Dear Friends,
One of the best things about our work here at Mother Earth
News is sharing time with our passionate and engaged community.
Your energy and imagination lead us on one adventure after
another. We’re thrilled to have you join us at the Mother Earth
News Fairs!
This weekend promises to be inspiring, stimulating and fun. People
all over the world are looking for solutions to the sustainability
puzzle these days and the participants in our Mother Earth News
Fairs are the sorts of people who help, in myriad ways, to make our
existence on this miraculous planet not only ecologically sound but
prosperous and enjoyable.
I would like to extend my personal thanks to the many supportive
organizations that have invested their time and effort into joining us at this event, and the many
innovative exhibitors who have chosen to participate. Major sponsors this year include Agrilicious.org,
Botanical Interests, Envirolet, Mountain Rose Herbs, Nature’s Flavors, Premier1, Purina Animal Nutrition
and Yanmar. We are particularly grateful to the extraordinary individuals who have agreed to join us
as speakers, including headliners Bob Moore, Hendrikus Schraven, Sherri Brooks Vinton, Joel Salatin
and Stephanie Tourles. They represent some of the most influential and visionary minds in the realm of
sustainability and conscientious lifestyles, and we are honored by their commitment.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy your weekend here with us in Washington and can come to our other
Mother Earth News Fairs around the country.

Agriculture, Horticulture, Permaculture:
How a society based on gardens rather
than farms offers a sustainable future
Toby Hemenway – Center for
Pattern Literacy
Modern agriculture, industry and finance
all extract more than they give back, and
the Earth is starting to show the strain. The
ecological design approach known as
permaculture offers powerful tools for the
design of regenerative, fair ways to provide food, energy,
livelihood, and other needs while letting humans share the planet
with the rest of nature. This presentation provides insight into why
our culture has become fundamentally unsustainable, and offers
ecologically based solutions that can help create a just and
sustainable society. Workshop Level: Intermediate

Heretics Unite
Joel Salatin – Polyface Farms
Mother Earth News Fair visitors are
part of an integrity living tsunami that
threatens Wall Street and governmental
orthodoxy. That’s a good thing. Modern
American orthodoxy assumes that the
Dow Jones Industrial Average is far more
important than dancing earthworms. That
exports are more valuable than functional
aquifers. That food convenience is far more important than food
knowledge. That health comes from drugs and personal
satisfaction comes from Hollywood entertainment. Heretics
question all of these axiomatic untruths. This hard-hitting but
humorous performance by farmer, author and entertainer Joel
Salatin identifies these outrageous orthodoxies, explains the heresy
antidote, and calls for all of us to chart a different path for
integrity living. Workshop Level: Intermediate

The No-Mortgage Natural Cottage
Chris McClellan – Natural Cottage Project
Before the Industrial Revolution our ancestors
generally lived in small houses they built for
themselves from local earth, stone, straw and
wood, mainly because the materials were cheap
or free and didn’t require a great deal of
specialized skill. Today’s houses might be bigger
and more comfortable, but they’re also often
toxic and expensive. For all sorts of good
reasons, basic DIY shelter is making a
comeback. With a little guidance, almost
anyone can still build their own home with
low-cost natural and scrounged materials for
under $10,000 and opt out of the industrial
building and mortgage rat race. Workshop

MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR 27
For Purina Nutritionist Dr. Mikelle Roeder, a healthy chicken is just as important as a delicious
egg. That’s why she makes sure Purina feed gives your chicks what they need to grow into
healthy birds. And as they start laying eggs, Purina provides all the nutrients needed for
strong shells and rich golden yolks. So when it comes to choosing between the chicken and
the egg, choose both with Purina.
Start your flock off right at MyPurinaFlock.com.
