MINNESOTA MULTI‐PURPOSE STADIUM DESIGN PRESENTATION NOVEMBER 21, 2013 1 How We Managed Through the Maze of Community Involvement to Complete a Site Design for the New Stadium. 2 3 Introduction of Presentation Participants Dick Koppy EVS Dan Bowar EVS Dan Elenbaas Ryan Companies Adam Kramer PCE 4 DAN BOWAR CHIEF CIVIL ENGINEER ON THE STADIUM PROJECT • BCE graduate from U of M • Worked with Ryan Companies as an associate of Dick Koppy; • Works for EVS Engineering and is Chief Civil Engineer in charge of the MMPS design process; 5 DAN ELENBAAS • BCE graduate from Michigan Tech; • Worked for SEH Engineering prior to joining Ryan Companies and worked with Dick Koppy and Dan Bowar; • He works for Ryan Co and is in charge of all of the Site Engineering aspects of the Downtown East Development project that Ryan is working on side by side with the Stadium project; 6 RICHARD KOPPY Richard has been involved in Public Works improvement projects for over 125 years. • U of M, BCE graduate; • City Engineer of St. Louis Park; • Past President in mid‐80's of MPWA; • Founder of RLK Associates in 1989; • Worked for Ryan Companies in charge of Site Plan development in early 2000; • Now works with EVS Engineering ‐‐ Project Manager of Stadium project; 7 THE TEAM 8 9 10 11 12 Farewell to the HHH MetroDome Facts concerning the Metrodome: • • • • New stadium has a Tough Act to Follow! $55 million for the Dome, infrastructure and other improvements resulted in $120 million Seating arrangements are similar to the new stadium – Football at 64k; Baseball at ~ 55k in the World Series era; new stadium at 65k Stadium usage average over 200 events per year; 13 Farewell to the HHH MetroDome Highlights • Vikings – • Twins – – • • • • • • Superbowl in 1992 World Series in 1987/1991 MLB All Star game in 1985 Timberwolves initial Season before Target Center Golden Gophers Baseball Golden Gophers Football before TCF Stadium NCAA Final Four in 1992, 2001 Thousands of other major concerts and events such as High School Tournaments… Naming Rights ‐‐‐ Hubert H Humphrey vs. ??? Why is it happening with the new stadium? • The Star Tribune has moved it’s printing operations to a modern facility presenting the opportunity for selling 5 blocks • Transit improvements like LRT allow higher densities • Consolidation of surface parking lots to structured parking 47 48 49 Mixed Use Office, Residential, and Retail • • • • • • • • 1.2 Million SF of office space Two 17 story office buildings Office capacity for 5,000‐6,000 employees 28,000 SF of retail space, street level and skyway 410 residential units over 2 phases 1,625 stall parking structure 4.2 acre green space Skyway connection extending downtown core 50 51 Multi‐Purpose Plaza and Park to accompany the stadium • East/West plaza that connects the front door of the stadium to downtown core • Gathering area for events, before and after Vikings games • Opportunity for world class urban park 52 53 54 55 56 57 58 Infrastructure for the Downtown East Development • Parking Ramp • • • • – NFL exiting requirements – 2,500 stalls within 1 block set by the legislation Skyways – Clear width for pedestrian capacity Pedestrian corridor along 5th Street paralleling LRT Regional stormwater facility for entire development Reuse of tunnel under 4th Street as a stormwater cistern – Store 10 year event from roofs of 4 city blocks – Over 700,000 Gallon capacity – Diverts up to 3 million gallons from city storm sewer per average year – Save up to $40,000 per year by not using potable water for 59 irrigation 60 61 62 Thank you. 63
