Blake Shelton may have ben an unlikely candidate for
superstardom but that’s hardly due to a lack of charisma.
Shelton possessed a warm, masculine ease that lent his
rowdier numbers a sense of sly humor but this relaxed
touch also made him an effective crooner of ballads, the ace
in the hole that helped him cross over from country to the
mainstream in the 2010s. His transition to being a household
name certainly was assisted by his starring role as a judge on
NBC’s hit musical competition The Voice, but by that point
Shelton had racked up plenty of number one country hits,
beginning with his 2001 debut “Austin” and running through
“Some Beach,” “Home,” “Doin’ What She Likes,” “She Wouldn’t
Be Gone,” “Hillbilly Bone,” “All About Tonight,” and “Honey
Bee,” 2011 single that sent triple platinum around the time
The Voice hit the airwaves.

SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2016
DIERKS BENTLEY
PIEDMONT STAGE
7:45 PM - 9:00 PM
Growing up in a non-musical family in Phoenix, Arizona,
country singer Dierks Bentley got his country music
education on his own, listening to recordings. A love of the
music inspired him to move to Nashville at the age of 19,
but he quickly grew discourages but the lack of public and
professional interest coming his way. It all changed when
he walked into the Station Inn, a bar where the bluegrass
faithfully hung out.
DWIGHT YOAKAM
PONCE DE LEON STAGE
7:45 PM - 9:00 PM
With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk
and Bakersfield country, Dwight Yoakam helped return
country music to its roots in the late ‘80s. Like his idols
Buck Owen, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam
never played by Nashville’s rules; consequently, he never
dominated the charts like his contemporary Randy Travis.
Then again Travis never played around with the sound and
style of country music like Yoakam.

JASON ISBELL
PONCE DE LEON STAGE
5:45 PM - 6:45 PM
After spending six years with Southern
rock outfit Drive-By Truckers, singer/
guitarist Jason Isbell left the group in
2007 to pursue a solo career. Isbell has
already honed his songwriting skills
during his tenure with the Truckers, and
he funneled those talents into Sirens of
the Ditch, a bluesy punk-infused lesson
in guitar tones and Southern swagger
that marked his solo debt in summer
2007. Backed by a new band dubbed the
400 Unit, Isbell took his songs on the
road and soon began penning another
album, which he recorded with the 400
Unit in 2008.
THE BAND PERRY
PEACHTREE STAGE
6:45 PM - 7:45 PM

summer of 2005, although the siblings had been singing
together at home and in various configurations and bands
since their childhood years in Mobile, Alabama. Kimberly,
blessed with an expressive and fiery vocal style, joined
and fronted her first band when she was only 15 years
old, and used her brothers Reid (ten years old) and Neil
(eight years old) as roadies.

him to the label’s country division.
KIP MOORE
PIEDMONT STAGE
5:45 PM - 6:45 PM
Arriving at the peak of the so-called “bro country”
Phenomenon of the 2010s, Kip Moore’s breakthrough his
“Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck” was one of the classics of the genre:
a big, shiny tune about good times, cold beer, cute girls, ad
reliable vehicles. Once it took off in 2012, a few more hits
followed—including the equally emblematic “Beer Money”
and “Hey Pretty Girl”—but the roads weren’t always smooth:
it took him over three years and one scrapped record before
he delivered Wild Ones in the summer of 2015.

since… Her big break came in 2013 when she beat
out 2000 other singers to win the coveted spot of
performing with Sugarland at Cruzan Ampitheatre,
a place where she’d dreamed of singing since
childhood. The video from this performance helped
garner major recording and publishing company

Arguably the preeminent male country artist to emerge int eh 200s,
Brad Paisley cannily blended the past with present, paying constant
tribute to his forefathers—when he reached the top of the charts,
he still found space for Little Jimmy Dickens and George Jones in his
videos—but pushing the music forward in to the new millennium, expanding its sonic and thematic possibilities. This sense of adventure
could be heard ion 2009’s American Saturday Night, a big0eharter
and eclectic record that won crossover acclaim, but the time of its
release Paisley was already a country superstar and no stranger to
the top of the charts. American Saturday Night was his fifth number
one album on the Billboard Country charts—the streak started with
his third album, 2003’s Mud on the Tires; his first five albums all went
platinum as well—and he had 13 number one country singles, including such modern country staples as “I’m Gonna Miss Her(The Fishin’
Song),” “Mud on the Tires,” “The World,” “She’s Everything,” “Ticks,”
Online,” “Letter to Me, “ and “I’m Still a Guy”— varied collection of
songs that showcased his wry humor, hard-earned sentimentality,
and prowess as a guitarist.

OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW
PONCE DE LEON STAGE

resonator guitar), Kevin Hayes (guitjo), Morgan
Jahnig (upright bass), Ketch Secor (vocals/fiddle/
harmonica/banjo), and Willie Watson (vocals/
guitar/banjo) may specialize in rags, hollers, and

on Nirvana and Public Enemy. The quintet’s
members—who are all from different states—met in
New York, hit the road, played before an impressed
Doc Watson in front of a North Carolina pharmacy,

SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2016
JUSTIN MOORE
PEACHTREE STAGE
6:45 PM - 7:45 PM
Justin Moore hit Nashville in 2009 with
a ready-made image. He was the good
kid from a small town with a rowdy heart
of gold who just happened to be able to
sing about it. Moore had grown up in tiny
Poyen, Arkansas, where he worked on his
grandparents’ cattle farm and enjoyed an
archetypal American rural childhood.
SARA EVANS
PIEDMONT STAGE
5:45 PM - 6:45 PM
A female country traditionalist during a
time when they were quite rare around
Nashville, Sara Evans gained her RCA
contract in 1996 after her rendition of
Buck Owen’s perennial chestnut “I’ve Got a
Tiger by the Tail” impressed its songwriter,
Harlan Howard, so much that he
considered himself duty-bound to help her.
While growing up poor in rural Missouri,
Evans performed with her family’s band—
at the age of four—and even recorded in
Nashville several years later.

SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2016
RODNEY ATKINS
PONCE DE LEON STAGE
5:45 PM - 6:45 PM
ELI YOUNG BAND
PEACHTREE STAGE
4:45 PM - 5:45 PM
Fusing a young man’s take on
heartland rock with the tougher
side of Texas country music and
the cocky enthusiasm of altcountry firebrands, the Eli Young
Band have become a potent draw
in the Southwest on the strength
of local airplay and extensive
touring. The Eli Young Band’s
story began when Mike Eli and
James Young both enrolled at
the University of North Texas
and found themselves sharing
a dorm room as freshmen. Both
played guitar, and the two new
friends started writing and
singing songs together.
Though country singer Rodney Atkins
didn’t get his first guitar until one
Christmas in high school, he took to
the instrument instantly and was soon
playing anywhere he could around his
Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, home. While
at college at Tennessee Tack in Cookeville,
Atkins used the opportunity to go into
Nashville as often as he could, and by the
time he graduated, he was starting to
make himself known as a performer in the
area. In 1997, he signed to Curb Records
and was set to release his debut shortly
after but when he didn’t like the finished
results and label head Mike Curb gave
him the go-ahead to record new songs,
Atkins spent the next two years working
with various producers, engineers,
and musicians for an album that would
ultimately never see the light of day.
THE DEVIL MAKES THREE
PIEDMONT STAGE
3:45 PM - 4:45 PM
A drumerless acoustic trio consisting of two guitarists and a string bassists, the Devil
Makes Three are not your normal alt-country band. While deeply rooted in the blues and
country music, they also enthusiastically incorporate elements of bluegrass, ragtime, and
jug band traditions as well. The group also makes no bones about its punk rock influences,
and despite the lack of a drummer, it always plays with the needs of dancers in mind.
16
12
SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2016
THE CADILLAC THREE
PONCE DE LEON STAGE
3:45 PM - 4:45 PM
A high-energy trio fusing outlaw country and classic Southern rock, the Cadillac
Three are a rock band born and bred out of Nashville, Tennessee. The Cadillac Three
have their roots in the rock group American Bang, who were formed in 2005 by
lead guitarists Ben Brown, drummer Neil Mason, signer, songwriter, and guitarist
Jaren Johnston, and bassists Kelby Ray. Originally called Bang Bang Bang, the group
released an album, I Shot the King, under the name sin 2005, but switched to the
name American Bang when they signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2006.
CRACKER
PEACHTREE STAGE
2:45 PM - 3:45 PM
During Cracker’s heyday in the 1990s, the Virginia-based band
molded elements of alternative pop/rock and country into
several irreverent, buzz worthy anthems. Singer/guitarist David
Lowery made no attempt to mask his affinity for traditional
roots music, but his own background was far from traditional, as
he spent the ‘80s fronting the quirky alternative outfit Camper
Van Beethoven. Shortly after Camper Van Beethoven embarked
on a long hiatus in 1990, Lowery began demoing new material
with guitarist Johnny Hickman and bassists Davey Faragher.
CLARE DUNN
PONCE DE LEON STAGE
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
Country singer Clare Dunn cut her teeth
opening for bro country acts like Luke
Brian and Florida Georgia Line, but the
Colorado native had a tough, formidable
sound of her own, as evidenced by her
bluesy 2013 debut single “Get Out” and
its 2014 follow-up “Cowboy Side of You.”
19
SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2016
RICKY SKAGGS & KENTUCKY THUNDER
PIEDMONT STAGE
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
By the time he was in his mid-thirties, a Kentuckian Ricky
Skaggs had already produced a career’s worth of music. At
age seven he appeared on TV with Flatt & Scruggs; at 15
he was a member of legendary Ralph Stanley’s bluegrass
band (with fellow teenager Keith Whitley). None of his
‘80s peers, male or female, had better musical credentials
than Skaggs.
DRAKE WHITE AND THE BIG
PEACHTREE STAGE
1:15 PM - 2:00 PM
18
12
Born in Hokes Bluff, Alabama,
country singer and songwriter
Drake White’s mix of country, blues,
funk, rock & roll, and reggae and
his energetic, foot-stomping live
shows eventually led him to Ashville
and beyond. Growing up, he sang
in the choir at his local church, and
after getting a guitar at the age of
14 from a neighbor down the road
who played bluegrass, he began
writing and playing songs, continuing
to do so while attending Gadsen
Sate Community College and then
Auburn University, earning a degree
in building science even as he played
in the local venues at night. After
graduation, White took a job with
a general contractor in Nashville,
working by day and playing the song
rounds at night, developing, with his
band the Big Fire, a crackling and
energetic stage presence that often
found him freestyling lyrics in the
middle of songs.
SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2016
JIM WHITE vs. THE PACKWAY HANDLE BAND
PONCE DE LEON STAGE
12:30 PM - 1:15 PM
Southern Gothic singer/songwriter Jim White grew up in Pensacola, Florida,
enamored with the sounds of the white gospel music he heard on the Gospel
Jubilee television series. After spending his formative years on the outskirts
of a deeply Pentecostal community, he entertained a career as a professional
surfer, followed by a stint in Milan as a fashion model. A band saw accident that
resulted in a maimed left hand seemed to end White’s hopes as a musician, but
after writing a collection of simple songs on his guitar, a friend convinced him
to record a demo, which ultimately made its way to the offices of David Byrne’s
and Luaka Bop label.
JOHN & JACOB
PIEDMONT STAGE
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
John & Jacob, born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama
found their roots in the sounds of back-porch pickers and
harmonies of gospel singers. They’ve recently toured Europe
with Kacey Musgraves, placed their song “Be My Girl” on
the hit ABC TV show, “Nashville,” appeared at The Hangout
Festival, Bonnaroo and the Firefly Festival, along with
another brief European summer tour promoting their single,
“Ride with Me.”
