Congratulations to Shahn Paganini and her School Ball Committee for the successful
organization of our third Year 12 School Ball at the Lord Forrest Hotel on Saturday night. This
was our largest school ball to-date with our group filling the main ballroom at the hotel. With
the number of Year 12 students continuing to increase over the next few years this is likely
to remain that way for the future. The room was decorated using the theme “Red Carpet Hollywood in Lights” and certainly looked magnificent on the night. Thank you to the students
Breeana Kenny, Ebony Poyton, Nathan Sturges, Courtney Phillips, Taygan Van Rensburg,
Kyle Harbour, Michelle Maritz and staff Conor Aitken, Tamlin Taylor, Chris Thompson and Deb
Horner who helped Shahn Paganini decorate the ballroom on Saturday morning.
The guests arrived in style with a variety of limousines, vintage cars and even the farm ute
done up with fairy lights and the guests sitting on bales of hay on the back. It certainly made
for a very spectacular entrance. The South Western Times
were there and took photos which should appear in this
week’s newspaper.
The students themselves were dressed in style and it was
hard to recognize some of them as members of our Year 12
cohort. As I announced on the night these were no longer
students but rather well dressed young adults and I must say
they behaved that way as well, although some of the dance
moves did provide a reality check at times. The night wasn’t
without its unexpected excitement with our DJ setting off the
fire alarms when he used his smoke machine for the first
time. Luckily everyone had finished their main course before
having to be ushered out to the car park for some unplanned
fresh air and star gazing, albeit in ballroom dresses, high
heels and suits.
The following students were selected by votes from the students for the various ball awards
on the night:
Best arrival: Teagan Berichon
Best dressed female: Codi Hammond
Best dancer: Harlem Ottaway
Belle: Ebony Poynton
Best dressed male: Jackie Zhang
Best couple: Jess Earl and Ethan Fallon
Best transformation: Shannon Fordyce
Beau: Jarom Park
Henderson Photographics took professional photos of each of the guests on the night and
these are available for purchase at their website www.hendersonphotographics.com
Finally thank you to the members of the ball committee who helped Mrs Paganini with the overall
organization - Breeana Kenny, Ebony Poynton, Courtney Phillips, Taygan Van Rensburg, Kyle
Harbour, Michelle Maritz, Chloe Stone, Teagan Berichon, Jess Earl and Taylah Soutter

Air-conditioning of the School
Work will commence during the Easter holidays to air-condition the original Stage 1 buildings
as part of the State Government schools air-conditioning program. This process is occurring
in all the Bunbury schools during this year. The main type of air-conditioning units will be
ducted evaporative air coolers for classrooms and large areas. The ground floor section of the
administration block, art rooms and any small offices will have reverse cycle air-conditioning
installed. Most of the work should be completed during the holiday period with some minor
works being finalised during the first few weeks of Term 2.

Sports Carnivals
Congratulations to our interschool swimming team for their efforts last Tuesday. We only had a
very small number of competitors who performed well on the day. The school team came sixth
overall and fifth for the senior school. Maddison Scott won Year 10 runner up champion girl and Jayden Horne won
Year 9 runner up champion boy. Natalie Alymore, the teacher in-charge indicated our students behaved very well and
proudly represented the college. Thanks to Natalie for her organization of the event with assistance from Phil Pense.
Congratulations to Blake Kampen and the Physical Education Department for the organization of another very
successful athletics carnival on Wednesday last week. The level of student participation and commitment was
excellent making it a very competitive and enjoyable day. This year we also changed the format of the oval bringing
the 100m track and faction bays to the western side of the oval providing a better view for both students and parent
spectators. We also spread the field events out onto the new oval giving us more room. In another first we created
the new faction names incorporating the old faction name with local animals and we created a special Meritorious
Shield which provided additional bonus points for those factions that did not win last year. These points were based
on the difference between the winning team’s final score and each factions score from last year. Oxley was the
winning faction last year and started with a score of zero for this shield while the other factions started with a bonus
score. The new factions were now competing for both the Outright Sheild and the Meritorious Sheild.
The new faction names and the final scores were:

The Hartog Falcons were too strong and this time they won both shields but they will start with a zero score for the

ANZAC Service
This year marks the 100th anniversary of ANZAC and there are many special services being held around the country
to recognize this milestone. Because local RSL clubs are heavily involved in preparations for this event they have
requested that schools hold their ANZAC services after the 25th April so that their members can join schools at
their ceremonies. Our ANZAC ceremony will be held on Tuesday 28th April in the gymnasium at 9am. Parents and
community members are welcome to join us on this day.
Safe holiday
This term has gone extremely fast especially being only a nine week term. Next term will be an eleven week term and
commences for students on Tuesday 21st April. I hope that everyone has a safe and relaxing Easter holiday break
and look forward to seeing everyone back again next term.

Specialist Cricket Program
A team from our Year 8/9 program were
up early on Monday 16 March to travel
to Narrogin to play against Narrogin
Senior High School’s (NSHS) team.
Dalyellup batted first and combined well
with a number of players contributing.
Lewis Homden made 29 runs and Jaiah
Moore 14 with Lachlan Wood making a
dashing 13 not out to finish the innings.
The team made 132 which proved to
be enough with NSHS falling just short
by 20 runs. The wickets were shared
around but Jaxon Bennison bowled with
good pace and Josh Bennett bowled
with good control and captained the
team with aplomb.
Last Friday our Year nine and ten
students were in charge of umpiring and
scoring for a primary cricket carnival at
Tuart Forest Primary School. Many of the students took on extra coaching
roles and they made a great impression with the primary students and
their teachers. Well done boys as you certainly gave our program a good
promotion with our up and coming players.
Our term finishes with our Year 10 Bunbury Big Bash where a number of
teams come from as far as Perth to play two days of cricket.
Mr Mike Knuckey
SIDE VISIT
About 20 senior students from Dalyellup College study through
SIDE (School of Isolated and Distance Education) this year.
Two SIDE tutors visited our school on Friday, 13 March 2015.
This was a great opportunity for all SIDE students to get informed
answers to their questions about the history of SIDE, their fellow
students (some of whom study with SIDE whilst travelling, living with
their parents/guardians in remote areas or overseas), and how to
make the best of this particular teaching and learning environment.
The tutors for the 3 A/B Visual Arts and 3 A/B Media Production and Analysis courses could also spend some actual
teaching time with their students.
All SIDE students as well as their tutors really appreciated the opportunity to meet face-to face.
Here are some student comments:
“It was a great experience – after meeting some tutors I feel much more confident in doing SIDE.” (Michelle)
“We were able to share our ideas and get more information about the course.” (Siphesihle)
“I would like to thank the SIDE teachers for sharing the history of SIDE with us.” (Synqaira)

Technology and Enterprise The Diverse, Hands-On, Learning Area
Year 11 and Year 12 Food Science &
Technology Students have been learning the
benefits of incorporating locally produced
food products into their meal planning. In
keeping with this theme students learnt the
art of making their own pasta and matched it
with a hand made fresh tomato sauce. While
the basic pasta recipe was identical for each
student they were encouraged to experiment
with varieties. Some students made fettucini
while others made spaghetti and farfalle.
Various dried herbs were also added to the
dough. The sauce used in season roma
tomatoes and incorporated the fresh herbs grown at the college.
While many students were envious of the special treatment teachers and parents
received at the sports carnival, students were not aware that there were others (Year 11 + 12 students and teachers)
working tirelessly, behind the scenes, to ensure that their efforts were rewarded. Mrs Clinch’s and Ms Gear’s Food
Science & Technology students, together with the
assistance of students participating in the Certificate
II Community Service course planned, prepared and
served a deluxe selection of savoury and sweet finger
foods to staff and participating parents during break
1 and break 2. The coffee machine was in overdrive
and the hardworking students worked fast and
efficiently to supply the track and field adjudicators
with refreshments.
It has truly been a team effort with the Certificate
II Community Service students, together with
assistance of the Food Science and Technology
students, devising and producing budget friendly
savoury and sweet dishes to help support the
Huriwaka Family. Each week both Community
Service classes, run by Mrs Clinch and Ms Gear, have been planning and preparing
two course dinners which have been delivered to the door of the Huriwaka Family by
Mr Chatman. This charitable project has been made possible by the kind donation from various people. While the
monetary donations have been wisely used, this term, the students would also accept primary produce which they
can incorporate into future meals.

“The 19th Performing Arts Perspectives (performed
at His Majesty’s Theatre, in Perth, on Friday the
13th of March) is a showcase that was designed to
demonstrate a peak level of creativity, discovery
and excellence in performance across Western
Australia for secondary Arts students. The skill of
the performance is designed to set the benchmark
of excellence for future students of the Arts practical
WACE exams.”
-
Chloe Barton (Year 11 Drama Student)
“The Performing Arts Perspectives is an event
dedicated to showcasing the highest achieving
students in WACE practical examination in dance,
drama and music. Each performance has been
shown in order to inspire and educate Year eleven
and Yyear twelve students who will be completing
exams just as those shown, however it is also available for viewing for the general public. The 19th annual
Perspectives was held at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth on the 13th of March, 205. Each performance incorporate
elements of drama to maximize audience engagement.”
-
Olivia Gittos (Year 11 Drama Student)
“On Friday the 13th of March 2015, I along with majority of my drama class were allowed to travel from Dalyellup
College to His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth to watch the Performing Arts Perspectives show which was made up of
two separate acts with an intermission in between. There was not one case where a performer had not left me in
absolute excitement for the next piece. What this show was able to do so well is be able to vibe off the previous
performers’ hype. The group of people who at the end took a bow as the curtain closed gave their 100% and it
showed. I am overly grateful to be able to have witnessed this great performance.”

How to help your child with their mathematics homework.
Homework can be a stressful part of a family’s week. Here are a few tips to help
make positive homework and study habits that can benefit your children long into the
future.
Start with a homework plan - Finding time to get homework done each week can be tricky between extracurricular
activities and family commitments. Try to schedule a set amount of time to do homework each day at a time that works
for both you and your kids.
Give kids a break - After a long day of school it’s recommended that kids have a short break before settling down to
do their homework. Encourage kids to play outside and burn some energy.
Set a place to do homework - Designate an appropriate place for each child to do their homework. Younger children
can benefit from doing their homework in a living area with a parent available for help, while older kids may prefer a
distraction free environment like a desk in their bedroom or in the study
Don’t be too helpful – It’s important to support your child with their homework, but don’t do it for them. When children
first start school, you will need to be more involved in their homework as they may need help to read and understand
instructions. Focus on explaining to them what the question is asking, rather than answering the questions. As kids
get older they may need some assistance to get them on the right track. No matter the age, remember homework
is about developing independent learners. Encourage your children to work on their homework as independently as
possible from the start.
Ask the right questions – If your child is having trouble with a maths question, rather than taking over, ask questions
to allow your child to explain the problem they are working on. This can help you to identify their area of confusion.
Some good questions to ask are:
•
What is the problem you’re working on?
•
What does the question say?
•
Are there any words in the question that you don’t understand?
•
Where do you think you should begin?
•
Can you find some help in your textbook or notes?
•
What have you done so far?
•
Is there anything that you already know that might help with this particular problem?
Remember -Beyond the important curriculum outcomes, working independently on homework helps children to
develop crucial problem solving skills. It’s important children learn how to seek out answers without assistance from
parents and teachers. Encourage children to use the countless resources available within Mathletics.
Support provided by the college –Homework help classes are held at the college on Mondays and Thursdays during
first break. Students must bring their mathematics homework or have study to complete to attend. Experienced staff
members are available to assist students with completing their homework.
