You enter the upper part of the village through the belfry tower and continue along narrow streets lined with delightful shops, each more welcoming than the next. It is hard to resist the charm of the turret houses and corbelled walls as you head towards the Esplanade de Barrouze, where you get a spectacular view over the Maronne and Aspre valleys. Salers is the pride and joy of the Cantal department and lends its name to the most iconic breed of cattle roaming the surrounding hills. Salers cattle are known for their brown colour, tender meat and unique-tasting cheese. Festivities: 1st weekend of May. Salers hosts the “Sites Remarquables du Goût” food festival. Tourist Office - +33 (0)4.71.40.58.08 Aurillac Aurillac, the capital town of the Cantal department, has much to offer in the way of tourism, particularly within the historic town, which has been beautifully preserved. Lying on the banks of the Jordanne river, Aurillac is full of small colourful quarters and welcoming terraces. If you are keen on local Auvergne produce (cheese, cured meats, bread & pastries and fine cutlery), you won’t be disappointed. You should also be sure to check out the weekly market: every Saturday morning at the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. What to see: Muséum des Volcans: within Château de SaintEtienne. Permanent exhibition on the volcanoes of the Massif Central. Open year round (closed Mondays). Tel: +33 (0)4.71.48.07.00 Festivities: International Street Theatre Festival: 3rd week of August. Les Européennes du goût: 1st weekend of July. Entertainment and a chance to taste local produce. Aurillac Tourist Office: +33 (0)4.71.48.46.58 Chaudes-Aigues Chaudes Aigues, a translation from old French meaning literally «hot waters», takes its name from the raging fires blazing in the belly of the Earth. It boasts no less than 32 natural springs, including the renowned source of the river Par, which can reach 82° and is said to be the hottest in Europe! Boiling water is a common feature here: it cooks the eggs, fills the troughs in the local wash-house, flows from the fountains, heats the houses, intrigues visitors, and nurtures body & soul. It attracts visitors with the same magnetism as the castle keep, the chapel’s ornate lancet arch and the statues nestling in small recesses. This Cantal resort continues to be renowned for its thermal spas and cures. What to see: Geothermia: Everything you ever wanted to know about geothermal energy in the air around us and in the deep ocean (sources, use and natural manifestations of the Earth’s heat). Tel: +33 (0)4.71.23.58.76 Chaudes-Aigues Tourist Office: +33 (0)4.71.23.52.75 Les Gorges de la Truyère These gorges, which were carved out by the river Truyère as it made its way south, make for a breathtaking and wild landscape, much appreciated by «laid-back» motorcyclists looking for a relaxing and refreshing stop-off site in a region that continues to be dominated by Mother Nature. Sports enthusiasts won’t be disappointed either, with a choice of hiking, climbing, mountain biking and microlighting. But one thing that is sure to satisfy all comers is the local gastronomy, including the famous “Encalat” tart, made with sweet cottage cheese, and the “Piccousel”, a L sweet & savoury cake made with herbs and prunes. In short, life is good here! Viaduc de Garabit Located on the road that winds its way along the banks of the river Truyère, the Garabit viaduct is an impressive vantage point. This veritable work of art, a steel masterpiece constructed by Gustave Eiffel from 1881 to 1884, crosses the Truyère at a height of 122 m, linking the two valleys. The viaduct has been anchored in French history since Eiffel’s time: it saw the troops heading for the front in 1914 and was very nearly destroyed in 1944. Its famous red hues are beautifully lit up at night, offering a unique spectacle!
