Inclined to AAUW - AAUW Johnstown Branch
Inclined to AAUW
May/June 2016
Volume XXII, No. 3
Johnstown Branch of American Association of University Women
By Georgia Yeager
It’s that time again when we need the help of all members to collect, sort and pack books for the June 8-11 sale. Ann
Fattman has arranged for volunteers at all the collections sites. (Thanks, Ann!) Don’t forget to pick up books when you
are scheduled.
We are lucky to have partners in Giant Eagle, Family Video, Randy’s Bi Lo, Ace Hardware, Ameriserv, and YWCA,
and we want to keep them happy by picking up the books before they tumble out of the collection boxes!
Rita King has again volunteered to schedule workers for the actual sale. (Thanks Rita!) When Rita passes around the
sign-up schedule, please be as generous as possible with your time, and if you can, sign up for two or more shifts to
work at the sale. This year we have arranged new shift times for more efficient use of volunteers. The new shifts
should eliminate too many people at some points and too few at others.
Ann Furlong is scheduling book-sorting sessions at Ace Hardware, basically on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 1
and 3 pm. (Thanks, Ann!) If you are able to sort, please contact Ann so that she can make sure you are on the email
list for sorting notifications.
Once again Lee Rager has agreed to research and price valuable old books. (Thanks, Lee!)
Westmont Hilltop School District is closing their high school library and donating the books to AAUW. We are thankful
for this wonderful supplement to the books gathered from collection sites.
This is a good time for all members to weed their own bookshelves for donations to the sale!

Patty Bailey and I attend the AAUW-PA Convention at Tannersville, PA , April 15-17th. Featured speakers were Cordy Gilliagan, Vice President of Marketing of AAUW and Catherine Hill,
Vice President of Research for AAUW. Dr. Hill presented the newest AAUW Research report:
Barriers and Bias: The Status of Women in Leadership. I have a copy of the report and a power
point of the research which I hope to share with you in future meetings. Other workshops attended: "Get out the Vote: Toolkit to Turn-out", the AAUW-PA business meeting and the Western
District Meeting. One of the interesting things learned at the District Meeting was that Johnstown
Branch has been chosen to host the 2018 state convention. Quite a surprise!
Our branch was applauded for having the largest increase in membership, 33%
since 2013 and was awarded a certificate for that honor. Dottie Glass
(Outstanding Woman) and Barbara Zaborowski (Member Making a Difference)
were also awarded certificates.
The state members were very happy to announce that 10 student affiliates have
been formed in the last year. The state is also attempting to archive agendas,
minutes, finance reports and yearbooks for all branches and we were provided
with the necessary information to archive our branch.
The Johnstown Branch supplied a display of our year's accomplishments. The display is seen in
the picture with member Patty Bailey.
An enjoyable theater presentation, "The Talbot Story" was presented by various members that
gave an insightful look into the life of one of our founders, Marion Talbot. The feature presenter,
Heather Mason, told of our her fight as a plaintiff in a equity case against the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She and her fellow plaintiffs were "stuck on 2nd base" until the AAUW and its
Legal Advocacy Fund decided to support her case. She and her two co-plaintiffs were awarded a
$100,000,000 settlement and the University of Tennessee's practices are now under judicial review. AAUW does have clout! Our organization does matter!
I encourage all members to attend district and state meetings and have the opportunity to meet
some very strong, motivating women.
A reminder that the next business meeting will be held at 6:00 PM
on Monday, May 23, 2016 at Hoss's Restaurant on Theatre Drive.
Action items include: approving the 2016-2017 budget, by-laws
amendments, and election of officers.
A travelogue about Peru will be provided by members Cynthia Watters and Doris Leidy. Members may order dinner or just coffee and
dessert from the menu, if they so desire.
Do you know this lady? Yes, it is Judy Petrusic, our Branch Photographer Extraordinaire! Judy is a two year member and has given of her time and skills to
provide our branch with great memories of meetings and special events. Judy is
a two time winner of the Tribune-Democrat Photography Contest and delights her
family and friends with pictures and videos of their special events. Don't forget to
check the memories at Flicker.com/photos/aauwjohnstown/albums
Thank you, Judy

For nearly 135 years, AAUW has brought people together for the common goal of breaking through
educational and economic barriers for women and girls. We’ve been successful because of the high
value of membership we strive to provide for everyone who joins. Part of that value stems from our
portfolio of services and benefits designed to enhance our members’ professional and personal lives
— and save them money, too! Every time members use these benefits, they support AAUW’s vital
work: With each purchase, AAUW receives a royalty that supports our programming.
AAUW is pleased to announce a new member benefit with Target that allows members to participate in weekly flash sales. For every sale, AAUW earns up to 5 percent commission. Just click on
the Target link on the member benefits page, and all sales or registries you make from there will
support AAUW. And make sure you check out our other exciting member benefits, including access
to films intended to empower women.
