Reading the signs
of the times
One of the most significant events in
the history of the Catholic Church
was the Second Vatican Council,
which took place between 1962 and
1965. Gaudium Et Spes was one of
the key documents of the Council.
Its opening sentence reads:
The joys and the hopes, the griefs and
the anxieties of the men of this age,
especially those who are poor or in any
way afflicted, these are the joys and
hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the
followers of Christ.
This is one of my favourite sentences
that has come out of the Vatican.
This sentence is a clear statement for
the need for empathy and solidarity,
especially with those most in need.
It is a statement which reminds us
that there is no ‘them and us’, there
is only ‘us’.
Another stirring sentence further
into Gaudium Et Spes reads:
Conference. Archbishop Porteous
quoted to us from another Papal
document, Evangelii Nuntiandi.
Therein it states that the mission
of the Church is to evangelise. It
goes on to say that the best way to
evangelise is by your witness, that is,
by who you are. St Francis of Assisi
famously said the same thing in
different words:
Preach the Gospel at all times and
when necessary use words.
When we think back to our own
teachers, it is often the case that
we don’t remember a lot of the
detail of what they taught us, but
we remember their character. Our
students are adept at seeing through
us and they know whether or not we
practice what we preach.
This Term I have had the privilege
of being Acting Principal of this
great College. Every day there
have been challenges, but I have
also had unrelenting support from
staff, students and the Sacred
Heart College community. I take
great pride in being a part of this
community. It has been very
affirming to hear again and again
from families seeking admission
and from others connected to the
College that we are a community of
faith, care and learning. While there
is no room for complacency, I am
confident that Mary MacKillop and
Julian Tenison Woods would also
affirm that we are authentically living
out their dream and the aspirations
of the great Vatican documents.

responsibility of reading the signs of the
times and of interpreting them in the
light of the Gospel, if it is to carry out
its task.
At Sacred Heart College we venerate
the memory of Mary MacKillop and
Julian Tenison Woods who read the
signs of the times and created the
religious order of the Sisters of
St Joseph dedicated to teaching those
who might not otherwise receive an
education and to gently bring young
people to an awareness of the God
within.

In our Catholic schools as part of the
Church we need to be continually
‘reading the signs of the times’ and
responding in light of the Gospels.
As one of the Sisters of St Joseph said
to me yesterday, the mission of Jesus
is the Kingdom of God or the reign
of God. That is, living out the values
proclaimed in the Gospels.

JJAMM Week
The Feast Day of St Mary of the
Cross MacKillop falls on the 8th of
August and during the week leading
up to this date the College celebrated
JJAMM week. JJAMM stands for
Joseph, Julian (Tenison Woods) and
Mary MacKillop, and it’s a time
when we remember and celebrate the
life and work of Australia’s first saint.
On Friday 7th of August, students
in Grades 5-10 attended Mass at the
Cathedral to celebrate the Feast Day
while students in Prep – Grade 4
observed this special occasion with a
Liturgy of the Word at school.
Even though the day was wet,
students participated in a range
of fun activities including team
building games, tug of war, dancing,
singing, skipping and a quiz. At
lunch time we had a barbecue and
in the afternoon we all gathered in
the SSJ to watch ‘Sacred Heart’s Got
Talent’ where we were entertained
with dancing, singing, gymnastics
and musical performances. The
opportunity for all to participate
in various activities in a fun-filled
atmosphere certainly united our
school community.
On the Wednesday we held our
JJAMMboree day where regular
classes were suspended and
primary and secondary students
joined together for a day of fun.
JJAMMboree day helps to promote
JJAMM spirit through promotion of
values such as kindness, selflessness
and including others. On the day,
our older students look out for
younger students, helping them
with various activities, ensuring that
interactions are positive and that all
students are included. JJAMMboree
day is a time when we all gather
together to foster whole school
bonding and build house spirit.

MacKillop with a beautiful liturgy
in Sacred Heart Church. We sang
songs and said prayers in memory
of her. Grades 5 and 6 students
were able to join the rest of the
College for a Feast Day Mass at St
Mary’s Cathedral, which again was a
magnificent celebration of St Mary
MacKillop’s life.
With Term 3 came a focus on
Delany House and the expectation
of co-operation and as it developed
into a term of much activity,
co-operation on all levels was just
what was required. We hit the
ground running upon return from
the break, with JJAMMboree day
being held on Wednesday, 5th
August. This is one of the genuine
opportunities during JJAMM Week
when both Primary and Secondary
Campuses can combine to enjoy
a full day of fun and activities.
The younger Primary students
got to meet their older buddies
during the week before and made
some “Chatterboxes” in the house
colours of Delany, Quinlan, Julian
and Xavier. These chatterboxes
contained “Get to know you”
questions, which helped in breaking
the ice ready for the next week.
Even though we had to implement
wet weather activities due to a rainy
and cold day, JJAMMboree itself
was a fabulous day of activities in
the morning and Sacred Heart’s
Got Talent performances in the
afternoon. It was wonderful to
see the older buddies really caring
for their younger counterparts
whilst undertaking activities such
as dance competitions, team
building challenges and indoor
athletic games, just to name a
few. On Friday August 7th, the
younger students in Grades Prep –
4 celebrated St Mary of the Cross

Following JJAMM Week, the
Primary campus celebrated Book
Week for 2015. All students were
invited to come to school dressed
as their favourite character from
their favourite book and it was
wonderful to see so much colour,
interest and excitement that day.
We celebrated with a fabulous Book
Week Parade in the afternoon, and
were also lucky enough to have two
visiting authors, Gabrielle Wang and
Michael Salmon, with us for part of
the day. Many children were very
excited and inspired after attending
writer’s and illustrator’s workshops
with them. It was also fantastic to
see so many of our dedicated staff
getting into the spirit of the day, and
coming along as a character.
Other important parts of our
broadened curriculum have been
covered with visits for both students
and parents from organisations
such as CatholicCare (Family
Life programs), Cybersafety and
Fire Education. This term also
saw the implementation of the
STEM research project, which is
being undertaken in collaboration
with UTAS. STEM is a 4 year
longitudinal study in the areas of
Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics (STEM) and
has commenced with our Grade 3
classes undertaking lessons focussing
upon the concept of variance, and
in the making of “licorice logs”.
Data is collected about the teaching
and learning that is taking place
during these exciting activities
which is analysed. We saw some very
interested and excited faces in Grade
3 during this term and look forward
to further activities in Term 4.
We have also had a term of
excursions. Outdoor and off site
learning is a high priority of the
curriculum in the Primary and
we have had the opportunity to
experience a wide variety of excursions
and activities to places such as
Bonorong Wildlife Park, Woodsdale
School Museum, Haldane Reserve,
The Botanical Gardens, TMAG, Mt
Wellington Bush walks, the Jump
Rope for Heart Jump Off and even
just over to Clare Street oval for
environmental care trips with Kinder
classes once a week. It was pleasing to
have such positive feedback from the
general public about how wonderfully
respectful and well-behaved our
students were on all of these occasions.
All of these extras along with our
normal teaching and learning
programs has made Term 3 an
exceptionally busy term.

DELANY WEEK
Delany Week was held during the week beginning the
17th of August and students celebrated the ethos of
service by raising money and awareness for St Vincent de
Paul. Student leaders, Harry Legro, Beth Pullen, Brodie
Parker and Matilda Rowe reminded us at the House
Assembly that Archbishop Delany and Frederic Ozanam
(founder of St Vincent de Paul) were both inspired by the
example of Jesus, to serve those in the community who
were most needy. Delany House held their own Winter
Appeal with donations of warm clothing, blankets and
bedding filling the bins held in MacKillop Court. Money
was raised by holding a cake and milkshake stall.
This year the students of Sacred Heart College
participated in the Vinnies Student Sleepout which was
held in the SSJ from 6.30pm on the Friday, 21st August
until 7.30am Saturday morning. Over fifty students
braved the winter cold and learnt about the realities of
homeless living with only a sleeping bag and cardboard
box for warmth. They were joined by Loui’s Van
volunteers who provided their evening meal of soup and
sandwiches.
Sincere thanks to all who supported Delany Week
especially the staff who joined in the sleepout for all
or part of the experience: Mr Tom Reale, Mrs Melissa
Brown, Mr Mike Casey, Mrs Kylie Nelson, Mrs Robyn
Thomson and Mr Adam Mills.

BOOKWEEK
Bookweek was held on Wednesday,
12th August and our students (and
parents) certainly didn’t disappoint
with their creativity. We saw students
from Kindergarten through to Grade
6 parade their outfits to a packed
assembly which was held in the SSJ.
Bookweek characters varied across the
grades with there being many minions,
Harry Potters, wizards and witches.
It is always wonderful to see our
students so enthusiastic during
Bookweek!

ANNUAL STANLEY BURBURY THEATRE UTAS
On Friday, 21st August approximately 70
students from Grade 6 through to Grade 10
represented Sacred Heart College at the eagerly
awaited Annual Stanley Burbury Theatre
UTAS.
This was the fifth such concert and once again
all in attendance were amazed by the quality
and certainly the talent of our students. The
Senior String Ensemble, the Stage Band and the
Senior Band entertained us with such favourites
as ‘Bag O’ Blues’, ‘Prelude and Firestorm’, ‘And
All That Jazz’ and ‘Route 66’. These tunes and
many more had audience members tapping and
clapping along.
In addition we also had our Grade 9 and
Grade 10 Music classes entertain us with such
numbers as ‘Stay with Me’ and ‘I Love Rock
and Roll” with the finale number being the Rod
Stewart classic ‘Sailing’ while solo performances
by Taylia Fone-Stephenson and Sarah Gridley
were captivating.
Many of the students who performed on the
night have studied the guitar, drums, keyboards
or voice for many years and this standard
certainly shows.
We are certainly thrilled and delighted by
the amazing talents and commitment of our
students and look forward to showcasing our
talented students again in the Stanley
Burbury Theatre!
These concerts would not be at all possible
without the expert hand and passion of our
music teachers Mr Peter Warren and Ms
Carmelita Coen (with Mrs Robyn Males and
Mrs Rebekah Grice as instrument tutors) and
they should be extremely proud of all the
achievements made over the years and
especially since the inception of the
Instrumental Programme.

Another huge term in Primary Sport at Sacred Heart
College with basketball, soccer, netball, football, SHC
Primary Athletics Carnival, Waterpolo, fitness classes,
and Jump Rope for Heart!
It is wonderful to see the continuing high participation
rates in all sports which are offered to our Primary
students. Thanks to all family members that encourage
and support our sports in so many ways as we would
not be able to offer what we do without your
assistance and support.

WINTER SPORTS
Our College Netball teams have had great success
with the Grades 7, 8 and 10 teams all making their
grand finals. The Grade 7 and Grade 10 teams
managed to win convincingly over Mt Carmel and
MacKillop respectively. Unfortunately, the Year 8’s
lost in a close battle with St Mary’s.
Our Girls’ Waterpolo team also qualified for their
grand final, accounting for Fahan in the preliminary
final. The girls won the grand final defeating Mount
Carmel 7-5.
Hockey teams have performed strongly with the
Girls’ team defeating Mount Carmel 1-0 in the
Grand Final and our boys team finishing 3rd.
Boys’ soccer has commenced with both Grade 7/8
boys and Grade 9/10 boys having strong starts to
their season.
Our major focus in the coming weeks will be the
Athletics Carnivals with the SHC carnival on
Wednesday 2nd September, the SSATIS
event on Tuesday 22nd September
and State SATIS event on
the 17th October.

JJAMM CELEBRATIONS

GRADE 5 TMAG EXCURSION
Grade 5 recently visited the
Tasmanian Museum and art gallery
to learn about the early colony of
Hobart. The program that is run
focuses on why Sullivans Cove was
the preferred site for Hobart town
and the impact settlement had on the
Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
Our tour guide John pointed out the
Commissariat Building which was
built between 1808 and 1810 and is
the oldest building in the museum
precinct and the earliest surviving
building in Tasmania. The building
was originally used as a storage unit
and ships could come right up to
the gate of the Museum and load
and unload the goods from the
Commissariat. Once we had moved
to the Museum we began building
the town of Hobart by placing replica
buildings onto a floor map. We
dressed up in some clothing of the
people of the time and we were able
to handle historical items such as
convict bricks and tools.
We all had a very interesting time,
many of us saying that we would visit
the Museum again soon so that we
could have more time to look at all
the exhibits in the Bond Store.

PREP CORDA
In Prep Corda we’ve settled
beautifully into full time school
life. We have an ongoing focus
on developing skills in working
co-operatively and constructively
with others, with Christian values
underpinning our interactions.
A major focus is learning to read
and write, a challenging but very
exciting process. In Mathematics
we are investigating numbers to
twenty through a variety of handson activities and games, exploring
how numbers connect and relate
to each other. Most fortnights we
visit Haldane Reserve, where we
make real world connections to the
concepts we are learning about in
class, such as our basic needs and
seasonal changes, while fostering an
appreciation for the beautiful world
God has given us.
We’ve had a lot of fun so far and are
looking forward to next term when
we will be exploring some of the
ways families celebrate important
events, investigating how things
move and participating in Learn
to Swim.

WAVERLEY INTERNATIONAL
SCHOOLS NETBALL
TOURNAMENT
During the last week of Term 2, nine students from
Sacred Heart College and one from MacKillop
Catholic College travelled to Melbourne to play
in the Waverley International Schools Netball
Tournament. We stayed in Orange Serviced
Apartments, Glen Waverley, which was just a 5
minute drive from the Waverley Netball Centre.
Competing against teams from all over Australia,
New Zealand, Malaysia and Samoa, games were
played over 4 days in 3 pools. SHC were in Pool
C and won 6 of their first 7 games to finish 2nd in
their group and advancing to the top half playoffs
on the final two days. On the 3rd day we played
2 games, defeating Sacred Heart Girls College,
Victoria and going down to Bukit Jalil Sports
School, Malaysia. This put us in the 5-8 playoff
section on the final day, ultimately finishing 8th
after a frustrating loss vs Monivae College, but
overall a fantastic result and improvement on last
year’s result.
Whilst in Melbourne, we also managed to rack
up plenty of exercise at the DFO and Chadstone
Shopping Centres as well as catching the
Collingwood vs Hawthorn footy on Friday night
and visiting St Kilda and other areas in Melbourne.
Team Coach Belinda Vinen did a fantastic job and
the girls can be proud of their efforts as we strive to
become back to back State High School champions
at the Tassie Hawks Cup in September.

Getting to know the staff...
MRS ANITA SMITH – BUSINESS MANAGER
What does your job involve at
Sacred Heart and how long have
you been working here?
As Business Manager I am
responsible for the College’s business
functions including financial,
administrative, property, risks and
compliance. The job is diverse
and I enjoy working with staff at
both a strategic and operational
level. The most satisfying part of
my job is managing the capital
development programs to improve
the environment and learning spaces
for our staff and students. I started
at the College in 2000 and have seen
the College change dramatically over
the last 15 years.
If you could be the main character
in any movie, which one would
that be and why?
I would like to be the lead character
Tris in Divergent and Insurgent. Her
character is idealistic, compassionate,
brave and adventurous. I like that
she is strong, athletic and gets to go
on a futuristic flying fox over and
between buildings in the city at
night, looks like fun!
What is your ideal family holiday
– with money being no object!
With the family I would love to go
to Africa and do a safari, travel to the
Galapagos Islands, then do a week
skiing in one of the top ski resorts
and finish with a relaxing week in the
Greek Islands.

Who would you share your last
supper with and why?
Family and close friends as they are
at the centre of my life and I would
want to spend my last moments
surrounded by people I love and can
share a laugh with.
What is the best present that you
have ever received?
My daughter was born close to my
birthday so that was the best present
ever. This year I also received a
Polar GPS watch from my family
which was a great gift to keep me
motivated.
What is your favourite thing to do
on the weekend?
I love to be outdoors walking the
dogs or bike riding either on the
road or on the bike tracks if I have
the kids with me. I also enjoy a bit
of retail therapy and going out
for breakfast.

had an extremly busy term.
This Term we farewelled our
President, Mrs Michelle Stolp and
welcomed Ms Michelle Williams as
a caretaker President until the end
of the year. We would like to say a
very big thank you to Michelle for
her amazing work with the Parents
& Friends Association over the last
few years and we look forward to
her continued involvement with the
Association.
This Term we saw the Annual
Quiz Night being held in a packed
MacKillop Court on Saturday,
15 August. The Quiz Night has
become a regular social event on our
school calendar and is always well
attended – and we thank our parent/
guardian/friends who have continued
to support this wonderful event over
the years. To add to the excitement
of the evening there was a three way
tie for first place. Well done to all
who participated.

We saw a presentation by a senior
Cybersmart trainer who provided
information for our parents and also
made a presentation to our students
from Grade 3 through to Grade 10 –
these were well attended.
Don’t forget to mark your calendar
with the SHC Fair which is to be
held on Saturday 19th March from
4pm until 7pm.
