A LEGACY OF HEALING
For Desiree Lancaster, the YWCA of Spokane and YMCA of the Inland Northwest
have played different yet important roles in her life. During her toughest times, the
YWCA was there for her. “I was married 8 years to an abusive man who beat me down
verbally and physically.”
Once her divorce and permanent protection order was finalized, she decided to work
on healing herself and her 4 girls. “I started visiting the YMCA for TRX, Cycling and
Zumba classes – I really enjoyed the classes but never really felt at home.”
Then one day, Desiree noticed an instructor who was always so friendly to everyone
– Wende Jones. “I watched her welcome each and every one who attended her classes
– it was so encouraging. All I can say is she is the spirit of what the YMCA’s mission is!

This is very exciting because not only are the grandparents staying healthy, they are
also spending quality time with the little ones – I love it!”

To the words of Henry Ford, 2013 has been a year of success not just for
the YMCA of the Inland Northwest but for our community as a whole. The
driver of this success can be characterized in one simple word, collaboration.
We live in a wonderfully collaborative community that comes together to
solve those problems which affect our friends and neighbors. Our YMCA is a
significant contributor to the collective impact happening in our community.

Time and again our YMCA has proven to be the cornerstone of many
partnerships and collaborations. We have been able to take our core purpose
of giving everyone a safe place to learn, grow and thrive beyond our walls
and into the community for the benefit of all.
Some examples of this collective impact include:
• When the American Cancer Society made a decision nationally to focus
on research, it came at the expense of their long standing summer camps
for children with cancer. However, they and their partners in the community
reached out to YMCA Camp Reed to explore our willingness to become
the new operator and home for Camp Goodtimes. Y staff and Camp Reed
board members came together, developed and submitted a proposal which
accentuated the fact that the Y is this community’s oldest not for profit and
Camp Reed has been changing young people’s lives for nearly 100 years
(2015). Our strong stewardship of contributed dollars, our longevity and our
commitment to quality proved to be a winning combination and beginning
the summer of 2014 children battling and recovering from cancer will have a
summer camp free of charge for years to come.
• The Act Six Leadership and Scholarship Initiative seeks to develop
urban and community leaders throughout the northwest by providing full
tuition scholarships to eight deserving high school seniors each year at a
number of faith based institutions of higher learning. Locally Gonzaga and
Whitworth Universities generously provided these scholarships but there
was also a pressing need for a local partner to work with these students
throughout the year providing guidance, mentorship and support as they
worked towards the ultimate goal of being one of the scholarship recipients.
The YMCA of the Inland Northwest was the logical choice given its wonderful
track record for community youth development and became the partner
with Gonzaga and Whitworth to continue this program of impact in our local
community. This collaboration will ensure that a group of ethnically diverse
and mostly first-generation low income students will attain a college degree
with the ultimate goal of making a difference as leaders in their communities.
• The YMCA of the Inland Northwest is a partner agency with Spokane County United
Way. Funding provided by United Way has allowed the Y to live its charitable mission in the
community. Combining this funding with monies raised through our own Annual Campaign, the Y
is able to provide much needed assistance for families seeking quality early childhood education
and before-and-after-school care to those who otherwise would find it unaffordable and out
of reach. Additionally, in support of United Way’s commitment to health, the Y is able to offer
Membership for All which allows individuals and families an affordable membership making
healthy lifestyles accessible to all.
• The challenges of transitioning to high school can be daunting. The Outside the Box Program
in partnership with Spokane Public Schools and North Central High School brings freshmen
together to realize their full potential by working with YMCA staff and volunteers. The program
is designed to help freshman elevate grades and refine skills that they will need in order to
finish high school. Additionally, it helps these young people improve skills in goal setting and
decision making and allows them access to a YMCA facility.
• Collaborations should maximize efficiencies and create great stewardship of donor dollars. No
other collaboration in our community is more of a testament to those goals than the
YMCA/YWCA partnership. Constructing a building together
maximized donated capital funds and allowed each
entity to focus on their specific mission goals under
one roof. This effort transcends partnership; the
YMCA and YWCA have become family.
These are only a few of the dozens of important
community partnerships and collaborations forged by
the YMCA of the Inland Northwest. We understand
the value of working together for collective success
and we thank you for your support of the YMCA
in the past year and look forward to our collective
impact and growth of our charitable mission in the
year to come.

A LEGACY OF IMPACT
• Cancer has touched so many lives in our community…the diagnosis and subsequent treatment
is tremendously difficult and while cancer may leave their bodies it never leaves the lives of
those who have struggled with the disease. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a free program
tailored to fit the specific needs of cancer survivors who are looking to improve their quality
of life following completion of treatment. The YMCA, working with local oncologists, health
professionals and family members provides certified coaches and personal trainers to deliver
a customized program for each individual. This community collaboration ensures a strong
supportive environment allowing participants to heal, become whole and live life to its fullest.
GROWING IN WELLNESS
The Y has helped
us meet our
goals, even more
than anticipated.
Carl and Madison came to the Y because they wanted a healthier lifestyle.
Carl wanted to lower his cholesterol with more exercise than he was getting
walking at the mall and wanted to give his granddaughter Madison (4 ½ years)
healthy habits for life.
She loves her swimming lessons at the Valley YMCA and is looking forward to
Karate and joining the swim team in a couple of years. When asked if she wants
water or a soda, she tells her Grandpa, “Water is healthy for you.” She is off to
a great start living a healthy, active life!
In addition to bringing Madison to swim lessons and open swim, Carl is
happy with the variety of options the YMCA has to offer and can now get his
workouts in six days a week!
Thanks to the great relationships with the Valley YMCA staff, great things are
possible for Carl and Madison!

of the Inland Northwest.
Our swimming programs are more
than simply skill-building. Structured
classes are divided by age and skill
level, and are taught by certified
instructors who guide with praise and
encouragement.
What is an endowment? A financial endowment is a transfer of money or
property donated to an organization. The total value of an organization’s
investments is often referred to as the endowment and is typically organized
as a public charity, private foundation, or trust.
Incorporated in 1992, The Endowment Fund of the YMCA of the Inland
Northwest was developed to provide a means for individuals committed
to youth and families to help perpetuate the unique vision of the YMCA.
Earnings from the fund help underwrite services for children at our branches
as well as Camp Reed. Gifts made to the endowment fund can be made
to support the general mission of the organization or directed to serve a
specific program or purpose.
The Heritage Club is an organization of men and women who have shown
long term interest and support of the YMCA of the Inland Northwest by
either a direct contribution to the Endowment Fund or by including the
YMCA in their estate planning.
By joining the YMCA Heritage Club, members create a promise for
generations to come. That promise builds a legacy to help preserve the
mission of the YMCA. Heritage Club members make the strongest statement
of support to the mission that a friend of the YMCA can make.

Meet the DeArmond Family
Through the Military Outreach Program at the YMCA of the Inland Northwest, my family
is able to enjoy the many programs available to the local community.
We especially enjoy the swim lessons, group exercise classes, family swim time, and
the wonderful and caring employees in Child Watch. Ensuring that my entire family can
remain happy and healthy is very important and the YMCA has been at the heart of our
experience while stationed in Spokane.
Without this program in support of military families who are unable to access on post/
base fitness centers easily, we would have had to drive 30 minutes out of town to the
local Air Force base. Our family is able to spend more quality time together because we
are not spending time in the car away from activities we enjoy doing together.

Carole first heard about the YMCA through
her physical therapist; he suggested she
attend daily. After consulting with her
family physician, she joined the Y through
the National MS Society. She has enjoyed
making friends and being out in the
community. “There is always opportunity
for laughter, and this membership has
provided me with community involvement
that is so important to my emotional wellbeing,” she says.
She enjoys a number of our group exercise
and aquatics classes and credits the
YMCA’s staff with helping her every step of
the way. With improved coordination and
better balance she hasn’t had a “kissing
concrete” moment in a long time. As a
result of her Y activity, she has also been
able to reduce some of the effects MS has
had on her body.
To me, the Y has been
a huge help with my
self-esteem, and
allows me to broaden
my social circle. It
has been a complete
blessing in my life.

Last summer, nearly 2,000 kids spent at least a week of their summer at YMCA Camp Reed.
275 were able to attend because of a scholarship. For many kids, camp is the only opportunity
to get away from the city during the summer and participate in activities such as hiking,
swimming, rock climbing, archery, spending time around a campfire and sleeping under the stars.
