Heretaunga College Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders Information for International Students General Information Heretaunga College was established in 1954. It is co-educational, caters for years 9 to 13 (ages 13-19) and has a roll of 730. Heretaunga College offers Students • • • • • • A caring, well-qualified teaching staff. Well-equipped classrooms and specialist areas. Excellent computer areas including internet access. English as a Second Language tuition including subject support. Preparation for national qualifications. A wide range of sporting and cultural activities. Extra Curricula Programme The College encourages student involvement in a wide range of sporting, outdoor and cultural activities. Individual and team sports include rugby, netball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, hockey, badminton, golf, skiing, athletics, mountain biking, dragon boating, water polo and swimming. Cultural activities include, Drama groups, debating, various music groups and Maori and Pacific Island performance groups. Enrolment Academic Year • The school tuition fee, including ESOL, is $13,000, plus an enrolment fee of $500. • On receipt of the application form and payment of tuition fees, the school will send the necessary documents including ‘Offer of a Place’ for a student visa. Applications should be made to a New Zealand Embassy or High Commission. • • Student Welfare • All NZ examination courses (National Certificate of Educational Achievement Levels 1, 2 and 3 start at the beginning of February). IELTS and TOEFL are available. Term holidays occur in April, July and September. The Right Choice The College’s successful academic record reflects a strong emphasis on study and positive expectations of educational achievement. Staff are hard working, caring and committed to students, providing attractive and stimulating teaching environments. • • • Heretaunga College prides itself on maintaining a close relationship between school and home. Each international student is placed in the care of the Dean of International students and the Homestay Coordinator. Progress of students is closely monitored and official reports are issued in June and November. Accommodation • • Homestay will be arranged by the school which will monitor accommodation arrangements. No ‘flatting’ allowed. Students will be picked up at the airport and taken to their homestay. Costs while in New Zealand • • • • Homestay: NZ$200 per week. Examination fees for standard NCEA external exams: $375 (years 11/12/13). Uniform: NZ$350 (approximately). An amount of $700 to cover incidentals such as stationery, school trips, sports fees, magazine, school ball etc. Insurance The NZ Government now requires every student studying in NZ to have compulsory travel and medical insurance. Heretaunga College can offer a Comprehensive insurance for $440 per year. Wellington Heretaunga College is situated in Upper Hutt, near Wellington. The school is ideally located within an urban environment, in easy distance to a major, attractive city and close to New Zealand’s great outdoors. People love living in Wellington, with its strong emphasis on the arts, its natural beauty, and wide range of activities. There is plenty to do in Wellington which has great shopping centres. There is a modern shopping centre in Lower Hutt, a short distance from Upper Hutt and a new shopping centre in Upper Hutt itself. It is also known for its cafe culture and excellent range of cuisine. Upper Hutt is close to New Zealand’s great outdoors which is world famous for its beauty and for a range of outdoor activities. Within a few minutes from the centre of Upper Hutt are bush walks, river trails and camping spots. And remember, in New Zealand you are never far from a beach and the sea. Trips We organise two trips each year for our international students. The first one is to Rotorua so that students can experience New Zealand’s unique geothermal sites. The second is a 6-day tour of the South Island with its stunning scenery. Full year, full fee-paying students get one free trip. Education Standards: NCEA Literacy 80% (National average 77%) NCEA Numeracy 94% (National average 85%) University Entrance 64% eligible students achieved (National average 50%) The New Zealand education system is one of the highest performing in the world.
