T
he American Heart Association’s Heart Awards Gala is a major fundraising event in our fight against cardiovascular
disease, still the number one killer of American men and women. Tonight, we are grateful for your generous
contributions, which will support the tripartite mission of the American Heart Association, i.e public education
through community programs, support of life saving heart research and legislative advocacy. This evening, we honor, Dr. Asher
Kimchi, a Los Angeles cardiologist, for his contributions to cardiovascular health. Dr. Kimchi is an attending cardiologist at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Dr. Kimchi is a practicing cardiologist who continues to save lives through his dedication and devotion to his profession.
In addition, he has been one of the leading professionals devoted to educating other professionals through symposia that
are held in different parts of the United States and Canada under the aegis of the International Academy of Cardiology, an
organization founded by Dr Kimchi. He is passionate about his patients, passionate about education and deeply believes in
the mission of the AHA. He has been a volunteer for the AHA and has also been the President of its Los Angeles Chapter.
Above all, he is a dear friend, a cherished colleague and a wonderful family man devoted to his beautiful wife Becky and his
his two sons Eyal and Eitan. We are privileged to have the opportunity to honor him.
To both our Honorary Committee and our Event Committee, thank you for your guidance and dedication. Your tremendous
support has been invaluable.
We wish you and your loved ones happiness and good health. Enjoy the evening.
Very truly yours,

W
elcome to the Heart Awards Gala!! Thank you for sharing this very special evening with the
American Heart Association of Los Angeles County.
Tonight we honor the commitment, achievement and vision of our very own Los Angeles County Board
President, Dr. Asher Kimchi of Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Kimchi’s service to the American
Heart Association and to our mission serves as an inspiration to staff and volunteers alike. His dedication
to his patients reminds all of us why we do what we do. I speak on behalf of the staff of the American
Heart Association when I congratulate Dr. Kimchi on an amazing career and life lived in the service
of others.
This evening we will ask you to consider one of our latest and most urgent endeavors – the fight against
childhood obesity. Today 16% of American youth are overweight or obese. Children lead more sedentary
lives, thanks to modern conveniences and cutting edge entertainment. Our kids also face the possibility
of being the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents. Our strategic partnership with the
Clinton Foundation – the Alliance for a Healthier Generation – seeks to combat the societal forces at
work against healthier life styles for our kids – better nutritional choices, increased physical activity and
enhanced awareness of the effects of childhood obesity on adult health. I hope you will join us in this
fight by “raising your paddle” later this evening.
I’d like to recognize our incredible group of honorary co-chairs for making tonight possible – Haim and
Dr. Cheryl Saban, Cindy and Alan Horn and Jerry and Margie Perenchio. You have the gratitude of our
entire division and we are proud to count you as friends and supporters of our mission.
Finally, my personal thanks to our dinner chairs - Dr. John G. Harold and Dr. P.K. Shah - for their support and hard work to make this event a reality. You are truly “gems”.
Have a wonderful evening!
Claudia Keller

was promoted to be the commander of the Israeli Aero Medical Evacuation Unit, achieving the military
rank of Major.

appeared in many prestigious peer review journals. He also serves on the editorial boards of leading
cardiology journals.
Dr. Kimchi is the Founder and Chairman of the International Academy of Cardiology and over the past

Hart’s, “Winged Victory”. First he did the Broadway show,
and then the motion picture for Darryl Zanuck with George
Cukor directing. When “Winged Victory” disbanded, Red
joined Mickey Rooney’s outfit in France, and together with
Mickey, entertained the troops all through the European
Theater of Operations during World War II. Red had the
honor to perform at the Potsdam Conference and was among
the first troops to enter Berlin. After the service, Red did two
more Broadway shows - George Abbott’s “Barefoot Boy with
Cheek” with Nancy Walker, and Michael Kidd’s “Hold It”.
From 1948 to 1952, Buttons played the Broadway movie
houses with the big bands - the Paramount, the Loew’s State,
etc.; the cafe circuit - The Copa, Latin Quarter, etc.; television
guest shots - The Berle Texaco Hour, Cavalcade of Stars, and
more. In 1952, came “The Red Buttons Show” (on CBS).
A smash! Buttons won the Academy of Radio and Television
Arts and Sciences Award (which later became the Emmy) as
“Best Comedian of 1953”. The series lasted three years.
A
s one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces,
Larry Miller has appeared in over 50 films and
numerous television shows. Miller was most
recently seen in the critically-acclaimed documentary
“THE ARISTOCRATS” and “KISS KISS BANG BANG,”
starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. He will next be
seen in the upcoming films “KEEPING UP WITH THE
STEINS,” starring opposite Jeremy Piven and “FOR YOUR
CONSIDERATION,” which was written and directed by
Christopher Guest.
His numerous television appearances include the hit shows
“DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES,” “BOSTON LEGAL,”
“8 SIMPLE RULES,” “LAW & ORDER” and
“SEINFELD.” In addition, Miller has appeared regularly on
“REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER,” “THE
TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO” and “LATE
SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN.” He has also
starred in several of his own HBO comedy specials and on
Broadway in Neil Simon’s play “THE DINNER PARTY.”
Miller is also contributing humorist to “The Daily Standard”
and recently finished writing his first book for Judith Regan
which is due out in October.
Miller began his career with a memorable cameo as the
brown-nosing store manager in “PRETTY WOMAN.”
Since then, he has delighted audiences in some of the most
unforgettable roles in such films as “BEST IN SHOW,”
“WAITING FOR GUFFMAN,” “10 THINGS I HATE
ABOUT YOU,” “THE PRINCESS DIARIES and
“THE NUTTY PROFESSOR,” to name just a few.
R
ed Buttons was born lucky - he was born poor - show
me a comedian who was born rich?
At age twelve, Red worked every amateur contest he could
enter. The Depression was on thick and heavy, and a five
dollar first prize was a bonanza. At age sixteen, while he was
still attending Evander Childs High School in the Bronx,
Red auditioned for and got the job as an entertaining bell
hop at a tavern called Ryan’s in City Island, New York.
The red hair and the bell hop’s uniform with all those
buttons inspired Dinty Moore, the world renowned orchestra
leader, to dub our hero Red Buttons - a perfect name for
the times - there being very few performers with names like
Aaron Chwatt. That summer, Red worked his first job in the
Catskills (that great training ground that gave us, among
others, Danny Kaye, Robert Merrill, Moss Hart, Jerry Lewis,
etc.,) at the Beerkill Lodge for one dollar fifty per week plus
room and board. His straight man was Robert Alda whose
wife was pregnant with Alan.
In 1939, Red went to work for Minsky, the youngest burlesque
comedian in the business. He billed himself as the “Only
Burlesque Comedian With All His Own Teeth”. Also, in
1942, Red appeared in “Wine, Woman and Song” for Minsky.
This was the last burlesque show in New York City since
the La Guardia administration determined to close it. Red
was on stage when the place was raided. In 1943, Buttons,
now in the Army Air Corp., was chosen for a role in Moss
1957 brought the film “Sayonara” with Marlon Brando, and
Josh Logan directing. In 1958 Red won the Best Supporting
Actor for “Sayonara” and the Golden Globe Award for Best
Supporting Actor. Red entered into a movie career and 34
motion pictures followed such as “Imitation General” with
Glen Ford; “The Big Circus”; “Hatari!” with Howard Hawks
and John Wayne; Darryl Zanuck’s “The Longest Day”;
a cameo in Billy; “The Poseidon Adventure”; “Gable and
Lombard”; “Movie, Movie” with George C. Scott; “Viva
Knievel”; to name a few.
In 1966, Red did the ABC television series, “The Double
Life of Henry Phyfe”. Buttons has guested on every major
television show - Ed Sullivan, Andy Williams, Dinah Shore,
Perry Como, Redd Fox, Eddie Fisher, Johnny Carson, Merv
Griffin, Mike Douglas, Bill Cosby Show, and Dean Martin
Roasts (where he did his famous “Never Got a Dinner”
routine). Dramatic shows include “Playhouse 90”; “U.S.
Steel”; “Studio One”; “General Electric”; “Knotts Landing”;
and more recently, the Emmy Award winning series “E.R.”
Red received an emmy nomination for “Best Guest Star
Appearance” in a drama for E.R.
Red has come full circle for a ghetto kid who started
entertaining on street corners and now has a star on
Hollywood and Vine. Red has done it all – a command
performance for Queen Elizabeth and the London Palladium.
His career spans over 70 years.
Red Buttons has been honored by The City of Hope “Spirit
of Life” Award; the Eddie Cantor Foundation’s “Suzie”
Award; the Friar’s Club “Lifetime Achievement” Award;
and the Junior Achievement Award for his charitable
contributions to all causes.

“Faces of the Brave” (FOTB) is a “Non-Profit” 9-11 Tribute
Artwork Project that has been created to Honor the lives of the
fallen New York Emergency Services Personnel lost on 9-11 by
putting their faces before the public. After more than 4 years of
research and communication with the surviving families of the fallen
heroes lost on 9-11, Las Vegas artist Randy Soard has obtained the
legal permission of approximately 500 estate administrators of the
fallen heroes for the inclusion of their family member’s image in
the “Faces of the Brave” artwork project. “Faces of the Brave” is the
only known artwork of its type to be legally authorized by the
surviving families of the 9-11 Heroes. This “Artist Proof ” is a “limited
