Familiar faces return for Purple & Gold Alumni Gathering
Over a hundred alumni, staff, coaches
and friends of Sacred Heart School
converged on their alma mater during
the school’s annual Purple & Gold AllSchool Reunion Weekend.
The weekend featured the Athletic
Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, a PCW
Football Game, and an evening alumni
gathering at the Eagle’s Club.
“We started this journey many
years ago when we went to
school here. This tradition of
excellence has been going
on for over 100 years -- and
we are very proud of that
tradition.“
- Mike Marek ‘70
Friday night featured smiles, laughter,
and recollections as teammates, family,
and coaches gathered in the Sacred Heart

Superintendent’s Letter
What an inspiring
experience it has
been to have had
Pope Francis visit the
United States. He is
a huge supporter of
Catholic schools. He
taught in a few of them
himself and apparently inspired
his students. He said: “Education
cannot be neutral, it is either positive
or negative; either it enriches or it
impoverishes, either it enables a
person to grow or it lessens.”
Education at Sacred Heart School,
with our Benedictine heritage, is
positive, it enriches and it enables
our students to grow in mind, body
and spirit.
We are moving in the right direction
under the guidance of the Holy
Spirit.
Thank you for partnering with us in
the great endeavor of forming our
future leaders!
Your brother in Christ,
Msgr. Mike Foltz
School Superintendent
Eagles come Home, from page 1
Sacred Heart alum and long time school
science instructor, Mike Marek ‘70,
emceed the banquet. “There’s a long
connection and this event is about
deepening our connections with one
another and more importantly with
Jesus Christ. That is the main focus of
our lives, through the gift of this school.”
Many memories were shared as the
honored teams reminisced about their
athletic seasons.
“It was the style of baseball
that really exhibited the
character of the kids. Having
established character and
integrity... to me those are the
amazing qualities of some
of the kids that have come
through this school.”

jump to 11-man this season, and haven’t
looked back as they are currently 6-1
on the season.
1958 Basketball Members and family representatives. L-R, Ron Wavra

Cariveau ‘53 (dec.) was represented by
all of his children as he and his team
were inducted into the 21st Sacred
Heart Hall of Fame class.
Marek thanked alumni and parishioners
for their attendance but also for the
sacrifices they have made to the school.
Since the Athletic Club instituted the
Hall of Fame in 1993, 41 individuals,
9 teams and one business have been
inducted into the Hall of Fame based
on their contributions to Sacred Heart
athletics on and off the field of play.
Marek said to the teams and alumni
gathered at the banquet, “Our intention
is to share your stories with our current
students so that this tradition connects
us all.” Video highlights from the season
The evening continued at the Eagle’s
Club where alumni gathered for dinner
and spent the night recollecting about
their time at SHS.

School’s Benedictine History Honored
Sisters and school’s Benedictine memory honored at school mural unveiling
Founded upon our Benedictine heritage of prayer and work.
These words are the beginning of Sacred Heart School’s mission
statement.
The school’s Benedictine heritage runs throughout our
history and is seen in our historical record and the countless
alumni who were educated by the Benedictine sisters. “For
100 years they established and ran this school,” said School
Superintendent, Msgr. Mike Foltz. “We want to honor them.”
A dedication and blessing of the newly installed Benedictine
mural was held this month in the high school commons.
Representatives of the religious sisters from Mount St. Benedict
attended the event as the Benedictine mural, created by artist
Karen Bakke, was officially unveiled.
Sr. Anita Whalen explains some of the symbolism she sees
in the mural to Bishop Balke and to Sacred Heart pastor, Fr.
Ilango, as Msgr. Foltz, school superintendent, looks on.
Sacred Heart liturgist Julie Marek ‘77 reminisces with
Sr. Eulalia Brophy, Sr. Karen Violette, & Sr. Anita Whalen
before the dedication of the Benedictine mural. In the
background are Sr. Norma Jean Edie & Sr. Lorraine Kraft.
“I think that this mural has a lot to say. We
support you in prayer, in our presence, and in
the spirit of the people educated here... The
sisters are still rooting for Sacred Heart.”

A Letter from the President
Greetings,
With the recent
growth and
outstanding NWEA
scores from last year,
there is a feeling that
this is going to be a
special year for Sacred Heart School!
In fact, we want to make 2015-2016
a year to remember! Here at Sacred
Heart School, “Your Child Matters.”
We are growing! Since June 2013 our
enrollment K-12 has increased 20.4%
(+56 students!).
Our first day of school kicked off in
an exciting way. Matt Birk, former
Minnesota Viking, Super Bowl
Champion with the Baltimore Ravens
and current Director of Football
Development for the National Football
League delivered an upbeat message
to our 5-12th grade students. He also
shared a few words of wisdom for our
Football team. It was an exciting day
for SHS!
Over the summer we had 28 students
attend Lake Trails Wilderness Camp
up at Lake of the Woods. Students
participated in a 5-7 day canoe and
camping excursion. The purpose was
to give students the opportunity to
deepen their faith, develop a higher
level of self-confidence and grow in
trust with their classmates.
Service is the focus of the year.
Students who have completed the
school’s service requirements will
be recognized with a special honor
cord at graduation. In addition
to our Christian Service Learning
class, we plan to continue volunteer
opportunities such as ditch cleaning,
rake-a-thon, and food and clothing
drives. By giving our students the
opportunity to serve others we
hope, upon adulthood, they will be
compassionate, selfless, caring and
giving individuals.
Thank you for your support and help
in moving us forward!
God Bless,
Carl Adolphson
Sacred Heart School President

Homecoming 2015
A fun week at SHS concludes with Coronation & Football
Sacred Heart welcomed home alumni,
family and friends last Friday for
the culmination of Homecoming
Week. During the week, grades 7-12
participated in a variety of dress up
themed days — Jersey Day, Tourist Day,
Senior Citizen Day, Spirit Day and Dress
Up Day. The week ended with Mass,
Coronation, pep fest, and football game.
Coronation followed beginning with the
introduction of the homecoming court
and of the reigning 2014 Homecoming
Queen, Marina O’Leary. O’Leary was
invited back to crown the 2015 Queen.
Our co-op football team, Polk County
West, went into Friday’s game
undefeated at 6-0. They lost a close one
to Fosston, 36-35. The team is now 6-1.
Joe Kulas ‘08, a graduate & member
of the recently inducted Hall of
Fame 2005 Baseball team, spoke to
students, family, & friends during
Friday’s coronation. Kulas thanked
several teachers and spoke about the
treasure Sacred Heart School is to
students.

Matt Birk, former Viking, Super Bowl
Champ with the Ravens, and NFL
Director of Football Development
shared his faith journey with SHS 5-12th
graders on the first day of school.
Eugene the Eagle made an
appearance at the UND Potato Bowl
Parade. Eugene, the SHS mascot, was
joined by numerous school families,
friends, and alumni who came to
march. Follow Eugene’s adventures at
www.sacredheartegf.net/Eugene.
Sixth graders were trained in as
members of the S.T.A.R. Team
(Students Teaching Attitudes of
Respect), and will take the lessons
back to their peers in grades K-5.
Sacred Heart is the only participant in
the program that trains all 6th graders.
Fr. Jerry Rogers, former Sacred
Heart Pastor & Superintendent
from 1981-90, spoke to high school
students during their monthly “Theosis”
presentation. He spoke about his time
working with the Native American
people at St. Mary’s Mission on the
Red Lake Indian Reservation. He also
commented, “some of my best years
as a priest were here keeping this high
school open... I firmly believe the power
of a Catholic education can transform
lives.“ He is pictured above with
Theology Instructor, Jason Eilers.
The Merth Gymnasium got a bit of
a facelift over the summer. Thanks
to an anonymous donor, the Merth
Gymnasium is now sporting a new look
with new floor paint and stain.
Sacred Heart senior athletes visited
elementary students at the other
Grand Cities Catholic Schools to talk to
their students about SHS, Homecoming
week and athletics.
It was announced in September that
the school is in the early stages of
assembling a June 2016 Rome trip for
11th & 12th graders. This trip will be
done with the University of Mary, and
will eventually become an annual trip.
Students volunteered to clean Sacred
Heart’s adopted stretch of highway
in September. In conjunction with
the school’s philosophy to foster
students who become “citizens who
are responsive to the needs of society,”
Sacred Heart School is setting the
challenge to students in grades nine
through twelve, to achieve 100 hours
of service prior to graduation. If they
complete the challenge they will be
recognized with a white honor cord at
graduation.
“... It makes my heart ‘beat for joy’ as I reflect on the ways you are keeping the Benedictine
Spirit alive and well at Sacred Heart! I am a 1945 graduate; taught at Sacred Heart for
half a year in the early ‘60’s and then was asked to be the grade school principal from
1968 – 1979! These were wonderful years! I am so happy to hear that the enrollment is
growing. May God bless all who are continuing to lead little ones and youth to grow in their love
of God! Peace+” - Sr. Mary Jean Gust ‘45, Faculty/Staff 1966-1979, in a September email.
“... As far as that day goes, it was the Sacred Heart tournament. As the folks who helped us set up found
out, they had quite a bit for us to do that morning. But once they were set to tee off, everything went very
well, including the banquet afterwards. This may have been the most polite group of people, as a whole, that I
have encountered out here so far. They were a delight to work with. Thanks, Sacred Heart people!”
- Grand Forks Country Club in an excerpt from their Club Newsletter about SHS’s Back-the-School Golf Scramble.
A Letter from Development
This fall, Sacred
Heart began its
104th year of
educating students
and its 122nd year
serving the Catholic
Community of East
Grand Forks. What
better gift could the
Sacred Heart community give except
to ensure that both of these missions
continue into the future?
Sacred Heart is pleased to announce
the creation & IRS approved,
Sacred Heart Foundation, a 501(c)3
organization.
Much like the SHARE club that was
started by many Sacred Heart parents,
parishioners, and local business,
this Foundation exists to ensure the
vitality of both Sacred Heart School
and Sacred Heart Parish through
endowments and special funding.
We knew it was time to have a vehicle
for people to give generously through
annual gifts and estate planning so
the legacy of another 122 years will
continue.
The past and present people that
make up Sacred Heart School and
Sacred Heart Church make this
position more like a ministry to
God. You, the person that is reading
this article, make Sacred Heart
successful. My job is to share Sacred
Heart’s successes and to give you
opportunities to share your talent
and to give generously. Thank you to
all the Sacred Heart supporters who
give me time in their day to share our
stories and who graciously give to
Sacred Heart.
I look forward to meeting with all of
you as we continue to grow the future
of Sacred Heart Church and Sacred
Heart School!
God Bless,

Foundation ensures endurance of “A New Day” Gifts
Many of the National Advisory Council’s
recommendations to establish
enrollment growth at Sacred Heart
School have already been implemented
-- and we continue to see positive
changes daily.
This summer, Sacred Heart School was
pleased to announce the formation of a
charitable foundation in its name. This
IRS, 501(c)3 organization ensures the
perpetuation of “A New Day” capital
campaign dollars, investing them in
education, building, and the people
here at Sacred Heart.
“Our Catholic school is a
priceless treasure & an integral
element of evangelization. The
formation of the Foundation &
its ongoing success is vital to the
success of our Catholic schools
in spreading the good news of
Jesus.”
- Joe Martin, SHS parent
& Foundation board member
Your “A New Day” capital campaign gifts
have been critical in the facilitation of
this continued growth.
Capital campaign gifts have ensured
that Sacred Heart can continue to foster
Catholic education in the greater Grand
Forks community!
Thank you to everyone who has given during our “A New Day” Capital Campaign.
As of October 4th, 2015, we have reached $5,481,722.23 in pledged gifts.
In December of 2013, we began to raise the funds necessary to increase
enrollment, teacher pay, tuition assistance, and to bring the school to a state of
financial stability. Thank you for your generosity!
