in Bunbury said more clients were approaching
the business with their own design ideas than

“They will often come in with photos and specific

said.
Ms McDonagh recommends the infulential
design website Houzz (www.houzz.com) as a
leading source of inspiration for people wishing to
redesign both interior and exterior of their homes.
“Most people are just bringing in photos on their
iPhones or iPads,” Ms McDonagh said.
Design consultant and lecturer at the South West
Institute of Technology, Marta Cholkowski said
current trends included upcycling, an eclectic mix
of items and fabrics from around the world and a
resurgence of colour.
“The ‘world traveller’ is a popular theme at the
moment with people collecting different items
from many destinations, especially items that are
raw and tribal,” she said.
“No one ‘look’ or era is predominant as houses
become more of a reflection of people’s
personalities rather than looking like a furniture
shop.”
According to Ms Cholkowski, popular colours
include jewel tones, muted jade and blue with
glamorous iridescent materials and geometrical
patterns are also in style.
“We’re also seeing a lot of upcycling and a move
toward sustainability and classical looks with a
modern touch,” Ms Cholkowski said.
The use of vintage, pre-owned items is also
something staff at G.J Gardner Homes have
noticed becoming popular in recent years.
“There’s lots of vintage items being used at the
moment,” Ms McDonagh said.
“We’re getting lots of requests for open plan
kitchens, polished concrete mixed with unique
vintage items.”

the resurgence of eclectic styling, interior design
really can be a project for anyone.

Great gardens don’t
need to be drowned
As the owner of a garden centre and irrigation contracting business
operating on the Swan Coastal Plain, one of the most common
problems our customers have is maintaining a healthy garden while
complying with our current watering restrictions.
Good soil is the foundation of a healthy and water efficient landscape
and if improved correctly you will get many years of enjoyment from
a vigorous garden easily able to comply with imposed watering
restrictions.
Sandy soils have very poor water and nutrient holding capacities
and anything that can be introduced into the soil to assist with these
deficiencies will improve the health of your garden and reduce your
water use, benefiting the environment and your budget.

Soil improvement is obviously best applied prior to planting your
gardens and lawns, and in the case of lawns even more so, because
improving your soil once the lawn is laid is extremely difficult.
Adding organic matter, preferably well composted to your sandy
soil is by far the most beneficial form of soil improvement. These
products may be sold as organic compost, soil conditioners, soil
improvers, or soil concentrates. For a healthy lawn, spread a 5 to
7.5 cm layer of organic matter and incorporate with the existing soil
to a depth of 10 -15 cm. For plants, on a hole-by-hole basis, dig a
hole a minimum depth of 30 cm or 1.5 times the pot’s height and
3 times the pot width. Remove and dispose of half the sand and
replace with organic matter and return to the hole when planting.
The next most common form of soil improvement is the use of
“soil amendments”. These products permanently change the water
and nutrient holding capacities of the sand. For sandy soils they
may include spongelite (fossilised sea sponge); zeolite; products
including bentonite and kaolin clays; and water storage granules.
0nce you have improved your soil and planted your lawn and garden
