Yet, as we all know, their little webbed feet are paddling furiously below the water to keep them afloat and moving forward. Those ducks remind me of our recent state convention, where everything went smoothly, and we all had a chance to enjoy the activities, as well as spend time with each other. You may not have realized how fast so many people were paddling to make everything look so calm. I would like to thank the many members who worked hard to make the convention a success, who included the following: Co-Chairs: Karen Boyk and Sandi Spencer Registrations: Pam Hoffman, Chair Patti Bannasch, Cindy Clement, Irene Sharpe, Karen Linnell, Susan McKinnon, Christine Dagenais, Beverly Pintar, Carol Pyke, Kathy Rice, Linda Kevorkian, Linda Schnorbus Greeters: Cindy Clement, Lead Najwa Khuri, Marjorie Dilido, Kitty Stephenson Meal Hostesses: Colette Stager, Lead Joanne Brown, Joan Birney, Christine Dagenais Hospitality Room: Kitty Stephenson, Jacqueline Werner, Geetha Balakrishnan Technology: Jean Ivory, Lead Sally Kendrick, Cindy Guerrieri Branch Website: birmingham-mi.aauw.net Friday Reception: Bulletin Editor: Marion Muma Colette Stager, Lead Patti Bannasch, Joanne Brown, Marjorie Dilido, Pam Hoffman, Najwa Khuri Centerpieces: Joanne Brown Publicity: Marion Muma 248-792-9780 Bulletin copy deadline is the 10th of the previous month. Now we will get our ‘ducks in a row’ for our September book sale, and I know many of you will be part of the summer activities - both above and below the water. Have a great summer! Sue Longstreet CONGRATULATIONS TO LINDA SCHNORBUS, WHO WON THE 50-50 RAFFLE DRAWING AT OUR MAY 11th LUNCHEON. JUNE 2016 AAUW BULLETIN 3 WELCOME TO NEW MEMBER: Alberta Lupin 1920 Shore Hill Drive Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302 248-335-9653 Wayne State University IMPORTANT: DIRECTIONS TO SORTING - SUMMER 2016 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BOARD MEETING Wednesday, May 11, 2016 We are sorting this summer at the Bloomfield High School Dublin Building and sharing space with Bloomfield Youth Services. THE DIRECTIONS FOR SORTERS: The site is behind the Physical Plant office across from the new BHS high school on Andover Road. Take Andover Road to the parking lot for Staff and Visitors and Parking Lot C. If you are coming south on Andover (which means you have accessed Andover from Long Lake), the parking lot is just before the Physical Plant; if you are coming north on Andover (which means you have accessed Andover from Telegraph), then the parking lot is just after the Physical Plant. Either way, the parking lot is east of the new high school. Drive to the very back of that lot which is Parking Lot C to park. You’ll have to cut across a small patch of grass to get to the sorting site. We’ll eventually wear a path that you can find easily. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE ELSE FOR SORTING. If you are a barrel picker or delivering home pickups: Take Andover Road to Dublin Drive on the east side of Andover Road; you can only turn east on Dublin Drive. Follow it around to the Dublin Building and pull in to the semi-circle drive in front to unload. We will NOT be parking in that drive except to unload. It shouldn’t take long for us to get into our summer routine, but if you run into problems, call Pam Hoffman, 248-770-8476 or Carol Pyke, 248-2256698, and we’ll talk you in. Treasurer Sally Doty reported that the total assets as of April 30, 2016 were $28,027.54, and the net assets were $26,987.54. President Sue Longstreet reported that: Diane Bert was awarded as our Champion at the Race Relations and Diversity Champion breakfast. (see pg. 8). Women’s Equality Day luncheon will be held on August 20. (see calendar pg. 1) The Haven is requesting donations for their summer program. Vice President for Membership Sandra Dickerson announced that a new member tea will be held in June, the date and location to be announced. Fundraising representative Patty Orlowski reported that our branch fundraising policy will be reviewed and updated by the committee, and it will be posted to our web site when completed. Jean Ivory reported that she will be implementing some new ideas from AAUW for our website this summer. Lynn Hipp reported that the study and interest group chairs brunch will be held June 8 at 11 am at Kerby’s Coney Island. (see calendar pg. 1) Carol Pyke explained that the sorting location this summer is located across from the new Bloomfield Hills High School. (see directions to sorting on the left.) Think of it! In 1926 twenty-some women held the first sale to raise money for scholarships for high school girls. Here we are 90 years later doing the same thing on a scale we only hope they could imagine! Sorting will begin on June 14 at the Bloomfield Hills Schools Dublin Building. We’ll sort on Tuesdays/ Thursdays from 9:30—noon until mid-August. It primarily involves putting books pre-sorted for condition and age into 26+ categories. This is a new location with some logistical issues, so we’ll sort a bit differently this Carol Pyke, Treasurer year. (see pg. 3 for driving directions.) Dorie Marshall is AAUW Birmingham Branch Foundation, Inc. chair of sorting; call her if you are interested: 248-4804422. One of the huge jobs of the summer is picking up HAVE YOU RENEWED YOUR KROGER REWARDS books from our blue barrels at 12 drop-off sites in Troy, Bloomfield Hills, Southfield and Royal Oak. We also CARD? OR WANT TO SIGN UP FOR ONE? urge those volunteers to pre-sort for condition before This is a painless way to raise funds for our missions bringing their loads to sorting. Carol Pyke, summer chair, handles that operation which requires almost 100 (no books to sort or lift). We don’t get a lot of money volunteers. Call Carol if you can help with barrels: 248from this, but a few hundred dollars a year can only 203-2952. Another part of book collection is home pickhelp. There is no cost to you, so sign up and save ups for large numbers of books; Kathy Rice schedules money, Also, every year in May, Kroger requires rethose; call her if you can do that: 248-642-4764. enrollment. See directions and/or sign up on their website: www.Kroger.com. The weekend of the sale, September 9—11, 2016, again requires a large number of volunteers. Pam You will need to have our branch Kroger Community Hoffman chairs that part of the sale which involves unpacking boxes on Friday morning, setting up and Rewards Enrollment Number: tearing down boxes (a skill none of us should be without), working the floor to tidy and straighten all #90487 weekend, handing out bags for bag day, helping in the kitchen. Sally Kendrick schedules the floor workers for WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! the weekend and would appreciate volunteers; call her: 248-593-5651 to schedule a time. Please watch your email blasts from Sally Doty for important directions and information as we go through the summer AND for information and volunteer requests for the weekend. Last year we raised almost $12,000 for our local scholarships and contributions. Almost 2/3 of the branch members contribute in whatever way they can. We hope you will too and continue the legacy of our branch’s founders. Thanks in advance for your help. Pam Hoffman, Dorie Marshall, Carol Pyke, Coco Siewert JUNE 2016 AAUW BULLETIN 6 Patron Donor Friend Contributor Fund One of the most gratifying aspects of the book sale is giving up to $100 worth of free books and materials to teachers in the tri-county area on Saturday from 1:00—5:00. We offset that potential loss of income to the book sale through the Patron Donor Friend Contributor (PDF) Fund. While the money we raise from the book sale itself stays locally, the money from PDF goes to AAUW Funds nationally to support the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, Legal Advocacy Fund, Leadership Fund and Public Policy, among others, and our own Jean Ivison Walker Project and Research Grant. Last year, 85 branch members contributed almost $11,000 through the PDF to support AAUW Funds nationally. You should receive a letter in mid-July with more information about PDF. Please contribute whatever you can to support women all over the country! JUNE 2016 AAUW BULLETIN 7 Explorathon 2016 Our annual STEM project for young women occurred on March 23 at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Girls, our third year at that venue. Our 356 enrolled came from Ecorse, Woodhaven, Warren, Harper Woods, Melvindale, Detroit, Livonia, Wyandotte, Canton, Ferndale, Oak Park, and from our own back yards, West Bloomfield and Birmingham—and all points in between. We offered twenty workshops in seven STEM areas and also offered concurrent workshops for the chaperones. While the weather held and the day went smoothly and we had wonderful feedback from attendees, we did have one fatality in Workshop 4, “Protecting the Great Lakes from Vampire Fish.” The presenter brought a lamprey eel which expired sometime early in the workshop day. She was philosophical, noting: “It had ‘been on its last legs’ for quite a while!” And, “It was easier for the girls to handle—not quite so wiggly.” One great new idea came from committee member Karen Boyk who suggested we have sticky notes and markers at the lunch tables and tri-fold boards so participants could write their comments about Explorathon. The comments were poignant, insightful, helpful and funny. See related article. We are so grateful to Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Girls and the Cranbrook staff who contributed greatly to the day’s success. A special thanks to the Explorathon committee and all our volunteers who remarked on the politeness and maturity of our attendees. It was a most fulfilling day for all! Thank you, Sally Doty, Pam Hoffman and Chris Salley Groves and Seaholm High School students who attended 2016 Explorathon “Heard it at Explorathon” The chaperone from Melvindale schools wrote a note about one of her students who comes from an indescribably difficult home life: “Yesterday was very special when [the student] told me she is going to be an engineer after attending the workshop. That is what Explorathon is all about—creating that spark!” Indeed. From the lunchroom stickies: “I liked my lunch”; “better food”; “need more time in workshops”; “I learned that the female pelvis is bigger than the male pelvis”; “neurophsycology is awesome!”; “touch more skulls in forensic anthropology”; “positive atmosphere”; “I really liked that all women are teaching us. The women are smart and strong”; “Accounting rocks!” and, “I learned not to give up because it will lead to amazing opportunities!” We probably gathered over 400 comments and will try to act on as many as are feasible for Explorathon next year.
