EDITOR'S THOUGHTS > >
JAMES PLANK
John Wesley described the purpose of the Methodist Church as “Spreading Scriptural Holiness throughout the land.” Truly, that motto has fallen upon the InterChurch Holiness Convention as more services for
the promotion of holiness and revival have been held in 2015 than any other year in the history of IHC.
From Massachusetts to Washington State, from Alabama to Alaska, and from Guam to Ukraine, God has blessed IHC with open
doors and open platforms to preach and sing and minister. People
are hungry. The time is urgent. IHC stands ready to walk through
the open doors and unite people from all backgrounds under the
banner “Holiness unto the Lord.” Pray with us for the finances and
the spiritual personnel to make all of this happen. Enclosed in this
edition of the Convention Herald, you will find a brief report of our
travels and activities for 2015. We especially thank our team of IHC
moderators who have made it possible to conduct a record number
of holiness services across the country. Without this group volunteer effort, it would not have been possible. ◉

IHC comes to GUAM
T
he work of IHC is enjoying many “firsts” as doors are opening world-wide for the conducting of Holiness Conventions.
There is a great hunger and thirst for the message of holiness
everywhere.
The invitation to conduct the first Guam InterChurch Holiness
Convention was met with a great deal of excitement. Just five
years prior, the very first IHC was held in the Pacific region in
Honolulu, Hawaii.
It was hoped that an IHC would also be held in Saipan, but
tragically, a powerful typhoon hit the island destroying homes and
damaging several church buildings. As the convention in Guam
was held, our thoughts and prayers were with the pastors and people in Saipan.
The opening service of the Guam IHC exceeded expectations as
the church filled with people representing 4 different congregations in Guam and a church in Hawaii.
The presence of the Lord was sensed in a powerful way and the
altar was lined with seekers in nearly every service. God’s presence
was near and there were many tears and praises.
Host Pastor Don Sabang had prepared for the convention by
prayer, advertising, and organization. From parking attendants
to greeters and ushers, the services were well cared for. Delicious
meals were served allowing for great fellowship among all those
in attendance. Pastor and Mrs. Sabang are to be commended for
their great work and for inviting IHC to come to their church. The
sacrifice of the people in giving and working is not received lightly,
but with deep appreciation.
The youth of the churches were a great asset caring for many
aspects of the convention.
Assistant General Secretary James Plank preached in the main
evangelistic services. Frank Heidler taught in four Bible studies.
Frank and Jody Heidler provided special music for the convention.
Marie Plank shared the vision of Women of Worth in a special
Bible study for ladies on Sunday afternoon.
Attending the convention was Gloria Pangilinan, a missions
leader in the Pacific region. She has been a tremendous blessing
to both the convention held earlier in Hawaii and now in this new
convention in Guam.
IHC wishes to thank the holiness churches of the Pacific region
for their vision in conducting this holiness convention. May God
bless our holiness people world-wide as they truly beam forth the
Gospel message. ◉

REFLECTIONS from
GENERAL SECRETARY > >
LEONARD SANKEY
Lead Me In A Plain Path
Jeremiah’s writings are often characterized by his weeping spirit. He weeps over the sins of his people; he weeps because he knows God’s judgments are coming; he weeps because the holy city is soon
to be destroyed; enemy armies will enter Jerusalem to deface the temple and to lay the city in ruins.
He weeps — one of his books is called “Lamentations.” Can you
imagine an author advertising his book with such a name? And can
you imagine that writer putting a notice in the paper urging people
to buy his book and telling them they will read woes, and tears, and
judgements, and heart-rending sighs?
And yet, Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, is known for that. It is
Jeremiah who writes two times in chapters 6 and 8 of his prophecy, “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people
slightly, saying, ‘Peace, Peace,’ when there is no peace.” (6:14, 8:11)
He sees the unspeakable tragedy of unfaithful ministers who won’t
tell the people their sins. But he also directs them in the right way
when he writes, “Thus saith the Lord, ‘Stand ye in the ways, and see,
and ask for the old paths where is the good way, and walk therein,
and ye shall find rest for your souls.’”
The “old paths” were good for the soul hundreds of years ago;
they are still good for the soul today. Much of the stress in the
church world today is caused because compromising preachers and
worldly congregations have combined their efforts to lead us in
4 CONVENTION HERALD
“new paths.” The new paths are not blessed of the Lord, and they
will not give rest to the soul. Jesus said, “Come unto Me… and I will
give you rest; take my yoke upon you and learn of Me… and ye shall
find rest unto your souls.”
Jeremiah’s crowd was much like the crowds of the 21st century. When they heard the old prophet calling them back to the “old
paths” of obedience to God, they said, “We will not walk therein.”
They knew the right way and they heard the call. They deliberately
decided they would not take God’s way. The result then, and the result today, is always the same — they could not be at rest and they
were candidates for God’s wrath and judgment.
Brothers and sisters, God is calling us back, back to to the old
paths, back to the biblical way. Most of us know what is right, but
too many are saying by attitudes and by the choices we make, “We
will not walk in God’s plain path.”
Let us not set ourselves up for Divine judgement; rather let us
take the hand of God and tell him, “Lead us in a plain path, and we
will walk with Thee.” ◉
Ukraine 2015 Report
STEPHEN GIBSON
P
aul Stetler and Eric Himelick were in Ukraine for an IHC and
tour of churches this summer. They preached the holiness
message and introduced printed material to the churches. The visit
was arranged by the Ukrainian Holiness Association.
There is a growing holiness movement in Ukraine as more pastors gain an appreciation for a doctrine that emphasizes devotion
to God and victorious living. The association is providing ministry
training courses that can be used in local churches.
Below are some paragraphs from Eric Himelick’s report of the trip.
“We had a fine meal at the pastor’s house in a nearby village and
left about 4 pm for our next stop in the village of Dumantsi about
25 miles away. The church was started in 1944, and the first meeting place was on the site of the house where the first believer in
the village lived. Most of the town was leveled by German bombs
during the war, but her house was still standing. The people would
run to her house for safety because they believed that God was
protecting her from being destroyed. Later, they built a church
where her house had stood.
“We arrived in the village of Vasalifka about 1:30 am after traveling on washboard roads for nearly five long hours. We stayed
with our driver, Bro. Nikoli, his wife, and their eleven children.
They opened their home to us and gave us the very best that they
had. My first impression on arriving was that there were children everywhere. Their children ranged in age from 19 to just 8
months. While they lived simply, their family was so happy and
joyful. The children were all pleasant, hardworking, and respectful.
It was such a blessing to spend time with them.
“The service at 10 AM was about 45 minutes away in the village
of Pavoloch with Pastor Yuriyi, his wife, Nadya, and their three
children. They are the only evangelical church and Gospel witness
in this town or area. Paul and I both spoke for 20 minutes each
about holiness of heart. After the service, they showed us around
the town and took us to the local museum. The museum was located in a former Jewish synagogue. The stories of Nazi atrocities
here during WWII were particularly poignant. Most of the men
were killed or sent to labor camps, and almost all of the Jews were
wiped out, buried in mass graves nearby. Famine, destruction,
death, and oppression filled the stories. It was enlightening but
very depressing.
“All in all, it was a great trip, and I am thankful for the opportunity that I had to serve God in Ukraine. I have a deep respect for
my brothers and sisters there, and I have a deeper appreciation for
the work that God is doing in that place.” ◉

A National Treasure
PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S BIBLE
G
ranted her independence from Australia in 1975, the
fledgling nation of Papua New Guinea was predicted to
fail. With over 1000 tribes and over 800 native languages, the nation was hopelessly divided. The mountain ranges of the
country made roads and trails impossible to connect.
However, no one took into consideration the Gospel. This
“power of God unto salvation” has now reached every tribe, and it
is the Gospel that has united a divided country. Early missionaries
paid with their lives. The cannibals of the heathen Papua regions
6 CONVENTION HERALD
were not accepting of the message, but the missionaries continued
to come.
At the close of World War II, the doors opened wide and hundreds of missionaries walked through the doors in an effort to reach
a stone-age people with the Gospel. For many Papua New Guineans,
they were seeing the first white face and hearing the first words of
the “Good News.” Mission stations were built. Preaching points
were established. Clinics and schools began to operate. One little
light at a time, and soon the nation was ablaze with the Gospel.
The winds of change are blowing across Papua New Guinea as
she celebrates her 40th year of independence. There are large
hotels, exquisite restaurants, and a new airport. Gas, gold, coffee,
and natural resources abound. New roads are being built. New
businesses are thriving and the nation is catching the attention of
the world.
But with this progress and leap into modernity, a Speaker of
the Parliament has risen to power who recognizes that PNG’s
achievements have been a direct result of the Gospel and the work
of faithful missionaries. He has repeatedly pledged his support
to missionaries and his appreciation for the great work that they
have accomplished. The Honorable Speaker Theo Zurenuoc has
also recognized that it is time to remove any pagan influence in
the land. Superstitious cultic carvings in the Parliament were
removed and a heathen totem pole dismantled. Though the Speak-
er recognizes and appreciates PNG culture, he disdains what heathenism and witchcraft have done to his people. Likening PNG to
the People of Israel, he says “We have been in the wilderness these
forty years, it is time to cross over to the Promise Land!”
Dr. Gene Hood had been a strong supporter of Rev. G.T. Bustin,
an early holiness missionary in PNG. He had been involved in
extensive radio work and had provided logistic and monetary support to the ongoing work in PNG for many years. In recent trips
to the country, Dr. Hood had been an inspiration to the people in
urging them to continue to take the way of holiness.
In one of Dr. Hood’s recent trips to the country, he met with the
Speaker of the Parliament and other Parliament members concerning the progress of the gospel in the nation. The Speaker discussed
the removal of heathen and offensive carvings from the capitol building. It was during this meeting that Dr. Hood felt led to offer an orig-

have served PNG, none have been more faithful than the many
who have come from the holiness churches of the United States,
including Rev. G.T. Bustin, the pioneer missionary and founder of
Papua New Guinea Bible Church.
A large delegation of more than fifty dignitaries from PNG arrived
in the United States to receive the Bible. Sadly, as their delegation
was arriving, Dr. Hood was stricken with a massive heart attack and
passed away shortly thereafter. The excitement of this event was
overshadowed by the profound grief of the Hood Family and the
people of Papua New Guinea who had learned to love this man.
In a powerful and moving service at the Dayton Convention
Center in Dayton, Ohio, the valuable 1611 King James Bible was
inal leather-bound, 1611 King James Version Bible to the government and people of Papua New Guinea as a symbol of the nation’s
turning to Christianity and the replacing of the heathen symbols in
the Parliament. The Bible was indeed a valuable gift for it was the
prize of Dr. Hood’s Bible collection. Very few original copies remain,
and even more rare, one in its original binding and in good condition. Many years ago, Dr. Hood and his family had begun collecting
rare Bibles. He had always felt that it was for a special purpose, not
only to safeguard early copies of the printed Word, but for a purpose
that was bigger than they could realize. When Dr. Hood heard the
plans of the Speaker and other members of Parliament, he immediately knew that this was, indeed, the reason for his collection.
It was arranged that The Speaker, along with Christian members
of parliament, would travel to the United States and receive the
Bible in a special ceremony at the InterChurch Holiness Convention in Dayton, Ohio. Among the groups of missionaries who

presented on behalf of the Hood Family by Rev. Ben Crawford, an
associate of Dr. Hood’s ministry. In this special service, the Honorable Speaker Zurenuoc graciously accepted the gift on behalf of his
country and issued a public and formal apology to all missionaries
of the United States for the persecution that was afflicted on the
early pioneers. The apology was formally accepted by James Plank,
Assistant General Secretary of the Interchurch Holiness Convention. Tears were accompanied by shouts of praise as missionaries
were recognized for their great work. The PNG delegation was
overwhelmed with joy to see their national leaders accepting this
Book as a foundation of their country’s government in this 40th
year of Independence. PNG Bible Church National Chairman Rev.
Wane Ninjipa joined leaders in his country on the platform at
Dayton to add significance to this event.
The plane carrying the Bible was met at the Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby, the capitol city, by Prime Minister Peter

O’Neil. With the pomp and circumstance of a king, the Bible was
carried through the streets of the capitol city to cheering thousands.
By vote of parliament, it was decided that on Independence day,
the Bible would find its permanent home within the Parliament
Chamber, with the Prime Minister calling the 1611 King James
Bible “our national treasure.”
Nearly 100,000 people filled Parliament Square as the Bible was
carried much like the Ark of the Covenant up the Parliament steps
where it was received by the Prime Minister who declared “Papua
New Guinea will be a nation that worships only one God.”
It was an honor for James Plank to represent IHC at the events
in Port Moresby as a guest of the Speaker of Parliament. Ben

Former missionaries, Robert and Barbara Brock were also present
for the ceremony.
In a private meeting in the Parliament office of the Speaker, Carolyn Hood spoke saying “I will be praying for you every day, Mr.
Speaker, that you will be a God-owned man.”
Those in attendance will never forget the powerful sight of
seeing a once heathen nation publicly declare, “The Lord, He is
God!” The entire events are a tremendous tribute to the sacrificial lives of so many foreign missionaries. William Carey on
preparing for his missions in India, spoke to his fellow worker, “I
will go into the pit, you stay here and hold the ropes.” So many
answered the call to Papua New Guinea. So many more “held
the ropes.” You are seeing the fruit of your labor now, and much
more is to come! ◉

April 21 The Annual Business Meeting
was held in the Dayton Convention Center conducted by board chairman Michael
Avery. Leonard Sankey and James Plank

to the committees his desire to step down
from IHC leadership in April 2016. In
2014 a search committee had been elected
to bring a name to the combined committees to assume leadership of IHC following the conclusion of Leonard Sankey’s
term of service. James Plank was nominated by the committee and elected to
this office.

the church building added to the atmosphere of the Convention.
There were a number of seekers at the

nine churches.
I was impressed by the Ukrainian Christians’ love for the Scripture. I noticed that
in the nine churches we visited, each of
them had Scriptures posted on their walls
and nearly every person who had a part in
leading the services seemed to reference
Scripture continually. Considering the fact
that less than 30 years ago, many of these
people could not have owned a Bible, this
is not surprising.
This love for Scripture provided a foundation for us to share the message of Holiness. I was thrilled with the deep, insightful questions the church people asked
us about sanctification and holy living.
Though we spoke to Christians from many
different theological backgrounds, they
were eager to learn more about scriptural
teachings on this topic.
While our primary focus was preaching
and teaching, there were also meaningful
moments of prayer and one-on-one discussion. We stayed in homes and traveled to
country villages and large cities.
It is a vital work God is doing in Ukraine.
Dr. Steve Gibson and those assisting him

LEONARD SANKEY
Some Give All
Rachel Cutler, missionary to Lesotho, was tragically
killed in South Africa on November 17, 2015.
H
enry Martyn, distinguished in his academic achievements
at Cambridge University, became an important figure in the
history of the English Church. About the time he sensed God’s
call to missions, he also fell in love with Lydia. He proposed marriage to her, if she would accompany him to India in fulfillment of
the call of God. Lydia responded to his proposal by saying that if
Henry would stay in England, she would marry him. It became a
mental battle for Martyn — India or Lydia? Lydia or India?
The call of God was stronger and Henry Martyn chose to follow
God’s claim on his life. He said, “Here I am, Lord; send me to the
ends of the earth; send me to the rough savage pagans of the wilderness; send me from all that is called comfort on earth; send me
even to death itself if it be but in Thy service and in Thy kingdom.”
Martyn’s rugged acceptance of God’s way above academia,
human love, family, and other career options, portrays the kind
of love and devotion that has marked the long history of Christianity. Not often enough, true, but still the kingdom of Christ
has been built on the throbbing hearts, the willing obedience, the
sacrificial spirit, and the determined passion of multitudes of men
and women who have counted life not dear unto themselves, but
have hazarded their lives for Christ’s sake. Names like Brainerd,
C.T. Studd, Goforth, and Booth, come to mind. More recently, and
some from our own holiness heritage, would include the Charles
Cowmans and the Lewis Glenns. In our own days, I am thinking
of Nancy Davis who gave the last full measure of devotion on a
Mexican highway.
Rachel Cutler was raised in a conservative holiness home and
attended a conservative holiness Bible college. She was thrilled
for the opportunity of impacting the lives of children in our local
churches and was a beautiful pattern of a devoted Christian life.
I attended her funeral service in November of 2015. I listened to
the words of her mother, her father, her brother, and her sister.
In the home, where the tightest scrutiny is exercised, those who
knew her best spoke highly of her holy life and devoted service.
Former pastors, a Bible School administrator, and a missions
representative also spoke to the fact of Rachel’s love for God.
One mentioned that her life was a pattern of the chorus “Jesus
and Others and You, what a wonderful way to spell JOY,” mentioning that it was the habit of her life to care for others more
than for herself. A national pastor from South Africa paid tribute
to her contribution to the work in Lesotho.
Rachel was born in South Africa of missionary parents. South
Africa was, obviously, born in her heart, because when the time
came to be making life choices, she knew that South Africa was
where God wanted her to be. She had served an earlier term in
South Africa and then recently had returned for another term.
In November, Rachel was in a vehicle which was involved in an
accident... an accident which took her life. At age 30, her physical
life was snuffed out, but her eternal life began in the presence of
the Lord.
Rachel’s quest was for the salvation of souls. During the funeral
service an excerpt from her last recorded message was played. The
broadcast had gone out over a station with a potential listening
audience of 800,000, and she spoke simply, yet compellingly,
urging the spiritually thirsty to come to Christ, the Fountain of
Living Water.
The challenge was raised at the memorial service — who might
be called of God to pick up the torch left flickering in Lesotho,
South Africa, by the death of Rachel Cutler? Who else might accept
the challenge “to be used of God, to show someone the way?”
“As the Father hath sent Me, even so send I you.” ◉

omen of Worth wants you to be aware
of the resources available for our
women today. One of these is an outreach
ministry of the Inter-Church Holiness Convention and designed specifically for women.
The Ladies’ Companion was first printed
in the summer of 1997, the result of the
collaboration of
Valorie Quesenberry and Lucy
Creech who had
both separately
contacted Lois

national director of Women

desire to begin a
The Ladies’ Companion
magazine for the
IHC ladies. Together, they planned and
produced The Ladies’ Companion, serving
as co-editors until the summer of 2007,
when Lucy had to release her TLC duties
because of increasing needs in her family.
The first issues were printed at Kinko’s
Copies and hand-mailed to the subscribers. It was a six-page, black and white
publication, sent out bimonthly. Soon,
the co-editors sought the help of Country
Pines, Inc. of Shoals Indiana, who took
over the printing and mailing. This partnership continues to the present. In the
spring of 2003, TLC switched to glossy,
magazine-type paper with a four-color
front and back cover. And in the summer
of 2008, it became a more compact size,
24 packed pages that fit easily into a purse
or tote bag with full color on half of the
22 CONVENTION HERALD
pages. This is the format that is presently
in use.
Over the last 18 years of ministry, the
goal of The Ladies’ Companion has been
to come alongside Christian women and
give them reading material on topics of
interest to their personal, domestic, and
spiritual lives. Themes of columns during
its tenure have been wide and varied: recipes, decorating, missions, music, marriage,
grooming, clothing, interviews, teaching,
Bible studies, household hints, Q and A,
humor, Christian living, news, parsonage
perspectives, readers’ comments, short stories, and updates from Women of Worth.
Although its target audience is women,
TLC has many secret male readers. So
ladies, keep leaving your copy on the nightstand or coffee table; we are increasing our
readership, one husband at a time!
TLC is a not-for-profit ministry. The cost
of your subscription goes directly into producing the magazine. It is currently mailed
quarterly with a subscription price of $8 per
year and $15 for two years. You may subscribe by sending your payment to Country
Pines, Inc. 11013 Country Pines Rd. Shoals,

PayPal when you visit the Women of Worth
website at www.ihcwomenofworth.com.
The Ladies’ Companion is planned, written
and printed with you in mind, the women
of the Inter-Church Holiness Convention. It
is awesome reading and also a great way
keep up-to-date with what is going on in
Women of Worth. It makes a wonderful gift
for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Christmas, or
other occasions.
