What a wonderful four weeks we had away but it is
always great to get home. Caught up with Lorna and
Paul Christensen in Wodonga - we are the first from
the club to visit. Lorna and Paul, the hospitality shown
to us was wonderful-thank you. They still have a great
affection for their feline friends.
Included in this newsletter is the nomination form
for executive positions in the club for the next twelve
months. Now is the time to put up your hand for what
you can do for the club, too many people are interested
in what the club can do for them. Hope to see some new
names turn up.
Happy motoring.

verandah and suggested that, to provide adequate
winter weather protection, a blind should also be fitted

room to access the toilets and the food service area.

MANAGEMENT ~ MAY 16
3. Library Photocopier – George Wilkinson spoke about
the refurbished photocopier that has been bought to
replace the old machine which was malfunctioning and
overheating causing it to be a potential fire hazard.
George encouraged members to make good use of the

they ask for help should they not be familiar with

private use of the machine and suggested a fee of 10
cents per copy be charged – Management Committee to

for two unframed photos to be framed and for a story
about the photos to be placed in one of the frames. Jeff

significance to Toowoomba and David was asked to
attend to this.

white copy and 20 cents per colour copy with only
paper supplied by the club to be used in the machine.
Carried. George Wilkinson advised that he has placed a
notebook in the library to log usage and faults. The old

4. Use of Concessional Registered Cars for School
Formals – Jeff Cox asked about use of concessional
registered cars for school formals and advice received

is recorded in the Minutes as a club sanctioned run.

Elisabeth Shepherd to e-mail members.
7. 1939 Chev for Sale – Jeff Cox advised that an original
1939 Chev he saw in a shed at St George during the
Lightning Ridge trip is now for sale. Jeff advised it could
be put into service with minimal work and he has the
vendor’s contact details.
8. Enclosing Clubhouse Verandah – Pat Murphy’s
suggestion that the southern end of the verandah also
be enclosed with a blind was discussed. Concerns were
raised that this would channel all verandah traffic
through the main function room and also that it would
limit exit points in event of an emergency situation
arising. Agreed that the southern end of the verandah
not be enclosed but that it be reconsidered at a future
point in time should such a need be seen as necessary in
the light of experience gained after the blinds have been
fitted and used for functions.
There being no further business the meeting closed at
8.40pm.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Morris Minor, launched at the 1948 British Motor
Show, was the first complete car design by the then
plain Mr Alec Issigonis. He intended it to have a flatfour engine, like the Volkswagen, but at the right end!
The wide engine bay and the neatly-packaged torsion
bar front suspension allowed plenty of room for the
horizontal unit, so when, instead, the vertical side valve
four from the Series E Morris 8 (and the later OHV
Austin A Series unit) was installed, the Minor ended up
with really exceptional engine accessibility.
The prototype Minor
was called the Mosquito.
Lord Nuffield hated it,
calling it a “poached egg”.
Even Issigonis wasn’t
completely happy with
his own styling, so he
had the car sawn in half,
and experimented with
different spacing of the
two halves, until at 4
inches (10 cm, but not called that in Britain then!) he
decided the proportions were just right. Since tooling
had already started by this time, the extra width
modifications had to be somehow slotted in - that’s why
the Minor always had that raised ‘band’ feature along
the middle of the bonnet, and why the early ones had
bumpers with extension pieces bolted into the middle.
Since the widened body also meant a wider track, the
Minor became an even better-handling machine that set
new roadworthiness standards for a small British car.
The steering quality, with rack and pinion operation, is
still excellent even by the best current standards.

NATIONAL MOTORING HERITAGE DAY
On the beautiful autumn morning of the 15th of May
several members of the DDVVMC assembled in the
carpark of the Withcott Hotel enroute to Queens Park
Ipswich for the annual QHMC National Heritage day.
We had been in Brisbane for a family function that
weekend so our 1942 Indian Motorcycle and Sidecar
arrived in the trailer.
The area that had been set aside for the event was
packed with a great variety of vehicles. Probably the
biggest attraction was the steam roller which had
previously been owned by the Brisbane City Council.
Several car clubs and individuals also displayed their
beautifully restored and some unrestored cars of all
makes and models, army jeeps, and two beautifully
restored city buses.
The owners of the buses made themselves and their
vehicles available to take many visitors for a scenic drive
around the highlights of Ipswich.
Harry Brazier was awarded a trophy for his FC Holden
while we received the prize for the best motorcycle.
A great day was had by all and as we didn’t find any
vehicles stranded on the return journey we guess all
members arrived home incident free.

ALL HOLDEN DAY - BUNDABERG, MAY 7
I went to Bundaberg to visit family recently and took
the opportunity to also attend the Bundaberg All Holden
Day.
Over 100 Holdens were entered at the car showand the
quality of the cars and the restoration work undertaken
on them was impressive to say the least.
Additionally, there was a display of other makes and
models which also attracted significant interest. While
there were a numberof cars that I had seen at the
showlast year, there were plenty of new comers there
too.
I entered my 1970 HT Holden Belmont Ute in the Stock
HK-T-G Ute & Van Class and it was awarded first place.

LOCKYER SWAP 2016
It was great to see a number of our members down at the
Lockyer Swap, and excellent to see the support for the event
from the general public.
The following is the media release issued by the Swap
Committee, following the successful completion of the event.
Laidley Showground was a hive of activity before daylight on
Sunday morning as Swappers from all over the South East
set up their displays. The keen ones had been in line from
4.30 am waiting for the gates to open at 5.30 and the line-up
extended for a couple of hundred metres.
The reason for the pre-dawn bustle was the LAMA(Lockyer
Antique Motor Association) “Lockyer
Swap”, which has become an annual
event since its inception in 1993.
Swap Co-ordinator Tony Howard said
that approximately 150 sites of various
sizes completely filled the Laidley Show
Ground Arena , and in excess of 1100
people passed through the front gate
from the 6.30am opening time.
Displays were varied, and included a dedicated Tool Sales Stand,
a Battery Reconditioner, stalls specialising in Bric-a Brac items,
old Oil Bottles, Cans and Signs through to hobbyists just wanting
to sell their excess “stuff ”.
Car parts were the premium items of the day, with items from the
Veteran era ( pre 1920) right through to the Classics from the
‘60’s ,70’s and early ‘80’s being sought for and traded.
Visitors were able to walk around and admire a display of
cars from all eras, some of unrestored patina and many fine
examples of the restorers art, and for the “petrol heads”,the ute
display satisfied the urge for extreme.
Swap organisers Gordon Russ and Tony Howard from the
LAMA Swap Committee expressed their thanks to the Lockyer
Valley Regional Council for its support, and in particular
acknowledged the input and support offered by the Late
Mayor Steve Jones, who as many are aware, held a keen interest in
antique vehicles.
Plans are already underway for next year’s event.
The organisers were very pleased with the increased
attendance at the swap, site numbers were up the crowd was
larger and the number of cars on display increased as well.
Swappers also seemed to have greater success and many
went away with many things including some they didn’t
know they wanted!!!

1955 REDEX TRIAL - PART 3
WAR•TIME ROAD CONSTRUCTION
From Mount Isa the road is almost perfect for the next
1,000 miles to Darwin. The good bitumen surface over
which war supplies had rolled, today carries motor
trains, trucks pulling two big trailers loaded with stores
or cattle and even ore from further out for processing at
the Mount Isa mine. But the strain was really taking a
toll now and although the average called for was only
50m.p.h. for the 1,000 miles, four cars retired after
117miles at Camoweal, two more at Tennants Creek and
later eight more failed to reach Darwin in time. Twenty
seven beautiful hours’ rest at Darwin and we used every
minute of it, for after the next “leg” of a thousand miles
we would get only eight hours rest and then another 600
miles to Port Hedland...23 hours driving, 8 resting then
16 more at the wheel! Retracing our steps to Katherine,
still on bitumen, our “158” was ninth car to leave
Darwin (owing to the 12 cars turn around, rotating the
field).
For many the spell at Darwin had been an anxious
worrying time. Was the car still in good enough order
to take into the hardest part of the whole journey-1,800
miles without a garage or repair shop of any kind
with 200 miles or more between homesteads? 1,800
miles of desert! Only four retired at Katherine on the
South-bound trip and soon after Katherine, the six cars
immediately ahead of The Annual Automobile Review
PLYMOUTH missed a turning and left us with no dust
and no delay or baulking.
The average was high enough perhaps, although the run
suited our car and we actually “wasted” about two hours
during the twice-round-the-clock journey, in addition to
three fuel stops for fuel, hand-pumped from 44 gallon
drums, and some refreshments at the wayside inn at
Hall’s Creek. Later cars had a nightmare trip, many lost
points and their penalties for serious damage piled up.
Eleven failed to reach the Fitzroy control in time and
retired.
After the brief rest the field struggled on 300 miles to
Broome and were sent straight on again for the next
660 miles of sand and dust to Port Hedland. Soon after
Broome there is a recently made bush road which proved
to be our downfall. The track runs along the coastal
plain on light, sandy, dusty soil. The road is made by
There an no garages or service stations for over a
thousand miles, and homesteads are 200 or 300 miles
apart, on the road between Katherine and Broome in
Western Australia. Many people used sand tyres for the
more difficult stretches. Fitting was often carried out in
unusual places.

bulldozing adjoining soil into a mound and flattening
the top to make a raised surface about 20 ft. wide. The
road was in shocking condition with huge corrugations
which wracked the cars unmercifully. Any loose fittings,
any articles on a shelf, map lights which were clamped
on and loose tools, all ended on the floor of the car. There
was no speed between 20 and 80m.p.h. which would
smooth out the shattering vibrations caused by the
corrugations on this road.
Competitors wait to be towed through a soft sand (bull dust) patch, South of Broome. The tractor camped
overnight here and when dawn broke it revealed these cars waiting for help.

FANS AND RADIATORS
SUCK IT AND SEE
Many hummocks had to be surmounted and after
topping one of these at 55 m.p.h., the PLYMOUTH
plunged into a deep dust hole and flexed enough to
bring the fan into contact with the radiator core. A blade
turned and our radiator was cut deeply. We saved the
water, in a tea billy and wash basin and set to work
to repair the lacerated tubes. Unlucky too, was a West
Australian competitor (142) who left Broome with a total
of only 79 points lost and his car in perfect condition.
Travelling through dense mallee undergrowth in very
sandy tracks, the car developed an uncontrollable
yawing skid and crashed head-on into a tree, hitting
it in the exact middle of the bumper bar (the weakest
spot), forcing the radiator onto the fan and dislodging
the front cross member and main engine support. On
the other hand, our luck turned for the better, as a team
mate got lost ahead of us, came around in a circle and
met the road behind us, followed it along to us, and gave
us the spare radiator core which he was carrying! The
points lost for a radiator damaged or replaced were of
little consequence to us now.
Here is something I have tried, I won’t be the first and,
hopefully, not the last to try this idea.
Port Hedland was about half way, and here the least
time points lost were 16 for car 90 (VOLKSWAGEN), 27
for car 2 (VW), 36 for car 46 (FORD V8, 1946 model), 42
for car 101 (VANGUARD), 45 for car 136 (HOLDEN), 51
for car 133 (FORD CUSTOMLINE), 83 for car 54 (VW),
and 115 for car74 (HOLDEN) while only five more cars
(2HOLDENS, 1 PEUGEOT, 1 STANDARD VANGUARD
and 1 MORRIS OXFORD) were under 200 points. Our
PLYMOUTH was then down 300 time points, having
lost 230 of them with the radiator. (Because of the
absence of supplies of water on the road we had to
make a perfect job of the repair, but had failed to stop
completely two leaking tubes, when the spare core
arrived.)
Eleven more cars retired at Port Hedland and the
remainder, after a 16-hour rest period, left in better
heart to average 40m.p.h. on roads which literally
improved with every one of the 600 miles to Carnarvon
for more rest. Then a similar journey brought us to a
control near Perth, almost the whole of the last two
sections being on bitumen.

PHOTOS.M.P.U.
Back in the dreamtime, when the Whippet was being
restored, it came time to overhaul the gearbox. Like all
good gearboxes, when I removed the drain plug, a thick
black goo came out. It protested, but did eventually
succumb to gravity overnight.
After dismantling, washing and inspection, all was
revealed: the gears were in good usable condition, but
all of the bearings had seen better days and so were
replaced, both clutch and main shaft bearings. Now the
cluster shaft bushes were unserviceable, so I knocked
them out for replacement. They were original, as they
had “Overland” imprinted into them. That got me
thinking as to how I could reuse them, as they were a
beautiful, coppery colour, unlike the bronze that one gets
from the bearing companies, which is a brassy colour.
First, I gave them a good cleaning, then put quite a lot
of solder on the outside, not resin core but 60/40 stick
solder. Now the tricky parts starts: I put the bushes
between centres and with a bit of effort turned most of
the high points off, aiming to have a reasonable round
section at this stage.
Next, I cut a slot in the bush, back in the lathe and
squeeze it round, try the shaft, still sloppy, another
cut, back in the lathe again, try the shaft, a guess that
should do as shaft will not fit. The second one needed
another cut; remember it’s suck it and see. Hang on to
as little of the bush as you are game, measure bore of
cluster gear and machine outside of bush. I left about 5
thou press fit, turn bush and machine other end. Press
bushes into cluster, this peels quite a bit of solder off
and makes for a tight fit. Fingers crossed that the bush
has reduced enough to allow for a good reaming fit to
remove all the hills and hollows: suck it and see.
Luck held out and I ended up, after reaming, with
a beautiful smooth finish: 2 thou shaft fit, a bit of a
fiddle with the oil grooves , a good wash and blow job
of everything, then assembly. That was done about 40
years ago.
I dismantled the box ten years ago, as low gear wants to
rattle a bit on a light load. The cluster bushes have not
moved and there is no sign of wear in them. The gear
rattle, I put down to too much clearance between the
main shaft and sliding gear splines (the original oil was
140+). I run 80w/90 oil in the box, (this is probably a bit
light letting the gears rattle and it loses a bit (with no
seals I check regularly) but with no wear in the cluster
shaft bushes, this proves things get lubricated.
Changing gears is never a problem at any time, even in
winter with the lighter oil and I believe it also cuts back
on any gear mesh noise.
Gear mesh noise and gear box oil, well that’s another
story.
Well there it is, my ramblings of restoration and suck it
and see.
Cheers Jeff Cox

DAVID HACK DAY
Although the day started off quite chilly, and the low
clouds threatened rain, the weather held for this year’s
David Hack Day.
There was quite the assortment of vehicles on display,
with several clubs in attendance. Our club was split
between the army vehicles and the vintage display; the
classic cars and those special few in front of the hangar.
Other clubs present included the British Ford Car Club of
Queensland, Kustoms of Australia (up from the Gold Coast),
the Rover Car Club of Queensland, and the Morris Car Group
of Ipswich. As in previous years, the Mini Club was there in
force, as the event features in the Mini Monte Run. Special
space was also given to a multitude of BMWs, with an eclectic
mix of models, as the brand celebrated a milestone, complete
with a chorus of horns at 11am.
Other noteworthy vehicles were present, such as the 1930
Model A Briggs Sedan, which counted only 38minutes
since restoration completion at 10am; two brand new 2016
Mustangs, segregated to keep them special; the 3 replica
vintage race cars and the Bandag Bullet belching smoke and
flame!
While flying was delayed until the weather cleared, there were
