BLUFFTON — For the past few
seasons, Bluffton has had experienced
seniors to lean on as it started the
season.
This year, not so much.
The Pirates graduated 13 seniors.
Each one started on offense or defense
at some point a season ago.
Bluffton started 4-2 and the Pirates
were in the mix atop the Northwest
Conference and region 18 before finishing 5-5 overall and 3-5 in the NWC.
One place Bluffton will not be completely inexperienced is at quarterback
where sophomore Robbie Stratton will
lead the Pirates’ spread after starting
the final six games of 2011.
Playing in meaningful games down
the stretch will be a huge benefit for
Stratton.
“We started a freshman week
five and he finished out the season,”
Lee said. “Hopefully, with those five
games that he got under his belt as a
freshman, we don’t have to go through
that learning curve with him and it
will be able to open up the playbook
for us.”

Stratton, who passed for 502 yards,
two touchdowns and five interceptions, agrees.
“My reads are a lot better. I have
better vision of which receivers to pick
out and which routes are going to be
open,” Stratton said. “I can start reading the defense before the play starts.”
Helping Stratton will be an offensive line that returns a few experienced players.
Seniors David Emans and Taylor
Reineke are returning starters at
guard.
“We’ve got three or four kids that
we have rotated through there at various times and we will look to them
for some leadership on that offensive
front,” Lee said.
Jonah Bourassa, a shifty junior
back, is also back in the backfield after
a strong finish a season ago.
The big question offensively is who
will catch the ball.
Four of Bluffton’s top pass catching
threats were lost to graduation. The
plan is to rotate a bunch of players
into those spots and see who steps up.

According to Lee, the Northwest Conference will be the most
competitive that it has been in
quite awhile. Plus with the rivalry
game at Cory-Rawson and a tough
non-conference game with Carey,
Bluffton will have to play well week
in and week out. If Stratton can
make some plays in the passing
game and limit mistakes and the
defense can do a better job of stopping the run, maybe the Pirates
can pull off a winning season.

CAREY — This year’s Carey football team will be a work in progress.
The dominant color at Wentling
Field won’t be Carey blue and white,
it’s going to be green.
There are a lot of young players
who will be cast in starting roles.
“This is probably the youngest and
the smallest overall team we’ve had in
the last five or six years,” said six-year
Carey coach Todd Worst.
“These guys are young. Some of
the sophomore kids are still immature.
You start comparing 18 -year-olds to
15- and 16-year--olds and there’s a big
difference.
“It’s going to take some mistakes
for them to get better. We’re going to
be a lot better in game 3 and game 4
than we are going to be in game 1.”
The Blue Devils lost a big and
talented senior class that posted an
8-3 record, losing to Liberty Center
in the opening round of the Division
V, Region 18 playoffs.

Graduation hit Carey hard on both
sides of the football, too, so getting
the youngsters up to speed as quickly
as possible has been a priority during
the preseason.

WEAKNESSES: Numbers can
be a blessing and a curse. Those
21 sophomores are going to be
counted on to play right away
and none have varsity experience. The Blue Devils are much
smaller than they’ve been in the
past which could make it a little
more difficult to execute their
smash-mouth style of offense and
defense.

BLOOMDALE — With a new football stadium and a young first-year
head coach with new ideas, the operative word around Elmwood season is
“change”.
Brian Cooper takes over for Elmwood grad Vic Meyer, who stepped
aside in January after posting a 12-18
record in three seasons.
Cooper brings a wealth of coaching experience to the program. The
2002 Swanton graduate was a student
intern with Ohio State for two seasons. He spent two years as an assistant at Swanton, a year as a student
intern at the University of Toledo, followed by stints as an assistant at Rossford and Bryan the last two seasons.
Cooper also brings a bundle of
enthusiasm in an effort to elevate an
Elmwood program that hasn’t had a
winning record since 2008.
“The biggest thing we’re trying to
do is instill a positive attitude in our
kids,” Cooper said.
“We’re focusing on positive thinking and working hard. Like I told the

kids from day one, if you give us the
effort and take the coaching you’re
given, the wins will take care of themselves.
“The kids have to realize that
things in life are going to be tough;
football is going to be tough. But you
can’t let one play affect the entire
game.”
Having senior Zach Foster (6-foot1, 170 pounds) for his second season
at quarterback will certainly help the
Royals’ transition.
Foster threw for 908 yards and five
touchdowns with 14 interceptions. He
added three scores on the ground.
“I like the flexibility with the weapons we have on offense,” Cooper said.
“Zach Foster at quarterback gives our
offense a lot of different looks. He can
sell the run like nobody’s business and
at the same time he can throw the ball
to a number of different receivers.”

before players feel comfortable
in their roles in Elmwood’s new
offensive and defensive schemes.
Depth could also be a concern.
With just 38 players on the roster
the Royals may be outmanned in
some NBC games, particularly
against powerhouses Eastwood
and Genoa.

FOSTORIA — Although the program may have fallen on rough times,
Fostoria’s football team is steeped in
tradition.
So when the head coaching job
opened this summer, Jim Kelly,
formerly the head coach at Lakota,
jumped at the opportunity to lead the
Redmen.
“There’s a lot of tradition here and
that always pushes us, pushes the players,” Kelly said. “We’re excited about
every week, every opportunity, win
or lose, because it’s an opportunity to
get better and to build our program.”
Kelly wasn’t hired until late May,
but he is pleased with the turnout at
weight lifting and conditioning over
the summer.
That enthusiasm has carried over
into the preseason.
“We’re making good strides every
day, getting better,” Kelly said.
If pressed to describe his offensive scheme, Kelly categorizes it as a
spread. But he’s instituting a number
of things to give the Redmen options
and utilize their strengths. Fostoria
will primarily run the ball.

“I think (we have) a good core
group of seniors that have good experience,” Kelly said. “We have some
real good athletes on the team.”
Kelly is confident that his quarterbacks, senior and three-year starter
Adonis Cousin and sophomore Dominique Fuller, have the skill and playmaking ability to run the new offense.
“Adonis understands the speed of
the game, the physicality of the game,”
Kelly said.
Cousin feels the Redmen have
adapted well to the changes and are
poised to improve on last year’s 5-5
record that included a 5-2 mark in the
Northern Buckeye Conference.
“We like the offense that we’re running and we look forward to coach
Kelly putting us in position to win
games,” Cousin said.
“We have a lot of multiple sets. We
run I-formation, spread, it’s just a variety of different things.”

FOSTORIA — First-year Fostoria
St. Wendelin head coach Jim Bodart
is settling into his new job as well as
could be expected under the circumstances.
He was hired late in the summer to
coach a program struggling with numbers and moving into a new league.
Bodart replaces Bill Hrabak, who
lost his teaching job at St. Wendelin
due to staff cuts and subsequently
resigned as football coach.
As Bodart sees it, the key to keeping things flowing is being positive.
“The seniors have done a fantastic
job of staying positive,” Bodart said.
“They’re the ones who were with the
other staff the longest and they’ve
been exceptionally positive and exceptionally willing to learn and listen and
accept.”
Senior quarterback and outside
linebacker Zach Miller says the team
is adapting well.
“At first everybody was kind of
hesitant, but now everything is going
pretty smoothly, I’d say,” Miller said.
“It’s all going pretty good.”
Among the changes Bodart has
instituted are a new offensive scheme
and extensive conditioning.
“We are going to be running a lot of
different offensive looks with focus on
ball control and clock control,” Bodart
said. “We’ll be running some power
I, some wing-T, and then also bring it
back to a lot of the shotgun that they
had some success with last year.”
Conditioning will be critical for the
Mohawks. With just 14 players on the
roster, each performer will be playing
both ways.
Defensively, the Mohawks are
going to be running a 4-4, similar to
what was used last season.
“With our kids’ size — we’re not an
exceptionally large team, physically
— our defense is going to be a very
mobile group,” Bodart said. “We’re
going to move around a lot, try to keep
everybody moving, keep everybody
guessing.”
Miller has some experienced players joining him in the backfield with
senior Austin Reinhart and junior
Brad Buhrow at the running backs
and junior Cole Williams at halfback.
Newcomers likely to see time in the
backfield are junior Brady Rutter and
freshmen Justin Wagner and Sheldon
Doogs.
On the offensive line are veterans
Zach Gillett, a senior, juniors Trent
Whetsel and Caleb Colburn, sophomores Rob Park and Donovan Scudder, and newcomers Davy Smith, a
senior, and junior Austin Turner.

Snyder, who played last year at
6-4 and 315 pounds, epitomizes the
weight-room commitment made in the
off season. He’s grown an inch, lost 40
pounds and improved his bench press
to around 300 pounds.
“I feel I got quicker, stronger and I
have a lot more energy,” Snyder said.
For his size, Snyder is also one of
the quickest players on the team, and
unbeaten at a five-dot drill used to
improve players’ agility. He’s taken
on all challengers, including Ishmael,
North Baltimore’s top running back
and a returning first-team all-league
standout.
“I toasted him pretty bad,” Snyder
said with a smile.
“I tell him all the time he has a gift
a lot of other kids do not have,” Woodruff said. “One on one, I don’t think
there’s anybody he can’t block.”
Ishmael rushed for 1,173 yards,
averaged 6.9 yards per carry and
scored 20 touchdowns a year ago.
“I did pretty well my sophomore
year (553 yards, 7 TDs), so I knew
teams would be keying on me,” said
Ishmael, a tough runner who is getting Division I college interest as a
wrestler.
“I was ready for it. I’m ready for
it this year, too, but we’ll be passing
more, we’ll have more outside plays
instead of going straight up off guard
or off tackle. I think we’re going to be
more balanced.”

NORTH BALTIMORE — When
Dino Woodruff whistles his North
Baltimore football team together, he
doesn’t see the numbers he saw a year
ago.
Where Woodruff doesn’t see quantity, though, he sees quality.
“I think we will be a lot more competitive,” said Woodruff, entering the
second year of his second stint as head
coach.
“We’re in much better shape than
last year, we tackle way better ... I
think we’re much farther ahead than
where we were at this time a year ago.”
Football is often a numbers game,
especially at a small school. And with
24 players from the top four grades in
uniform, that’s a fact of life Woodruff
is very much aware of.
“I told every kid we have that
offensively and defensively they have
to learn two positions,” Woodruff
said. “We have to stay healthy. We
can’t afford to lose anybody. That’s
just the way it is.”
North Baltimore went 1-6 in Midland Athletic League play and 3-7
overall last season. That matched the
school’s best finish since a 6-4 record
in 2005, the third and final season
of Woodruff’s first go-round as head
coach.
Woodruff is reverting to that 2005
season in many ways, especially when
it comes to defense.
“Last year we ran a 4-3 and we
probably shouldn’t have,” Woodruff
said of a defense that allowed 32.9
points a game, seventh in the eightteam MAL.
“Back in ’05 we ran a five-man front
and had the MAL’s second- or thirdbest total defense, so we’re going back
to that. We’re going to bring people,
too. I like to blitz. That’s what we do
best and the kids like doing that.”

for 235 yards while adding 355 yards
and four scores on the ground. Mobus
played in just six games, but showed
flashes of big-play potential by averaging 25 yards on three receptions.
There’s plenty of beef up front.
Austin Hoiles (6-2, 210) and Justin
Krouse (6-2, 290) are sizable tackles
to go along with 6-4, 220-pound senior
center Mica Robinson. Cooper also
singled out the play of senior Michael
Meeker (6-0, 215) at guard.
“Michael Meeker has really come
into his own,” Cooper said. “He’s a
real quiet kid but if you tell him to run
through the wall, he’ll do it for you.
“Mica Robinson is coming along
nicely, too. And then we have Justin
Kraus. When he decides he wants to
play to his ability I don’t think there’s

a defense that gave up more than 30
points per game.
Senior Taylor Meiring (5-10, 170)
will be the anchor at middle linebacker
in a 3-5 set. He was last year’s team
leader in tackles (60 stops, 5 sacks).
The secondary should also be solid
with Arnold (39 tackles), Mobus (42
tackles) and Foster returning.
Cooper is hoping that his Royals
get the program back on track and to
a point where they are a consistent
NBC contender.
“Some programs can talk about the
playoffs, some can talk about making
the state final four. We’re probably
not there yet. We’re not going to talk
league championship but we think
we’re in position to spoil someone’s
league championship,” Cooper said.
“This is the first step.”
Mohawks Little
is returning to its 50 scheme with a
concerted effort on stopping the run.
“Hopefully, with the kids we have
got, it is made for those types of kids,
quicker kids up front,” Lee said. “We
get some movement and hopefully
apply a little more pressure than in
years past.”
Seniors Austin Devier, Emans and
Landon Sturgill return to the middle
of Bluffton’s five-man front. Sturgill
and Emans made 43 and 37 tackles,
respectively, Devier led the team with
four sacks.
Graduation hit Bluffton equally
hard on defense, especially at linebacker and in the secondary, where
the Pirates’ lone returnee Noah Stratton is sidelined for half of the season
with a broken collarbone.
Luginbuhl will start between
outside linebackers Reineke and Zac
Wilson.
“We are very young, very young at
linebacker,” Lee said. “We are looking
at four or five kids in the secondary
to step up because it is entirely new.”
Bourassa, Alt, Andrew Lee and
Stratton will compete at cornerback,
while Braden Skillter and Mitchell
Ault will battle at safety.
Although Bluffton will be an
awfully young and inexperienced
team, sometimes new players can
bring a fresh dose of excitement to
the program.
“These kids have been real receptive to everything that we have been
doing both offensively and defensively,” Lee said. “You have to believe
in what you are doing and hopefully
you will reap the rewards for that.”

After a year as an independent, the
Mohawks have joined the Christian

who are home-schooled or those who
attend schools that do not offer football.

15. The Mohawks will not be eligible

kind of an undersized lineman but he
worked hard and did things the right
way and earned his spot. He leads by
example,” Worst said. “Alex is a real
nice kid but when he goes out there
and plays, he’s got a little mean streak
in him.”
On offense, Carey’s back in its alltoo-familiar wishbone set.
Tschanen is the lone returnee in
the backfield after rushing for 729
yards and earning first-team all-league
honors.

But it won’t be all Tschanen. As
always, Worst hopes to spread the
wealth when Carey runs the football.
“Several sophomores are going to
play with Austin, like Levi Smalley
(5-9, 185) and Brian Powers (5-11,
150) at halfback. Brandon Zechman
(5-9, 160), a junior halfback, will be in
there too. We’ll probably have three or
four guys rotate,” Worst said.
“We’ll have a little more speed than
maybe we have had in the past. We
were consistent. This year we’ll have a
little less consistency but a little more
game-breaking quickness.”
Junior Matt Holsinger (5-9, 165),
a backup to Orians last season, looks
to take over at quarterback. Meek and
senior Tyler Stoops (5-11, 151) can
also play the position.
Mullholand is the lone returning
player on the offensive line.
Despite the inexperience, don’t
look for any drastic changes in the
Blue Devils’ approach.
“If we get a lead and are having
success, I’m not going to change. It’s
been ingrained in me for years that if
you gain four yards, its a successful
play. Four times four is 16 and that’s
plenty,” Worst said.
“We might have to adjust our style
a little to suit our kids. We’re not going
to throw the ball all over the field,
we’re going to line up and hit people.”

“I believe we’ve got a good secondary on defense,” Hampton said.
“We’ve got all upperclassmen back
there. We’re good up front defensively,
so we’ll be good in rush defense as
well.”
One of the challenges facing Kelly
was discord within the team. Kelly
instituted rules both on and off the
field.
“They understand it,” Kelly said.
“We’re just teaching the responsibility
that comes with being involved in a
program and following the rules and
the consequences if you don’t.”

(6-2, 260) and Billy Couch (6-0, 220)

a lot of experience as well, including
Ferguson at corner, Hampton at free
safety, Robinson and Couch at the
ends and junior Tony Mauricio (5-10,
160), Sanchez and sophomore Alex
Navarro (6-0, 215) at linebacker.
Senior David Cook (6-0, 155)
rejoins the team after taking his junior
year off and will likely play cornerback. Junior tackles Deante Lincoln

“I think we depend on each other
more,” Hampton said. “We put our
trust in each other and everybody

OTTAWA — The football scales
are tipping in Ottawa-Glandorf’s
favor.
The way Ken Schriner sees it,
though, that’s not going to alter his
preparation one iota.
“In the past, we were always the
little guys so we had to go out and
prove ourselves,” Schriner said.
“Now we’re the big guys, but that
doesn’t change anything. We still have
to go out and prove ourselves every
time out.”
Ottawa-Glandorf is the smallest of
the 10 schools in the Western Buckeye
League. But the Titans are hoping for
a huge season thanks to a big, experienced offensive line that averages
almost 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds.
“We think we can move people,”
said Schriner, an all-Ohio lineman
during his prep career at Tiffin Calvert who played for Bowling Green
State University.
“But at the same time, everybody
is going to look at that offensive line,
start bringing eight, nine guys up
inside and dare you to throw the ball.

That’s our challenge.”
Five senior veterans, including two
all-WBL selections, return to anchor
O-G’s offensive line. Matt Samuelson
(6-3, 225) was a first-team all-league
pick at guard and 6-5, 250-pound
tackle Wyatt Karhoff was a secondteam pick on both offense and defense
(45 tackles, 5 for losses, 2 sacks).
Tanner Hohenbrink (6-2, 285)
returns at the other tackle and Jacob
Wells, (5-11, 185) at guard. Six-five,
290-pound senior Derek Rieman, a
four-year letterman who started at
guard last season until being sidelined
by an injury, moves to center.
“We think it’s a great move. We feel
it’s a much better position for him and
he really looks good there,” Schriner
said.

HAMLER — Patrick Henry has
led the Northwest Ohio Athletic
League in total offense nine of the
past 10 seasons.
When it came to analyzing the
2012 season, though, defense was
the first topic Bill Inselmann wanted
to talk about.
“I usually don’t start with defense,”
said Inselmann, who begins his 22nd
season as PH head coach with a
184-58 career record.
“But we have seven starters back
and if we can stay healthy, and that
will be critical for us, I think our
defense will be very good.”
Inselmann’s West Coast offense has
become a staple of one of northwest
Ohio’s top gridiron programs, helping Patrick Henry win eight NWOAL
championships in the past 10 years.
The Patriots are 113-17 over the
last decade, including an undefeated
(15-0) Division V state championship
season in 2005.
Offensively, PH should be strong
again.

who accounted for 1,934 yards and 28
touchdowns.
“Imagine what we can do if we
have a good defense to go with that,”
Inselmann said.
Inselmann likes what he sees on
the defensive side.
And with good reason.
“We don’t have big, slow kids.
“Our starters are very quick,
they’re athletic and they’re tough
kids,” Inselmann said.
“One thing I really like is that we
have a little bit of experience everywhere.
“I think we have a real good
defensive interior led by Colt Pettit.
We have Jake Carrizales, a dominant
defensive end.
“We have Keith Palmer, a firstteam all-league linebacker. And I think
our secondary, if we can stay healthy,
can be as good a secondary as we’ve
had in quite a while.”
Pettit, whose brother Cody is an
offensive lineman at Central Michigan, is a 6-foot-4, 248-pound junior
who has received offers from two Big
Ten and three Mid-American Conference schools.

MOUNT BLANCHARD —Since
Riverdale’s last playoff appearance in
2008, it hasn’t been a lack of talent
that has kept the Falcons from a postseason berth.
Instead, the barrier has been a collective lack of focus on team goals.
Four years ago, Riverdale finished
the regular season at 8-2 before dropping its first round playoff game to
Pandora-Gilboa. Since then, the Falcons finished 5-5 in 2009 and 2010
and 2-8 last year.
This season, the focus is back on
what is best for the team and that is a
return to the playoffs.
“We flatlined the past few years,
I’ll give you that,” said Riverdale head
coach Jeremy Kloepfer. “We talked to
(the players) about how they can’t be
jealous. It has to be about what is best
for the team.
“We are one and that is our
approach to everything. This year, it’s
all about the team. That is where we

will improve. Getting into the playoffs
and winning the North Central Conference Silver Division are definitely
not out of the picture.”
Senior James Scott, who made
the move from running back to wide
receiver during the summer, credited
much of that renewed focus on experience. Last year, Riverdale came out
of summer camp with five players
on the team with varsity experience.
This year, the Falcons return 10 play-
ers that started 10 games at the same
position.
“Our goal is to get to the playoffs,”
Scott said. “In a lot of games last year,
we didn’t really start playing until the
second half. This year, we have to stay
together, play a whole game from the
get-go and finish games out.”

coach Jake Moyer has more talent and
experience than he has had in his four
years at Upper Sandusky.
It’s now time for the Rams to put
it together on the field.
The Rams’ offensive and defensive
lines last season were dominated by
underclassmen.
“You know how I knew we were
young? I looked at our players on the
field and checked the hair on their
legs and checked the hair on the
other team’s legs and knew we were
in trouble,” joked Moyer, who’s seen
it all in his 35-year coaching career.
“That’s telling, when you see kids
on the other team with gorilla hair
on their legs and our kids with little
spindly legs. But we ended up 5-5 and
our kids progressively got better.”
The Rams finished their first
season in the North Central Conference with a 3-4 mark.

it’s time to pick up a few more wins.
“I thought in losing to the teams
that were just better than us we played
pretty well,” Moyer said. “We played
pretty well at times in all of those
games,” Moyer said.
Junior Tyler Pritchard led the
offense at quarterback (84 of 166
passes, 1,159 yards, 8 TDs, 7 INTs;
590 yards rushing, 8 TDs) and was
the Rams’ leading tackler with 98
stops at linebacker.
“We’re going to probably throw a
little more because we don’t want to
get Tyler too beat up early in the year.
We need more consistency on offense.
Tyler has to make better decisions,”
Moyer said.
“There’s no mystery to this, we’re
going to spread you out and we’re
going to run the ball.”

archrival Carey. Beat the Blue
Devils and Colonel Crawford
and a 3-0 start heading into the
NCC schedule is a real possibility.
Upper Sandusky didn’t get much
respect in the NCC media poll in
which they were picked fourth in
the Black Division. Beating one or
all of the teams picked above them
— Wynford, Galion and Ontario
— would be the shot in the arm the
program needs to be recognized as
an NCC contender.

off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons,
an impressive stretch for a running
back who plays within an offense that
leans heavily on an air attack.
Ada’s senior standout is poised for
another big season, and his role could
be even more vital.
“I’m going to have to step up and
be even better than I was last year,”
Decker said. “We have a new quarterback and I’ll do what I can to help take
the pressure off.”
Decker rushed for 1,119 yards and
14 touchdowns in 2011 and is one of
six returning offensive starters.
Ada head coach Mike Fell is confident either senior Mason Acheson or
junior Matt Wilcox will do just fine
running the Bu9lldogs’ spread offense,
especially with several key receivers
back. But it’s comforting to know that
his offense features a legit running
threat as well.
“Decker has had two great years
and he should get a few more carries
this year,” Fell said. “We will take
what the defense gives us but we are
expecting Kellen to have another big
season.”
The Bulldogs finished 9-3 overall
and 6-2 in the Northwest Conference.
Their dream of sharing the NWC title
was crushed in a 56-14 loss to Lima
Central Catholic in the final game of
the regular season.
Ada advanced to the postseason
and beat Tri-County North 49-12
before falling 41-14 to eventual Division VI state champion Marion Local.
Fell has guided the Bulldogs to five
consecutive winning seasons.
“Our goal every year is to win a
conference championship,” Fell said.
“We want to be in the playoffs, too,
and our kids are confident and used
to winning. Success breeds success.”
Acheson (26 of 32 passes, 262
yards) is expected to be the starting
quarterback after backing up Konnor
Baker last season.
“You can’t ease into being a quarterback at this level,” Fell said. “You
have to be ready to throw the ball 30
times a game and not turn the ball
over. Mason is a good athlete and I’m
confident he will be successful.”
Jacob Ansley will one of the top targets. The senior wide receiver caught
55 passes for 1,189 yards and 22 TDs.
Wilcox made 33 catches for 571 yards
and 6 TDs.
Decker (34 catches, 404 yards, 2
TDs) and senior wide receiver Micah
Roberson (30, 367, 4) helped fuel an
offense that cranked out 43.4 points
per game.
The Bulldogs return two offensive
lineman in seniors Eli Roberson and
Brent Numbers. Sophomores Noah
Bass, Levi Beach and Dylan Hannah,
are frontrunners for the other starting
jobs along the line.
“We have a very good group of skill
athletes back, maybe the best we’ve
had in the time I’ve been here,” Fell
said. “Our offensive line is young but
they will get better with experience.
Overall, we are in pretty good shape.”
It looks like Ada is also in good
shape defensively as eight starters
are back from a unit that allowed 26.2
points per outing.
Leading the way is Ansley, a linebacker who racked up 120 tackles,
second only to the graduated Christopher Beaschler.
Sophomore linebacker Luke Long
is coming off of a season in which he
tallied 75 tackles. Eli Roberson, a
defensive end, finished with 54 tackles
while defensive backs Micah Roberson
and Wilcox tallied 51 and 49 tackles,
respectively.
Junior end Austin Dumbaugh
(46 tackles), sophomore tackle Lane
Nitchie (35) and junior tackle Saed
Al-Olimat (17) are all key returnees
as well. Dumbaugh and Ansley each
had five sacks.
“We have a lot of experience back
and I also like the young kids we
have,” Fell said. “We don’t have a lot
of size but we are athletic. We’ll do
a lot of movement up front and take
some chances.”
The Bulldogs will go into the
season seeking their first NWC championship since 2009 and Ansley is as
driven as anyone to help make that
happen.
“We are definitely motivated
because winning the conference is
one of our main goals,” Ansley said.
“We have to take it game by game and
can’t look ahead. We know if we put
the work in, we can get the job done.”

Schafer is thrilled about having the
opportunity to coach high school football at Columbus Grove.
After all, he is taking over a program that has a history of success,
that includes a state championship
in 2003.
“This is a great place to be. There
is a lot of history and a lot of tradition
here,” Schafer said. “I’m not walking
into a program where I have to rebuild
it. I am walking into a program where
I just have to help take it to the next
level.”
The Bulldogs finished 7-3 overall
and 5-3 in the Northwest Conference
last year, missing out on the postseason for the second consecutive year.
Schafer is ready to make sure
Grove ends the drought. He has experience with taking a team to the playoffs, leading Cory-Rawson to a 2009
postseason berth, one year after the
Hornets finished 3-7.
Schafer spent four seasons at C-R.
“Everyone has bought into the
system here,” Schafer said. “The players learned a lot over the summer and
you can tell in just the first days of
camp that they have gotten better.
They are ready to work hard to be
successful.”
The Bulldogs have have leaned
heavily on running the football in the
past, but the offense will look a little
different as CG shifts to a spread formation.
Senior quarterback Collin Grothaus has no problem with the change.
“It’s different getting used to a new
offense, but it fits me well,” Grothaus
said. “It allows me to take advantage
of my speed and coach is definitely
doing a good job of getting us ready
to run it.”
Grothaus is one of 10 returning
seniors.
Senior running back Dakota Vogt
(179 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns)
will anchor the running game while
sophomore Joey Warnecke will see
time in the backfield.
The Bulldogs return several wide
receivers but will be without senior
Derek Rieman most of the season.
Rieman (28 catches, 747 yards, 9
TDs), the top receiver a year ago,
came down on his foot awkwardly in
a non-contact drill and broke it.

BASCOM — In a way, Jeremy
Nutter’s third season as coach of the
Hopewell-Loudon Chieftains is a lot
like the first.
Two years ago, the Chieftains were
faced with replacing 11 seniors who
had led a charge into the second round
of the playoffs. With just six seniors
on that team, Hopewell-Loudon did
manage a 6-4 record but narrowly
missed the postseason.
Nutter’s second Chieftains club,
featuring 13 seniors, went 10-0 in the
regular season and won the Midland
Athletic League championship before
falling in the first round of the playoffs.
Nutter believes that this year’s
group is better-bolstered to absorb
the effects of heavy graduation losses
than his first H-L squad.
“This year we have 11 (seniors),”
he said. “They’ve all been here. I told
them the other day, ‘You’ve been here
through your freshmen year when you
went 9-3 and your sophomore year
when you were 6-4 and you didn’t
make the playoffs,’” Nutter said. “Last
year, you saw a 10-0 season and lost
in the first round. You’ve seen the full
range of how things go, depending on
how well we execute our jobs.’
“I think they’re mentally prepared.
When you play behind a good senior
class like that, you find yourself standing on the sideline a lot and I think
you’re chomping at the bit, waiting for
your chance to get out there. I know
our seniors are dying to play underneath our lights and I’m expecting
great things from them.”
The Chieftains’ graduates include
quarterback Tyler Tyree (1,747 yards
passing, 20 touchdowns; 721 yards
rushing and 12 TDs). Logan Sendelbach’s 60 catches for 739 yards and
nine TDs paced a group of four senior
wideouts who snared 139 passes.
But there’s no woe-is-me attitude
in camp.
“Our margin for error and our
depth are not what they were a year
ago, but I don’t think the ceiling’s any
lower than it was,” Nutter said. “We’re
just going to need to be more crisp and
more precise.”
Among the senior leaders are
Brock Hill and Brandon Molotla, a
pair of top-flight of defensive ends.
Other key, experienced senior
returnees include wide receiver/safety
Mark Bouillon and wide receiver/
placekicker Kevin Coppus (5 FGs, 47
PATs).
Nutter called Hill, Molotla, Bouillon and Coppus “kind of the core
group of seniors who we’ll really look
to lead us.”
Nutter thinks his spread offense
should be well equipped the run the
ball effectively and consistently.
“I feel like this might be the first
time in my three years here that we
can say maybe the best part of our
football team is the five guys who line
up up front,” he said.
The Chieftains’ offensive line,
which will average 217 pounds per
man, will have senior Coltan Hossler at center, juniors Adam Foos and
Weston Hill at guard and senior
Molotla and Brock Hill at the tackles.
Nutter looks for his fastest player,
junior Cody Malone, to handle the
tailback position. Senior Alec Gregg
(24 of 52 passes, 416 yards, 4 TDs,
3 INTs) will step in at quarterback.
Gregg’s top targets at wideout will be
seniors Bouillon and Brennon Boes
and junior Jordan Stewart.
With Brock Hill and Molotla back
at the defensive ends, Weston Hill will
be at nose guard and Foos will line up
at tackle. Bouillon and Malone will be
the inside linebackers with Stewart
and junior Zach Clouse on the outside.
Coppus and Boes will be the cornerbacks and junior Ben Bodart will
be the safety.
The entire mix makes for a group
that Nutter feels should vie for the
MAL title and a playoff bid.
“When you play football here, that’s
the idea,” he said. “I don’t think that’s
meant to be said with arrogance. I
think that’s part of tradition. Part of
tradition is watching what the people
who have gone before you do and then
doing what it takes to achieve success
— being willing to work for it.”

backs returning in Gabe Jones (673
yards, 13 TDs), Hernandez (371
yards, 3 TDs), Anderson Okuley
(303 yards, 4 TDs), Calvin Palmer
(278 yards, 4 TDs), Nathan Andonian (166 yards, 4 TDs) and Brandon
Cole (143 yards).
Okuley (1,065 yards passing, 6
TDs) and Jones (457, 3 TDs) shared
time at quarterback.
This season, Jones will be the man
under center.
“Two reasons,” Inselmann said.
Woodruff
Woodruff is tweaking the offense,
looking for more balance than a onedimensional attack that ran the ball
90-95 percent of the time and accumulated only 166 total yards passing.
“We’re going to the Pistol Wing-T,”
Woodruff said of an offense devised by
Rick Stewart, a high school coach who
has used the system to make drastic
improvements in a number of smallschool programs in California.
“We saw a ton of nine-man fronts
“Without a doubt, I think Gabe is
more athletic.
“He’s a quicker, more explosive
runner and we like his ability to sprint
out and throw from a moving pocket.
“Second, one thing we learned is
that at the quarterback position, if you
try to have two quarterbacks and you
have four or five receivers and you try
to mix them all in there, they don’t get
a good feel for each other.
“Having one quarterback is going
to give us that consistency.”
Jones will be working with a new
receiving corps after the graduation
of tight end Kevin Kline (19 receptions, 404 yards, 2 touchdowns) and
wide outs Kyle Bergstedt (33, 592, 3),
Nick Gerschutz (10, 240, 1) and Alex
Wilhelm.
Offensively, that’s priority one.
“We’re working really hard on the
passing game. That has to be, in my
opinion, the No. 1 question,” Inselmann said.
“We need to develop that passing
game to balance teams so they can’t
put mom, dad and everybody else in
there to stop the run.”

When it comes to numbers, Woodruff is a realist.
“Most teams, especially at a small
school, only play 14 to 15 kids on a
given night anyway,” he said.
The numbers, though, never
change Woodruff’s expectations.
“My goal is always to make the
playoffs,” Woodruff said. “People
always tell me, ‘Don’t you think you
should have a more realistic goal?’”

The offensive line will be anchored
by a cast of seniors, tackles Trey
Roney and Bobby Lopez, center

Schafer said speed will be one of
his offense’s biggest assets.
“We have some fast kids who are
great athletes at the skill positions,”
Schafer said. “We also have a great
group on the offensive line and our
seniors will provide a lot of leadership.
We will go as far as our seniors will
take us.”
The Bulldogs’ defensive look won’t
change as Schafer retain the defensive
coaching staff.
Grothaus (first-team all-NWC
defensive back), Rieman (secondteam all-NWC defensive back) and
Vogt (honorable mention all-NWC
linebacker) will lead the unit.
Rieman has moved to defensive
end while Roney, Lopez, Schroeder,
Gladwell and Vorst will help anchor
the line as well. Benroth and Warnecke are back at linebacker while
Giesige, Hoffman and Bogart will
headline the secondary.
“We have good speed, especially in

the secondary and at the linebacker
position,” Schafer said. “Our defensive
line is pretty quick, too. We have a
group that really gets after the ball.”
Benroth is excited about the potential of the defense.
“We love to hit people and we plan
on stepping up a lot more this year to
get stops,” Benroth said. “The leadership from the seniors is going to be a
big part of our success, too.”
Schafer believes his team has the
ability to contend for a NWC title.
Grothaus is ready to embrace
those expectations. A year ago, CG
edged NWC powerhouse Ada 34-33
in a pivotal regular-season game but
stumbled out of contention by losing
three of its next four games.

“This is his second year as a starter,
and he looks much more comfortable
running the offense,” Kloepfer said.
The running backs will be Seth
Knoll and Josh Bushong and the Falcons also will be able to spread the
field thanks to Scott’s speed at wide
receiver.
“We have some depth at running
back and there is a lack of it at wide
receiver,” Kloepfer said. “We thought
that James, with his speed, could help
us more at wide receiver. We wanted
that speed threat out there.”
Knoll is the Falcons’ leading returning rusher (149 carries, 570 yards, 4

passes (68 of 136) for 818 yards and
seven touchdowns. Parker was forced
to assume a greater role because of
injuries to Brandon Kuhlman, O-G’s
career rushing leader, and came
through in a big way, rushing for
1,370 yards and seven TDs and earning second-team all-WBL honors.
O-G must replace Craig Rieman,
a bruising 245-pound fullback who
powered his way for 456 yards and
a team-high 10 TDs. Manning the
fullback spot will be a committee of
juniors in Brad Racer (5-0, 210) and
Jacob Drerup (5-10, 190) and sophomore Kyle Niese (5-10, 185).
O-G also has the skills and experience to balance the offense with a

Jared Rickle and Dillon Welker.
“Andy and Jared are not the biggest, but they are fundamentally
sound,” Kloepfer said. “Dillon, at
255 pounds, is looking good and has
become more of a vocal leader.”
Those fundamentals will be important, especially in district play. Most
other teams in the district have defensive lines that are much larger than
Riverdale’s offensive front, Kloepfer
said.
“If there is one thing that concerns
me, it is the overall size of our offensive line,” he said. “In our conference,
a lot of other teams have been to a few
buffets. They are big.
“Our job as coaches is to combat
that with pulling to get our players
out in space and get the big boys tired.
If we have a weakness, it would be to
line up and go straight at the bigger
defensive lines in our conference.”
On defense, newcomer Austin Fry
will anchor Riverdale’s 3-4 set at nose
tackle.

positions with Adam Fox and Paul

“Every year, you worry about
whether you have the personnel for
a 3-4. You have to have a nose guard
who can take on two guys, clog the
middle of the line and get some penetration. Austin showed the first day
that he can play,” Kloepfer said. “You
also have to have four good linebackers. We have a lot of guys with good
speed who can run around and fly to
the ball.”

“We started transitioning to it last
year because it fits our personnel. We
have some really big guys up front,
then we have a lot of tweeners, guys
who don’t have the classic big linebacker-type bodies but guys who can
run and hit and who are tough kids.”
Racer will be the nose tackle and
Karhoff (45 tackles) and Samuelson
the ends with Rieman and senior
Ross Hashbarger (5-10, 215) also in
the mix.
Wells, who had five sacks, eight
other tackles for losses and 67 total
stops, spearheads the linebacking
corps, along with Russell Ellerbrock
(6-0, 175, sr.) and Tyler Zehnder (6-2,
175, jr.).
Cody Alt (6-2, 180, jr.) and Logan
Diemer (5-8, 170, sr.) will man what
Heebsh calls the half linebacker/half
cornerback “hybrid” positions.
Second-team all-WBL defensive
back Josh Buckland, who was second
in the league with four interceptions,
will be in the secondary, along with
Leopold and Siefker at times. Parker
moves to free safety.
“Tristan played linebacker last
year,” Heebsh said. “He’s a good
athlete and he’s able to make plays
in space, so we decided to make the
move.”
“We see so many spread teams. We
have to get our linebackers moving,
and we have good speed at those positions,” Schriner said.

OHSAA playoffs being Nov. 2
The 2012 OHSAA playoffs will begin the first weekend of November.
Divisions II, IV and VI will play at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, beginning on Nov.
2, while divisions I, III and V will play at 7 p.m. Saturdays, beginning on Nov. 3.
Thirty-two teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs allowing 192
schools to participate in the postseason.
• Ten area teams — Ada, Arcadia, Carey, Findlay, Hopewell-Loudon,
Leipsic, Liberty-Benton, McComb, Ottawa-Glandorf and Patrick Henry
— qualified for the playoffs last year.
• In 2011, four Blanchard Valley Conference teams earned postseason
berths. The last time that happened was in 2008.
• Coming into the 2012 season, Patrick Henry has advanced to the playoffs 10 consecutive years. Ada and Ottawa-Glandorf have been in the
playoffs six straight seasons.
• Patrick Henry (2005), Hardin Northern (2004), Columbus Grove
(2003), Fostoria (1996, 1991), McComb (1983) and Carey (1975)
have each won state championships.
• Van Buren and Vanlue are the only two local schools to never qualify
for the playoffs.

“I always used to have 10 million
receivers and running backs and no
linemen. It’s reversed this year. We
aren’t very deep in the skill positions
but we are extremely deep on the
lines,” Moyer said.
Up front, it starts with returning
all-NCC lineman Ian Baker at center.

coaches have taught him and he’s perfected it. I think he’s the best lineman

not be the biggest, the strongest or the
fastest but he is so technically sound.”
Moyer is also expecting big things
from tackles Walker Karg and Tyler
Baker and guards Alex Hampton and
Ross Powers. He sees Dylan Robertson and Cameron Crawford playing a
key role on the line too.
Defensively, Moyer thinks the
Rams’ linebacker play must be better.
Last year, Upper Sandusky allowed
26.4 points per game.
“We have the potential to be pretty
darn good. If we get off to a fast start
and the confidence builds, the sky is
the limit for these kids” Moyer said.
The biggest thing Moyer wants to
see from his squad might be a change
in attitude. The Rams got to the .500
mark for the first time last season
since 2004 when they went 8-3 and
made the playoffs.
“We’ve lost around here for a long
time,” Moyer said. “It’s time to stop
it.”
