On the business side of things, the staff spent a great
deal of time getting The One Bride Guide systems
and processes streamlined and working like a welloiled machine (we have a new fancy database). With
increasing costs of operations for the parent company,
McLeod Creative, we decided to restructure the business, reduce our full-time staff and go back to basics now that those systems are set up. I now divide
my time between the home office and the downtown
office (and Stella of course) and I will be handling
all advertising. Sara Martisek and Bettie Billings are
freelancing, helping with wedding fairs, deliveries
and such, and Ashley Rippke is still helping design the
magazine from her new digs in Nashville! Dan Gaines
found a new home at Texas A&M Kingsville (where
coincidentally his wife works - carpool!). They are
lucky to have him and we’ll miss him! Please excuse
our dust as we make this transition. Reducing costs
for us will not affect the quality of the magazine or
our future. In fact, we are still working on expanding, especially online. These changes mean our ad
prices will not go up as our costs
have inevitably gone up –
good news for our loyal
advertisers!!

What was your inspiration for this shoot? I wanted
to do something totally different and outside the box
that would push "edgy" bridal portraiture into the
world of fashion. The purpose was to show Brides
that bridal portraits don’t have to be "dresses fanned
out standing on a staircase". I drew inspiration from
all the creative minds involved.
What is the difference staging your own shoot as opposed to shooting “day of”? Bridal or Engagement
shoots are very relaxed. We use this as a time to get
the couple or Bride used to how we shoot, give her
pointers on how to pose, and get them used to acting
natural in front of my camera. We talk A LOT. I try to
get to know them as best I can so that I can bring those
personalities out on their wedding day. "Day of" is a
bit different. Everyone gets so caught up in the flow of

I love making my couples feel like rock stars.
My portraits are a bit
edgy, but I believe that’s
what draws couples to
my work. For the past
few years, I’ve been
exploring the world of
what I call "foto couture". Foto couture is
bridal portraiture with
a high fashion flair. I
start with the Bride and
her dress, and add accessories that reflect
her personality. It can
be a flaming red pair of
heels or oversized sunglasses, belts or chunky jewelry, whatever she likes,
then I build a scene around her. The end result is a
fresh, avant-garde twist to bridal portraiture.

Any special challenges? The original makeup artists we hired to fly in cancelled on
me at 11pm the night before
the shoot. I was making
frantic calls until 1am
trying to secure replacements. Luckily
Jaime was finishing up at the Vogue
school and had
a wealth of talent
to pull from. She
brought Trish and
Dionicio, who were
absolutely AMAZING!
Everything works out the way
it’s supposed to because all three
of them rocked! Another challenge was the time.
With only 1 makeup artist and 3 hair stylists doing
masks and elaborate hair designs, it took an unbelievable amount of time to complete the looks. Amanda
stepped in and did the green mask on Cassandra. We
had moms holding up props, throwing feathers, etc.,
it was a mess... but they all did absolutely great!!
the day, they are able to forget I’m there. I get more
natural reactions out of them. This is when I believe
my knack for capturing the height of emotion shines.
el
Personally, I am experiencing a vintage theme of
my own by becoming a mom! Stella Kathleen Sawyer
was born on May 25th, 2010 weighing 8lbs, 13 oz,
measuring 21.5 inches! My husband Ryan and I are
exploring good ole' fashioned roles of husband and
wife as I do most of the early nurturing while he takes
on the hard work and stress of making sure the bacon shows up somehow. And sometimes that vintage
theme goes all the way back to the caveman era as we
work out our differences with our new responsibilities as mom and dad - especially me being a "working mom" and how that translates to sharing duties.
Communication is key with a couple joined for life,
and based on our success so far, I highly recommend
graduating your twosome to a threesome or more by
starting a family!
This issue, we decided to open up The One cover to all photographers to submit their
ideas. Sarah Diane Photography was our winning choice for this festive holiday season.
od
One of my delights
in putting The One
Bride Guide together is sorting through all of the
photos contributed by the talented local photographers and discovering what trends have arrived based
on the styles and techniques used in the photographs.
In this issue of The One, the overwhelming theme is
VINTAGE (with a little twist of avant-garde thrown
in). From soft lenses to muted colors, vintage themes
are coming up everywhere. Check out the Style section
on page 8 for some of my favorites. Deux Boheme,
a new photographer team to grace our pages, has a
lovely vintage touch and we are happy they made it in
the issue just in time! Welcome to The One!

Blessings in Disguise
After shooting the cover, model Shana Larson was
in a head-on collision. She escaped with minor injuries, but in the process, doctors discovered a mass
on her spine which could have eventually severed
the spinal cord causing her to become quadriplegic.
After surgery and with the support of her husband,
family, friends and great doctors, Shana was able to
walk again on her own after 3 weeks. She continues
to have numbness on her left side. This incident
has taught her that "each day is truly a gift from
God and events happen in our lives for a purpose".
We wish Shana the best for a speedy recovery.

Chad Mixon of Vintage Style Calligraphy doesn’t just write vintage,
he lives for history and the nostalgia of the way things used to be
done. Chad’s art of the written word really started when he was a
young boy. He would sit with his Great Grandmother, who was born
in 1902, learning letterforms and how to grip his pen, finding joy in
the swoops and depth of writing each letter. Over the years, Chad
has spent over 500 hours studying the art of calligraphy, learning
to mimic the style of famous documents of the 1800’s such as the
Monroe Doctrine and the Declaration of Independence. His handwriting bears a striking resemblance to that of Thomas Jefferson.
Handwriting comes very naturally to Chad Mixon and he found that
people really enjoyed receiving letters and invitations using his
special style of writing. His calligraphy has many uses, especially
with weddings. Invitations, addressed envelopes, table place cards,
menus and more can have that “personal touch” when individually
hand written. Chad spends hours perfecting each word before writing each individual invitation.
theonebrideguide.com
“I write each name at least 5 times before committing to the final
piece,” says Chad. “This develops muscle memory so there are
no mistakes.” Chad usually completes a project, no matter how
big, in one sitting to maintain consistency. Posture, angle of paper
and the environment all can make a difference in the final quality
of the product.
•
October 2010 – January 2011
Why should a Bride consider using hand-written calligraphy when
there are so many font options? Because there is a richness to the
items Chad Mixon produces. Guests receiving the invitation can
tell that the piece was done by hand and this reflects a sentimentality you can never reproduce with digitally printed invitations.
Guests know the piece took time, effort and thought to complete,
which makes the guest feel special.
“I like to sit with the prospective client to see exactly what they are
looking for,” says Chad. “I can alter different letters and details to
suit each client. You can’t do that with digital fonts.”
{4}
Vintage Style Calligraphy goes beyond just invitations. Unique gifts
can be created using calligraphy. Poetry to your loved one is beautiful when reproduced by hand in 1800's style. A couple can have
their vows written and framed to hang in their home. The gifts
become history, treasured by generations.

Weddings and tradition go hand in hand, but for many
South Texas Brides, that tradition extends into the
richness and vibrancy of the Spanish culture. The
traditions hold great meaning and deep familial significance, and couples are able to express
their commitment to each other and to the roles
of husband and wife they are about to take on.
Marrying into a Spanish family myself, I was able
to embrace these traditions for

Padrinos & Madrinas
Spanish cultures have long been
regarded for their strong sense
of community and family. This
extends to helping with the details of a wedding. The role of the
Padrinos is to “sponsor” special
aspects of the wedding, often
financially, as a show of support
for the Bride and Groom. This is a
special way to involve more than
just your wedding party in the
wedding details, and the Padrinos
are often recognized for their gift
of the lasso, arras, bible, cake, DJ,
etc. in the program and often announced at the reception. Padrinos of the ceremonial gifts such
as the arras & lasso are usually
chosen with great intention,
often as a “godparent” role.
Most commonly, those chosen
are established couples whose
own time-tested marriage can
serve as an example for the
newlyweds.
Lasso/El Lazzo
As a symbol of unity, a large loop
of rosary beads or a lasso (cord)
is placed in a figure eight shape
around the necks of the couple
after they have exchanged their
vows. A special person or couple
places the lasso around the shoulders of the Bride and Groom,
Groom's shoulder's first. The couple wears the lasso throughout the
remainder of the service. This gift
is a symbol of the binding quality
of love as a couple equally shares
the responsibilities of marriage
for the rest of their lives. It is often given a deeper spiritual meaning as the couple invites Christ to
unify them through the trials of
marriage. At the end of the ceremony, the lasso is removed by
either the couple which placed
the lasso on the Bride and
Groom, or the priest. The
lasso is given to the
Bride as a memento
of her becoming
the mistress of
the Groom's heart
and home.

Favorite detail:
Bride: Worship in song in the ceremony,
the Africa Groom's cake & the fireworks
from the Hooks game when we were
leaving!!! (that's 3, he he).
Groom: Worship during the ceremony
was wonderful.
Favorite moment:
Bride & Groom: Exchanging of rings.
Biggest challenge:
Bride: Remembering that this day
is not about me, it's about Jesus.
Groom: So many details!
Funniest or most embarrassing
moment:
Bride: I tripped on my petticoat during
our grand entrance into the reception!
Groom: I forgot to mention one of my
groomsmen during the toasting at the
rehearsal dinner (little brother).
How to make your spouse happy:
Bride: I want to respect Bobby more
than any other person on this earth,
and encourage him and complement
him and serve him as long as we both
are living. When he proposed to me, he
washed my feet, symbolizing his desire
to serve me for the rest of our lives. I am
excited to do the same for him!
Groom: Love has everything to do with
service. I want to love Rachel well every
day and put her well-being above my
own. She should feel safe and secure
emotionally, physically, spiritually and
financially because we're married.
If you could do one thing over again
what would it be?
Bride: I would have found saplings for
wedding favors!
Groom: Nothing, I thought it was perfect.
What marriage means to you:
Bride & Groom: Marriage is a picture of
the Gospel. The husband is to love his wife
as Christ loves the church, willing to die for
her. The wife is to submit to her husband
as the church submits to Christ. We are
getting married because we love each
other, but more importantly, we want
to correctly demonstrate the Gospel.
Marriage is a covenant, not a contract.
Marriage is for happiness, but more importantly, it is for holiness. The longer we are
married, the more we will understand the
glorious covenant God has made with us,
and praise Him all the more for his faithfulness and steadfast love!
Advice for future Brides or Grooms:
Bride & Groom: Don't let people stress
you out about wedding planning… it's a
celebration, just get excited!
Any other information you'd like
other couples to know:
Bride & Groom: We want other couples
to know what marriage really is. It is a
beautiful covenant created by God,
not to be broken, but to be faithfully
nourished and cherished. We know that
a good marriage cannot last without
Jesus. We want Jesus to be the center
of our marriage, and we want Him to
be the center of yours too! Our desire
for you is that you would come to know
Jesus and His great love! Then as He
sanctifies both of you, your marriage
can emulate His love and faithfulness!

friends making a commitment to share
your love, dreams, hopes, happiness,

Advice for future Brides and Grooms:
Other information you’d like
other couples to know:
•
Bride: After we said our own vows to
each other, we both said vows to our
children and included them in our ceremony, including a sand ceremony. It
was awesome to see all of our colors of
sand come together. Groom: Seeing
my beautiful wife walk down the aisle,
looking like a million bucks.
Bride: During our dollar
dance, instead of my Best
Man/Maid of Honor collecting
the money, we decided to have
the money pinned on our attire
with pins. My little cousin walked up
to dance with me and stabbed the pin
through her dollar into my skin! Ouch!
Groom: Hard work and dedication
towards what means the most to me and that's her and the kids.
theonebrideguide.com
Bride: Our butterfly theme was rather
unique. My daughter was the "bubble
girl" rather than the flower girl and wore
wings to fit the theme. The Botanical
Gardens also had a butterfly garden.
Groom: I would have to say our colors,
our cakes and our choice of ceremonies.

October 2010 – January 2011
Mansion Royal is indeed the dream made reality
of Myrna and Ramiro Puga, owners of Myrna’s
Special Events. What originally
began as an event decorating service fifteen years
ago, has grown to
a major, all-inclusive event hosting
company at two
separate venues.
Crystal Reception
Hall, located at Airline and Holly, was the
first event venue opened
under Myrna’s impeccable
attention to style and detail.
Mansion Royal, which opened two
years ago, is the newest and largest
of the two. Located just off of South Padre
Island Drive, accessible via the Ennis
Joslin exit, the grand exterior façade
with luminous windows and a huge
sculpted water fountain is only a
taste of what lies within the appropriately named Mansion Royal.
Mansion Royal boasts a facility with three banquet rooms and
two ballrooms. The ballrooms can
be separated or joined depending on event size. These spaces
can host the most intimate party
or shower of 50 to an event for as
many as 1200 guests.
Each of the spaces showcases
the fine attention to detail
that truly speaks to Myrna’s
intention of creating a venue that makes special events
extraordinary. Each of the
ballroom and banquet rooms
are incredibly elegant even before the tables and décor arrive.
One of a kind hand-strung chandeliers grace the ceilings, doorways are framed by arches and pillars
and an ornately scrolled grand staircase is a favorite portrait spot for
Brides and Grooms. Myrna’s vision and designer taste reach
to every corner - even the bathrooms are designed with
exceptional class and ornate style!
Myrna and her creative team were the first
in Corpus Christi to boast a fully all-inclusive
reception venue, complete with custom in-house
décor, catering, cakes, table, chairs & furniture,
DJ services, and best of all, a dedicated event
coordinator to help bring the vision of your
special day to life! Ida Young, office manager
at Mansion Royal, explained that the coordinators dedicated to each client are what make both
Mansion Royal and Crystal Reception Hall so
unique. “There is nothing that can’t be done. We
create events that can offer the most basic table décor
and linens to the most over-the-top lighting, fabrics and
custom details from feathers to sparkling crystals and more!”
For every couple who books their wedding at Mansion Royal, they
get a taste of the royal treatment during their one on one food tasting
and design consultation. Based on the color scheme and tastes of each
couple, the team of decorators at Mansion Royal lavishly set up a
grouping of tables featuring a multitude of design options from
centerpiece arrangements to plates,
chargers, linens and
chairs. I was given a
chance to view the
King Banquet room
which was set up for
such a consultation.
It was a feast for the
{28}
eyes and an awe-inspiring experience. I marveled at the gorgeous
arrangements and original design pieces that would make any
event truly memorable. All in all, a Bride at Mansion Royal can rest
assured, not only will her wedding guests enjoy the elegant and
spacious accommodations, but the room will be absolutely radiant
with the most personal attention to detail that will enhance the
wedding day experience.
Perhaps the truest testament to how Brides feel about their
experience at Mansion Royal is that they return again and again!
Ida explained that many of their former Brides have been returning
to host baby showers, and family members & friends of the Brides
have booked additional events due to their positive first-hand experience at Mansion Royal.
Mansion Royal is located at 8001 South Padre Island Dr.,
Corpus Christi, TX 78412. Call (361) 985-9955 or visit their web
site for more information: www.mansionroyal.com.

As for entertainment, Mansion Royal offers options that take
the headache out of searching on your own for the right DJ to keep
the party going. They sub-contract to a collective mix of trusted DJ’s
and even live local bands. Brides always have the option of booking
other wedding vendors on their own for their Mansion Royal
wedding, but most Brides prefer the ease with which they can
Myrna’s vision for what Mansion Royal can be is far from complete.
Future plans to add an outdoor courtyard and gardens are well underway.
Eventually the Mansion will offer the “Enchanting Garden” as a beautifully manicured outdoor space ideal for weddings and special events.
theonebrideguide.com
Beyond the style detail, the in-house catering services offer
custom menu options that are tantalizing to say the least. There is
nothing that can’t be done, and couples can feel confident that their
guests will rave about the amazing food and appreciate the finelytuned catering staff that goes above and beyond high-end service no
matter what the event!
count on Mansion Royal to take the stress out of coordinating to
deliver a seamless wedding experience.

Key items for every room in your home
Note from The One:
Registering for wedding gifts is a
necessary evil in wedding planning,
but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare.
Keep a good attitude, be patient,
and make sure to pick items you can
live with for a long while. And guys,
don’t ask WHY you need four different types of spoons. You never
know when a spoon shortage is going
to happen! But seriously, registering is a good thing. Your friends and
family are provided with a list of gift
items you actually want, instead of
playing the guessing game about what
in the world you might need for your
new kitchen. Register for more than
you think you’ll need and make sure
you have lots of affordable items for
all ranges of income levels. Keep this
list handy while you are shopping and
don’t get overwhelmed. Remember,
you can always return things if you
change your mind!

an intense cardio and strength workout three times per week. After
those workouts our conversations
changed from just the normal day
to day exchange of information
to deeper more important topics
about ourselves and our relationship. It didn’t happen every time but
I do remember several memorable
conversations. It could have been the
endorphins from the workout or that we
felt connected from accomplishing a difficult task together. Whatever it was, it brought
us closer together.
Fit Bride
By Adam Farrell M.S., CSCS
Fit Bride, Fit Couple
I
remember before my wife and I were married
we used to workout together on a regular basis (we still workout together, but not as often).
We would meet at the gym before work and do
Below are a few tips/ideas on either starting a
workout program with your fiancé or how to invite him to join you for a workout:
1. Try a few fitness classes or fitness boot
camps that work with both of your schedules. A lot of programs will offer free trials.
Pick the class that fits both your goals, schedules
and intensity levels. Make sure that the program
you pick works with all of the three categories.
2. If your fiancé already works out, ask if
you can join him during his next workout.
If he gets weirded-out by the idea of you
joining him, suggest that you both try a class
together on the days he doesn’t workout. Try a
class that will compliment his current workout
and your fitness goals.
3. If you do join him for a workout, you don’t
have to do everything he does. You can do a
part of his workout and then do your own thing.
Don’t use the time during the workout to catch
up with each other.
4. Hire a personal trainer. Hire a trainer that
works with pairs or small groups. Let the trainer
know you want a written copy of three workouts with an explanation of each exercise so
you and your fiancé can rotate through the three
workouts together on your own.
5. Train for a Race. Pick an upcoming 5K or
beginners Triathlon and begin training together.
Plan out the days and times you will run together
and hold each other accountable. Hire a coach
if you have no idea where to start.
6. Join a sports league or take up an active
hobby together. Sports leagues are great
for bonding and can burn off a few calories.
Beware of the beer leagues! As for hobbies, a
two-person kayak is a great way to spend time
together on our beautiful bay and get a killer
upper body workout.
I hope a few of these ideas have spurred some
interest to broach the topic of spending quality
time with each other while being active.

Pinnacle Fitness Boot Camps for FREE,

For Grooms,
one of the
few responsibilities
that falls on your
shoulders during
wedding planning is
finding and booking
the getaway vehicle.
Do you really want
to leave the festivities of your big day,
cramming your
new wife's beautiful gown into your

old clunker? These
days, the options
are endless to escape to your wedding night suite in style! From
stretch limos to vintage classics, choose a vehicle that suits your
style. Or be unique with a Harley or sailboat as your choice of
transportation! You can bring all your friends along from the
wedding to the reception and out for late-night afterwards
with a party bus! Whatever you choose, make sure you get
some good photos to commemorate the priceless experience.
