St. Patrick's Day Parade
The early parades were necessarily very small affairs. The club had few members,
and perhaps because of our Irish zeal, we insisted on holding the parades on the
true St. Patrick’s Day, regardless of where in the week it fell. So, logically, if it fell on
a Tuesday in March in the mid 1980’s, participants and attendees were pretty thin
and dedicated.
After the second year, Buck Mann and Rick Meehan took over the parade and it
immediately began its steady growth to the very popular event it is today. Buck,
who owned McGee’s Irish Pub on the Boardwalk (today’s Shenanigan’s), convinced
the club to have the parade on a Saturday and arranged with Rick’s help to secure
the 45th Street Village parking lot for an Irish festival. Soon Irish music and Irish
dancers were entertaining thousands of parade viewers who would follow the end
of the parade into the parking lot. Beverage and food sales were a logical addition,
and the club had found a way to defray parade expenses and even raise money for
its charitable endeavors.
All these years later, it is still Buck that starts the parade promptly at noon from 61st
Street and it is Rick that organizes the 45th Street Village parking lot and oversees
all the entertainment and fund raising efforts. That being said, it must be mentioned
that there are more than 100 volunteers working some aspect of the parade.
The parade now highlights one of Ocean City’s shoulder seasons. The St. Patrick’s
Day Parade is the un-official start of the summer season for Ocean City. There
is no question that thousands of people come down for the parade, choosing this
weekend to open up their condominiums or just get a hotel room for a fun filled
and colorful beach weekend. The parade is a sea of green, alive with pipe bands and
school bands, and the creativity of the local floats will make you smile. Everybody
has fun and this is small town Americana at its best.
Of course, from the Delmarva-Irish American Clubs point of view it’s a great way
to celebrate our Irish heritage. The fact that local business and Ocean City guests
also benefit, well, all the better. This year the club is especially honored to have
a representative from the Irish Embassy join us. Kevin Conmy, Deputy Chief of
Mission, will drive over from Washington to walk with the club members.
This year’s parade will be the biggest ever. We will definitely have the most
participants ever and are expecting record crowds. And from a parade participant
point of view, the spectators are as interesting as the parade itself, Walking down the
highway seeing generations of Irish descendants, all dressed up in green, can’t help
but make you smile. They’re certainly having an Ocean City memory.

H
Harry and Kathy James
arry and Kathy James moved from the Greenbelt, Maryland area outside of
DC ten years ago, to Ocean View, Delaware. Harry grew up in western Pennsylvania,
after serving in the US Navy he graduated from the University of Maryland and
then earned his Master’s Degree while working as Assistant Recreation Director for
the City of Greenbelt. He worked there for 30 years. Kathy is a native of Greenbelt.
She has an Associate’s Degree in Business Management and held down a variety
of jobs. A few of her favorite jobs include – Social Director for a Condominium
Association and Office Manager for Ledo Pizza Systems’ corporate office.
They have a son, Andy Bray and a daughter, Michelle and son-in-law Mike
Callow. They have one beloved grandchild, Patrick Michael Callow. Patrick spends
a lot of time at the beach with his grandparents. Kathy and Harry are particularly
fond of Irish music and have passed this on to their children and grandson. Patrick
considers “Mr. James from, “Off the Boat,” his rock star!
Kathy and Harry became very involved with Project Children, a group who for
37 years has been bringing children from Northern Ireland to spend four to six
weeks with families here in the States. Harry and Kathy have been a host family for
19 children over the last fifteen years. They have gone to Northern Ireland to visit
the children,(many who are now grown) and met the families. Harry celebrated his
60th birthday at McDonald’s in Belfast with many of their former “Irish kids and
their families”. It was a grand celebration!
One of the first things Kathy and Harry did after moving to Delaware was joining the Delmarva Irish American Club. Both have made many friends and enjoy
helping out and socializing with the members.
Harry is a substitute teacher in the Indian River School District, mostly at
Sussex Central High School. He is known to many of the kids as “our favorite sub”.
He also attends many of their sports events. Kathy keeps busy line dancing, taking
water aerobics classes, volunteer work and many social activities. Harry and Kathy
also enjoy traveling and are trying to complete their goal of visiting all fifty states
as well as many other places on their bucket list.
