Message From Your President
PRESIDENT
Nancy Lingle
I can't believe January is gone and we're already into February. Time is
really flying. Welcome to our newest member Elizabeth (Beth) Rhoades
with C & R Remodeling.
Capitol City Door
The Salem Chapter has so much coming up soon. Kay will be
sending out the scholarship information soon to colleges. Coast Retreat is
coming up at the end of February at the Adobe Resort in Yachats and we've
already had at least 4 sign up to attend. Way to go ladies. WIC Week and
our membership luncheon will be held at the Red Lion this year, thank you
Dawn for working so hard putting this together. We're back to the beach on
April 8th for the Salem Contractors Exchange banquet. Please be thinking
about donating something for the raffle. We'll need a few members to help
sell raffle tickets. This is a great fundraiser for our scholarship fund.
Susan Wood
Construction Career Day on quickly approaching in May 10th.
Susan and her committee have been working hard planning this amazing
event. The flyer is being updated and will be going out soon. Please be
thinking of companies who might be interested in being an exhibitor or who
might be willing to make a donation. I hope all of you will be able to
volunteer that day, even for part of the day to help with the students,
passing out food and helping with anything the exhibitors may need. We're
going to be at the Oregon State Fairgrounds so we'll be out of any potential
rain and wind.
NAWIC Appreciation Night is also in May and the committee will be
meeting soon to start planning. This is a really great way to thank our
bosses for all their support of NAWIC throughout the year.

Elizabeth Rhoades
Elizabeth Rhoades is the President of C&R Design/
Remodel, following in the footsteps of her father and
grandfather. As third generation C&R, Beth learned remodeling from the ground up when she began working
part time and summers during high school. However, after earning a college degree in Hospitality Management,
Beth opted to accept a position managing a high-end Spa
Resort in Napa, California. Eventually, Beth returned to
Salem in 2007 and started working once again for the
business she loves.
Humor in Construction
Beth worked her way up through the ranks while learning remodeling processes, production coordination,
scheduling, sales, estimating, and marketing. She now
oversees and manages all aspects of C&R operations.
In addition, Beth is chief estimator and planner for C&R
projects.
Although working in the construction industry is not every woman’s dream, Beth recognizes that “remodeling is
obviously in my blood. I had thought I wanted to go in a
different direction, but in the end I knew this was what I
was meant to do.”

Food For Thought
Valentine’s Day Greetings
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of
whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third
century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those
with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the
injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in
secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape
harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an
imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young
girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.
Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a
sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this
reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.
In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around
the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes
to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way
for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s
Day greetings.
Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther
A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the
“Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures
known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of
the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase
approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

Recent studies are showing that
there are four common genderbiased patterns of behavior
found at work sites where men
and women are working
together. We will discuss these
four common patterns and what
