"Didn't you see the topic? 'Unlikely lines from a cosmetics commercial' isip-isip din pag may time," wrote Xtian Sabs in response to a post by Angelo Delima on Facebook sharing the video, which he said was "not funny at all." On YouTube, user kasumi real shared the definition of the word “unlikely” to say the joke should not be taken seriously. In the segment “unlikely lines from a cosmetics commercial,” Ryan said, “We don't test any of our products on animals. We use Filipino children.” Netizens quickly reacted, calling the joke racist, tasteless and insulting. "Is this how wealthy countries bullied us Filipinos? It's not funny at all! The Philippine government must watch this and take a quick action regarding this matter! Stop racism and bullying!" wrote Jerico Siguido on Facebook. Samuel Sayawan, on the other hand, said the BBC management should have spoken with Ryan. Diane Pascual, meanwhile, said BBC should be held liable for the comedian’s joke. Other posts shot back at Ryan, saying that she should be the one the cosmetics are tested on, and not Filipino children. “This made me mad,” tweeted news anchor Noli De Castro’s daughter, Kat De Castro. Blogger Nica Bells also wrote, “I believe that the joke was racist. I want to stress out a question that was left hanging: Why use Filipino children?” Just a joke However, others said those who took offense should look at the topic and the nature of the show itself, instead of reacting negative- User xyr enc said on YouTube that Ryan’s joke should be a lesson to Filipinos: “I always see my fellow Filipinos insult others, making fun of Filipino minorities like the Aetas, Badjaos, Negritos, and all other ethnic minorities in the Philippines. Now most of us would react just because of this joke, to the point that they insult Ms. Ryan, the BBC, and the United Kingdom as a whole. I want to ask my fellow Filipinos: How does it feel?” On Tumblr, the-infamousme posted “An Argument In Defense of Katherine Ryan,” saying, “even if you argue that Ryan’s joke still was in poor taste, it was delivered in such a way that it should have been impossible to perceive as anything other than irony.” “If anyone should be offended, it should be cosmetic companies or, in fact, any other company that takes advantage of the poor, the weak or those with limited options. Then again, they probably won’t have time to be offended as they’re busy exploiting Filipino children.” ‘Watch the show’ In response to criticisms, Ryan posted on her Twitter account @Kathbum, “It was UNLIKELY lines from a cosmetics commercial. *UNLIKELY*. You'd be very unlikely to hear that. Because it would never happen.” All Male Hula Group to perform at Filipinos Making Waves Fest To the Hula Born, the Men. Based in Toronto and unique in all of Canada, Ha- nau I Ka Hula Na Kane or Born to the Hula, the Men – is a dance troupe composed PH ranks among most gay-friendly in the world by Philip C. Tubeza, Philippine Daily Inquirer The Philippines has earned its ranking as one of few gay -friendly countries in the world. Of the 39 countries covered by a global survey, only 17 countries had majorities that accepted homosexuality, with the Philippines ranking at number 10 among the 17. Despite its religiosity, the Philippines is one of the countries in the world where the level of public “acceptance” of homosexuals is high, according to the results of the survey. The survey titled “The Global Divide on Homosexuality” conducted by the US-based Pew Research Center showed that 73 percent of adult Filipinos agreed with the statement that “homosexuality should be accepted by society,” up by nine percentage points from 2002. The percentage of Filipinos who said society should not accept gays fell from 33 percent in 2002 to 26 percent this year, it added. This high level of acceptance, which is comparable to that found in secular western Europe, is even higher than those found in Japan (54 percent), South Korea (39 percent) or the United States (60 percent), where some states allow gay marriage. “Brazilians and Filipinos are considerably more tolerant of homosexuality than their countries’ relatively high levels of religiosity would suggest,” the Pew survey report said. The Philippines bucked the trend found in the survey showing that gays are mostly accepted in rich and secularized countries. “The survey … finds that acceptance of homosexuality is particularly widespread in countries where religion is less central in people’s lives. These are also among the richest countries in the world,” the Pew report said. cent of people in neighboring Indonesia, nine percent in Malaysia and 21 percent in China said homosexuality should be accepted, the report added. “In contrast, in poorer countries with high levels of religiosity, few believe homosexuality should be accepted by society,” it added. Not impressed Religiosity scale The Philippines is said to be one of the most religious countries in the world and almost a third of its population lives below the poverty line. In the survey’s “religiosity scale” where a score of “3” was the most religious, the Philippines almost got 2.5. “Age is also a factor in several countries, with younger respondents offering far more tolerant views than older ones,” the survey report said. And while gender differences are not prevalent, in those countries where they are, women are consistently more accepting of homosexuality than men,” it added. In the Philippines, 78 percent of those aged 18-29 who were interviewed said gays should be accepted, 71 percent for those aged 3049, and 68 percent for those 50 years old and above, according to the survey. The report also showed that of the eight countries surveyed in the Asia-Pacific region, the Philippines had the second highest acceptance rate next to Australia’s 79 percent. “In the Asia-Pacific region, where views of homosexuality are mostly negative, more than seven in 10 in Australia and the Philippines say homosexuality should be accepted by society,” the report said. In contrast, only three per- However, Filipino gay groups were not impressed by the survey results. When asked if the gay community in the Philippines felt accepted, Jonas Bagas, executive director of the TLF Share Collective, said: “Hardly.” “I think that the study only reflects the perceived acceptance of the LGBT community based on the high visibility of gay entertainers. It’s acceptance [that is] contingent on how you fit the acceptable stereotype—the gay entertainer, the creative, talented bakla, the lesbian security guard,” Bagas said. “Once you go outside these stereotypes, that’s when you encounter rejection,” he added. Bagas said a Filipino student in a lesbian relationship faces higher probability of getting kicked out of her school than a student in a heterosexual relationship. “We still have strong biases against gay sex, which for many is still deemed immoral and unnatural. This attitude fosters inequality in our laws, in education, healthcare and even within the family,” Bagas said. The Pew report said those who conducted the survey had face-to-face interviews with 804 Filipinos aged 18 and above from March 10 to April 3 this year. The interviews were conducted in Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilonggo, Ilocano and Bicolano. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent. of talented men who are committed to preserve and celebrate a sacred art form that was almost lost forever. It is dwarfed by some grandiose or elaborate festivities such as the “Taste of the Danforth” or the Mardi Gras style “Caribana” that usually draws unprecedented crowds. Within the Filipino community, it is hemmed in by other bigger, well-funded and established celebrations like the Mabuhay festival which has led the yearly commemoration of Philippine Independence Day in July for a decade now. It is under the aegis of the Philippine Independence Day Council or PIDC. We also have the Kalayaan of Mississauga and lately the controversial Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation (PCCF) which is actually a spin off or clone of the PIDC as they have identical programmes of events. This is because most of the officials of the PCCF were once top honchos of the PIDC. So it is not a surprise why these two organizations and their annual events seem to be in a collision course and competing with each other. Both of these two organizations lure their crowds with big names TV and movie personalities courtesy of two biggest TV networks in the Philippines, GMA Channel 7 and ABSCBN. They get huge revenues from ticket sales, beauty pageants, booth rentals and sponsorships and other fund raising gimmickry. FMW meanwhile, do not sell tickets. The festival is free to the public, held in an open venue that is the melting pot of the downtown core, which is the Yonge and Dundas square, now fast becoming the counterpart of the famous Times Square of New York. Bottom line is FMW do have name TV or movie stars to attract crowds but aspiring and rising Filipino Canadian artists or achievers within the community or in the mainstream. It’s because the festival’s main aim is to promote the Filipino as a people of great potentials, of great contributions and achievements not only within North America but elsewhere around the globe where Pinoy expats can be found. FMW is all about arts, culture, music, the youth and unity in diversity. It is in this tradition that for this year’s 7th edition, it will again honor outstanding Filipinos who have substantially “made waves” in the global stage. This year’s awardees include an inventor of the world’s first bamboo beer, a pop musician and composer, a Filipino-Canadian recently appointed to the judiciary and an outstanding baker who became big in business. For this year too, aside from the food galore and varied booths, there will be “live” boxing fights courtesy of the Hamilton-based Old School boxing club. The club has teamed up with FMW as its modest contribution to develop sports alternative among the youths against drugs and violence. COUNTERPOINT A.F. Soriano ALA EH ! YOUR HONOR On July 8, 2013, Steve Anthony Caroza will officially assume the position of Judge of the Superior Court of Ontario, the highest ever to be reached by a FilipinoCanadian in this nation’s judiciary. Formerly a judge at the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines, his elevation to Justice of the high court is further affirmation in the Filipino’s global achievement. On July 13, he will be one of the recipients of the Filipino Making Waves achievement awards along with other outstanding Filipino-Canadians that include PC Renato Valdez, Flor Vendiola and Mel Galleon of FV Foods, and special youth awardee. (ed:note—Justice Coroza received his award prior to July 13 in deference to his hectic schedule). A Batangueno from San Joaquin, Santo Tomas town, Coroza follows in the tradition of great lawyers and jurists from that southern province which has produced the likes of President Jose P. Laurel, the nationalist Don Claro M. Recto, Chief Justice Querubin Makalintal and the sublime paralytic, the national hero Apolinario Mabini. A master of law degree holder from Osgoode Hall Law school, Coroza is deeply committed in his advocacy of helping the youth specially new young immigrants at the same time serving as a director in the Alzheimer society of Peel region. Indeed, among the few Filipino-Canadians who hold a high position in the Canadian government, Justice Coroza has remained humble and low-profiled earning the respect of the community. He is truly deserving to be addressed as “Your Honor, “ or maybe “Ala eh Your Honor!”, as they say in Batangas. ***** ITS FESTIVE TIME : the Mabuhay festival is going outdoors on August 16,17and 18 at the Harbourfront . This time, there will be no big stars from the ABS-CBN/TFC group. In the aftermath of the dismal attendance of last year and the “hijacking “ by some personalities of the program’s event, The Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC) under Norma Carpio has made a very rational decision…open the festival to the public for free just like what the now 7-year old Filipinos Making Waves (FMWF) has been doing. In fairness to the PIDC, it was a “victim” of some selfish individuals who tried to control last year’s event to promote their own agenda and boost their egos. And to think some of them were volunteers but demanded payment for their services. The observance of the Independence day last June 12 was also “hijacked “ and “exploited “ by these same individuals. The result: The grassroots traditional open house at the consulate gave way to an expensive “elitist” fashion show that raised money for a private foundation. ***** ABS/CBN top comedian Vice Ganda continue to “reap the whirlwinds” and other very harsh and unfavourable criticisms over his offending remarks on gang rape and comments on the physical appearance of a very well known TV executive of a rival network. His spiel on Jessica Soho, GMA-7 vice president for news on her being a full size is way, way below the belt. It also showed his lack of respect and sensitivity on the plight of women victims of rape. Has success and fame given him the license to insult people whenever he wants? In his show here in Toronto last year, Vice displayed his “primadona attitude” and bloated ego at the dressing room. Teresa Torralba, wife of Mon Torralba of the Hotdog band fame, was shocked to learn that the comedian cannot stand being with coworkers during rehearsals. Teresa was accosted and asked what she doing inside the room. She replied she and the group were to provide the front acts for the comedian and her husband is the guitar player for the show. “Sabi ng PA niya (production assistant, or gofer for sort) ayaw niyang may hahara-hara sa dadaanan ni Vice”, said Teresa. June 2013 6 TO ADVERTISE please email at [email protected] The Redemptorist Santo Arrigo. C.Ss.R There is a traditional prayer to the Holy Spirit that I’m sure many of you know. It is, “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and we shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth.” This prayer is rich with the meaning of Pentecost. It also has rich meaning from our own experience of moments of opening our hearts to receive the Holy Spirit through Baptism, Confirmation, through other sacraments and of course, in our prayer. This prayer to the Holy Spirit points out 3 significant elements of our faith as a church. Firstly, the Holy Spirit is alive within you and me. Secondly, that Spirit in us is like a fire. And finally, with that fire of the Spirit that is in us, WE can help transform the face of the earth. We are reminded in our scriptures, that our faith, the love that we have for God and for one another, and our faithfulness in keeping the commandments are indications that the Spirit IS ALREADY at work in us. Calling us to live in unity with one another, like members of the body live and work in unison together. That Spirit who calls us together is alive in you and me. We are invited to get in touch with that Holy Spirit who whispers to our spirit, calling us to be alive in all that we do, freeing us our fears, compulsions, failures and from those things that keep our spirits and hearts captive. The Holy Spirit is alive within you and me. This Spirit dwelling in us, doesn’t just whisper to our spirit when we are ready to listen, but comes to us like fire... like tongues of fire that came upon the heads of the disciples moving them to stand before the crowd of many nations and languages. Some who stood there listening were their enemies, some were Jesus’ enemies, but the disciples had a fire inside of them that burned so much, they couldn’t help but preach Good News. They preached with power, and strength. The people who stood there listening, all heard this good news in their own language. For it was Good News meant for all people to hear. The Spirit enabled many gifts to come forth from these simple fishermen and peasants, gifts far more powerful than they would have imagined. Now, they could no longer sit around behind the locked doors of the Upper Room and wait for Jesus to come back and to act. They could- The Holy Spirit n’t sit around waiting for their enemies to act against them either. They were on fire...filled with the Holy Spirit. In the years following this first Pentecost, we hear how the apostles preached and protested against greed and injustice… violence and mistreatment of people. They taught about God and about the love to which all people were called – Jews, as well as Gentiles. This movement that grew became so powerful by the work of the Spirit…that it stood up against the power and force of the Roman state, and won. The Spirit in us is a fire. We burn with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We burn in our prayer, and in our daily life with the Holy Spirit touching our spirit to move us to do good and to do right. Moving us to proclaim that Jesus is Lord, and to help us pray, even when we can’t find the right words to express what is being moved in our spirit, deep in our hearts. Fire transforms, consumes and it purifies. How fitting that we connect the Holy Spirit moving in us with fire so that we will be transformed, consumed, and purified. What if we are not burning? Not on fire???? Then, the challenge that each one of us has is to allow that Holy Spirit to work like fire. It can be scary to give over control to The final theme of that prayer to the Holy Spirit challenges us to be disciples today, to carry the fire of the Spirit of God in our hearts, and be instruments of change, to transform and renew the face of the earth! St. Paul teaches us that there is a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit, Each gift is given to us for the benefit of the community, for the benefit of our spouses, our children and grandchildren, our neighbor, and also our enemies. The gifts are given to us to build and heal. The Holy Spirit transforms us, making us holy, and also whole, so that we can transform our little corner of the world. If we could acknowledge and capture the fire that the Spirit ignites in us and let it work in whatever we do, how different would the little corners of our world be! The Spirit would then accomplish what has been set out: the face of the earth would be transformed, changed! The Spirit enables us to transform hatred into love, war into peace, injustice into justice, individualism into a sense of community and caring. Through our own efforts, we may bring about peace and harmony and establish freedom for those who are oppressed. But if we have God’s Fire inside of us, then our own fire can light the way through the darkness of the world. Pentecost is a reminder for us that the fire inside of us is just waiting to spread. This fire of God will allow us to love as God loves, allow us to forgive as God forgives, to be compassionate as God is compassionate. No other way will we be able to do it, than if we allow our fire to spread. This is a great commission that we share with the early disciples. We don’t do it alone - we do with each other, we do it with the help of the promised Advocate, the Holy Spirit. Somehow, like the disciples, we must find space in our lives to be open to the Spirit’s power, the life -giving breath, fire that comes to transform and call us to act. The Spirit has been given to us. We are invited to welcome that Sweet Spirit into our hearts, so that the fire of God’s love will transform the world. May our prayer today always be an expression of that prayer to the Holy Spirit. “Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts, your faithful people and kindle us the fire of your National Shrine of our Mother of Perpetual Help Jose “Tani” Arca St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 131 McCaul St, Toronto (416) 598 3269 April 20, 1947 - May 20, 2013 Tani has returned to the loving arms of Our Lord. Villanis said most countries in the Asean region already have big beer companies and many of them are even monopolies in their area. But he thinks bamboo beer need not be seen as a threat but as “an innovative product which can unite the Asean community.” “Bamboo beer will pave the way for a highly competitive beer industry and unite the Asean community,” he asserted. The resilient bamboo plant can be propagated almost anywhere which makes it economically viable to all Asean-member nations. “The goal is to make this premium lager available to everybody, across cultures and social status, it’s the beer for the masses,” said Villanis. By January 2013, the business was officially registered. He says his business model is “conscious capitalism.” “This business model ensures that all stakeholders—partners, investors, customers and employees—would benefit from the business,” he expounded, adding that “it fulfills a higher purpose.” “We call our team the lost sons of our countries, in the sense that we all want to give something back to the Asean member-nations, starting with the Philippines. June 2013 10 Tourism TO ADVERTISE please email at [email protected] Top PH tourist spots vie to host 2015 APEC side meetings by Lois Calderon, ANC MANILA, Philippines - Metro Manila and at least 9 of the country's top tourist spots are making a pitch to become the venue for the sideline meetings of the APEC Summit, which the Philippines will be hosting in 2015. Local officials from Cebu, Tagaytay, Clark, Subic, Albay, Iloilo, Bacolod, Boracay and Davao all are trying to convince the National Organizing Council that they will be an ideal host. The council was created by President Benigno Aquino in November last year to manage the preparations for the APEC meetings. Among the criteria set by the council in choosing the sites are infrastructure, security, disaster preparedness, power supply stability, cleanliness and culture. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Economic Relations and APEC Secretariat Laura del Rosario says hosting the summit would be an extra "catalyst" that would accelerate the Aquino government's infrastructure program, since key transportation like airports, expressways and roads need to be ready by 2015. Some of the government's public private partnership projects are located in cities Lifestyle that have made a pitch like Cebu, whose airport project is up for bidding later this year. The council is expected to announce its final roster of sites for the Senior Officials Meetings and Sectoral Ministerial Meetings next month. Local government units got backing from people like Iloilo-born Senator Franklin Drilon who was there when Iloilo made its presentation before the APEC organizing council. Drilon said hosting the APEC sideline meetings would bring in business and more tourism to Iloilo. Band Waves Toronto’s top 6 bands to perform at Yonge-Dundas Square! of the group's marketing and artwork designs. UPPERCASE was formed in September 2009 in Toronto, Canada. It consists of Mark de Leon on vocals and guitars, Allan Lagat on bass and guitars, Jason Alba on piano and keyboards, Joey Giagonia on guitars, and Daniel Ascano on drums and percussions. Prior to its formation, Mark and Allan were former bandmates from a cover band they formed around 2006. When that stint didn't pan out, the two separated ways but three years later got re-acquainted through their own circle of friends who were also musicians in the Toronto band scene. An unfortunate car accident in October 2007 inspired Mark to start writing songs in his own time, and at the turn of the new year, he penned the songs "Time Space Warp" and balikbayan”. Throughout 2008 and 2009 he was able to accumulate a string of songs, and around September 2009, the two founding members embarked on forming a band with original music. The group name "UPPERCASE" came from a common friend in Mark Kevin Que, who eventually became very involved in most Around December 2009 the band found Daniel from a Facebook group of Toronto drummers, and eventually in August 2010 Daniel introduced Joey to the group as lead guitarist. In August 2010 the group's first music video for their first single "Balikbayan" was shot in several locations in Toronto led by Mark's friend JP de Guzman. The group eventually finished the EP and released it in March 2011, consisting of 5 all-original tracks and produced by independent label Radio Insect Records. Later that year Mark invited his old friend Jason to join at piano and keyboards, and with this latest addition the band roster was made complete. The group's music finds it roots from the Original Pilipino Music genre hailing from their native Philippines. Among the band's musical influences are the Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Sugarfree, and TrueFaith. The group promoted their debut EP album with various gigs and shows in the Greater Toronto Area, including performances at the 2011 Mabuhay Festival at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, at Cusina Lounge, at the BuzzFest event at Hard Rock Cafe Toronto, and at the 2012 Filipinos Making Waves Festival at Dundas Square. They were also featured in an episode of "Barkada", a show produced in Toronto broadcasted worldwide on GMA Pinoy TV in February 2012. It included an interview with the whole band, and a performance of their second single "In You" from their debut EP album. The online radio community started to pick up the buzz on the band's music. Listeners of BootlegRadio.com, an independent music online radio station based in the Philippines, voted UPPERCASE as Featured Artist for the month of August 2012 (http:// instagram.com/p/ NzxQ_ESIJc/). We believe that in the same way television revolutionized the mass market’s ability to receive information and entertainment, the wireless internet will be the next most important medium for our audience. Very soon, our Kapamilyas will enjoy special shows, receive our news, and interact with our stars from anywhere and anytime they want, through their tablets and cellphones. This is just the beginning of a whole new set of mobile experiences that we will bring to subscribers of ABSCBN Mobile,” Katigbak said.
