Expectations for EISCAT-3D data
• Data from EISCAT-3D is important to
UiB for 2 of our 4 focus areas:

– Meso-scale
imaging
of the
E/F-regions
– Profiles of the D-region (and lower)
• EISCAT-3D data requirements:
– Continuous measurements of D/E/Fregions at low data rate (vertical profiles)
– Measurements of F-region in full 3D over
the entire field of view (<1 minute time
resolution, <20x20 km spatial resolution)
7
Location of EISCAT-3D
• Svalbard and Andøya have been, and
will continue to be, our main field sites

• The ESR
is expected
to remain
instrument in the near future, followed
by the VHF looking vertical or towards
Svalbard
• We therefore support that the new
EISCAT-3D site should have coverage
over Svalbard and/or Andøya!
8
Contributions for EISCAT-3D
• UiB has a large pool of students, and
we use EISCAT data for thesis work

and field
courses
and
Andøya
• UiB honors UiT for their initiative of
getting E3D on the ESFRI roadmap
– UiB supports fully a broader national
involvement in the E3D project
– UiB is willing to take part and play a more
active role in E3D (and EISCAT in general)
– UiB is currently building up its capacity
towards EISCAT research and education
