Untitled - United Way of Long Island
Message from The Chairman of the Board and President & CEO As United Way of Long Island completes its 45th year of serving the local community, we are able to look back on our many successes that have allowed us to reach more people in need. Last year, thanks to you—our donors, volunteers and partners— United Way distributed $9.1 million in grants in support of our 113 agency partners and United Way’s community impact initiatives. Collectively, these agencies impact nearly 2 million lives each year. We have worked diligently to refocus United Way’s efforts in the core areas of Education, Income and Health. Through United Way of Long Island, your contributions support the building blocks of better lives and stronger communities: a quality education that leads to a stable job; enough income to support a family through retirement; and good health. Locally, this means that nearly 1400 families didn’t have to choose between heating their homes and putting food on their tables; thousands of Long Island families saved more than $150,000 in prescription costs; and many young adults earned their GEDs and learned hands-on green-building techniques that will allow them to thrive in high-growth, high-demand green careers. We encourage you to take a closer look at the Year in Review in this report to learn more. Robert A. Wild Chairman of the Board Throughout 2010, we look forward to building upon our Income platform to actively put Long Islanders back to work, and help our youth succeed in school and education. We are excited to implement and develop plans for a $3 million grant from the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal to complete weatherization modifications to special needs and affordable housing projects in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Not only will this help to create a sustainable future workforce, but it will help our nonprofit agency partners reduce their operating costs associated with special needs residences. This year will also bring innovative education initiatives to challenged communities in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Through the generous support of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, United Way of Long Island will be expanding the Community Schools Project, which offers unique services designed to improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged students. Currently serving middle school students from the Westbury School District, plans are underway to replicate the project in Brentwood, Bay Shore and Central Islip. We are proud of our success, but we could not do it without your dedication and commitment to our mission of advancing the common good on Long Island. We look forward to our continued partnerships with investors in the community—businesses, labor unions, government, community leaders, nonprofits and donors like you. Together, we can create a brighter, more promising future for our region and continue to develop programs that address Long Islanders’ critical needs in education, income and health. Theresa A. Regnante President & CEO Robert A. Wild Chairman of the Board Theresa A. Regnante President & CEO 2 INCOME An estimated 165,000 Long Islanders live below the federal poverty level. Together, United Way and its community partners are working to respond to people in crisis, create opportunity for individuals and families to access and maintain housing, and ensure financial stability that leads to longterm success. • In 2008-09, United Way’s Project Warmth Emergency Fuel Fund distributed $604,392 in grants, to 1,398 families— including 1,929 children. Since 1995, 18,118 families have been assisted through more than $5.4 million in emergency aid. • United Way of Long Island administers the federallyfunded Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which provides emergency assistance for food, utilities and shelter to individuals and families. Last year, 24 local nonprofit community partner organizations helped distribute more than $1.68 million in emergency aid to Long Islanders in need. 4 Health More than 250,000 Long Islanders are either medically underserved or do not have health insurance. This leads to a burden on families, health care facilities and communities as chronic illness and dependence on emergency care increase. United Way and its community partners work to help people gain access to quality health services and identify and manage chronic illness. 5 • United Way of Long Island’s HIV/AIDS Grant Management (Ryan White Funding) Division, is the lead agency that administers federal funds for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act, Parts A & B, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA). In 2009, Long Island was awarded $6.5 million for Ryan White Part A programs. • United Way of Long Island administers the FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Program, which realizes significant savings for families with prescription assistance needs. Through the FamilyWize program, families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties saved $163,768.67 on prescriptions through November 2009—an average savings of 35%. Education Each year, nearly 10,000 Long Island students do not graduate from high school. Many of Long Island’s children and youth face challenges such as being from low-income families, living in foster care or facing homelessness—all of which can contribute to a lack of family stability and an unsuccessful educational experience. Together, United Way and its community partners work to ensure a quality start for young, underserved children by improving basic literacy skills and helping atrisk youth succeed. • United Way of Long Island and U.S. Representative Steve Israel announced a $699,600 grant for YouthBuild Long Island from the Department of Labor’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act initiative. This funding is in addition to $1 million in federal funds secured for YouthBuild by Rep. Israel in the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill, for a total of $1.7 million in new federal funds for YouthBuild Long Island. YouthBuild was launched in 2006 with generous support from JPMorgan Chase & Co.* • United Way of Long Island’s DREAMS For Youth Scholarship Program was awarded $80,000 from the DREAMS R Us Foundation. DREAMS For Youth provides scholarship grants to local middle and high school students to help them complete their education, pursue enrichment activities such as music and art, or participate in community service projects. * United Way of Long Island is an equal opportunity employer and YouthBuild is an equal opportunity program. The YouthBuild Long Island program offers auxiliary aid, services and activities upon request, to individuals with disabilities. The YouthBuild program is federally funded by the U. S. Department of Labor. 6 Board of Directors Robert Andrew Wild, Chairman Chairman Garfunkel, Wild & Travis, P.C. William M.
