This tall stone, close to the north wall of Olav’s Church, is said to signify that the Day of Judgement will come when the point finally touches the church wall. The gap is currently 9.2 cm … Visnes Mine Area. In its day, the copper mine at Visnes was the largest and most modern in Northern Europe. The Museum depicts operation of the mine from 1865 – 1972. Skudeneshavn is a still-thriving, real-life 19th Century clipper town. A walk down Søragadå immerses you in all the charm of the Empire style homes and cottages of “South Street”. The Museum in Mælandsgården, Skudeneshavn. This old mansion serves up the town’s rich history in authentic surroundings. Fishing, herring salting, trade and shipping have been the pillars of Skudeneshavn life for almost two centuries. The Museum helps explain how these forces have moulded the town. This interesting collection, situated in the fishing harbour, has displays of many artefacts and photographs of bygone days, when Karmøy was a leading fishing hub, and links with America were close. T: +47 52 81 74 27, www.grunnviken.no The Five Poor Maidens, Norheim. Five tall stones stand beneath the high arch of the Karmsund Bridge. This star-shaped grave site dates from roughly 300 AD. Within the stones a bronze vessel containing charred human bones and bears’ claws was excavated. Haugaland Zoo,Torvastad. This 10-acre zoo contains about 250 animals, birds and reptiles so far. These Burial Mounds dating from the Bronze Age stand proud atop the Reheia moors. Known as the Pyramides of the North, they count among the finest relics of the age in Norway. Boathouses at Hop, Ferkingstad. The foundations of these large buildings can be seen on the Iron Age King Ferking Farm. Follow the marked Scenic Heritage Path to Åkrehamn. Fishermen´s memorial, Ferkingstad. This memorial was erected in remembrance of the fishermen of Karmøy lost at sea in American waters. Syreneset Fort, Syre. This World-War II defence installation was used during the Occupation to watch over and control important shipping lanes. HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS YACHT HARBOURS The Karmøy countryside is attractive and diverse with many opportunities to get outdoors and be active or simply relax: www.haugalandet.friskifriluft.no Skudeneshavn, Åkrehamn and Kopervik all have facilities for visiting yachts with showers, WC and laundry. The harbours are conveniently placed in the town centres. Lindøy Recreation Area. A magical setting in Førdesfjorden, just south of Røyksund. The island is circled by nature trails through undulating, changing landscapes. Lindøy is a popular berry-picking destination in late summer. The mainland side of Karmøy features attractive countryside and historic relics. Ferkingstad and Åkra. The designated Scenic Heritage Path connects historical sites along an attractive nature trail. Feøy. The tiny island of Feøy is renowned for its intricate pattern of coves and canals, idyllic recreational areas and bathing beach. Round Skudenes - A wonderful bike tour around South Karmøy by country road and coastal path. North Sea Route - follow the Viking roads by bike. A long-range bike trail that extends from Kristiansand in the south to Haugesund in the north.
