Spanning 5,120km east to west, it is said that Indonesia
is made up of some 17,508 islands, though no one really knows.
In each edition, we take the time to enjoy a single one, whether
large or small, uninhabited, or dotted with luxury hotels.
When you’re face to face with a sea turtle in Gili Trawangan, the
first thing you notice is the eyes. Intelligent. Birdlike. Curious.
You feel like you’re looking at a wise old soul of the sea.

At least thatí s what Ií m
thinking to myself as Ií m
suspended 10m under the
Indian Ocean above a
sunny section of coral reef
on Gili Trawangan in Lombok.
Ití s not even lunchtime and
weí ve already encountered
three sea turtles.
We found the rst one contentedly
munching a breakfast of coral and
avoiding the undersea currents by
hanging out in a sheltered area of
the reef. It paused brie y to take us
in, then happily resumed its meal.
Twenty minutes later we spotted
another, effortlessly gliding in the blue
water a short distance from where our
boat was anchored. The green turtle was
extending its ippers like wings, giving
the appearance of ying under water.
And even though the turtle seemed like
it was hardly moving, when I tried to keep
pace with it I tired after ve minutes of
what felt like undersea sprinting. Ití s not
so nice to be out of breath when youí re
scuba diving.

when I feel the turtle give the camera
lens a little bump.
Now weí ve found a third sea turtle, and
this time it seems to be headed straight at
me. Ií m getting my camera ready for what
is shaping up to be the ultimate undersea
photo op ñ a photo of a turtle looking
directly at the lens. I try to regulate my
buoyancy so that Ií m oating perfectly
still about 3m above the bottom while
the turtle glides closer.
Ií ve never heard of a sea turtle attacking
anyone so Ií m not particularly worried,
but if Ií m being totally honest Ií m kind
of glad to have the camera between
the turtleí s beak and my own beak.
The turtle swims away but then circles
back a few times to check me out again
ñ each time it gives the camera lens a little
peck.Weí ve been under water for an hour
and ití s time to head back to the boat
for lunch. My head is still buzzing from
the exhilaration of so many up-close
encounters with one of the most beautiful
and gentle creatures in the sea.
I can see the turtleí s eyes peering
piercingly through the view nder on the
camera, sizing me up. I manage to snap
a few shots of the turtle looking straight
into the lens with my dive buddy hanging
out in the background ñ one of the best
photos of the trip so far.
Ií m feeling pretty excited about how
close this turtle has decided to come for
the photo when I see that the cameraí s
LCD view nder is now almost completely
lled by the turtleí s sharp beak ñ and ití s
Ií m diving with Ben Trayner from
Manta Dive, one of the longest-running

parts of the world but are relatively
abundant in the Gilis.
ì Three years ago an American girl stopped by
the shop to ask what she would see on ë Gili Tí .
She had already done 45 dives in other parts of the
world, but sheí d never seen a turtle,î Trayner recalls.
ì She asked if we could promise that sheí d see one
here and I told her I'd buy her a drink if she didn't
see a turtle. When she came up from her rst dive,
she immediately called her mother in America from
the boat to tell her about the seven turtles sheí d
just seen in the waters of Gili Trawangan.î

Reliable encounters with undersea wildlife, easy
access, great restaurants, a laid-back nightlife and
no traffic have made the Gilis (Gili Trawangan,
Gili Meno and Gili Air) among the most popular
spots in the world for scuba divers to get certi ed.
Over the course of a weekí s diving, most divers can
expect to see white-tip sharks, moray eels, manta
rays, cuttle sh, clown sh, or a school of jacks.
Whale sharks are also sighted occasionally. Macro
sealife lovers can take a short boat ride to mainland
Lombok to see rare seahorse species.
But what if youí re not a surfer and still want
to go to the beach in Indonesia?
And ití s not just the diving thatí s made the Gilis
among Indonesiaí s most attractive destinations
for foreign travellers. The trio of tiny islands boasts
some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches
youí ve seen anywhere on Earth. The fact that
motorised traffic is banned makes it easier to see
why so many stressed-out tourists ock to the
Gilis for the relaxing island vibe.
Spending an afternoon pedalling around Gili
Trawangan on a rented bicycle (by far the best way
to get around), Ií m struck by the difference in the
Balií s world-class waves put it on the map
decades ago as Indonesiaí s top destination for
foreign tourists. Today the island is rivalled only
by Hawaii as the global capital of sur ng. Judging
by the increasing proliferation of surf-brand logos
and surf racks on the popular beaches, that title
isní t going to go away anytime soon.
While ití s true that Bali has several of the most
beautiful beaches that Ií ve ever seen, the waves that
make them popular for sur ng make them daunting
for non-surfers and less-experienced swimmers.
I love the beaches at Uluwatu and Padang Padang,
but with waves regularly topping 5m (sometimes
bigger), theyí re not the best spots to visit if you have
small kids, arení t a very strong swimmer, or just
want to chill out on the beach.
As Ií m biking around the sandy streets of
Gili Trawangan, I caní t help but notice the lack
of surf-brand logos, surfboards and high-octane
nightlife thatí s so easily found around the
south of Bali.
Instead Ií m seeing more families with young kids,
backpackers on a budget and travellers just stretched
out on the beach to read a book.

When the sun goes down, youí ll see the pinpricks
of stars glowing in the night sky instead of the glow
from Kutaí s busy nightspots. While ití s true that
Gili Trawangan has a cluster of small nightclubs
for the party people, ití s also true that a short ride
on a bicycle or horse cart will easily transport you
to a quiet stretch of sand where thereí s not much
to do besides stare into the night sky and think
about the amazing wildlife you saw on your
scuba dives that day.
As Ií m packing my bag to head back to Bali after
three days of amazing diving and exploration
around the Gilis, Ií m thinking what an unusual and
special place this is. Just a couple of hours by boat
from Bali and Ií m diving with rare and endangered
sealife, sampling some incredible local delicacies
and international favourites, and navigating a
beautiful tropical island by pedal power.
I caní t wait to go back again.

As Gili Trawangan hits the mainstream
tourist trail, some travellers complain that ití s
starting to lose some of the laid-back beachbungalow vibe that made it famous in the rst
place. For those looking for a beach resort that
emphasises the beach, try Desa Dunia Beda.
Located on the north-west side of the island,
the resort is situated front and centre on the
most deserted beach I saw on Gili Trawangan.
Youí ll stay in a traditional Javanese Joglo villa,
hand-carved from the nest teak wood and
appointed with an eclectic collection of
handicrafts. The resort (whose name translates
roughly as ë A Different World Villageí ) is
especially popular with young families seeking
peace and privacy from the busier backpacker
and diver-oriented accommodation offered
on the other side of the island. The friendly
kitchen staff also prepare what must be the
fastest breakfast on Gili T. I never waited more
than ve minutes for my food!

Pertama kali melihat seekor penyu laut
Gili Trawangan, Anda akan terkesan
dengan matanya yang cerdas, tajam
dan penuh dengan rasa ingin tahu.
Anda seperti sedang berhadapan
dengan makhluk laut yang bijak.
Itulah kesan yang tertinggal di benak saya tentang penyu ketika saya
berada sepuluh meter di bawah permukaan Laut Hindia di atas terumbu
karang di Gili Trawangan, Lombok. Belum juga waktu menunjukkan
saat makan siang, kami sudah bertemu dengan tiga ekor penyu.
Penyu yang pertama kami temui tampak sedang mengunyah koral
sarapan paginya, binatang itu menghindar dari tekanan arus laut
dengan bersembunyi di bagian yang agak terlindung di dalam
terumbu. Sejenak penyu itu terpana saat kami masuk, lalu
kembali meneruskan makannya.
Dua puluh menit kemudian kami melihat penyu yang lain, dengan
santainya berenang di dalam birunya air laut, tak jauh dari tempat
perahu motor kami ditambatkan. Penyu hijau itu pun mengembangkan
kaki-kakinya, seperti hendak terbang di dalam air. Walaupun penyu
tersebut tampak sulit untuk bergerak, ternyata ketika saya mencoba
untuk mengimbangi kecepatannya berenang, baru lima menit saya
sudah merasa kelelahan, seperti habis berlari cepat di dalam air.
Sungguh pengalaman yang tak menyenangkan kehabisan nafas
di saat sedang menyelam.

looking for the best place to eat.
Fresh seafood is at the top of most
menus and it's hard to go wrong with
a tasty lobster, like the ones pictured here.
Akhirnya kami pun bertemu dengan penyu yang ketiga, dan kali ini
penyu itu tampak berenang lurus ke arah saya. Saya pun menyiapkan
kamera untuk menangkap momen yang bisa menjadikan gambar bawah
laut saya begitu spektakuler ñ foto seekor penyu yang sedang menatap
lurus ke arah kamera. Saya berusaha untuk dapat diam mengambang
sekitar tiga meter dari dasar laut ketika penyu itu berjalan pelan
untuk mendekat.
Saya bisa melihat mata penyu yang menatap tajam lewat lensa kamera,
terasa menusuk. Saya pun mencoba mengambil beberapa gambar saat
si penyu menatap tepat ke arah lensa dengan teman saya sebagai latar
belakang, itulah foto terbaik yang saya dapatkan selama perjalanan ini.

Larangan menggunakan kendaraan bermotor membuat
banyak wisatawan berbondong≠ bondong datang ke
Gili untuk menikmati suasananya yang tenang dan santai.
Betapa senangnya saya dengan kedekatan
jarak antara penyu dan kamera saat
pengambilan gambar. Lewat layar LCD pada
kamera, saya bisa melihat moncongnya yang
sudah hampir memenuhi layar, tetapi penyu
itu masih terus saja bergerak mendekat. Saya
pun mengklik tombol penjepret foto untuk
mengambil gambar penyu itu secara close-up
tepat saat saya merasakan moncongnya
menabrak kamera.
Saya belum pernah mendengar ada penyu
laut yang menyerang orang sehingga tak
ada rasa khawatir, tetapi jika mau jujur, saya
senang sekali bisa mendapatkan kesempatan
sedekat ini dengan moncong penyu yang
saya potret. Penyu itu pun berenang menjauh
tetapi kemudian berbalik lagi beberapa
kali untuk mendekat dan selalu sambil
menyentuhkan moncongnya ke kamera.
Kami telah berada di bawah air selama
satu jam hingga tiba saatnya untuk kembali
ke atas perahu motor untuk makan siang.
Ingatan saya masih dipenuhi dengan
kejadian tadi, pertemuan yang begitu
dekat dengan makhluk tercantik dan
terlembut di bawah laut.
Saya menyelam bersama Ben Trayner dari
Manta Dive Shop, salah satu toko menyelam
yang paling lama di Gili Trawangan. Sambil
menyantap nasi bungkus yang pedas,
Trayner menjelaskan alasan mengapa
begitu banyak penyelam yang gemar
mengunjungi Gili.
ì Tiga tahun yang lalu seorang gadis asal
Amerika mampir ke toko untuk menanyakan
apa yang menarik dari penyu-penyu di Gili
Trawangan ini. Dia sudah empat puluh lima
kali menyelam di berbagai negara, tetapi
belum pernah bertemu dengan seekor penyu
pun,î cerita Trayner. ì Gadis itu lalu bertanya
apakah kami berani menjamin bila dia akan
bertemu penyu di tempat ini, dan saya
menjawab akan mentraktirnya minum
bila ternyata nanti dia tidak melihat penyu.
Tetapi begitu dia selesai menyelam, dia
langsung menelepon ibunya yang tinggal
di Amerika dari atas perahu motor untuk
menceritakan tentang tujuh penyu yang baru
saja dilihatnya di perairan Gili Trawangan.î

yang tak terlalu hingar bingar, serta
jalan yang bebas kemacetan adalah
faktor-faktor yang membuat kepulauan
Gili (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno dan
Gili Air) menjadi salah satu tempat paling
populer di dunia bagi para penyelam bisa
mendapatkan serti kasi. Setelah satu
minggu belajar menyelam, para penyelam
bisa melihat hiu moncong putih, belut
moray, ikan pari, cumi-cumi, ikan badut,
atau pun gerombolan ikan jack. Ikan hiu
paus juga kadang terlihat. Pencinta
kehidupan laut bisa menaiki perahu
motor ke daratan utama Lombok
untuk melihat kuda laut yang langka.
Dan menyelam bukanlah satu-satunya
yang membuat Gili sebagai salah satu
destinasi wisata yang menarik bagi
para wisatawan asing. Ketiga pulau ini

putih yang belum pernah Anda temui
di mana pun. Selain itu, larangan

Sejak sepuluh tahun lalu, ombak Bali yang
tinggi sudah menjadikan pulau ini tercatat
sebagai destinasi wisata utama bagi para
turis asing. Kini ombak tinggi pulau ini
hanya bisa disaingi oleh Pulau Hawai.
Dilihat dari banyaknya logo selancar dan
rak-rak selancar yang terus meningkat
di pantai-pantai terkenal, pulau ini
diperkirakan masih akan terus digemari.
Tapi bagaimana bila Anda bukan seorang
peselancar tetapi tetap ingin mengunjungi
pantai di Indonesia?
Walaupun Bali memang memiliki
pantai-pantai yang indah yang belum
pernah saya lihat sebelumnya, ombak
tinggi yang membuatnya terkenal
di antara para peselancar itu pastinya
bisa membuat jerih para non peselancar
dan perenang pemula.
Saya menyukai pantai-pantai di Uluwatu
dan Padang Padang, tetapi dengan ombak
yang setinggi lima meter (malah terkadang
lebih tinggi dari itu), pantai-pantai
tersebut bukanlah tempat yang terbaik
untuk dikunjungi khususnya jika Anda
membawa anak kecil, perenang pemula,
atau hanya ingin bersantai di pantai.
Saat sedang bersepeda di sekitar
jalanan berpasir di Gili Trawangan,
saya memperhatikan tak terlalu banyak
logo dari merek selancar, papan selancar,
atau pun kehidupan malam yang hingar
bingar yang biasanya sangat mudah
didapati di selatan Bali.
Di sini saya malah lebih sering mendapati
keluarga yang membawa anak-anak,
para backpacker dengan dana terbatas,
dan para pelancong yang sedang bersantai
di pantai sambil membaca buku.
Di malam hari, Anda tak lagi melihat
cahaya warna-warni yang muncul dari
hingar bingarnya kehidupan malam
Kuta melainkan bintang-bintang yang
bersinar indah di atas langit. Walaupun
Gili Trawangan memiliki sejumlah kecil
klub malam bagi mereka yang gemar
berhura-hura, buat Anda yang ingin
melihat indahnya langit di malam
hari dan merenungi keindahan alam
bawah laut yang baru saja Anda saksikan
di siang hari tadi, Anda bisa mengayuh
sepeda atau pun menaiki delman yang
tanpa memakan waktu lama sudah

Ketika saya sedang mengepak barangbarang saya untuk kembali ke Bali setelah
tiga hari melakukan kegiatan penyelaman
yang menakjubkan dan menjelajah Gili,
tiba-tiba terlintas di dalam benak betapa
unik dan spesialnya tempat ini. Hanya
menempuh waktu sekitar dua jam dari
Bali dengan menggunakan perahu motor,
saya sudah bisa menyelam dan bertemu
dengan makhluk laut yang langka,
merasakan lezatnya masakan lokal
maupun internasional, serta bersepeda
di pulau tropis yang paling indah.
