Josiah Updegraff, Des Moines, Iowa/Whidbey Island, Washington. has
lived primarily in the Midwest, but has worked across the country throughout his
career. He shares with us his 50 years of experience in the stone trade. Josiah
first put his hands to stone when he was 13, and has not set his tools down since.
He apprenticed at age 17, and immediately went to work professionally in all
realms of stone and masonry projects. As a master mason his abilities include
wet and dry masonry, cutting, architectural and sculptural carving, installation
and fabrication. Josiah has worked throughout the country running crews on
high-end residential estates, as well as large-scale commercial projects. He has
been an instrumental team member and consultant to internationally renown
environmental sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, who he worked with on several
projects including Three Cairns at the Des Moines art Center in Iowa, Stone River
at Stanford University, and most recently River at The Aspen Institute, CO. Josiah is now continuing his career in
the Pacific Northwest turning his focus to distinctive residential stonework, fireplaces and sculptural carving.
Steve Cohan, Hot Rock Masonry, San Juan Islands is aptly named for
his specialty work in stone masonry fireplaces. His extensive work includes
dry stacked and mortared features, traditional fireplaces, European
masonry heaters, patios and flagging, and countertops of soapstone and
granite. Steve’s apprenticeship was in stone masonry over 30 years ago
in Virginia, upon his completion he opened his own business specializing
in the traditional dry-stack style of the region. Over a hundred stone
projects ranging from bake ovens to historic restorations were completed,
including Lexington’s Stonewall Jackson House and a 90-foot tall marble
minaret for an Islamic mosque. It was in the soapstone-rich Blue Ridge
Mountains that Steve encountered the European tradition of masonry
heaters, that he now specializes in. Steve now calls the Pacific
Northwest home after building here for nearly 20 years. Please visit
www.hotrockmasonry.com to see some of Steve’s hot rocks!
Nathen Blackwell, Ventura,
California is a master letter and
architectural carver whose portfolio
includes the stone lettering on the
monument, headstone and presidential seal for the late
President Reagan. Nathen Blackwell, now 87, was born in Hull,
England and learnt his trade in Yorkshire, England. When Mr. Blackwell
is not busy inventing the perfect tool for the job or ballroom dancing,
he is actively cutting and carving memorials, doing restoration work
for churches, cemeteries, and governmental buildings. Nathens mere
presence at StoneFest is a gift to all. We warmly welcome him back
for his second appearance!

Stone Productions, Portland

cut lettering, custom fireplace
