Round Up for Recreation
and
To reserve one of two community sign
boards; or a room at the recreation center or
a shelter facility at Raab Park, Muriel Iverson
Williams Waterfront Park or Nelson Park, call
the Parks and Recreation Office at 360-7799898. A reservation fee is charged for sign and
facility rentals.
This is a fee-reduction/scholarship program,
which you, the community, can support with
donations.
Any time you register for a program and
want to give a little back to your community in
need, just “round up” your payment amount
and we’ll put it into the fund. A space has
been provided for you on the registration form
on page 3.
For instance, if a gymnastics class costs
$35, you could round up the payment to $40.
$5 would then go into the Round Up for
Recreation fund. Thank you for helping.

Creative Drama for Youth
4 wks
Kimberly Parker. A fun, dynamic form of
play. Drama games help children explore their
imaginations and discover their own creativity.
By improvising a wide variety of scenes and
situations, students learn to express themselves physically and emotionally while gaining increased awareness of the feelings and
experiences of others. A dramatic game gives
dramatic expression to something you IMAGINE. To add more fun and excitement, we
provide an assortment of colorful, whimsical
masks, scarves and stage props to play with.
Drama games encourage and develop social
skills, communication, trust, confidence, selfesteem and teamwork. Student showcase last
day for family and friends. No class May 27.
Kimberly Parker has been bringing her
passion and enthusiasm for Drama to children and families for more than 20 years. She
teaches in schools, community centers and offers private parties. She holds a BA in Theater
Arts with an emphasis on arts education and
is the founder of STAGES: Creative Drama for

Interesting Inventions 3 wks
Bricks 4 Kidz ®. Most objects we use on
a daily basis were invented by someone. Find
out the origins of things like the hand mixer,
windshield wipers and conveyor belts. During
this Bricks 4 Kidz® unit, students will discuss
the difference between an invention and a discovery, learn how inventions solve problems,
and find out how inventors get their ideas patented. Each week, students are encouraged
to think of what they could invent, or improvements they could make to an existing object
to solve a problem. Introduce your student to
the world of ideas, creativity, inventions and
patents. Each week, we will construct different
familiar objects using LEGO® bricks such as a
hand mixer, windshield wipers and a conveyor
belt. Each model is motorized for maximum
movement and fascination! Start creating! Poulsbo Elem

sneak in lots of learning, too – understanding
probability in the “3-in-a-row” game model and
learning about friction and symmetry with the

Coaches, Coaches, Coaches!
It’s never been more important! Families, community, and individuals joining together for our young people.
In order to be successful, youth sports
programs need caring, compassionate adults
who are willing to devote some of their limited
time to the kids. You don’t have to be an expert
on the sport of choice! We have lots of helpful
resources, including people that are willing to
help you help our kids enjoy themselves.
This is quality time for our young people.
They are practicing physical and mental skills,
interacting with their peers and adults in a
healthy atmosphere, and learning the ability to
compete towards a goal as a team and as an
individual. Call Joe at Parks and Rec, 360731-1938, for more information on this valuable opportunity.

Creative Drama for Youth Camp4 classes
Kimberly Parker. A fun, dynamic form of
play. Drama games help children explore their
imaginations and discover their own creativity.
By improvising a wide variety of scenes and
situations, students learn to express themselves physically and emotionally while gaining increased awareness of the feelings and
experiences of others. A dramatic game gives
dramatic expression to something you IMAGINE. To add more fun and excitement to the
creative process, we provide an assortment of
colorful, whimsical masks, scarves and stage
props. Drama games encourage and develop
social skills, communication, trust, confidence,
self-esteem and teamwork. Student showcase
last day for family and friends.
Kimberly Parker has been bringing her
passion and enthusiasm for Drama to children and families for more than 20 years. She

Boys and Girls, Grades 3-8 in Sept 2013.

This is the perfect opportunity to learn about
the fastest game on two feet and to improve
one’s lacrosse skills. The camp is offered by
the North Kitsap Lacrosse Club and will cover
the skills of lacrosse - catching, throwing, cradling, checking, play of the game, rules, etc.
Individual skill work, drills and team competitions will be an integral part of the camp. The
camps are open to all regardless of residency.
The registration deadline is Fri, Jun 14. Refundable deposits of $75 for use of boy’s
equipment (stick, helmet, pads and gloves)

North Kitsap Summer Sailing Camps Sailing lessons will be offered again this
summer for ages 8-18. Camps will be held
at the Port of Kingston next to the boat ramp.
There will be all-day camps for students 11
and older using a variety of boats, and halfday camps in the Opti boats for 8- to 12-yearold sailors.
Students must have beginner swimming skills and provide their own Coast
Guard-approved life jackets. The all-day
classes will be conducted in Byte class sailboats, a 12-foot, self-righting dinghy that was
developed especially for junior training. The
Opti is used for our younger sailors, and is a
more stable design for our younger sailors, although it performs very well in a breeze. Opti
class sailboats have been used around the
world for many years as a junior trainer.
The purpose of our sailing camps is to
learn sailing skills, boating safety, and to have
fun! Please remember, however, that sailing
can at times be dangerous and students must
be willing to work hard each day. Capsizing
for the “fun” of it will not be tolerated. A Coast
Guard-approved life jacket must be worn at
all times when on the dock and in the water.
Students will need to bring a sack lunch, a
beverage with extra water for hot days, swimsuit, change of clothes, soft-soled footwear
(something you do not mind getting wet), sunscreen, sunglasses and/or a hat, and clothing
appropriate for the weather. Wetsuits will be
used on inclimate weather days only; bring
your own if you have one. Opti sailors will not
need wet suits. On cool days, you may need
extra clothing. For further information, call
Parks and Recreation at 360-779-9898.

Creating Imaginary Creatures in Watercolor
Dana Marrs. Creating original and quirky
creatures is a silly endeavor but the process is
a serious study of watercolor technique! We
will use washes, glazing with 2 or 3 layers,
wet blending and textures. We will use found
shapes from the most unlikely sources. We
will learn to draw and paint eyes, snouts, ears,
paws and tails. To all that, we will add a few
fearless mixed-media touches like white ink,
paper collage and iron-on transfers. With luck,
we will have a handful of creatures suitable
for framing. Previous watercolor experience
recommended. Materials list is available. If
you wonder if the materials you already own
are suitable, you are encouraged to call the
instructor. Recreation Center Kitchen.

vegetable operation in 1974, which was strictly
a family affair. A 14 x 14 ft. greenhouse structure was built, and a few houseplants were

was built...and then another. Things expanded
from there, until a major remodel built a 32,500

from Belgium. The new structure and space
has allowed Watson’s to offer an extended gift

some beautiful blooms. This year we’ve set up
some new and fun things to do in the valley.
First we’ll pick up our navigator and tour guide
from the WSU Discovery Garden, who will
join us on our full-sized charter bus (please
meet at St. Olaf’s Catholic Church on Caldart Ave). After complementary cookies and
coffee and a tour of their garden, we’re off for
a 3-hour tour of the tulip fields while hearing
a running commentary about the area’s tulip
industry, bird migrations, agricultural industries, and numerous other facts regarding this
unique valley. We will stop at Roozengaarde
Display Garden with its 3 acres of 300,000
bulbs and then after lunch, proceed to Tulip
Town with its numerous shops and displays.
Lunch will be at the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ
at a cost of $12 adult or $10 senior plate. If
you are not a salmon eater, please feel free
to bring a brown bag lunch. Fee includes
charter bus transportation, ferry, and tour
guide. Admission to the two gardens ($5
each) and lunch is on your own.

$43
sales tax $3.70
Total $46.70
Today we have a mix of current and past
looks in the northwest. We’ll start at the Dunn
Gardens in North Seattle. The tour begins as a
docent relates the 85-plus years of Dunn family involvement with these expansive grounds.
Plants in the gardens range from diminutive
trilliums, no more than an inch tall, to Douglas firs towering more than 150 feet in the air.
New and old intermingle, as plants dating back
to the 1910’s coexist happily with those just
set into the soil. Woodland gardens, perennial
borders, and great sweeps of lawn are just a
few of the elements that make up the garden.
Then we head north into Edmonds, where
we’ll enjoy lunch downtown before visiting
the Edmonds Historical Museum. One floor
features an exhibit gallery which offers temporary rotating displays, a diorama depicting the
1910 Edmonds town site and waterfront, and
the Cook Victorian Parlor. The ground floor
consists of the long-term exhibit conceived to
commemorate the centennial of the incorporation of the City of Edmonds 1890/1990. Fee
includes ferry, transportation and tour;
lunch is on your own.
