Albright Care Services
is a non-profit organization affiliated in faith with The United Methodist
Church through the Susquehanna Conference. Our mission is to care
for the senior population in the Pennsylvania communities in which
we operate facilities. In particular, we strive to meet the housing and
healthcare needs of the aging in ways that help seniors age gracefully
and with dignity.
Albright operates two independent senior living communities with a
full continuum of care—RiverWoods in Lewisburg and Normandie
Ridge in York. Albright operates LIFE (Living Independently for Elders)
programs that provide health, social and spiritual day care in three
communities—Lancaster, Lebanon and Williamsport. Albright also
manages Warrior Run Manor in Watsontown, a housing complex for
the disabled and elderly.
RiverWoods is also home to the Slifer House Museum. Slifer House was
the original home for the aged of the Evangelical Association and was in
operation for nearly 60 years. Slifer House then opened to the public as a
museum in 1976 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Albright Care Services provides housing and healthcare services for
more than 1,200 seniors in eight counties. As a non-profit organization,
Albright is committed to meeting the continually changing needs of the
communities we serve and is grateful for the ongoing financial support
of family, friends and neighbors within those communities.

Thank
You
from our president
Shaun T. Smith
Dear Friends,
Our annual report offers me an opportunity to thank you for your generosity and
service to Albright Care Services. The past year has been one of great accomplishment
in areas of service to our residents and participants, and leadership from staff, board
and volunteers. We are grateful to all who have given in support of our mission, and
partnered with us to best meet needs in our community. I continue to feel blessed and
grateful to work with such an amazing group!
As you read through the pages of our report, imagine each accomplishment like a drop
of water in a great ocean. Each drop creates a ripple with impact. Some ripples find
their way to shore and come to a peaceful end, while others create a tidal wave. As we
begin some very exciting capital and service projects this year, I challenge everyone to
do work that creates impact! Be courageous in offering ideas and finding solutions. Be
the leader, take a stand and help Albright continue to make waves.
We are the leader in senior care services in the Susquehanna Valley. Next year, 2016, Albright Care Services will
celebrate 100 years of service in the community. It will be an exciting year as we reflect on our past and dream of our
future. And we look forward to doing this with you—our family, friends and neighbors.
Thank you for your perseverance!
Sincerely,
the united methodist church

lbright Care Services is excited to announce a new logo to usher in the next 100 years of
service to the community. The logo design was inspired by our upcoming anniversary
celebration yet rooted in our Evangelical heritage and ongoing relationship with the
Susquehanna Conference of The United Methodist Church. The logo is a shining example of the Albright
we imagine as we forge a model for the next 100 years of service. The coming years will be filled with
people who make a difference, just as the last hundred had many heroes. Let’s talk about one of them.
In December of 2013, we said goodbye to our good friend,
Dr. Eugene Adams, a RiverWoods resident. He was preceded
in death by his beloved wife, Lena, and spirited daughter
Sonia. Dr. Adams was an industrious man, and a thoughtful
provider and caregiver for both Lena and Sonia. Upon Dr.
Adams death, RiverWoods learned of a most generous bequest
in support of capital advancement for residential and nursing
purposes. “Dr. Adams’ bequest is an amazing gift,” said Fran
Ashby, vice president of fund development. “It is evidence of a
generous heart and a sincere interest in the welfare of others.”
His gift speaks to a lifetime of careful planning and a desire
to make a positive and perpetual difference for current and
future RiverWoods residents. Dr. Adams gift is restricted for
capital improvements. And just like his disciplined approach,
Albright will be conscientious in its spending to respect the
Adams Family’s wishes for growth and stability at RiverWoods.
Albright Care Services gratefully acknowledges all bequests
in support of benevolence, general operating and capital
improvements.
Dr. Adams’ legacy will be seen and felt in the many ways in which his gift helps Albright
fulfill its important mission of serving others. What will your legacy be?

Spriggle Fund Sees Growth
Albright is pleased to report healthy returns for The
Spriggle Fund for the Endowment of Benevolent Care.
In 2014 we saw an annual 12 month return of 14.35%,
and the year end balance on December 31, 2014, was
$1,365,437. We continue to enjoy the expert advisement of
the United Methodist Stewardship Foundation. The annual
distribution supports the daily expenses of providing
benevolent care on the residential campuses as well as care
for participants at the LIFE Centers. Albright’s goal is to
continue to raise annual benevolent funds, as well as funds
for the endowment. Donations to the Spriggle Fund can be
made at any time through the Fund Development Office.
$430,758 in Benevolent Care
delivered to Residents of Normandie Ridge &
RiverWoods, and Participants of Albright LIFE
Lancaster, Lebanon and Williamsport.
“I worked hard. I planned well. I just never
imagined I would outlive my savings.”
Imagine the anxiety you would feel if you were truly faced
with running out of money. You’re aging and the money is
depleting. Where will you live next month? How will you
pay for your next medication refill? Will you have to choose
between groceries and medicine? What if you need therapy
services? This is a real situation for the person quoted above.
It’s a real situation for members of our Albright family.
Sometimes careful planning isn’t enough to spare someone
from financial hardship. Many circumstances contribute
to one’s inability to pay for housing, food and medicine—
just the basics. Thankfully, we have members of our
Albright family who choose to make a difference for others.
Thankfully, we have YOU!
Because you have given so generously to the Benevolent
Fund during 2014, Albright was able to continue providing
benevolent care for residents and participants in need, helping
fulfill the mission of caring for the elderly and financially
burdened. During 2014, Albright provided $361,987 in
benevolent care to residents of Normandie Ridge and
RiverWoods.

A Community Partnership
Planning for the future is an important piece of every
facet of Albright. And, as employees are our greatest asset,
all are encouraged to pursue training and educational
opportunities to support daily work with residents and
participants. During 2013, we partnered with First
Community Foundation Partnership (FCFP) to create an
endowed fund in support of staff education at Albright
Care Services. Albright’s education fund had previously
been held in house, primarily supporting clinical training.
When we wanted to extend the reach and legacy of the
program, we partnered with FCFP. The partnership builds
on both organizations’ strengths, encouraging us to work
together to sustain healthy and productive communities.
Albright established the organizational endowment as a
permanent funding source. The fund’s investment income
will be granted back to Albright to support individual
education and group training. Albright’s goal is to support
continuing education in a variety of clinical and nonclinical areas for the ultimate benefit of residents and
participants. Cindy Wolfe, pictured above, a longtime
employee, has experienced firsthand the benefits of the
education fund—supporting her desire for continuing
education and advancement at Albright. “Albright has
helped me reach both my personal and professional
development goals. Broadening the opportunities for staff
can only be seen as a positive for both the employee and
our residents and participants”, said Cindy. Donations
to the education fund can be made at any time through
Albright’s Fund Development office, as well as the
Foundation office.

A Message
from our Board Chair, Keith S. Kuzio
L
ooking at the past year from my perspective as Board Chair, I see Albright Care Services
continuing to richly embrace its mission. Now on the doorstep to our second century of service,
we look to the future with great anticipation.
I am proud to lead a Board of Trustees that is compassionate, engaged and keenly aware of the
continually changing environment in senior services and healthcare. In planning and responding to
change, members of the Board and staff are the first wave of resources devoted to finding new and
innovative ways to meet the needs of residents, participants and their families.
As we have all experienced, change does not always come easy. If not predicted, it can act like a tidal wave crushing us. But if we
proactively assume the right stance, that wave of change can provide positive momentum and propel us forward. I feel Albright
is taking advantage of the energy found in these changing times. It is demonstrated in our desire to engage residents, participants
and staff, receive and act on constructive feedback, and plan and construct the facilities and programs that will continue to
advance our mission and the delivery of high quality services well into the next century.
This Community Report highlights many contributions from our family, friends and neighbors. Every act of kindness listed has
created a positive ripple that is effecting every facet of our great organization. Thank you!

Master Planning Continues
The Master Planning process identified a number of
strategic priorities for Albright— four in the area of
capital improvement.
A ribbon cutting ceremony held on Feb. 12, 2015,
marked the opening of new dining, nursing and
rehabilitation space within the Skilled Nursing Center
at Normandie Ridge. The renovated space includes
a dining room with a country kitchen, conference
room and fireplace lounge with recreation space. The
homelike design better meets the needs of both long
and short term residents and is complementary of the
exceptional level of skilled care provided at Normandie
Ridge. Alcove Apartments were also completed at
Normandie Ridge providing an additional affordable
housing opportunity for independent residents.
The remaining two projects, currently underway, will
require our patience and fortitude as we move a lot of
dirt to make way for new housing and services!
The Memory Care Residence at Normandie Ridge kicked
off with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 13, 2015.
The Memory Care Residence will house 18 beds in a restful
‘small home’ environment with full programming for the
treatment and support of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
A groundbreaking on May 7, 2015, marked the first stages of the
Center for Wellness and Transitional Care at RiverWoods.
A 32-bed center will support rehabilitation needs with the goal of
returning short term residents to their permanent homes, both
on and off campus, as soon as safely possible.
Benevolent Care, continued from page 7
Albright also provided $68,771 for participants in the LIFE
program. Benevolent care remains our greatest need.
We could not do this important work without your help.
On behalf of the residents and participants who receive
benevolent care, especially for those who cannot thank you
directly, we say THANK YOU for your generous gifts.
YOU make all the difference!

Everyday
Employee Campaign
L
ast year, we launched our our Everyday Heroes
Employee Campaign. As employees, when we give
back, it shows that we believe in the mission and vision
of Albright—to care for our senior population and
provide for our neighbors just like we would our own
families. When we show that we care enough to give
out of our own pockets, over and above our paycheck,
it speaks volumes to participants, their families and all
of the external people that we are asking for financial
support. We make a difference!
We had two goals: awareness followed by increased
enrollment in payroll deduction. Our initial goal was
to create an awareness campaign to show the variety of
areas supported by contributions and to create ‘events’
to encourage participation. Lunch, dinner and Snack
Attack events began to occur with $.25 - $2.00 in net
proceeds from each sale coming back as contributions.
Employee champions chose between Benevolent
Fund and Resident/Participant Enrichment for their
proceeds. By the end of 2014, we had 30% participation
and more than $2,700 collected from the Snack Attack
events alone!
During open enrollment, we shared our success stories
and invited staff to consider payroll deduction—our
secondary goal. We wanted staff to know that for as
little as $1.00 per pay period, they can make a real
difference —and when we all join together—there is
no limit to what we can achieve! We were delighted to
welcome new pledges from all of the sites to a variety of
service areas including benevolence and enrichment.
We are so proud of our Albright employees,
thank you for making a difference!

More Than 100 Years
of Volunteer Service
T
he Auxiliaries at Normandie Ridge and RiverWoods
are dedicated to improving the quality of life for all
residents—and they do a fabulous job! Each Auxiliary
contributes thousands of dollars each year in support of
benevolent programs, recreation and therapy equipment,
and innovative programming.
The Auxiliaries draw their members from the
communities in which they are located, in addition
to campus residents and staff. They remain a vital
connection to the many churches that support the
ministry of Albright Care Services. In addition to
yearly dues and contributions given by members,
each Auxiliary works hard to raise funds.
The RiverWoods Auxiliary began in 1915, having
been founded at Central Oak Heights as plans were
made to open the Evangelical Home and Orphanage
in Lewisburg. Their current main source of income is
from sales in the gift shops on campus. The original gift
shop was established in 1971. When RidgeCrest Court
opened in 2003, space was included to display gift shop
items for sale, increasing the visibility and income for
the Auxiliary. Beautifully hand crafted items from the
RiverWoods Woodshop are sold at both locations. Since
1970, the RiverWoods Auxiliary has contributed more
than $500,000 for the benefit of the residents. Currently
there are nearly 200 members.
The Normandie Ridge Auxiliary was founded in 1993
coinciding with the opening of Normandie Ridge.
The Auxiliary organizes the annual Anniversary
Celebration, held the second Saturday in October.
A major fundraising event, it is supported by members
of area churches as well as Normandie Ridge staff.
Since its inception, the Normandie Ridge Auxiliary has
contributed more than $120,000 for the benefit of the
residents. Currently there are over 450 members.
Thank you to both auxiliaries for your service!

benevolent care at Normandie Ridge,
RiverWoods and Albright LIFE. And
just why would people put themselves
in the position of asking others to give
money to Albright? Over the years we
have asked some of the golfers that
very question and here is a sampling
of their responses, with the year they
began golfing and the cumulative
total they have raised:
Pastor Bill Gibson
Retired UM Pastor
“I became involved
because I believe we
are placed here on
earth for a purpose
and part of that
purpose is to devote our time and
effort to help others in need. Being
involved in the Golf Challenge is a
rewarding way to accomplish that
goal.” (2007) $8,473.50
the united methodist church
Derek Mitchley
RiverWoods Staff
“I’ve been working
at RiverWoods for
5 years and every
resident I’ve come to
know, whether it be
in the nursing care center, personal
care or independent living, I consider
a friend and nearly like family. I want
to be able to raise as much money
as I can so that I can help as many
residents as possible. That’s what
you do for friends and family. You do
what you can to help them when they
are in need.” (2011) $5,476.50
Bob Kuhn
Normandie Ridge
Resident
“Donating to a golfer
is the best way to
be involved. The
proceeds are raised
for such a good cause, the Benevolent
Fund, so it’s important to be involved
in that way. To new golfers: You will
enjoy the day. Don’t worry about the
golf; we don’t keep score anyway!”
(2002; 2007) $12,596.26
Steve Foust
Former Chair of the
Albright Foundation
“I have been
associated with
Albright for
many, many years.
I believe in the
need for quality faith-based long
term care and Albright provides that
exceptionally well.
I have played in the Golf Challenge
every year since its inception and
I’m proud of how successful it has
become!” (1999) $79,866.33
Rev. Doug Eberly
Former Trustee and
Current Development
Committee Member
“I participate because
I want to make
a difference and
help those who can no longer help
themselves. Ask, ask, ask. I just ask
everyone I can think of and send letters
to everyone on my Christmas card list.
I tell them how much I am giving and
challenge them to match that amount.
That becomes the bar for the donors.
Every gift counts, no matter how large
or small—that is the way to make the
biggest difference.” (2001) $60,393.90
Carl Schlappi
Community Member
“It’s a worthy cause,
a great spring outing
and a very fun way
to play golf—but it’s
also a chance to be
with friends and loved ones who enjoy
helping others.” (1999) $9,210.61
Lilian Quay
RiverWoods Staff
“I just ask everyone
I know to sponsor
me. I ask my friends,
my coworkers, my
pastor, neighbors,
acquaintances, everyone I can!
I like the idea of raising money for
benevolent care because I have known
residents who have needed that
money. It helps me to know that I am
bringing a smile to the faces of those
that need it most. I also have a Godgiven energy and I use it to golf and
help raise money and volunteer. It’s
important to remember that none of
us can do it by ourselves. It takes all of
us as fundraisers to make a difference.”
(2003) $34,767.38

Volunteers are an incredible asset
to Albright Care Services
Volunteers provide valuable services to residents, participants and families—and do so with
compassion, spirit and enthusiasm! They also connect us with the greater communities in
which we live and work.
We are grateful for the many
volunteers who donate their
“Volunteers are not paid—not because they
time and talent to promote our
are worthless, but because they are priceless.” mission throughout the year.
-Unknown
Our hundreds of volunteers
range in age from elementary
school students to senior citizens and have a variety of responsibilities including assisting
residents in the nursing care centers, completing crafts with LIFE participants, working at
special events, greeting visitors and completing tours for many areas of campus. In addition,
Meals on Wheels reaches our elderly and off-campus neighbors in Lewisburg and Milton.
And Slifer House Museum offers opportunities for history and architecture buffs to share
their knowledge and passion for the past. Volunteers do all of the following, and more:
• Pack and deliver meals for Meals on Wheels Lewisburg/Milton
• Provide dog therapy services
• Lead activities including crafts, games and exercise
• Serve meals for residents and participants
• Assist with administrative and clerical work
• Help with gardening
• Play instruments or sing for residents and at special events
• Run video cameras during activities and worship services
• Host during special events
• Provide guided tours at Slifer House Museum
• Complete archival duties at Slifer House Museum
• Devote time to woodworking activities
• Join the Auxiliaries to raise money for Albright’s benevolent programs
Our volunteers have big hearts! If you have an interest in volunteering, please contact us
at AlbrightCare.org or call (570) 522-3880.

Fighting Hunger...
One Meal at a Time
O
ver 8 million meals are served annually to seniors in
Pennsylvania struggling with hunger and poverty. Many
of those seniors are also isolated, frail and underserved. Meals
on Wheels makes a difference for these seniors.
Meals on Wheels Lewisburg/Milton, a member of the Meals
on Wheels America Association, delivers more than 17,000
nutritious meals every year to folks in Lewisburg, Milton, West
Milton and Montandon. A warm smile is part of the package!
Meals on Wheels Lewisburg/ Milton operates from the
RiverWoods Campus and enjoys additional support from the
Albright Care Services Team. A group of 50 dedicated volunteers fill the tasks of packing, driving and delivering meals.
Volunteers generously give their time, mileage and gas. Thank you!
Meals on Wheels relies on the generosity of the community to fund its services. Donations cover the cost of food and
supplies. In addition, donations help to subsidize the meals of recipients whose incomes are below the poverty line.
In 2014, Meals on Wheels Lewisburg/Milton received 233 gifts from 144 individuals and 35 businesses, clubs and
church organizations. The total raised was $37,441.
Do you know someone who could benefit from our services? Whether short or long term, Meals on Wheels Lewisburg/
Milton can provide the answer for a family member, neighbor, church member or friend. Help us fight hunger and
isolation. Call us today—we can help! 570-522-1934.

What is a House Museum?
S
lifer House Museum represents our earliest traditions of
senior care at RiverWoods, having housed our very first
residents in 1916. But before its role as part of the Evangelical
Home, it was a private residence, commissioned in 1860 by Eli
Slifer, former Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pa. In 1976, the
house was converted back to its original purpose to serve as a
house museum: a historic house that has been transformed into
a museum. The house is furnished and decorated with antiques,
reflecting the social and material culture of the Victorian era and
Civil War. The majority of the museum’s collection of artifacts
was donated by the generosity of the public, including objects that
once belonged to the Slifer and Ross families. In 1978, the house
was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and proudly
displays a plaque with this honor on its exterior. The museum
provides an enriching experience for the greater community and
offers guided tours, summer concerts, and historical presentations
and exhibitions throughout the year. In 2014, we were especially
proud to support the 37th annual Abraham Lincoln presentations
and a Civil War Ball to commemorate the war’s sesquicentennial.
These activities—designed to share local, state and national
history and culture—allow residents and the greater community
to experience the past in an interactive and engaging way.
Above: Volunteers and Interns at Slifer House.
By preserving the house and its culture, supporting its collection and history and creating engaging opportunities for our
residents, the museum helps to fulfill Albright’s progressive mission of providing abundant living for all residents, staff and
volunteers. It is the cornerstone of the RiverWoods campus!
Slifer House Museum relies on generous contributions to fund its important programs and services. We are grateful to the
many volunteers and our 129 donors who contributed $25,189 to the museum in 2014. Thank you!
The museum is open 1-4 p.m. with guided tours at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, mid-April through
mid-December or by appointment. Come visit the only Victorian era house museum in the Susquehanna Valley!
