How to dress like a Parisian...
My press trip to Paris was
crazy busy but despite the
running around and stress
you can’t help but notice the
timelessness of Parisian
dressing. Parisians exude an
elegant nonchalance that is
just so appealing. This is my
101 to nailing their classic
sartorial look.
As Coco so famously said,
“Keep accessories to a
minimum, simplicity is key.”
Forget stilettos – embrace
flats - loafers, brogues,
trainers they look effortless
and your feet will thank you.
Team stripes with modern
shapes, wear shades with
everything and remember an
unstructured white shirt
makes everything look chic.
Pair any of the above with
undone hair and you will
blend in seamlessly on the
banks of La Seine.

THE TD SPORTS DESK
Take a bow local hockey and football players.
Success for Sasha Reed.
Congratulations to Surbiton Hockey
Club u16s Boys and Girls teams, who are
both National Champions this year! The
Boys have managed an incredible average of
a 6-1 win in every match, beating Marlow
4-0 in the final. In the Girls’ final, Surbiton
beat Southgate 7-1 to make it three titles
in three years – an incredible achievement!
It tops off a fantastic season for both
teams.
On top of that, one of the girls, Thames
Ditton’s Sasha Reed, has been selected for
the U16 England national squad. Sasha, who
attended both TD Infant and Junior Schools,
originally played football for Chelsea
U13s. However, after being persuaded to
play hockey only three years ago, she has
progressed remarkably. Last year, she was
picked, a year early, for the U16 England
National Age Group squad for assessments
and this year made the U16 England
Hockey team. Sasha has recently played a
4 day tournament against the Dutch, and
although the Dutch won narrowly 2-1, 3-2
and 3-1, England’s coach declared it to be
the best performance by England U16 in 6
years.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon in April,
the year 6 boys from Thames Ditton Junior
School kicked off their school uniforms in
favour of their dark blue football strip to
take on the reds of Esher Church School
in the semi-final of the inter-school
football tournament.
Match report provided by Bede Feltham,
TDJS Assistant Coach to Head Coach
Dominic ‘Pep’ Fairclough:
“Two finely matched teams with a dazzling array
of young talent on display. The Basson twins,
Ashton and Ethan, sparked from the off. An early
break on the left from Ashton saw a low cross
finish with a rasping low shot from Isaac Foster
which was saved well by the opposition keeper.
As the game progressed the crowd sensed a goal
was imminent with Louis Fairclough controlling the

mid-field with his usual panache. Unfortunately
for Thames Ditton the goal was provided by Esher
who slotted in from a quick break, 5 minutes
before half-time, beating goal-keeper Freddie
Pank at the near post. Substitutions followed with
Luke Galpin and George Gregson trading places
throughout the game, with the first half finishing
0-1 in favour of the visitors.
Half-time. Oranges anyone?
The momentum seemed to swing in TD’s favour as
the first half kicked off, an impulsive hand ball by
an Esher Church defender led to a calmly slotted
penalty from Isaac making it 1-1.
Great defending from Joe Wilson and Ethan plus
match saving goal-keeping from Freddie kept
Thames Ditton spirits alive. As it was, Esher ended
up deserved winners after a corner kick was
volleyed in for the winner, the final score being 1-2.
It was a great game for all involved.”

ROUNDABOUT
If you have visited Thames Ditton High
Street recently, you will have noticed
a mass of patriotic bunting and flags; a
beautiful sea of red, white and blue to
commemorate the Queen’s 90th Birthday.
In an initiative, which epitomises
community spirit, TD Retailers Association
and Thames Ditton Crafters have joined
forces to decorate the village…and what a
beautiful job they have done.
The decorations will remain until the
events to commemorate the Queen’s
birthday end in June, and they truly have
made the village look even more fabulous.
We caught up with Jenny, founder of
Thames Ditton Crafters, to ask about
the bunting project. “The enormity of the

task didn’t hit me until the day I went to
measure up, and my amazing team and
I haven’t come up for air! I envisioned
the project as something that we could
all work on together as a team, and
something that would really mean a lot for
our community. It has been a joy to see
our finished bunting gracing the beautiful
village of Thames Ditton and know that
every stitch was sewn with such love and
dedication (and in my case a whole lot
of learning!). My heartfelt thanks to all
who caught the vision and ran with it, and
whose support has meant so much.”
Thank you to all involved. Seeing the flags
and 200m of bunting in the sun really does
make you feel proud to be British…and
proud to live in Thames Ditton!

A BIT ABOUT...
by Angie Henderson
Censorship...
On going to press, The Sun was at the
Court of Appeal attempting to lift a gagging
order preventing them naming a celebrity
couple, one half of which had been caught
participating in a ménage a trois.
The judge had banned the media from
naming all individuals involved by threat of
imprisonment. Although all parties have
been identified in the US and closer to
home in Scotland and Ireland, the Judge
decreed that in the UK, infidelity is a
private matter under human rights laws.
Lord Justice Rupert Jackson instructed that
disclosure of the couple’s identity would
create a ‘Media storm’ and invite public
interest into their family lives.
futures. Interestingly, the very press that
is fighting for freedom of speech claiming
public interest actually censored themselves
when in their own interests.
For me, the story is not about the cult of
celebrity as it is about freedom of speech
and the press. Even if you couldn’t give a
fig about who in the world of celebrity are
bumping uglies, should we care about the
attempt by the courts in our country to use
injunctions against our ‘free’ print media?
The newspaper countered that the story
was of public interest and contradicted
the cryptic couple’s public portrayal of a
committed marriage.
24
These celebrities had previously invited the
gossip magazines into their home opening
their lives to readers. Hypocritically, they
invite the media in when it generates a fee,
promotes their product and raises profile.
An unelected and unaccountable judge
determines what’s in the public’s best
interest and uses law to gag the ‘free’ press
accordingly in a State approved version
of the news. Whilst it is only the rich,
privileged and powerful who can utilise the
legal system and these injunctions.
Doesn’t everyone deserve a private life
however public their life is? Unless of
course there is a conflict of interests as was
argued recently when Culture Secretary,
John Whittingdale, was outed by the BBC as
being in a relationship with a prostitute. The
conflict came as he is to sit on the second
sitting of the Levesen enquiry into press
intrusion. Newspapers had not run the
story it was argued because it concerned
the man in charge of determining their
Such injunctions could be argued as a
complete waste of time and money. An
expert warned though that in a ‘digital,
global age with no boundaries’ where
anyone with access to Google has discovered the ‘not-so-secret’ celebrities involved,
the gagging of the press with regulation
is futile with an uncompliant internet.
Spielberg once said, “There is a fine line
between censorship and good taste and moral
responsibility.”

THE PARENT TRAP
BY TD MUM AND RESIDENT, A.J. GRANGE
Family Day out.
Once in a while I insist we all go out
and do something cultural.
This is fuelled by my daughter’s reluctance
at times to doing anything that involves
leaving the sofa for more than 20 minutes
and my growing obsession with getting
everyone out together as a family. I fear it’s
only a matter of time before teenage angst
grips the whole house and we all start living
in separate rooms.
Anyway, recently I managed to persuade
everyone that a trip to the mighty Tower
of London would be a magnificent idea and
one that we would all enjoy immensely.
Of course the first hurdle to overcome
in our house is actually to get everyone
up, fed, watered and clothed in time for
the 9.25am train to London and to ensure
that the dog has water and a suitable TV
programme selected to keep him company
in our absence. What generally happens is
that I manage all of the above in a swift and
organised manner and then have to cajole
everyone else to do the same. This can
involve repeatedly asking my son whether
he has brushed his teeth and sending my
daughter back up the stairs at least twice
to put something more suitable on (I always
err on the side of sensible shoes and tops
that cover at least 84% of my upper body
parts but then again I am about 30 years
past my crop top days and I don’t have abs
like my daughter).
Once we’re all on the train and I’ve
checked that I’ve got everyone’s tickets at
least 6 times I can then relax and enjoy the
scenery.

I have also become a master of packing
emergency food and water in my handbag
to see off any sudden sugar lows and
potential tantrums that could derail our
happy trip out.
I have to say the Tower of London was
fantastic and for the first couple of hours
everyone was in fine mood, posing happily
for photographs in gusting winds of around
60mph and taking in the magic of the
great Tower and not arguing. Even the
long queue for the Crown Jewels didn’t
incite any arguments for a change, (my
emergency Digestives obviously played a
major part in this small victory). No, with
our family, everything goes swimmingly until
my children either get a bit bored, tired
or hungry. Once any one of these things
happen, or God forbid, all three happen
simultaneously, then it usually results in
Armageddon and we have to make a hasty
retreat back to Waterloo before a murder
occurs.
We may not always be the perfect family
when we venture out but at least we get
out - long may these days last!

COCKTAIL CONFIDENTIAL
by Paul Steven
Life in the fast lane - whatever the weather
No matter how passionate or patriotic you
might be there is one thing about this
ountry that is indefensible - weather! It’s
verywhere you look and, frankly, there’s too
much of it. I guess whilst nature was handing
ut the nice stuff Great Britain was too busy
uying up all the cliffs it could and digging up
l that dirt tying us to oh-so-predictablyeasonal Europe. We got what was left, like
o much wine-soaked bunting at the end of
he party: the scrapings, the fannings, the stuff
hat falls out of the tea-cutter and gets
urned into tea bags.
till, every now and then, as the summer
asses by on its way somewhere, we do get
he odd sunny day, week or even, when
ature decides to poke us in the eye, two.
You can’t rely on it though. Aristotle cautions
s that one swallow does not a summer
make, so where optimism fails to materialise
sufficient reality we must devise a cocktail
o deliver us something of the sense, the
mbience, of a sun-soaked sanctuary –
omewhere the clock hands melt and the
nly alarm is an imaginary cricket.
The obvious thing to reach for is Pimm’s, and
I urge you to do so. Reach for it, locate it and
give it a really good shove off the table. If
you’re thinking of going to a lawn-bowling
match, or reading Wodehouse then a good
Gin Fizz will be perfect, but you know it will
rain later if you do.
For the guaranteed sunshine effect you need
tequila, a good tequila that is made from
proper agave at a proper Hacienda and come
in hand-made glass, it is born in a place with
370 days of sun a year, where mañana never
comes and the only digging of ditches is one
to bury Donald Trump in.
Don’t believe me? here’s the proof: I went to
Silverstone in April to watch a sportscar race
as a guest of Tequila Patron, who ran two
awesome cars in the race and didn’t skimp on
the go-faster juice in hospitality either. On the
day before the race, it SNOWED! Yet, come
race day, the sun was out, skies clear and I got
a tan.Yeah, baby! That’s tequila power!
This cocktail is a tribute to that day - a
promise to you that the dreary English rain
will become a steamy tropical monsoon, the
delayed test match a chirp of cicadas if you
pass these around.
Baja Margarita
• 2 shots Patron Tequila • 1 shot fresh lime juice
• ½ shot mango/agave syrup
• 1 shot mango juice • 2 sprigs fresh Thyme
Strip the Thyme off the stalks as best you can
and muddle them in the bottom of you shaker
to release the aroma. Add the remaining
ingredients and shake. Strain thoroughly
into a coupette or whatever quirky glass
comes to hand and decorate with another
sprig of Thyme.

ALL CHANGE AT YE OLDE SWAN!
As we say ‘au revoir ‘ to The Dandys.
We’re sure you’ll all join us in wishing
Mike, Jo and family the best of luck as
they say farewell to the village after
seven fantastic years running Ye Olde
Swan pub. A huge supporter of ATD, Mike
has filled many pages with his humorous
sports commentaries over the years, he
also helped create the annual Thames
Ditton Sports Personality of the Year award
which has become a massive success! He
will be greatly missed by all at ATD, his
customers and most of our readers too!
“A
s they say, ‘all good things come to an end’ and after seven wonderful and
memorable years it’s time to move on to the next chapter in our lives.
We have made so many friends, far too many to mention, and have many amazing
memories, events and occasions that we’re sure will also remain fond in the memories of
so many.
Thank you Thames Ditton for your support and custom but most of all your friendship,
which we hope will always be as warm.”

CUSTOM BRANDED CLOTHING
Right here in Thames Ditton.
From an office on The Island – and
with factories in the South West, the
North West and Greater London
– local business Pier32 Ethical
Promotional Clothing supplies many
varied organisations with custom
branded clothing and accessories.
A few of the printed or embroidered
garments may well be spotted locally.
The production of the Thames Ditton
Junior School leaver hoodies is an annual
event and these are due to be handed
out as soon as the children have finished
their SATS exams. As for the bright red
garments promoting this very magazine,
they will be making regular appearances
around the village as various team
members work hard to maintain their
fitness and take part in fun runs.
As Pier32 still continues to grow – with
orders just last month going to Inverness,
Caernarfon and Paris amongst many others
– it will remain a Thames Ditton business
and a part of the local community.
More information can be found at
www.pier32.co.uk and Ian can be
reached at the TD Island office on
020 8398 2867.
Pier32 had, for a numerically coincidental
32 years, been run by long-term Island
resident Gerry Hayter, until his retirement
from day-to-day duties in March. Pier32 is
now managed and operated by his sonin-law, Ian Johnson. Ian has been a Thames
Ditton resident for many years, having
moved here in 1990.

TAXATION & ACCOUNTING ADVICE
Now You See Them…
With so much recent press coverage of
corporate secrecy and offshore tax havens,
UK legislation is tackling those who hide
behind nominees and trustees.
All limited companies and LLPs in the
UK now must keep a register of “people
with signiÀcant control”. From 30th June
2016 the details will have to be Àled at
Companies House. We are the Àrst G8
country to implement this requirement
which all EU countries will have to adopt
by June 2017.
Any individual holding more than 25% of
a company’s shares or voting rights, with
a right to appoint or remove the majority
of the board of directors, or who simply

has the right or practical ability to exercise
“signiÀcant inÁuence or control” over a
company, will have to be included on the
new register. This also applies to such as
corporate trustees and nominees.
Where an individual has signiÀcant control,
they will now Ànd personal details such as
name, address, nationality, residence and
date of birth on the public register, which
via Companies House is free to search
online.
Non-compliance is a criminal offence. The
targets clearly include tax evasion and
terrorist Ànancing.

£ MONTHLY FINANCIAL ADVICE
Commercially Speaking
by Paul Basson
for further advice from advisers, but you do
wonder where it will end. Anyway, I’ll cover
this area in greater detail in future issues –
the joys!
Andy Church
The end of the 2015/16 tax year
brought with it the normal dash of
utilising Individual Savings Account
(ISA) allowances, together with
personal pension contributions,
particularly for those lucky amongst
you to be higher earners, in view of
changes in available contributions
from hereon in.
The Government seem to have been quite
aggressive in their tinkering of the pensions
regime for those affected, in restricting
income tax relief to the first £10,000 only,
from £40,000, with any excess contributions
above this taxed on the individual.Yes, there
will be the option to carry forward any
unused allowances from the previous three
tax years, but this facility will only last for
the next two / three tax years. Importantly
though, this isn’t just your own contribution
that’s being taxed, but from all sources
including those paid for by employers.
So, yet more administration for employers
and pension scheme administrators to take
on board, together with additional taxation

At Knight James we offer a range of services
for clients, ranging from the obvious areas
associated with financial planning investments, mortgages, pensions, life
assurances and individual protection,
through to Wills and Trust planning for
families. The other key area of advice, is that
of commercial insurance broking, headed up by
Andy Church.
Some of you will know Andy from in and
around the village, or from his long standing
membership of Colets. Andy has worked in
all aspects of commercial insurance for well
over 30 years, covering pretty much all areas
of insurances for clients.
Commercial broking lends itself to those
with an in depth knowledge of markets,
particularly given the very nature of
insurance, which I believe we all have an
attitude of ‘cheapest is best’ approach.
However, in commercial insurance terms,
not having the correct kind of cover in place
can lead to potentially disastrous exposure
for both individuals and business owners, or
those being drafted with the responsibility of
organising same.
It is the one of the few areas where the
relationship with clients is key, being
essential that Andy is fully aware of all
aspects of a client’s business. This could be
understanding the type of projects
undertaken for, say a construction firm,
through to highlighting a need for a certain
call Susie on 020 8972 9826
type of cover that a client hadn’t previously
thought about, or indeed considered
necessary.
Andy has clients ranging from individual
builders and business owners, through to
large construction companies and
manufacturers. Insurances covered range
from public, product and employer’s liability,
through to professional indemnity and all
areas of insurance associated with the
construction industry – including motor
fleet insurances.
As with all types of broking, experience and
knowledge of the market place is key.
However, unlike almost all other areas of
insurance broking, ensuring you have the
right ‘access to market’ is paramount. As
such, Andy’s relationships with insurance
companies and composite providers has
been built over a number of years.
AXA, QBE, Zurich are huge insurance
companies that Andy is pleased to work
with, together with specialists in Lloyds of
London for those insurances whereby a
composite of insurance companies is more
cost effective. Indeed, certain types of
insurances lend themselves purely to the
Lloyds market, and Andy has extensive
experience of broking to this area.
Obviously for those of you who are
employed, out of work or retired, this
service isn’t required. However, there will
be those amongst the village and wider
community who will, at some point, need to
have these kind of insurances in place.
Andy relishes the opportunity to provide a
comparative quote for an existing renewal,
even if it is helpful as a reference to ensure
that your existing cover is adequate or,
indeed cost effective. There’s no charge for
providing a market appraisal, as it’s all part of
the service.
And so, as ever, please feel free to call or
pop in. We’re here to help.

ABOUT THAMES DITTON GARDENS
Our monthly gardening column written by landscape and garden
design expert, Simon Munro.
As the temperatures rise and the days
lengthen during the Spring and early
Summer months it’s great to be able to
spend more time outside our homes,
distancing oneself from the protection
they offer and reconnecting not just with
our gardens but the communal spaces
and wider landscapes around the villages.
And it’s at this moment, in May, when
the trees begin to be furnished with new
leaves and blossom, when the parks, greens
and gardens look their best and we can
appreciate the wider beauty of the area we
all share.
Most people recognise that the trees of
the village areas enhance the distinctive
quality of the areas we inhabit; whether the
clouds of Holm Oak canopies in the heart
of Thames Ditton, architectural Lebanese
Cedars punctuating the skyline or groups
of trees and small woodlands that line the
margins of playing fields, roads and railways
that offer privacy, provide a backdrop
our homes and natural context for our
gardens. Thankfully, most people respect
this natural asset, and of course there is
both vigilance and protection offered by the
Council. But at a time when there is both
restriction upon civic budgets and vigorous
development and change in the constructed
aspects of our lives, I’m wondering whether
this is balanced with developed attention
to the natural capital, and whether as
the broadening season suggests, we
need to extend our own perception and
understanding of these shared resources to
ensure their existence into the future?
Lift your head up and look beyond, behind
and above. There are some remarkable
trees; with huge billowing canopies and
great stature reflecting a scale and agespan
that dwarfs our own. They provide a
wonderful setting for our homes and
businesses and perhaps provide the greatest contribution to what defines this unique
peri-urban location. In time, we might even
be able to make our own addition to this
resource, but for the moment let’s just
enjoy the beauty of our trees.
Gardening Tip of the Month:
It’s all too easy to get caught up in the gardening frenzy at this time of the year, throw
money at a quick fix and be seduced by all those blooms at the garden centre. But
remember if you are planting in the ground, that adding compost to the soil and mulching
around plants will reduce the need for watering and improve the chances of establishment
as the Summer approaches.

POLICE & NHW REPORT
Are you protecting your rear?
I‘m pleased to report readers have been
protecting their rears!
Three burglaries reported this month in
Greenways, Manor Road South and Fairway
Close, and a couple of thefts from vehicles.
Good news - males attempting to defraud an
elderly male for alleged work on his house
were intercepted by Police. Remember - never
have work done by people knocking door to
door – use trades that friends or neighbours
have used and obtain at least three quotes.
Recently published, ‘Crime and the value of
stolen goods’, shows how types of stolen goods
and value have changed. Some brief snippets:
• Stolen goods value £1.8b in 2013/14, down
74% from £6.9b in 1995.
• The number of thefts fallen by 60%
• Theft of motor vehicles down 88% –main
contributor to drop in stolen goods value.
• Consistently since 2001 cash has been the
most stolen item.
written by
John HaberÀeld (NHWatch Coordinator) and
Elaine Burtenshaw (Elmbridge Crime Reduction OfÀcer)
Road, Thames Ditton. Other gardens ‘visited’
here and in Basing Way. Police apprehended a
suspect at 5am.
• 6 March. Attempted burglary 4am in
Basingfield Road, Thames Ditton, doors and
windows tested but all locked.
• 27 March. Attempted burglary 8pm Molesey
Road, West Molesey. Intruders gained entry but
were disturbed and fled empty handed.
• 1 April. Attempted burglary 6pm Greenways,
Hinchley Wood. Two broken windows at rear in
attempt to steal a bicycle. Deterred when alarm
tripped.
• 1 April. Attempted burglary in Manor Road
South, Hinchley Wood via hole cut in kitchen
window, locked interior door prevented further
access.
• 9 April. 8.30 pm burglary in Fairway Close,
Hinchley Wood. Broke rear patio doors, stole
spare key to new car and some valuables. An
Audi A3 car believed to have been used by the
thieves.
Six reasons why certain goods are more
attractive to steal: Concealable, Removable,
Accessible,Valuable, Enjoyable, Disposable. No
surprise then that burglaries focus on cash and
jewellery.
Details of recent incidents reported by
NHW members (including those above):
• 1 March. 92 year old resident received scam
phone call allegedly from Council to arrange
energy survey visit. Daughter contacted council
- confirmed a scam.
• 2/3 March. Unauthorised access to rear of
property in Westville Road, Long Ditton.
• 3 March. Attempted break-in 5am in Ewell
Road, Long Ditton.
• 5/6 March. Garden shed break-in in Station

LUKE’S COMPUTER CORNER.
IBM - Big, Blue, Beleaguered.
Once thought to be too big to fail, now
well into the ‘Decline’ section of the
‘Corporate Lifecycle’ Graph.You know, the
one after ‘Maturity’ and before ‘Death’ (or
‘Rebirth’). Massive bureaucracy, apparent
inability to look after long-time customers,
abandoning support services and worst:
‘Not Keeping Up’ with new technology
and innovation. Thomas J. Watson must be
spinning in his grave.
In 1911 three companies merged to
become The Computing-TabulatingRecording Company (CTR). They made
Tabulation Machines. Machines so
dangerously fascinating that I dare not
include a description here lest a wave of
feverish excitement and affronts to public
morality sweep KT7.
So far, so boring; let’s introduce our hero
Thomas J. Watson. No technological genius
or pioneering mathematical wiz, he was a
salesman, a very good salesman, and like all
very good salesmen, he was a bit dodgy.
So much so that in 1912, when he was
working for NCR (The cash register
and point of sale people, still very much
in business) he and twenty six of his
colleagues were pinched by the Feds for
anti-competitive behaviour involving fake
companies and the usual sleaze. It’s good to
know that our morally upright politicians
and business leaders today would never
countenance anything like that.
year later when the convictions were
overturned on a technicality.
Four year later he had doubled the
company’s income, and in 1924 renamed it
Industrial Business Machines.
When the Great Depression hit he made
the incredible decision not to cut back
production or retrench, but actually
increased output, storing what wasn’t sold.
And so, when the economy recovered, IBM
was able to service their customers straight
from the warehouse, much faster than any
competitor.
But it was Watson’s second big decision
that was to supercharge the company and
change history.
Next month:The Feds strike back!
Of course a little thing like a federal
conviction didn’t slow Watson down, as he
was offered the job of General Manager at
CTR, which changed to President a

WHO’S WHO IN THAMES DITTON
A little bit about Manoj ‘Manny’ Patel...
words by Tricia Martin
When ITV’s Good
Morning Britain
wanted a shopkeeper’s
view on the Sunday
trading debate, it
was no surprise to
see their cameras in
Manny’s, Long Ditton.
For since he traded
an electronics career
for shopkeeping,
Manoj Patel’s store
has become a multi
award-winner and a
crucial part of village
life.

Manny, it was fun for locals to see
you on breakfast TV, but it’s not
unusual for you to be the ‘voice of the
shopkeeper’ is it?
No. If trade press are writing about shops
like mine and want an opinion they will
often contact me. I’ve been involved
with government groups over the years
discussing such matters and the Sunday
trading story is currently a big issue for
small businesses.
Yet you never saw yourself doing this.
Tell us about your background.
My family came to England in 1972, when Idi
Amin gave the Asian population three days
to get out of Uganda. My dad got a job in
Northampton then we settled in Leicester,
where I lived for 20 years. I studied at
Loughborough and got an apprenticeship
with the army, doing Electronics, a career I
had for 22 years.

or Malvern. We chose Chertsey as my
wife Minal’s family were in Esher and we
moved to Farnborough. My career was
very interesting; I dealt with NATO, was
involved with Porton Down and did a
secondment to the DTI advising Patricia
Hewitt. However the commuting was
tough and with both Minal and I working, a
change in career was in order. The perfect
opportunity presented itself as Burgess

It can’t have been easy taking on a
shop that had been in the same family
for 50 years?
No. We had to make some tough choices
immediately. The shop was delivering 740
papers a day, which just wasn’t practical. We
found a solution and gradually people got to
know us and accepted us.
