Greetings to everyone
This term we had the Catholic Review team visit our school and
their report highlighted some of the things that we do very well
as a school.
“There are so many aspects of school culture that stand out for this community of young
women. The staff work collegially and the students talk about the way they support and
encourage each other. It is easy to see that this is a school that has built a strong bond with
its students through the quality of pastoral care and relationships with staff.”

Congratulations to all staff and students who make this school the great place it is. The full report
will be made available on the website in due course and we continue to be part of a three year
review cycle.
On the first day of next term we are having another review, this time by the Education Review
Office (ERO), a government department that evaluates the performance of schools. They will be
focussing on learner success and evaluating how well our school curriculum promotes learning. This
will be a challenging time for all of us, especially given the changes in leadership that have only just
happened, but one that we will embrace and use constructively to improve our practice.
Some words from Euphrasie Barbier 1869 may help us in our preparation and during the review
time:
“It is with prayer and a close union with God that we find enlightenment in doubt,
consolation in troubles, and invincible force in the midst of difficulties
and success in the works of zeal entrusted in our care.”

As it is Term Two, all students need to be wearing:


Black opaque tights
Blazers – must be worn to and from school
All long hair must be neatly tied up.
We would like to thank all caregivers for supporting us in helping the students to wear their
uniform with pride.

NCEA
Please look at the due dates for the NCEA payments carefully. If you require financial assistance, please action this now. The
financial assistance forms have been sent via email. A separate fee has been introduced this year by NZQA for Scholarship.
Fees for NCEA
In 2015 the Fee for NCEA is $76.70 per candidate this fee is substantially reduced if you are eligible for
financial assistance.
ALL FEES MUST BE PAID BEFORE 28 AUGUST
The school makes one payment to NZQA for fees. Late payments will need to be paid to NZQA directly.
NZQA will charge late payment penalties.
SCHOLARSHIP FEE
$30.00 per subject
This year, there is a separate fee for each New Zealand Scholarship subject. There can be no withdrawals
after 1 September.
Financial Assistance Forms
These forms are available at the school office or you can download them from the NZQA website.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FORMS ARE DUE AT THE SCHOOL OFFICE BY 28 AUGUST
Financial Assistance is available to families who have two or more children who are candidates where
the total fees are more than $200.
Financial Assistance is available to families who have a community services card or a joint family
income that would entitle you to receive a Community Services Card.
Financial Assistance is available to families where the fee payer is receiving a Work and Income or Study
Link benefit.

Host families wanted
July 2015 - We are looking for host families for a group of Japanese students coming to Sacred Heart College in July. They
arrive Sunday, 19 July and are here until 28 July. Host families will be paid $315 for 9 nights and will be expected to provide a
room and 3 meals per day. The students are responsible for their own transport costs.
August-September 2015 - We are looking for host families for a group of Japanese students coming to Sacred Heart College in
August. They will be here for 12 nights. They arrive at 3pm on Monday, 24 August and they leave Saturday, 5 September. Host
families will be paid $420 for 12 nights and will be expected to provide a room and 3 meals per day. The students are
responsible for their own transport costs.

Congratulations
Congratulations to golfer Julianne Alvarez (Head Girl 2014) for
winning the 2015 Hutt City Sports Awards Young Sportswoman
award. Year 12 student Renee Lepou (Taekwondo) was also a
finalist. Fantastic achievement by both.
Renee Lepou also competed at the Taekwondo New Zealand
Open held in Auckland during April, winning gold in the
Blackbelt Division. Renee is currently ranked number 1 in her
division in New Zealand.
Year 12 student Shelby Romero won gold in a junior
category of the 2015 IPSC River City Open pistol shooting
competition held in Wanganui. What a great result.

Olivia Hoebers – Bachelor of Science
Well done to the SHC Equestrian Team members Jayde Starling (with Missy), Madison Hamlin (with Lucy), Kayleigh McLachlan
(with Cocoa) and Jess Viviers (with Katie). They came 5th out of 26 schools in the April inter-schools equestrian event held at
Solway Showgrounds, Wairarapa, ahead of schools such as Nga Tawa Diocesan School.
Debating
Midseason update - The Sacred Heart College
Debating Club has had a very successful season so
far. We have learnt valuable facts and gained vital
skills to prepare for upcoming debates. This
preparation has paid off with us winning at least
50% of debates each week. The Debating Club has
come a long way since the first meeting with many
students attending our Tuesday session. We have
built long lasting relationships that will befit our
college lives and will continue to do so for the rest
of the season.

Nga Manu Korero 2015
On 1 May Sacred Heart College hosted the Nga Manu Korero Secondary School
Speech Competitions, a wonderful celebration of Maori language. Our Manu Korero
team members were Kessyd Paranihi-Nuku, Peta-Rose Mahuika, Cheyanne McIvor
and Tia McDougall.
The team did really well with Kessyd placing 3rd in the Senior Maori category and Tia
coming 3rd in Junior English.
It was great to see the Sacred Heart Community coming together to host the
competition, with a teachers only day enabling staff and students to host and feed
the many schools taking part. Thank you to Mrs Tawai Frost for organising, along
with the MCs Mr John Screech, Miss Sinapi Taeao and Ms Dayll McCahon, and Ms
Brigid Gilmore and Mr Tim Baxter and their team of staff and students for preparing
lunch.
We received fantastic feedback from participating schools about our hospitality. Kia koutou katoa nga mihi nunui.

O'Shea Shield
Congratulations to the O’Shea Shield team who recently were runners-up in the
competition (with St Pats Town and Sacred Heart, Napier). Competition was
fierce and only 1 point separated us from the eventual winners, St Catherine’s
College.
The annual O’Shea Shield Competition is a key event where our special Catholic
character is celebrated in a weekend of oratory, debating, Scripture readings,
religious questions and drama. We compete against other Catholic colleges from
central New Zealand. For each event, aside from the grade/mark that is given by
the adjudicators, a score (of up to 6) is given that counts towards the overall
Shield competition. This year’s event was held on the weekend of 2-3 May.
Our team is selected mainly from Year 13 students, who audition for a place, and
the winner of the Year 10 speech competition. This year, we entered a new
event, Scripture Reading in Te Reo and were represented by a Year 12 student.
The whole team with their coaches from the English and RE Departments
studied and rehearsed in the weeks leading up to the competition including
coming in over the school holidays. The commitment of all was amazing. Well
done girls!

Library News
eBooks
Library users can now enjoy their favourite author
and books in eBook format, an electronic version of
a printed book. Our initial eBook collection consists
of about sixty books and we are encouraging
students and staff to make themselves familiar with
the following step by step process of downloading a
book onto their device or computer.
The 2015 NZ Book Awards for Children
and Young Adults
This year for the first
time schools were
invited to participate in
the judging of this
prestigious award by
giving students the opportunity to vote from a
selection of books which will ultimately create a
finalist list for the Children’s Choice Awards. The
books and voting papers were promoted around the
school by our Head Librarian Helena Li, and we have
had a high number of votes and interest in the
books from our school to help the judges with their
final list. Judges will collate the votes from all
schools who participated throughout New Zealand
and announce the finalists at the end of May.

Study group runs every Thursday
from 3.30 – 4.30pm in the library. It
is open to all students who need help
with any subject or who just want to
come and work for an hour

Fundraising
Two Vinnytas Projects to Support
Women's Refuge drive
Over the next two weeks we are having a form class competition to
bring toiletries which we will take to Women's Refuge. Women arrive
at the refuges without the basics, so they are always in need of soap,
deodorant, shampoo and other toiletries and necessaries.
Film Fundraiser for St Vincent de Paul, Nepal
The date to put in your diaries: Wednesday, July 1st, 6.30pm at the
Lighthouse Petone. The film: a great literary classic, Far From the
Madding Crowd, (suitable for senior students and lovers of pastoral
romance). $20 per ticket which also puts you into a raffle draw and
there will be nibbles for you at the film.

Vinnytas is Sacred Heart's student group that combines
Caritas fundraisers and Young Vinnie's projects. Many thanks for your
support and special thanks to Olivia Van Woerkom and our Vinnytas

Music
There is a lot happening in the music world at Sacred Heart
College – music lessons, performances, concerts, composing
and competitions.
Rockquest
Our State of Endeavour band (Eris Atienza, Tiaan BonicaKururangi, Eleanor Cox and Vaishnavi Sivakumar) played at
Rockquest again this year. We are so proud of these girls
who are now in the third year as a self-directed and
independent band. They are busy creating original songs.
We are very keen to have more bands at Sacred Heart. All
girls interested please make yourselves known to the Music
department and we are happy to help you get a group
together.
Our State of Endeavour
Barbershop and Big SIng
At the end of Term One, Wellington Singers in Harmony ran
an introductory workshop on Barbershop style in our PAC.
About 60 of our girls participated enthusiastically. This
experience developed into a chorus of 30 talented girls from
Year 9 to Year 13 who performed at the regional competition
at the Te Rauparaha Arena Porirua on Thursday evening,
21 May. The chorus presented The San Francisco Bay Blues
chorus with style and flair. We were the only chorus from the
Hutt Valley! Next year we will compete fully with two
choruses. The same group of girls who now make such a
great sound will also singing at the Big Sing Regional Festival
on Wednesday, 3 June. Thanks to Sharon Yearsley, Sinapi
Taeao and Dianne Tennent for their support.
Chamber Music
We are really grateful to have our flute tutor Rebecca Steele’s
expert tuition to develop our chamber music trio. This is high
level playing and Victoria Choi, Janelle Divinagracia, and
Aezielle Zapanta will compete at Victoria University on Sunday,
7 June.
