class. Students should have some technology skills and will need to be organized, self-motivated and independent learners. Often, there will be a greater emphasis on writing. Active participation is expected, and students often engage in class discussions and participate in groups and other active learning activities using web-based formats. Should I Take eLearning Classes? Find out by taking the readiness assessment at mesacc.edu/ eLearning/get-started. The assessment will evaluate whether you have the skills needed to be a successful eLearning student. Upon completion of the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive report detailing your strengths, areas you need to work on and resources that will help you enhance your skills. Also consider these factors: • I am a self-directed, independent learner. 20 I can maintain the pace of a class fully online or with fewer classroom meetings. I feel comfortable using technology and have dependable access to a computer and the Internet. I communicate effectively through email and other online methods. How Do I Get Prepared? On the same page as the readiness assessment: mesacc.edu/ eLearning/get-started, you will also find an orientation to eLearning .This short, online orientation is designed to give you a general overview of eLearning so you know what to expect. To go directly to the orientation, go here: http://youtu.be/ dILeQfSNYMI After viewing the orientation consider reviewing the rest of the content on this page such as: expectations and perceptions of eLearning, minimum computer skills and requirements, accessing your student email, finding your class, contacting your instructor, Learn *Canvas, get organized, purchase textbooks, technical and academic/class Help, and tips. What Is Canvas? This is the learning system platform for your Internet and hybrid courses. Most eLearning course information will be available on Canvas. To learn everything about Canvas – enroll in this free, self-paced course: https://learn.maricopa.edu/enroll/ KLTJYC I’m Registered! How Do I Get Started in My eLearning Course? Entry to your Internet course can be found by logging into Canvas at learn.maricopa.edu. Use youre MEID and Password to log in. It is also recommended that students check their Official Student email for a message from their instructor. Students in hybrid courses should attend the first day of class. The instructor will explain the hybrid format and guide the student to the Internet activities. Where Do I Go to Get Help or Ask Questions? MCC’s HelpCenter provides students with in-person, email, phone and live chat assistance. Go to mesacc.edu/help or call 480.461.7217. How Do I Find eLearning Course Offerings? ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL RECORDS maricopa.edu/legal/ The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights are: 1.The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the college receives a request for access. Students should submit written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect to the Office of Records and Registration. The college official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the college official to whom the request was submitted, that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed. 2.The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes to be inaccurate or misleading. Students should write the college official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the college decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the college will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of his or her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Revised 2.9.12 MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2015-2016 ENROLLMENT GUIDE 29 MARICOPA — ASU PATHWAYS PROGRAM (MAPP) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is a MAPP? A MAPP is a tool that outlines a prescribed sequence of classes for you to take at the community college to prepare you for your desired degree at ASU. The MAPP outlines all of the specific classes that are required for your ASU degree. This will help you to know which classes you can take at the community college. Each MAPP has an associate’s degree built into it and the necessary grade point average (GPA) for the program. Why should I follow a MAPP? There are several benefits. Students who complete a MAPP within three years of signing up are guaranteed admission into the specified ASU degree program. MAPP students are also locked into a specific tuition cohort while at ASU, which provides a reduced tuition rate. Additionally, MAPP students are eligible for specific merit scholarships once at ASU. Can I get any degree I want? ASU currently has 250 degree programs to choose from. At this time, MAPPs are being developed for the most popular majors for community college transfer students. For a list of MAPPs that are currently available, please visit maricopa.edu/transferasu. More MAPPs will be developed over time. What if I’m undecided and don’t have a major yet? The MAPP program is designed for students who have already selected a major and know what they want to study. If you are unsure of your major, please meet with your Academic Advisor or a Career Services staff member to determine the best major for you. Since a MAPP outlines all of the courses required for a particular degree, it can be a great way to compare majors and find the best fit for you. How many years do I spend at the community college? Students may spend different amounts of time finishing their coursework at the community college; however, to receive the benefits associated with the MAPP, you must complete your MAPP within three years from the time you sign up. Can I transfer to another university besides ASU? The MAPP is part of an exclusive partnership between the Maricopa Community Colleges and Arizona State University. Each specific MAPP leads to a specific degree at ASU. If you choose to attend a university other than ASU, it is likely that not all of those classes will be applicable at another university. 30 Can I change my major once I sign up for a MAPP? There is a specific MAPP for each degree. If you change your major, you will also need to also reset your “MAPP start date,” which will affect your tuition cohort and three-year completion period. Can I go to any of the Maricopa Community Colleges? The MAPPs are applicable to any of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges: Chandler-Gilbert, Estrella Mountain, GateWay, Glendale, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Rio Salado, Scottsdale and South Mountain. Please be aware that not all degrees and/or classes are available at every one of the community colleges. Please check with your community college advisor for class availability. How much does it cost? There is no cost to sign up for the MAPP program. While you are at the community college, you will pay community college tuition and fees. While you are at ASU, you will pay university tuition and fees. However, because of your participation in MAPP, you are also eligible for a special tuition program called the Tuition Commitment Program, which limits the tuition increases that will occur during completion of your bachelor’s degree. How does the tuition incentive work? The Tuition Commitment Program tuition rate is based on the student’s semester of acceptance in a MAPP program and compliance with the MAPP requirements. Please visit http://students.asu.edu/tuition/commitment for more information about how the tuition incentive works. How do I get started? For more information about MAPPs, please see your advisor at the community college. It is strongly suggested that you seek academic advisement each semester to ensure that you are staying on track and completing the appropriate courses. To talk with a Maricopa Community College advisor, visit maricopa.edu/transferasu When should I start talking to an advisor at ASU? Once you are about a year away from transferring to ASU, we suggest that you see an ASU Transfer Advisor. ASU Transfer Advisors hold office hours at each of the Maricopa Community Colleges and are able to assist you with the transfer process. To find the appropriate ASU Transfer Advisor at your community college, please visit http://transfer.asu.edu MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2015-2016 ENROLLMENT GUIDE Start your bachelor’s degree at Mesa Community College by earning your associate’s degree first.
